Today, we hear from Bolivian master tailors who are living and working in the East Bay. Then, we talk with artist Ajuan Mance about the complexities and culture that inspired her new book of illustrations titled “Living While Black.” And, from our podcast New Arrivals, a reading from San Francisco author Thomas McKenna.
Fr. Leo Patalinghug will whet your appetite with "Dining with the Saints," his latest book which brings the Cathodic liturgical year to life, pairing over two hundred saints' stories with an irresistible smorgasbord of international recipes. Thomas McKenna explains the campaign spearheaded by Catholic Action for Faith and Family to educate American clergy on the distribution of Holy Communion.
Thomas McKenna talked about how the Catholic Faith Action group sent out to the clergy', Cardinal Raymond Burke's book on the instructions to priests on denying holy communion to the faithful. Rob McFarland discussed the future of protection for social media platforms. Bryan Enriquez talked about the Hallow app and how it can used for Lent.
Today's Topics: 1) In the first segment we discuss the Real Presence of Jesus within the Holy Eucharist; Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. To illustrate this point, we discuss several recent Eucharistic miracles, where science has demonstrated the Real Presence exists in the Host. We also briefly discuss the tragic loss of our local Bishop David O'Connell. 2) In the second segment, we introduce our guest Sir Knight Thomas McKenna, the Founder and President of Catholic Action for Faith and Family and St. Gianna Physicians Guild. Thomas tells us about his life growing up on a farm but was always a faithful Catholic. From an early age, Thomas was drawn to evangelize those who were in need of the Catholic faith. 3) In this segment, our guest Thomas McKenna, tells us about the latest project which is printing and distributing a treatise by Cardinal Raymond Burke, entitled "Deny Holy Communion?" This work, which has been distributed to every Priest and Bishop in the United States, details the Canonical basis for refusing the Holy Eucharist to those who have publicly remain unworthy to receive the Holy Eucharist. 4) In the final segment, Thomas and the guys discuss the importance of believing in the True Presence. Thomas also discusses the link between the secrets of Fatima and the unworthy reception of the Holy Eucharist. In denying a publicly unworthy communicant, the minister of the Holy Eucharist is, in true charity, saving them from eternal damnation. San Francisco author Thomas McKenna reads from his new book "Moro Warrior." It's the true story of Muhammad Adeel, an extraordinary young Philippine Muslim, who became a guerrilla officer in one of the most remarkable and least known resistance movements of World War Two.
The resistance fighters of the Moro, an indigenous Muslim population of the Philippines, have been described as most the most successful and least-known guerrillas of World War II's Pacific Theatre. The Moro mounted an armed opposition so vigorous that the soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army found themselves outfought time and again by their far less well-armed adversaries. When the soldiers of the Empire of Japan invaded their homeland, the Moros, sometimes with swords as their only weapons, bravely fought on alone after the rapid American surrender of the Philippines. In this episode James is joined by Thomas McKenna, the author of a new book on the Moro warriors, to learn more about arguably the most successful and unlikely resistance movements of the entire Second World War.Tom's book Moro Warrior: The Untold Story of the Most Remarkable Resistance Fighters of World War II in the Pacific is available here. For more Warfare content, subscribe to our Warfare Wednesday newsletter here.If you'd like to learn even more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - enter promo code WARFARE for two weeks free + 50% off your first three months' subscription. MORO WARRIOR tells the remarkable true story of the Philippine Muslim (Moro) resistance fighters of World War II—the most successful and least-known guerrillas of the Pacific Theater. It is the story of Mohammad Adil, a sword-wielding warrior chieftain commissioned as a junior officer in Douglas MacArthur's guerrilla army while still a teenager. Confident in his secret protective powers learned from a Sufi master, Adil roamed the highland rainforests with a price on his head, attacking Japanese outposts, surviving ambushes, and gaining a reputation as a man who could not be killed. www.morowarrior.com Learn more about your ad choices. Question 1: From Paul: Heide Martin’s serving trays in the May/June 2018 are beautiful and I have since made a couple. My question is about keeping the bottom boards flat. I cut some walnut that had been air dried for probably 20 years. In an hour or two both boards cupped. I then sequentially tried wetting one side, wetting both sides, soaking in water, soaking in fabric softener, each time clamping the boards to keep them flat and leaving for days and days to dry out. None of these things worked and in the end I ended up using some walnut plywood instead. How do you folks keep wide, thin boards flat? Working with Warped Panels by Christian Becksvoort #205–May/June 2009 Issue Video Series: Veneering Basics by Bob Van Dyke Question 2: From Richard: In reality we all have limited amount of shop time available. However, if the amount of time you could work on a project was not limited what one piece would you choose to make? Is it legal and/or ethical to build something from the magazine or a video workshop and then sell it? For instance, if a client asks me to build 4 Adirondack chairs, my thought is build them loosely based on what I find at Fine Woodworking, vs. reinventing the wheel with my own design every-time. Is it OK to sell furniture based on FWW articles? by Asa Christiana Question 4: From John: I was reading a FWW article by Steve Latta in issue #241 about draw-bored tenons where he said, “I make pins from riftsawn or quartersawn stock...”. If you’re making dowels, how can it possibly make any difference whatsoever if you use quartersawn or plain sawn boards? I still like Steve Latta, btw. Keep up the great work, see y’all at FWWlive! But, as an intermediate woodworker, I can only see downsides to resawing at the tablesaw. While taking a class, after resawing a few times at the tablesaw, I had to request that I not do it. From Craig: Needed some 16/4 ash stock for table legs. At my local lumberyard, I selected from a bin that contained a mix of flat, riff and quarter sawn boards, I pulled what I’d thought was an ideal piece, had the yard guy write up the tag, and then proceeded to the office. I noticed on the tag that the width of my selection was ~ 12/4. I suggested that I should pay the price for 12/4, rather than 16/4, but they were unpersuaded. It was foolish of me to suggest this, as at this yard the invisible sign on the wall reads “The customer is always wrong” Love the show; Anissa “Long Pause” Kapsales is a nice addition From Cameron: When breaking down a larger board do you prefer long or wide off cuts? After listening to the pod for years now I’m obsessed with getting the best grain selection but don’t want to waste a whole board to get one piece. As an example, I have a board that is 8-in. wide and 4-ft. long. From that I need piece that is 3-in. By 8-in. The best piece is on the edge of the board, 6-in. from the end.
