We pay tribute to the late, great Nichelle Nichols as we're joined by Daryl Bar from Sudden Double Deep and Is Paul Dano Ok? to cover one of her few starring movie roles outside of the Star Trek franchise, playing vicious Madam, Dorinda in 1974s Truck Turner. We discuss our own personal histories with Blaxploitation and how Truck Turner, with its Everyman hero played by Isaac Hayes and it's knowing blend of comedy and hard boiled crime action, make it a unique entry in the genre. In this episode, featuring very special guests Daryl and Jeanette from Sudden Double Deep, I wrap up my Marvel Phase 2 coverage with a fantastic episode on Peyton Reed's 'Ant-Man'. And for a film about a tiny guy, we have a huge amount to discuss from the Edgar Wright of it all, Michael Douglas' cancer, de-aging in film, the career of Judy Greer (that ryhmes!), great British chocolate bars, X-Men costumes, clapping for the Avengers and much, much more. Matt Brothers from (Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast and Is Paul Dano Ok?) and Daryl Bär (Sudden Double Deep podcast, Is Paul Dano Ok?) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Matt's choice Stardust. Stardust is a 2007 fantasy action romance directed by Matthew Vaughn and co-written by Vaughn and Jane Goldman, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman. It also boasts an ensemble cast featuring Claire Danes, Charlie Cox, Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais, Jason Flemyng, Rupert Everett, Peter O'Toole, Michelle Pfeiffer, Henry Cavill, Mark Strong and Robert De Niro, with narration by Ian McKellen. A star (Danes) falls from the sky and becomes the quest for Tristan (Cox) to bring back for his beloved Victoria (Miller) so he can marry her and three ancient witches - led by Lamia (Pfeiffer) who need to eat the heart of the star to regain their powers and youth. [supsystic-tables id=236] Stardust scored highly from Matt, Daryl and Kobi for recommendability but less highly from Helen. A lower engagement score from everyone gives Stardust an overall score of 3.58. What do you guys think? Have you seen Stardust? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! Daryl Bär (Sudden Double Deep podcast, Is Paul Dano Ok?) and Matt Brothers from (Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast and also Is Paul Dano Ok?) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Daryl's choice Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the fourth film in the Mission:Impossible film franchise and was released in 2011. directed by Brad (The Incredibles) Bird Ghost Protocol sees Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg reprise their roles as Ethan Hunt and Benji Dunn and introduces Jeremy Renner as William Brandt, with Léa Seydoux and Michael Nyqvist as the villains. Ghost Protocol is notable for its insane Burj Khalifa scene where Ethan has to scale the exterior, an increased role for Pegg as the comedy sidekick for Cruise and no masks. Everyone looks like they're having the most fun in Ghost Protocol - starting a shift in the tone from the previous films to what would become the Christopher McQuarrie M:I films. [supsystic-tables id=219] Ghost Protocol scores very highly across recommendability, repeat viewing and engagement and only let down by small screen and scores a super high 4.53 overall. Daryl Bar, host of Sudden Double Deep and new Podcast, Is Paul Dano Ok? returns to Spocklight to tell us why he, controversially, considers ‘Tomorrow is Yesterday’ to be the finest time travel episode of Star Trek. Daryl tells us how the oddball humour of the episode delights him, Liam questions the quality of replicator grub, Paul points out Kirk’s hypocritical attitude towards Major Christopher’s backward views and Matt notes the similarities with a certain Futurama episode. We also discuss the surprising darkness of the episode, compare it to other time travel based Trek tales and examine how the pre-titles sequence must have wrong footed the contemporary audience. After last week's SIN triple bill we decided to each pick a film to enter the Sudden Double Deep sin bin. First up, Matt picked the godawful Terminator Genisys. Directed by Alan Taylor and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke (no relation), J.K. Simmons, Matt Smith, Lee Byung-hun and Courtney B. Vance. Daryl chose Robert Rodriquez and Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which stars most of the original cast, plus Lady Gaga, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Ava Green and Josh Brolin. Aaaaand finally, Jeanette picked Lars von Trier's POS, Nymphomaniac, and boy did she have a lot to say about it. Please review us over on Apple Podcasts. Got comments or suggestions for new episodes? New York... a city pushed to the edge. People pushed to the limit. And no one's got the guts to stop them… apart from Spocklight at the Movies! This episode, we’re covering ‘Death Wish 3’ (Star Trek connection: Marina Sirtis) with Daryl and Jeanette from smashing film podcast, Sudden Double Deep. Liam decries the gleefully sadistic