This week Thanksgiving comes very late or extremely early as we delve into Eli Roth's long overdue Grindhouse inspired Thanksgiving (2023).  We discuss the film at length looking at its roots within grindhouse horror and comparing it with the original trailer from the Grindhouse double bill of Robert Rodriquez's Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. We also look at how it has developed across its long journey to be made and how it leans more into late 90s and early 2000 horrors like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Valentine then it does necessarily 70's/80's grindhouse.   So join us as we arrive late to thanksgiving dinner, the turkeys rotted and well past carving but we're still ready to sit round and say thanks for all the bloody carnage this holiday horror has too offer.  Find us @cmthpodcast on Twitter and Instagram  If you enjoy this episode then please subscribe on your chosen platform and leave us a lovely rating and review to help our podcast grow.

Welcome to your monthly worship service, where each month in this season we will be taking a look at 2 films that influenced one of Tarantino's films. Under the microscope this month is the first collaboration between Tarantino & his best friend Robert Rodriquez, I'm talking about their vampire crime film, From Dusk Till Dawn. The films we will be investigating to see if they simply referenced them in this film or blatantly rip them off are, John Carpenter's "Assault on Precinct 13" (1976) & William Wyler's, "The Desperate Hours" (1955). Sitting down with me this month to assist in my investigation is my Cheeky Basterds Podcast co-host, Mr. Steve Smith. Our Cyborg season continues as we cover ‘Battle Angel Alita', also known by its original Japanese title ‘Gunnm'. This manga would go on to inspire James Cameron to produce a Hollywood adaptation. Skip synopsis @ Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com   066: Battle Angel Alita vol. 1 Chapters 1 to 6, ‘Rusty Angel' and ‘Battle Angel' By Yukito Kishiro Translation by Stephen Paul Lettering by Scott Brown   Dr Ido finds the broken body of a mechanical girl, he revives her, names her Alita and over time acquires new limbs for her, Soon Alita begins to suspect that Ido is killing cyborg women and giving their mechanical parts to Alita, unsettled by this, she sneaks out during the night to find out that Ido is not a killer but in fact a part of a bounty hunter society, one that represents the justice system of their junkyard town. Their paths cross as they run into the vicious mutant, the true culprit of the killings. Alita is able to kill the mutant through her instinctual use of a martial art known as ‘Panzer Kunst' and soon she decides to become a bounty hunter like Ido. Yet unknown to Alita, Ido himself is a vigilante killing for his own satisfaction. Which is the case when he manages to kill a servant of Makaku, a giant cyborg who eats the brains of dogs and humans so to consume the Beta Endorphins within. Luckily one dog, Fang gets to live another day. But some humans, not so much. It's not long until Alita faces a challenge in apprehending the vile Makaku, although Alita is able to cripple Makaku, his head is able to flee from the rest of his body akin to a worm. Due to the battle Ido manages to replace Alita's injured body with a humanoid war machine known as a Berseker. Meanwhile Makaku attacks the gladiator Kinuba, steals his body and claims his powers as his own, especially his retractable grind cutter claws. Alita and Ido go to the Kansas bar to request help from bounty hunters, When Alita calls them out for their cowardice a fight breaks out, with Alita being the victorious one. Soon Makaku shows up looking for Alita and the two continue their fight, Makaku takes a baby and breaks a hole through the floor of the bar, he goads Alita to chase him down into the sewer system. Dr Ido is afraid for Alita and Makaku threatens to cripple and wear Alita as his own personal screaming pendant. Makaku refers to the sewers as his home and shows jealousy towards the baby. But Fang the dog comes to attack Makaku, and whilst disorientated Alita gets Fang to carry the baby and run to safety, then ready for battle, she dips her fingers in tar and makes war paint for her face. Topics: James Cameron's history with the movie rights for Battle Angel Alita. Also, James Cameron Actually Made Alita: Battle Angel Twice (screenrant.com)well. kind of! Comparison to scenes in the movie, starring Rosa Salazar and directed by Robert