A landscaper, a caretaker, and a special agent. In August of 2000 41-year-old Susan Carter was in the midst of a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband. The pair were ordered to attend mediation regarding custody of their 10-year-old daughter, Natasha Alexander “Alex” Carter. After a heated exchange at one of the meetings, Alex and Susan vanished. A missing person's report was filed for 10-year-old Alex and a felony warrant for her mother, Susan. Decades after the two vanished investigators discovered that things aren't always as they seem. After nearly a quarter century - the missing persons case of Alex Carter has finally come to a close. Listen as Julia and Harper delve into the efforts that went into closing this cold case in 2024. Although it ends with a terrible truth - that Alex Carter and her mother, Susan Carter, were in fact murdered by a trusted individual over money troubles - her case now at least becomes a shining example of how hope is always important to keep, for both the law enforcement agencies that fight to close cold cases, and for the families of victims searching for answers.

The residents of Ambridge take us on a journey back in time, acting as our guides in this sparkling new adaptation of Flora Thompson's classic tales of rural life in the late nineteenth century. Young Laura's horizons are widened significantly as she settles into her new life, working in the post office close to the bustling market town of Candleford, and unwittingly becoming the protegee of the formidable local postmistress, Dorcas Lane. Miss Lane presides over the Candleford Green post office as an 1890s Susan Carter, keeping an eye on all the goings-on on the village green and (unlike Susan in Ambridge) guarding her customers' intimate secrets. As in Ambridge, (only some 30 miles away), the Candleford Green post office is the hub of the community, used by everyone from jovial local squire, Sir Timothy, to the Irish labourers who charm the post mistress into opening late on a Saturday so that they can send their wages back home on pay day. As Laura gradually learns the ropes in her new job, her eyes are opened to a wealth of new attitudes and experiences - and romance appears on the horizon. Steeped in a world where small things matter, the cast of The Archers tells the story of Laura's journey from Lark Rise to Candleford, and beyond. Written by Flora Thompson Adapted by Katie Hims Producer & Director: Kim Greengrass Executive Editor: Jeremy Howe Technical Producers: Andy Partington & Vanessa Nuttall Musical Director: Rosemary Watts Production Coordinators: Sally Lloyd & Julie Sadler Ambridge narrators: Jim Lloyd … John Rowe Susan Carter … Charlotte Martin Tracy Horrobin … Susie Riddell Jazzer McCreary … Ryan Kelly Candleford residents: Laura … Molly Pipe Dorcas Lane … Louiza Patikas Mrs Macey … Emerald O'Hanrahan Tommy Macey … Blayke Darby Godfrey … Taylor Uttley Philip … Angus Stobie Sir Timothy and Ben … Timothy Bentinck. Woman's Hour celebrates the 70th anniversary of The Archers, looking at the female characters and storylines that have shaped the programme, presented by Felicity Finch (Ruth Archer). How have the roles of women in farming changed over the last 70 years in the real world and in The Archers? From Jill Archer who is often portrayed more as a traditional farmer's wife to Ruth who is very much in partnership with David to Pip who is a thoroughly modern farmer and appears to be in pole position to inherit the farm. Helen Archer has also made a foray into cheese-making. Felicity hears from Mary Quicke of Quicke’s cheeses, who is cited by Agricultural editor of The Archers as an inspiration for Helen’s storyline. Female scriptwriters only began on The Archers in 1975. They brought a new perspective to the programme, revitalising its profile and cementing its place in the British psyche. One of the first women to write for the show was Mary Cutler. She joins Felicity to talk about what it was like during those early years and her most memorable stories for female characters during her 40 years writing for the show. Felicity also talks to Naylah Ahmed, who has been writing for the show for 5 years. Susan Carter is often at the heart of what is going on in the village of Ambridge and is known as the village gossip. According to a recent study, men and women gossip on average for 52 minutes every day. But Susan’s gossip is often perceived as malicious and small-minded. Charlotte Martin who plays Susan actually works as a psychologist when she’s not on the programme. She joins Felicity, Dr Cara Courage and comedian Angela Barnes to discuss the role of gossip on the show. One of the unique and strange things about playing a character in Ambridge – is that the storylines unfold over years, so you grow old with the programme. Younger characters, as they age, inherit the standing of more established characters, and none of them know where they might end up. So we asked the actor Katie Redford – who plays Lily and Emerald O’Hanrahan who plays Emma to talk about their hopes for their characters in the future. Our guests also muse on the characters who might be missing that they hope might turn up in Ambridge one day. Presenter: Felicity Finch Producer: Clare Walker
