"It's the little things that get you caught" and its The Little Things that have us talking in this weeks episode. This time around we review the HBO Max movie The Little Things, that sparked some internet controversy based off mixed reviews and multiple theories that has been thrown out into the universe that surrounds this murder mystery crime thriller starring Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto
This week on On Story we'll hear from veteran screenwriters John Lee Hancock, Brian Helgeland and Robin Swicord on the process of creating compelling characters. And later, award-winning writer and director Brenda Chapman discusses how female perspective, a love of art, and an understanding of flawed characters influenced her writing in the animated classics The Lion King, The Prince of Egypt, and Brave. Characters are the emotional anchor for all great stories. No matter how intricate the plot, well-developed characters are crucial ingredients for engaging an audience and encouraging them to invest in a story's journey. I spoke with a group of veteran screenwriters about their process of crafting compelling characters at the Austin Film Festival. John Lee Hancock is a director, writer and producer most known for his work on The Blind Side, A Perfect World and his latest film The Little Things. Brian Helgeland is a screenwriter, producer and director. His writing credits include L.A. Confidential, Man on Fire, and A Knight's Tale. Robin Swicord is the writer of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Memoirs of a Geisha and Little Women. The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia
Sometimes a movie hits streaming at exactly the right time, and Outside the Wire hit Netflix exactly when Greg needed some mindless action... BUT Rob may have had other ideas. If you like 90's style crime noir, The Little Things might scratch that itch, but it also had some flaws that couldn't be overlooked. Finally, we check out a big payoff episode for Wandavision, episode 4, which brought Jimmy back to the show and explained a lot of the wackiness. The Give Me Five Podcast is on Patreon. It's a Denzel Washington double-feature this week, as John Wayne, Petey, and Stew revisit "Training Day" before checking out Denzel's newest feature, "The Little Things." Plus, adventures in AMC stock trading.
The story of a seasoned, yet disgraced veteran detective who teams up with a hot-shot fast-tracking young detective to hunt down a serial killer is the backdrop for this dark, complex story about the demons and insecurities that we carry around as well as a chance for redemption. The Little Things is a neo-noir psychological crime thriller film written and directed by John Lee Hancock, and produced by Hancock and Mark Johnson. Taking place in the 1990s, the film focuses on clashes between a Kern County deputy and a Los Angeles detective that occur during the investigation of a serial killer. The film stars Best Actor Oscar winners Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto in the lead roles, with Natalie Morales, Terry Kinney, Chris Bauer, Joris Jarsky, Isabel Arraiza, and Michael Hyatt in supporting roles.
This week's episode is a little different for us. We've just lost a very dear family member to us and wanted to put out something raw and in real time what we are processing and grieving. The old saying "You don't know what you've got until it's gone" is very true and we hope to bring more awareness to cherishing all the moments you have with the ones you love because you never know when it may be the last. For now, we have to keep living our lives and look forward to the day we will meet our beautiful Haus again.
