2022.12.25 – 0724 – Reading Cast Lists This is the part of the cast list for an episode of the world's longest-running continuing drama, BBC Radio 4's “The Archers”:Pat Archer ….. Patricia Gallimore Susan Carter ….. Charlotte Martin Justin Elliott ….. Simon Williams Toby Fairbrother ….. Rhys Bevan Brad Horrobin ….. Taylor Uttley Stella Pryor ….. Lucy Speed Writer, Nick Warburton Director, Julie Beckett Editor, Jeremy Howe In this situation, with agreement from a studio director, you may be able to adlib slightly with the list to make it an easier and more understandable listen:Pat Archer was played by Patricia Gallimore Susan Carter, Charlotte Martin and Justin Elliott by Simon Williams.Rhys Bevan played Toby FairbrotherTaylor Uttley was Brad Horrobin and the part of Stella Pryor was Lucy Speed The writer was Nick Warburton, it was directed by Julie Beckett and the editor was Jeremy Howe. That, of course, also with the change in tone for each character and actor name, and with a final downward inflection at the end of the list to show completeness. Hosted on Acast. Woman's Hour celebrates the 70th anniversary of The Archers, looking at the female characters and storylines that have shaped the programme, presented by Felicity Finch (Ruth Archer). How have the roles of women in farming changed over the last 70 years in the real world and in The Archers? From Jill Archer who is often portrayed more as a traditional farmer's wife to Ruth who is very much in partnership with David to Pip who is a thoroughly modern farmer and appears to be in pole position to inherit the farm. Helen Archer has also made a foray into cheese-making. Felicity hears from Mary Quicke of Quicke’s cheeses, who is cited by Agricultural editor of The Archers as an inspiration for Helen’s storyline. Female scriptwriters only began on The Archers in 1975. They brought a new perspective to the programme, revitalising its profile and cementing its place in the British psyche. One of the first women to write for the show was Mary Cutler. She joins Felicity to talk about what it was like during those early years and her most memorable stories for female characters during her 40 years writing for the show. Felicity also talks to Naylah Ahmed, who has been writing for the show for 5 years. Susan Carter is often at the heart of what is going on in the village of Ambridge and is known as the village gossip. According to a recent study, men and women gossip on average for 52 minutes every day. But Susan’s gossip is often perceived as malicious and small-minded. Charlotte Martin who plays Susan actually works as a psychologist when she’s not on the programme. She joins Felicity, Dr Cara Courage and comedian Angela Barnes to discuss the role of gossip on the show. One of the unique and strange things about playing a character in Ambridge – is that the storylines unfold over years, so you grow old with the programme. Younger characters, as they age, inherit the standing of more established characters, and none of them know where they might end up. So we asked the actor Katie Redford – who plays Lily and Emerald O’Hanrahan who plays Emma to talk about their hopes for their characters in the future. Our guests also muse on the characters who might be missing that they hope might turn up in Ambridge one day. Presenter: Felicity Finch Producer: Clare Walker

For Breast Cancer Awareness month, this week we sit down with Charlotte Martin, breast cancer survivor and advocate. In October 2018, Charlotte was diagnosed with Stage 1 HER2 Breast Cancer at the age of 31. An extremely rare form of breast cancer, with a 1 in 10,000 chance of contraction at such a young age. Charlotte was able to detect it at an early stage, because she performed regular self breast exams. In the years leading up to her own diagnosis, her doctors had all declined to do mammogram checks, because she was quote “too young” and “healthy,” even though her own mother had suffered from Breast Cancer. What followed after her diagnosis was chemotherapy, IVF treatments, a double mastectomy -- and the large price tag and emotional toil that came with it all.We are so grateful to Charlotte for sharing her own experience and fighting for women to have early checks, being your own health advocate, and honor breast cancer awareness month. This week I'm chatting with Charlotte Martin. Charlotte is celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the release of her record Stromata. Over the course of her career, Charlotte Martin has recorded both major label and independent releases, performed sold-out shows to audiences around the world and shared stages with the likes of Liz Phair, Pete Yorn, Damien Rice, Jason Mraz, and many others. Her music has been licensed for a plethora of television shows, including “So You Think You Can Dance,” which regularly features her song “The Dance” during the show's open. Details magazine called her “a seductive performer” and “a skilled lyricist who writes with surgical precision” and Performing Songwriter praised Martin as “a born storyteller and affecting vocalist.” In addition to taking a deep dive into discussing some of the tracks on the record, this conversation is full of lessons and insight about navigating a career in music business. Contrary to popular belief, it's not all rainbows and unicorns after you sign a record deal. Links charlottemartinmusic.com Brassy Broadcast interview with Lisa Lombardo