Death Wish 2, gets nostalgic for the videostore era, wonders how 64-year-old Charles Bronson's punches somehow rivals Superman's and chats up our recent trip to actually SEE Marina Sirtis in the brilliant play, Dark Sublime. Matt is delighted with sightings of a young Alex Winter and a ridiculous plunger wielding punk, can't help but compare the main villain to Gob Bluth and discusses some of the many problematic details surrounding Sirtis' role as 'Maria' And guests Daryl and Jeanette provide their expert knowledge on the history of Canon Films, wince at the iffy white saviour tropes, ill-conceived rape scene and depictions of extreme class warfare... and mostly try to work out where all the money was spent. Join us as we collectively lose our shit and get ever more hysterical at this borderline parody of a movie, complete with cartoonish kills, western-style shootouts, deadly Home Alone traps and the funniest explosion in film history then head straight over to the Sudden Double Deep feed to hear Liam and Matt guesting on their ‘Kingdom of the Spiders’ episode starring William Shatner himself. Daryl and Jeanette from Sudden Double Deep return to Flixwatcher to review Daryl’s choice Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a 2011 version of the classic John le Carre novel directed by Tomas Alfredson, starring the cream of British (albeit male) actors including Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Graham, Toby Jones and John Hurt. In short, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is about finding a mole in M16 during the height of the Cold War in 1973. A lot more happens around that but to try and give a respectable summary wouldn’t do the complex plot justice. Scores [supsystic-tables id=121] Some people might be infuriated by it’s purposeful slow pace but if you stick with it you’ll be richly rewarded. It is worth it just to watch Gary Oldman swimming in Hampstead Heath mens ponds with his prescription glasses on - if that hasn’t sold it then nothing will. It’s Episode 110! Jeanette and Daryl from Sudden Double Deep join us to review the 2017 documentary Faces Places. Faces Places follows director Agnès Varda and photographer and muralist JR as they journey through rural France and form an unlikely friendship. On their journey, they meet ordinary people and take their photos which are then printed larger than life and pasted to buildings and other large scale objects. Faces Places in an hour and a half of celebrating the ordinary and making everyday beautiful. It’s also a wonderful entry-level piece for anyone interested in the work and films of Agnès Varda. Scores [supsystic-tables id=115] Don’t be put off by being subtitled or that it sways in and out of conceptual art, with a run time of an hour and a half you’ll be left smiling and feeling a little bit better about the world after. There was a lot of love for Faces Places from guests and Flixwatcher and it scores 4.14 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Faces Places? What did you think? You may have noticed that no podcast was published last week. Well, consider this week's special Quizcast episode our apology. An episode was recorded, but there was no time to edit it between then and this week's episode - hence why it's just gone 4.09am and here I am trying to publish in time for people's commutes on Tuesday! In our second quizcast of the year, we're rejoined by the FUTstock podcast's (previously FUThead) Matt Aguilera and Matt Lambourne after April's triumph. Making their debuts on the quizcast special are Ben Challoner and Daryl Bar from Sudden Double Deep, the triple bill title podcast. In a strange turn of events, we actually let Paul Field onto an episode that's entirely a quiz, despite his wretched run.... But not to worry, we've made him host so that Owen Hughes and Steve Norman can compete together as a team - we presume Steve was not aware of Owen's dismal losing streak in our previous attempts to win this thing. We'll be back as normal next week. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Welcome to this week's episode of the Failed Critics Podcast where we're once again Steve Norman-less. But don't panic! Tony Black is here to spare you the agony of having to listen to Owen Hughes attempt to host the show. Tony and Owen were also joined by special guests and lovely chaps Daryl Bär and Ben Challoner from the Sudden Double Deep podcast, whose wit, intelligence and fantastic insults make them a more than welcome addition to Failed Critics. Together the team try to come to terms with the news of Gene Wilder's passing breaking just minutes before recording started, as well as perusing the BBC Culture poll of the top 100 films of the 21st century, plus a quick glance at the latest figures around who earns what in Hollywood. The main releases this week include: the latest Jason Statham action vehicle Mechanic: Resurrection; a barrel of laughs and a barrel-sized Jonah Hill in the "based on a true story" black comedy War Dogs; and dystopian thrills and not-much-bloody-spills with The Purge:...
