fWotD Episode 2855: John Wick (film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 27 February 2025 is John Wick (film).John Wick is a 2014 American action thriller film directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad. Keanu Reeves stars as John Wick, a legendary hitman who comes out of retirement to seek revenge against the men who killed his dog, a final gift from his recently deceased wife. The film also stars Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, and Willem Dafoe.Kolstad's script drew on his interest in action, revenge, and neo noir films. The producer Basil Iwanyk purchased the rights as his first independent film production. Reeves, whose career was declining, liked the script and recommended that the experienced stunt choreographers Stahelski and David Leitch direct the action scenes; Stahelski and Leitch successfully lobbied to co-direct the project. Principal photography began in October 2013, on a $20–$30 million budget, and concluded that December. Stahelski and Leitch focused on long, highly choreographed single takes to convey action, eschewing the rapid cuts and closeup shots of contemporary action films.Iwanyk struggled to secure theatrical distributors because industry executives were dismissive of an action film by first-time directors, and Reeves's recent films had financially underperformed. Lionsgate Films purchased the distribution rights to the film two months before its release date on October 24, 2014. Following a successful marketing campaign that changed its perception from disposable entertainment to a prestige event helmed by an affable leading actor, John Wick exceeded box-office projections and became a modest success, grossing $86 million worldwide. It received generally positive reviews for its style and its action sequences. Critics hailed John Wick as a comeback for Reeves, in a role that played to his acting strengths. The film's mythology of a criminal underworld with rituals and rules was praised as its most distinctive and interesting feature.John Wick began a successful franchise which includes three sequels (John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)), the prequel television series The Continental (2023), and the spin-off film Ballerina (2025), as well as video games and comic books. It is seen as having revitalized the action genre and popularized long single takes with choreographed, detailed action. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:56 UTC on Thursday, 27 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see John Wick (film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Stephen.

All three films were considered critical and commercial successes, with a collective gross of more than $587 million worldwide. A fourth installment, John Wick: Chapter 4, is in post-production and has a release date of March 24, 2023. A fifth installment is also in development, and was originally intended to be shot back-to-back with the fourth film.  Nominated for 10 awards and won 5. First time you saw the movie? Plot:-That is an old ass iphone.-Interesting way to start a movie, with the main character seemingly dying.-Really going for the emotional gut punch right off the bat, huh?-The fucking beagle... Sweet letter. Emotional gut punch, binding you to the character.-obviously John Wick has never had a puppy... Don't just leave it on the ground, not in a kennel.-Fitting the guys in the bmw are russian-So he goes to air field just to power slide? we obviously know nothing about him, yet. So what does he do? What happened to the dog during the power sliding?-The russian assholes are back; all for the car? Because they felt disrespected? Fuck those guys for killing the dog.-So John knows exactly where to go to find his car? Who's Vigo? The Carpathian? He did conquer the country of Moldavia.-Hey, look, it's the mayham guy... Guess that's apt for this movie.-Finally getting some back story on John... So he was an assassin. -So they're going to try and kill him before he can come for them... Obviously he's waiting on them.-It's increadable these guys only come for him one at a time... The knife fight was anxiety inducing.-Chat with the sheriff was funny.-What's with the gold coins?-Getting Wicks old friend to try and kill him is low-The pacing of the movie is bumpy. The fighting is fun, but all the other stuff is laboring.-So some werid hotel that everyone knows John and now a Matrix-esque club/bar thing?-How long does it take to drown someone? Always seems too fast in movies.-Interesting music choice in the club fight scene-Being thrown off the balcony, that wouldn've broken something... back, elbow, leg.