A film that was immensely successful upon its theatrical release but has lowered in estimation over the years. We're talking about John Lee Hancock's true story sports biopic about football player Michael Oher, "The Blind Side," starring Sandra Bullock, Quinton Aaron, Tim McGraw, Jae Head, Lily Collins, and Kathy Bates. The movie was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning Best Actress for its star Sandra Bullock, but should it have taken the perspective of Leigh Anne Tuohy and her family instead of Oher?

Mackie portrays Dewayne Johnson, a school groundskeeper claiming Monsanto's herbicide, Roundup, caused his cancer. Dern plays Monsanto's chief toxicologist. The film addresses the contentious debate over glyphosate, following a landmark 2018 case where Monsanto was found liable for Johnson's cancer, marking a significant victory for consumer safety.

"The Blind Side" is a 2009 film directed by John Lee Hancock, based on the true story of Michael Oher, an impoverished African-American teenager who finds support and guidance from a wealthy white family, the Tuohys. They help him overcome his challenging background and develop his football talents, leading him to a successful career in the NFL. The movie explores themes of race, family, and determination while showcasing the transformative power of compassion and opportunity.Well we were all blind sided when Michael Oher, the main character the movie was loosely based on filed a $15 million dollar lawsuit against the Tuohy's. Oher's claim Tuohy family never officially adopted him and instead tricked him into signing paperwork that locked him into a conservatorship, which gave them legal authority to make business decisions in his name. I have an epic conversation in store for you all today. Our guest is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, filmmaker, John Lee Hancock. While working as a lawyer by day back in 1986, John moonlighted as a screenwriter, writing script after script. His spec script A Perfect World caught the eye of Steven Spielberg and eventually was directed by Clint Eastwood. After that success, he went on to direct the crowd-pleasing The Rookie.A true story about a coach who discovers that it's never too late for dreams to come true. Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid) never made it out of the minor leagues before a shoulder injury ended his pitching career twelve years ago. Now a married-with-children high-school chemistry teacher and baseball coach in Texas, Jim's team makes a deal with him: if they win the district championship, Jim will try out with a major-league organization. After the box-office success of The Rookie, John tackled the epic story of The Alamo.A semi-historical account of the standoff at an abandoned mission during the Texas fight for independence. The Texans, led by Colonel Travis, managed to temporarily hold off the Mexican army of Santa Anna. The Texans were outnumbered 183 to 2000 and eventually succumbed. After the fall of the Alamo, General Sam Houston led another group of Texans against Santa Ana's army in San Jacinto where they defeated the Mexican army, which eventually led to an independent Texas.Hancock's famous five-year hiatus comeback film, The Blind Side, an adaptation of Micheal Lewis's 2006 book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game yield and performed outstandingly. The film received countless major awards nominations including an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and a win for Best Actress for Sandra Bullock. The Blind Side is the story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first-round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family. The Blind Side went on to make $309.2 million internationally on a $29 million budget. Not too bad.Just this year, Hancock released his latest HBO Max neo-noir crime thriller, The Littel Things, starring Academy Award winners and heavyweights Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto.Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe Deacon is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city.John also tackled bring the legendary Walt Disney to the big screen in Saving Mr. Banks starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson.Author P.L. Travers travels from London to Hollywood as Walt Disney adapts her novel Mary Poppins for the big screen. The Highwaymen bring John together Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson to the tale that follows the untold true story of the legendary lawmen who brought down Bonnie and Clyde. When the full force of the FBI and the latest forensic technology aren't enough to capture the nation's most notorious criminals, two former Texas Rangers must rely on their gut instincts and old-school skills to get the job done.I had a ball talking with John about filmmaking, how he almost broke Steven Spielberg's Rosebud prop from Citizen Kane when they first met, and so much more. He really goes into detail about his creative process, how he was able to navigate Hollywood, how to deal with the highs and lows of the business and so much more.Enjoy my conversation with John Lee Hancock.

