Theme is: movies with less than 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, aka "underrated." Just because the people say it's bad doesn't mean it's actually bad. We swapped films that we'd ride for, even if it's really not that good of a film. Amanda watches Denzel go bad in his most famous team-up with Tony Scott in MAN ON FIRE (2004) and Zac watches sapphic internet favorite JENNIFER'S BODY (2009) from Diablo Cody. Even if you haven't seen MAN ON FIRE, you probably have a good idea of whether you'll like it or not, especially once you learn it was directed by latter-day Tony Scott. It's Denzel on a revenge rampage across the border! But does that play a little differently 20 years from when it was released? And how does it hold up against other revenge stories we've covered on the show? There's no explosion like an explosion Denzel Washington walks away from in slow motion. Tony Scott understood this, audiences in 2004 understood this, but critics did not. And so MAN ON FIRE sits with a shocking 38% Tomatometer score, despite giving us the very first Denzel / Dakota Fanning team-up. In this special edition of Get Home Safe, Bill Barnes and I get back together to reminisce over the many events that have taken place since our last recording a few years ago. Let's just say he has plenty to rant about. We cover the fire tragedies taking place in Los Angeles and why it is a direct result of incompetent leadership. We also chat about the upcoming term of President Elect Donald Trump and what changes we hope to see early on. Barnes has a new job that takes him outside of California quite often, so he has plenty of daily drama to report on. Additionally, we look back to when we used to do a weekly episode and wonder if maybe we could throw something together every once in a while to keep the fans craving more.
We gave it a shot, but it was inevitable to bring up Bone Tomahawk time and again when talking about S. Craig Zahler's most recent effort. There's more to this Real Talk segment than unflattering comparisons thought! Gibson's persona, Vaughnn's seriousness, and what can we really make of that Jennifer Carpenter sequence? This podcast is on fire!

Christopher Walken says "a man can be an artist, in anything: Food, whatever... It depends on how good he is at it." Well... Tony Scott's art is making movies 47 times better than they should be. He's about to paint his masterpiece. It's a simple equation: Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, and Christopher Walken in a Tony Scott film. Without those 4 things, this movie would be a mess. Instead, it's a magical confluence of style and performance. So much so, that Greg might offically changes his ridiculous stance on Tony Scott. In this episode, Greg and Joe debate Tony Scott's batting average vs. Ridley Scott's, agree to watch all of Tony Scott's collaborations with Denzel Washington, and most importantly they learn what a "BHB" is. Also: Drinking Games, Important Questions, Joe's Back of the Box, and more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The Back To The Blockbuster team begins our road to retribution by looking back at Man on Fire for its 20th anniversary. Directed by Tony Scott from a screenplay by Brian Helgeland, and based on the 1980 novel of the same name by A.J. Quinnell, the film follows John Creasy (Denzel Washington), a despondent, alcoholic former CIA SAD/SOG officer (and U.S. Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance captain) turned bodyguard, who goes on a revenge rampage after his charge, nine-year-old Lupita “Pita” Ramos (Dakota Fanning), is abducted in Mexico City. The film also stars Christopher Walken, Radha Mitchell, Giancarlo Giannini, Marc Anthony, Rachel Ticotin, and Mickey Rourke.
Cowgirls doin it for themselves, Denzel's violent bodygaurd movie, Cameron Diaz's last comedy, Adult Swim and South Park are at their apex, Streets of Rage closes fr a good while, a really dumb video game movie, the lady Big and the black American Graffitti. All that and more 30, 20, and 10 years ago

Denzel Washington takes the high ground in the deep seas of Crimson Tide (1995), knocks us off our feet in Training Day (2001), and embodies a Man on Fire (2004) here and in so many other movies. Sure, he can handle drama, but Washington absolutely delivers as a man of action! Jason and Ryan did the difficult work of determining dangerous films to dive into for this second of Cinema Drive's two-part Denzel devotional. The Deep Question: Which actors most convincingly play younger and older versions of the same character? This Week's Features:Crimson Tide (1995)Man on Fire (2004)Training Day (2001)
Denzel Washington stars in this intense drama/thriller as Creasey, a sad, alcoholic ex-CIA assassin who finds a new purpose in life as he forms a special friendship with the precocious Pita played by Dakota Fanning. Pita is the daughter of a Mexican industrialist played by Marc Antony who has hired Creasey to serve as a bodyguard since there has been a rash of kidnappings in their area. Tragedy occurs and then Creasey sets off on a brutal mission of revenge where we see his old habits as a trained killer start to manifest themselves. As directed by the late great Tony Scott, this was a film which saw modest success upon initial release twenty years ago but has since gone to grow a significant following.See below for a link to an alternative ending for this movie as discussed within this review:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5RQWlXoD_s&t=170sHost & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
