Welcome back to Truth, Lies and Work, the award-winning psychology podcast from the HubSpot Podcast Network, hosted by Chartered Occupational Psychologist Leanne Elliott and business owner Al Elliott.
There are so many things required from us as women in this modern life, that it's possible you need a reminder: the whole point of scalable freedom in your business means that you get to create something incredible in your business alongside having an incredible life. And that means we need to constantly check in and reimagine what it looks like to show up in our business – without tapping into old industrial revolution stories about how we need to work. Today, I'm sharing my insights on how I've successfully integrated a 4 day work week model into my own business through a mastermind framework. Strategies for a Successful Four-Day Work WeekLet's talk strategy. Moving to a 4 day work week wasn't about doing less; it was about doing things more efficiently. I've adopted several strategies that keep me laser-focused and ensure that my productivity remains high:1. Prioritising What Matters: My time has become incredibly precious, especially with my daughter involved. I'm extremely discerning about how I spend each moment. If something doesn't feel worth missing time with Sunny, it doesn't make the cut.2. Embracing Deep Work: Tools like the Opal app have been game-changers. By blocking social media during evenings and mornings, I've carved out space for deep, uninterrupted work. This focus not only improves productivity but also the quality of work I produce.3. Communication and Boundaries: Clear communication with my team is vital. Everyone knows I don't work Fridays, so tasks need to be completed by Thursday afternoon. This clarity ensures that my workweek flows smoothly and that my team can function effectively without my constant availability.Balancing Work and Personal LifeThe beauty of running a mastermind model is its flexibility. Even within my structured workdays, I still find time to show up for my clients, attend to essential tasks and focus on my family. Life calls for us to wear many hats, whether it's being a parent, a business owner, or a friend. This model allows me to honour each of those roles without spreading myself too thin.Reimagining What Success Looks Like for YouAs we move through Q2, I want to encourage you to reflect on what success looks like for your business. Could a 4 day work week enhance your life too? Remember, life and business shouldn't be a relentless hustle. It's about finding that sweet spot where you have the freedom to enjoy your life and the satisfaction of running a flourishing business.I'm excited about the growth this approach can create, should you choose it—not only in your productivity, but in the time and quality you give to your life and loved ones. The introduction of a 4-day workweek in Iceland in 2019 has proven to be successful nearly six years later. Productivity has remained stable, even increasing in some industries and almost all workers have reported better mental health and less stress. The four-day work week has gained momentum in recent years, but has not yet entered the mainstream. Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, Global Programs Director at 4 Day Week Global, joins the Talent Angle to explain why organizations should consider experimenting with new ways of working. He highlights the importance of rest for human creativity and problem solving, and outlines how a shortened work week can unlock human potential to benefit both employers and employees. He is the author of three books exploring how companies and individuals can better integrate rest, creativity, and focus into digital-age lives and work. Before joining 4 Day Week Global, Alex was a research director at the Institute for the Future and senior consultant at Strategic Business Insights, and lectured at Oxford University, Stanford University, and UC Berkeley. Alex received a Ph.D. in history and sociology of science from the University of Pennsylvania. Brent Cassell is a VP Advisory at Gartner, where he has worked for the past 18 years in both the HR and CIO Research Groups. Currently, his research focuses on the future of work and total rewards. In 2022, Brent won Gartner's award for Outstanding Thought Leadership for his work on redesigning work for the hybrid world. He is also the contributing editor of HR Leaders Monthly and the co-host of the Talent Angle podcast.