-Nice phone call to the kid... Everything has a price. -Bourbon John drinks is blantons single barrel malt whisky-Willem Dafoes character is a shitty shot if he misses while John is sleeping. Interesting fight...-Didn't kill the girl assassin; guess there is some honor among assassins. -So he burns all the money... I would've taken a stack or two... Even though it seems he doesn't need it. -The car park gun fight... When he's hit by the car... Again, should've broken something. Concussion at least.-Cool they get to meet face to face, and John explains his anger... Don't really see that happening in most action moivies. Very emotionally driven.-That is ssecond shot willem dafoes character missed on an easy shot... is he trying ot subtly help Wick?-Can't imagine giving up your kid to be killed. ugh... almost feel bad for the guy.-I cant wait to watch this shitty kid get killed for being such an asshole.-Management gave him a dodge challenger/charger? I'd rather have the old camero or mustang.-So Dafoe was really... Da-ally... -Girl assassin still after him, even though the contract was pulled?-Uh-oh, they killed Willem Dafoe.-The girl assassin got hers... But killing her in the crossfire like that... Not too smart. What if one misses.-Its crazy, right when he jumps off the car, is when it starts raining.-Big fight wasn't that big... Few punches and a stab.-Back to the begninning, and he's alive.-So he steals someone elses dog? The end Top Five Trivia of the movie: Marcus Facts about John wick 1 When Kolstad was writing John Wick, he orginally titled the film Scorn then he decided to name his protagonist after his grandfather, John Wick, a businessman who owned Wick Building Systems in Madison, Wisconsin. 2 The Action scenes had to be muted. On location in New York City, Stahelski and Leitch had to exercise caution when it came to staging shootouts and car chases, and not just for safety. Their filming permit didn't allow for blank ammunition, so computer-generated muzzle flashes were often used. 3 Based on how many dynamic action scenes the John Wick movies include, it is pretty obvious that filming them must be somewhat arduous for series star Keanu Reeves. As it turns out, that was especially true for the actor when they filmed the nightclub scene he had the flu at the time and was running a 104° fever. 4 Michael Nyqvist, who played Viggo Tarasov, had to have 80 stitches put in his head after a stunt went wrong while filming. 5: Director Chad Stahelski was Keanu Reeves' stunt double in The Matrix movies The story is loosely inspired by an incident in Texas involving former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, who wrote Lone Survivor, about his fireteam's ordeal during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan in 2005. Luttrell was given a yellow labrador puppy, whom he named DASY, after the members of his fireteam. On April 1, 2009, at about 1:00 a.m., Luttrell was awakened by a gunshot, and saw four men drive away. DASY was dead in his yard from a gunshot wound. He armed himself with two 9mm Beretta pistols and chased the men through four counties in his truck until police apprehended them. They taunted Luttrell, threatened to kill him, and indicated no remorse for their actions. They were later sentenced for animal cruelty. Luttrell stated later, "I spared them, because I've killed enough people already."    TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. Director Chad Stahelski worked with Keanu Reeves on the MATRIX (1999) as a stunt coordinator for that film.  When screenwriter Derek Kolstad wrote the screenplay for a film about a bounty hunter that included crazy action set pieces, Stahelski thought of Reeves to play the lead role.  That film became JOHN WICK (2014) and the beginning of an iconic character and franchise. John Wick, who's wife died from illness, retires from bounty hunting to try to deal with his loss.  When a beagle puppy arrives as a gift from his late wife, he begins to find peace in his life.  However, when robbers break in and take everything that's left in his world, he returns to his prior life, searching for revenge and vengeance and once more find peace in this crazy world. Keanu Reeves returned to superstardom after being cast in the film.  The movie also stars Willem Dafoe, John Leuizamo, Ian McShane, Alfie Allen, and Michael Nyqvist.  JOHN WICK reviewed fantastic reviews and became a surprising money maker leading to the movie becoming a franchise.  A Patreon movie pick, Dark Discussions takes a look at the film that started it all and gives their thoughts.

