A Remedy for Despair here II We chat with Ben Kunkler, who as part of Melbourne University NTEU Causals Network was part of the campaign which clawed back $45 million of stolen wages from the University and set the agenda for the entire higher education sectors push to decasualizes the workforce. Their campaign has been immortalised through the Commons Library's launch of the Organising! A Remedy for Despair case study and the We are The University oral history. These two resources document how casual workers at Australia's richest university launched a series of campaigns in 2019 and 2020 which culminated in the back payment of a staggering $45 million in stolen wages. Along the way they recruited hundreds of new members, built a network of delegates, and steadily forced management to concede to a range of demands. Both the oral history and the summarised case study provide insights and lessons for those challenging exploitation and building union power in their own workplaces.

Filmmaker, Ling Ang, has been documenting her dreams through written records across the span of three years. Combining journals with her photographs from the conscious world, she brings to life these personal subconscious narratives. Familiar landmarks turn into the locations of a sci-fi fantasy. Recurring themes revolving around her childhood, relationships, hedonism and the afterlife. A visual artist with over ten years of experience across a diverse array of international productions. The work is rooted in a documentary language, exploring contemporary issues with a strong narrative format. Ling has kept a written archive of lucid dreaming over the last few years, which has manifested into large scale, experimental installations from Melbourne to London. If you were asked to describe a philanthropist, what would you say? You'd probably say an older person, either retired or at the top of their field, with — most importantly — millions or billions of dollars to spare. But young Australians such as Melbourne's Ling Ang are challenging this stereotype. At 31 years old, the artist and documentary filmmaker has made significant donations to a number of Melbourne-based organisations and campaigns. She recently donated $80,000 to the Melbourne International Film Festival to help it embrace "extended reality" technology, and also contributed $500,000 to the restoration of the Capitol Theatre on Swanston St in 2018.She also funds a scholarship for her alma mater RMIT University.Emerging technologies are now being used to develop content for further cinematic projects and installations using her skills in filmmaking, photography and a push into Extended Reality (XR) by manipulating 3D scans and virtual environments.   Deborah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/what.ive.learnt/Mind, Film and Publishing: https://www.mindfilmandpublishing.com/Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/what-ive-learnt/id153556330Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3TQjCspxcrSi4yw2YugxBkBuzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1365850

Mara is nearing the end of her first year as ACF president with national body's 52nd annual general meeting planned for the night of Friday,November 23 at the Melbourne Town Hall in Swanston St. The foundation wants next year's Federal election to be a "climate election" and intends to initiate one million conversations about the climate before Australians go to the polls.Mara's infectious enthusiasm for conservation is intoxicating and she is hoping that others, whether members of the ACF or not, will join her and so leave our politicians no option but to act positively, and enthusiastically, to stop those dynamics that are worsening the Earth's climate and so putting all aspects of conservation at risk.