Imagine if 4-day work weeks didn't only occur when a holiday weekend rolls around. Beyond more free time, do shorter work weeks also create financial gain? Today's case study explores that question with Erin Diehl, founder of B2B professional development company, Improve It and best-selling author of “I see You! A Leader's Guide to Energize Your Team Through Radical Empathy.” After a life altering concussion last year, Erin knew she needed to prioritize her physical and mental health, which prompted her to research the logistics of working only 4 days per week. In October 2023, her company piloted this new structure for all internal staff for 90 days, creating benchmarks to help them determine if this trial had been a success. Now nearly a year later, they're still going strong with 4 day work weeks and have hit their end of quarter revenue goals for three straight quarters, seeing as large as a 77% growth in a single quarter. Here's the process Erin and her team used to successfully implement this. On the face of it the 4-day working week sounds like a good thing, but the devil is in the detail. Recently in the UK the government has indicated they may strengthen workers' rights to request this – however, it's the right to request 40 hours compressed into 4 10 hour days, rather than 5 8-hour days. Although it might sound attractive at first, I'm not sure this is sustainable in the longer term, particularly for those who have family. If you include travel time, it could be that you end up being away from home from 7am – 7pm. Which would leave you Friday to recover and could ultimately lead to burnout. A better option could be the 100/80/100 4-day working week: 100% of pay, 80% of time, 100% of productivity. Initially pioneered by NZ firm Perpetual Guardian and taken up by hundreds of organisations around the world – although interestingly very few in NZ. It's based on the idea that during a typical 5-day week there are only limited periods when we are productive – some estimate that it's only about 30% of time. So, if we support people to be more focused and productive at work, we reward them with having to work less than they currently do. Global results are quite staggering: - 25% increase in revenue - 32% reduction in staff turnover - 66% reduction in burnout - 94% of organisations wanted to continue It doesn't involve everyone simply working 4 8-hour days – some people might work 5 days but shorter hours, some 3 days but longer hours. Every year the “deal” is put to workers – if we can keep productivity at 100%, we will pay you for 40 hours but you only have to work 32. If productivity drops, we go back to the 40-hour week. Great idea as it puts the solutions back into the hands of the staff who work in their own interests rather than having management dictate. What can people do if they're interested? - Don't buy into the idea that “it won't work for us” —everyone says that— if your business needs to provide services 5 (or more) days per week then hand this problem over to the staff to figure out. - Be prepared to do quite a bit of work beforehand e.g., how do you define productivity in your business, are you tracking people's rates of burnout or wellbeing and if not, how will you do this? - Likely to need some training too e.g., how to effectively run a meeting so that people's time isn't wasted. Hi everyone, Carl Gould here with your #70secondCEO. Just a little over a one-minute investment every day for a lifetime of results. I would say it's all of the above just because of the sheer volume, but where most people are landing is with the hybrid work environment. Three days in the office, two to three days in the office, and two days outside the office. The other thing we're seeing is companies going to four-day work weeks, four 10-hour days as opposed to five eight-hour days. That way you have a long weekend every weekend. And so Mondays and Fridays, generally speaking, whichever model you choose, Mondays and Fridays are becoming the flex day. And most of the in-office collaboration, team meetings, those are happening Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and people are allowed to work remotely Monday and FridaySo that's what we're seeing mostly. And I think the hybrid model is a good compromise. It allows you a lot of flexibility, still keep your side hustle, and you have to live reasonably close to where you work. Like and follow this podcast so you can learn more. My name is Carl Gould, and this has been your #70secondCEO.

If the thought of a 4 day work week has crossed your mind, my guess is that you've gone back and forth thinking about it. Implementing a four-day workweek takes thought and consideration – so in today's episode of the Small But Mighty Agency Podcast – I bring along a few friends who have implemented four-day work weeks. You'll get four different perspectives and four unique insights on this week's episode. This summer, we're doing something different on the podcast by bringing you a few a-sync episodes. A-sync episodes are not live interviews with our guests.Instead, I posed the same question to four people: Q: What insight or challenge have you encountered with a 4-day work week, and how do you address it in practice? Then, I asked each guest to record a clip under three minutes long and share their unique perspective. My goal for these a-sync episodes is to help you get “to-the-point answers.” Tune in as we get to the point of the 4-day work week.