Rodriquez. Violence in manga, and how violence can be used in creating manga stories. The archetypes of Alita, specifically the Pygmalion myth (Seen in movies such as My Fair Lady) and the David and Goliath inspired fight between Alita and Makaku. The mechanics of Makaku eating brains, possibly inspired by the movie ‘Return of the Living Dead'. The human brain does secrete endorphins however a brain must be alive to do this and since this endorphin is a neuropeptide it binds itself to the central nervous system of the possessor of the brain. In theory the human digestive system can't absorb endorphins through the gut. The gut would just distinguish the brain proteins as simply that, protein, and maybe fatty acids. An exception is that Makaku does not have a human body and his gut maybe able to extract endorphins, this would make sense if you think of Makaku's base body as a killing machine. The implication that he maybe attracted to Alita would also imply that Makaku's brain can secrete its own endorphins, meaning his use for eating brains is simply born out of addiction. A codifier of such a trope may have been zombie movies but it would have been a particular episode of the Simpsons that would have given it popularity, according to this Gizmodo article here. Trivia: The original Japanese title of Battle Angel Alita is Gunnm, pronounced ‘Ganmu', it's a portmanteau of the words “Gun” and “Dream”. Alita's name in the Japanese text is Gally. Makaku's name is derived from the word “Demon”, he spells it using the Kanji. Other references: Hunt for Red October (1990) both the “caterpillar drive” in that movie and the Alita's body use a Magnetohydromic Drive  or an MHD accelerator for short.  This mechanic is a type of conductive liquid or gas that is used as a propellant.   Facebook - facebook.com/weappreciatemanga/ Instagram –  weappreciatemanga.co.uk   Twitter -   @RealJamesFitton Website – Weappreciatemanga.com Email – Weappreciatemanga@gmail.com

Hello, I'm filmmaker Phil Svitek and my upcoming project is Autumn Into Fall (crowdfund link—https://igg.me/at/philsvitekfilm). It's about Neel who's turning 35 and still hasn't found purpose. Even if he did, he doesn't have anyone to share life's beautiful moments with. He hopes that a trip to Bogota provides the spark he needs. Meanwhile, Violet studied abroad there and brought her two best friends to recreate the fun she had in hopes to soften the blow when she gets married and moves away. Their worlds collide when they bump into each other. As they grow closer, it could spell disaster for their lives back home. Now you might be asking yourself why Bogota of all places? Well, I have a friend named Edgar who lives in Bogota and one of the main actresses is Colombian. And it's a place I'm deeply fascinated by given its rich history and culture, far beyond the drugs and violence many of us associate with Colombia. I want to showcase that. In addition to my own research and insights, I'm leaning heavily on those I mentioned to make sure the film is authentic and respectful of their country. As far as inspiration goes, directors like Wong Kar-wai, Greta Gerwig, Richard Linklater, Chloe Zhao and Robert Rodriquez shaped me—mavericks whose style is uniquely their own, yet the stories are universal. And that's my goal as well. Last year I finished my feature directorial debut about people searching for love in downtown LA. For my second film, I want to be even bolder. That's why I wrote a story about Americans in Bogota, Colombia. Here, their worldviews get challenged and it leads to life altering epiphanies, no different than you'd see in movies like Before Sunrise, Happy Together or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. To help the cast, the crew and me pull this off, we're asking for your contribution, however large or small. We're all indie filmmakers at heart and know how to truly stretch a budget. Everyone involved is a friend of mine. They are people who I trust implicitly. But I've chosen them not only for that reason. They are also incredibly talented, and I want you and the world to see their skills on display. With your contribution, it'll make our jobs that much easier. And in return, not only will you bring this project to life, but we've included perks based on the level of your contribution as a reward. Thank you taking the time to consider donating to our project. If you can't make a financial contribution at this time, then please at least share this project with your friends and family across social media.