**CONTENT WARNING: In order to discuss the events of both films, we discuss scenes of sexual violence** Back for a bonus episode, due to popular demand we've done what none of you should probably attempt and that is watching both adaptations of Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - back-to-back. The 2009 film from Niels Arden Oplev marked the arrival of Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist, both of whom would go on to fairly successful Hollywood careers. Its a relatively faithful adaptation of the novel, albeit on a budget that only just elevates it above its TV movie roots. Just a couple of years later, the same story got the Hollywood treatment under the stewardship of David Fincher. With a budget close to $100m and James Bond in the lead, surely this had to smooth off some of the book's rough edges in order to see a wide release, right? Catherine's read the books, Neal and Ben haven't. So how will that affect their opinions of these two films, which share so much in terms of narrative, but are wildly different in style and approach? Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the fourth film in the Mission:Impossible film franchise and was released in 2011. directed by Brad (The Incredibles) Bird Ghost Protocol sees Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg reprise their roles as Ethan Hunt and Benji Dunn and introduces Jeremy Renner as William Brandt, with Léa Seydoux and Michael Nyqvist as the villains. Ghost Protocol is notable for its insane Burj Khalifa scene where Ethan has to scale the exterior, an increased role for Pegg as the comedy sidekick for Cruise and no masks. Everyone looks like they're having the most fun in Ghost Protocol - starting a shift in the tone from the previous films to what would become the Christopher McQuarrie M:I films.   [supsystic-tables id=219] Ghost Protocol scores very highly across recommendability, repeat viewing and engagement and only let down by small screen and scores a super high 4.53 overall. The first chapter of a successful film franchise, "John Wick" stars Keanu Reeves as a retired professional hitman, who is grieving the loss of his wife who has recently died of a terminal illness, who is drawn out of retirement when his house is broken into, his car is stolen, and his puppy (a gift of his deceased wife) is killed, and as a consequence John Wick (aka. "The Boogeyman") starts upon a road of revenge against those responsible. The film also stars Michael Nyqvist as Viggo Tarasov, Alfie Allen as Iosef Tarasov (Viggo's son), Adrianne Palicki as Ms. Perkins, Bridget Monynahan as Helen Wick (John's deceased wife), Ian McShane as the mysterious and enigmatic Winston (the owner of The Continental Hotel), Willem Dafoe as Marcus (an experienced assassin and former mentor of John Wick), as well as many other noteworthy actors who give great performances as memorable characters. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

It's the start of the Benjamin Button-style Fincher-Fest, movie lovers! And what better way to kick it off than to take a look at David Fincher's current film, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," based on Stieg Larsson's first book in his internationally best-selling "Millenium" trilogy. It's already racking up end-of-the-year accolades and incredible buzz about Rooney Mara's knock-your-socks-off performance of Lisbeth Salander (all well-earned), even though some contingents of fans of the original Swedish films (great films in their own right that only came out last year) question why Hollywood felt it so necessary to adapt the books again so quickly after the others were made. The Swedish films certainly put Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist -- who play Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, respectively -- on the map in international casting circles (Rapace has since appeared in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and just wrapped in Ridley Scott's Prometheus while Nyqvist appeared in John Singleton's Abduction earlier this year and currently can be seen in Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol.) In this episode, we talk about the various iterations of this first of Larsson's stories -- did the Americans need to make their own version, what works in each version and what doesn't, what did Fincher and his team bring to the table, etc. We work to put in context what the Swedish film is to Swedish audiences by comparing similar statistics with American films. We discuss the performances -- Rooney Mara's brilliant work as well as the amazing Daniel Craig who we both feel isn't just playing James Bond in Sweden. We discuss the change in the end of the story and how we feel about it as well as all of the sequences that come after the climax. We chat about the team behind this -- Steven Zaillian who is having a great year with this and Moneyball, Jeff Cronenweth, Ren Klyce, Kirk Baxter, Angus Wall, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross -- and that's just some of the crew! Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, Julian Sands and the always amazing Christopher Plummer all give brilliant performances. One actor we don't mention in this episode but who is worth mentioning here is Yorick van Wageningen, the poor actor stuck with playing the brutal role of Nils Bjurman. He was so traumatized after filming his pivotal rape scene with Mara that he locked himself in his hotel room for a day and cried. Obviously his choice to take the role, but it's always good to be reminded that an actor is not the character they portray. So if you haven't had a chance to read the book or watch either film version, go do so before listening in because we have some spoilers, then tune in and join us as we take on this fascinating murder mystery with one of film's most intriguing characters in years.