In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing MR. HARRIGAN'S PHONE (2022) which is currently streaming on Netflix. Based on a short story by the Master, Stephen King, the film was written for the screen and directed by John Lee Hancock. The film follows Craig (Jaeden Martell), a young man who's lost his mother, is lonely and facing the challenges of growing up with little to no support, befriends the town's richest man, Mr. Harrigan (Donald Sutherland in a fantastic performance). Mr. Harrigan hires young Craig to come and read to him and after several years their relationship has grown stronger. Craig wins a small jackpot prize from a scratch off gifted to him by Mr. Harrigan and Craig decides to get his friend a smartphone. Shortly after, Mr Harrigan dies and in his grief, Craig places the phone in Mr. Harrigan's pocket before he is buried. In his loneliness and sadness, Craig reaches out to his friend to vent about being bullied. Later, Craig's bully is found dead. Coincidence? Maybe...or maybe not. You'll have to watch the film to find out how the story ends. The film has a run time of 1 h 44 m, and is rated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. The Alamo, directed by John Lee Hancock, is a historical look at the tragic storming of the mission turned fort in 1836 Texas. Though the film boasts incredible sets, well shot historical action, and a wonderful ensemble, it was a box office dud. In fact, it is one of the biggest bombs in history, losing an estimated $146 million. That's nearly 10 Louisiana Purchases. Critics didn't help its prospects. Sitting at 29% on Rotten Tomatoes with 159 reviews, their consensus was unkind. We, unfortunately, have to agree. Outside of Billy Bob Thornton as Davy Crockett, 2004's The Alamo is bereft of personality. It doesn't help that the film is attempting to sell you on characters who are generally written about as being disreputable. The one thing The Alamo does excel at is showing the viewer how dire their situation was. In essence, these 200 or so men were left to die; and the siege on the fort is appropriately harrowing.

Remember The Alamo (...sorry; we had to) -- 2004's "featureless sphere of re-consideration" of one of the country's most notorious battles starring Dennis Quaid as Sam Houston? If you do, our condolences, although despite a bloated runtime, racist music cues, a script that makes the dad from The Conjuring recycle cannonballs, and a misapprehension of what's actually still interesting about this chapter of history, we didn't end up with a super-low overall rating. DQ, however, doesn't seem to know how to play this particular C-plus person, and his reverting to Sling Blade voice in scenes with Billy Bob Thornton is a choice that doesn't work out for him. Starring Michael Keaton as businessman Ray Kroc, the film portrays the story of his creation of the McDonald's fast-food restaurant chain. In spite of Ray's character, he did take an efficient business (delivering fast food) to new heights. Some issues we saw highlighted in the film:1. Lack of vision from the original founders of McDonald's and an unwillingness to scale2. Unclear brand mission and purpose to initial franchisees - he just sold3. Understanding the business - the foundation of the business was not food. It was real estate.4. John Lee Hancock's recent film, “The Little Things,” brings to life many key aspects of viewer engagement and character development that translate from the cinema to the page. Through excellently written mystery and complex, relatable characters, he hooks viewers early on and keeps them on their toes throughout the movie. Hancock is an accomplished screenwriter, director, and producer who is well known for his role in films like “My Dog Skip,” “The Alamo,” and “The Highwaymen.” To get tickets to “The Little Things,” follow the link below. From RottenTomatoes.com: The "feel good movie" may never have had a bigger proponent than John Lee Hancock. As a writer, director, and producer of high profile feature films, Hancock introduced his earnest and often sentimental sensibilities to sports movies like "The Rookie" (2002) and "The Blind Side" (2009), show business pictures like "Saving Mr. Banks" (2013), and the occasional fairy tale jaunt, including "Maleficent" (2014). Achieving big numbers at the box office and awards recognition in the process, Hancock established himself over the course of his decades in the filmmaking game as a reliable perpetrator of crowd-pleasing entertainment. Although intermittent attempts at darker and more severe material proved substantially less fortuitous, Hancock powered through these missteps to become a veritable fixture in the family-directed film community. Whether you're traditionally published or indie, writing a good book is only the first step in becoming a successful author. The days of just turning a manuscript into your editor and walking away are gone.