It's Time For TV TUESDAY   In this episode of Spiraken's Podcast about the latest Television episodes and series, Xan & Gretta make up for missing last week by talking about two episode of the two shows they are watching. So four episodes we review in this episode.  They start this episode by discussing two of the best episode of The Mandalorian to date S2 E5: "Chapter 13: The Jedi" directed by Dave Filoni and then they geek out over the return of A Star Wars Legend in  S2 E6: "Chapter 14: The Tragedy" directed by Robert Rodriquez. After going over the cool sci fi show, they discuss the reveals from two episodes of The Masked Singer S4 E9: " The Group C Finals-The Mask Gives Thanks" and then the semi finals S4 E10: "The Semi Finals- The Super Six" While they discuss the shocking reveal of "Baby Yoda"'s name, they also wonder if Ken will ever get respect in the show and who will ultimately win the day. Welcome to the fifth episode of 'Cinemafia' – the film-review show where one of us lies. This Week: 'Alita: Battle Angel' – a 2019 American cyberpunk action film directed by Robert Rodriquez, based on the original Japanese manga 'Gunnm' by Yukito Kishiro. As always, we recommend you watch the film before listening, as we don't go over the plot in detail and much of our discussion may otherwise be meaningless and frustrating (if it isn't already). The premise: we review a film, but one of the hosts (the Mafia) is covertly distorting their opinion, and it's the job of the other hosts (the Villagers) to deduce who the Mafia is and thus vote for their lynching... while at the same time everyone (hopefully) provides engaging critical analysis. A Phil Svitek Podcast - A Series From Your 360 Creative Coach

Humans have lots of ideas, some good, some bad, but nonetheless we all have lots of them. One of my (Phil Svitek) biggest pet peeves, whether for myself or others, is when those good ideas don't get executed. I'm almost certain you can relate to this feeling in your own life. How many times have you thought of something brilliant but it never got done? You think about it from time to time, say you'll get started but never do. That's the problem with ideas. They're a dime a dozen. It's the execution that matters. And working at the speed of thought, if truly done properly, eradicates the bottlenecks, frustrations, obstacles, and so on of the process in taking an idea from concept to conception. Allow me to illustrate what I mean by working at the speed of thought and how you can apply it to your projects. I'll cite filmmaker Robert Rodriquez among others as part of this lesson. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/suresh In this episode, Suresh discusses: -How he doesn't fit into a particular category except for "creative." -How you question everything when you go through something like a divorce. -How hearing Robert Rodriquez talk about how he doesn't know how to do the things he does but just jumps in and does them anyway really affected him as a creator. -How people want to edit as they go, but how we can learn from children, because they just keep going and figure out the "editing" later. -His advice for people who are afraid of just jumping into some creative pursuit because they think that they will be terrible. -His method of "crowd-sourcing" for things he doesn't know how to do. -What he means when he describes himself as "limitless" in terms of being able to connect with people around the world with a greater knowledge. -Finding "warp pipes" to get ahead, by contacting people who have already been down the path that you intend to go down. -The importance of knowing how and what to Google. -Neuroplasticity and the way your brain changes every time it learns something new. -The power of YouTube when you are trying to learn something. -Advice to not be so rigid, and to keep exploring to find ways to get your creative message out if you happen to not be very good in one particular discipline. -Tips for achieving a flow state (safely) with your art. Suresh's Final Push will inspire you to move someone else with your art. Quotes: "The root skill is being creative." "The only question that people have is, "Who am I?" "You don't have to know anything.  You just be." "People feel that they need to know before they do, and that limits them because they realize how much they don't know." "I'm not limitless, but I know how to connect with all the people on this planet.  And since I know how to do that, there is no limit to me." "The vision is more than myself." "I want you to think as if the entire world was your oyster and everybody on it was on your team.  Now think what you can do with that, because that's the truth." Practical LightingTuesday night's class began with how to set up 3 Point lighting, the classic TV news lighting. 3 point lighting consists of the main light, Key; secondary light, Fill; Backlight or Kicker, which separates the subject from the background and Background light. 3 points of light, 4 lights, an amazing paradox. I describe our efforts setting up the scene. By the way, I mistakenly used the term "baffle" when referring to a fabric grid we use on the Rifa to direct light forward. I don't know what it is called and I couldn't find it on the Lowel site. Thursday night we used the same lighting techniques to recreate a night scene and I include pointers on how to do that.Podcasts for filmmakersFinally, I introduce a new segment, reviewing podcasts that I feel are valuable learning tools for anyone interested in working in the motion graphics field. Tonight I'm profiling the VFX Show. Mentioned briefly is episode 5 where the hosts talk about their favorite DVD extras that include helpful movies on production techniques. Take a look at DVD Breakdown for reviews of DVDs and descriptions of the extras. I also mentioned a book by Robert Rodriquez, the guy who gave us El Mariachi and Spy Kids. It's called Rebel without a Crew.Chapter Titles00:07  This Week00:45  3 Point Lighting01:53  Key02:18  Fill03:29  Backlight04:00  Kicker05:19  Background06:55  Exercise: News Lighting08:54  Night Light12:22  Exercise: Night Lighting14:07  What is Podcasting?18:07  The VFX Show22:49  DVD Extras25:25  Close
