Appeals Court Blocks Hunter Biden's Attempts to Avoid Trial

The newest move by Hunter Biden, son of the president, to evade his impending court appearance was to no avail, as the federal court of appeals dismissed it on Thursday. This all but confirms his inevitable need to face the matter in court in the near future. Biden had sought intervention from the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, hoping the three-judge panel would overrule the numerous prior refusals for dismissal put forth by Delaware District Judge Maryellen Noreika. Judge Noreika, who is presiding over the trial, has consistently rejected all of Biden's numerous attempts to have the charges brushed off. The diligent legal counsel headed by special prosecutor David Weiss, responsible for pressing the felony charges against Biden, successfully persuaded the appeals court of its lack of jurisdiction to interfere in the case. This, of course, was in favor of the justice system's commitment to fairly process the charges levied by Weiss. As a response to the appeals court's verdict, Biden's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, issued a statement. Lowell communicated their belief in the gravity of the involved issues and the need for a further review of their request. This determination underscores their commitment to exhaust all possible legal routes to defend their client. At this critical junction, Biden's legal representatives are left with the option to pursue a review from the full bench of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Alternatively, they may choose to elevate the matter to the highest court of the land - the U.S. Supreme Court. This will be a significant decision regarding the future trajectory of the case.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

White House Meeting Raises Eyebrows As Biden Legal Tensions Rise

Records unveiled from the revered White House have illuminated an intriguing connection involving a counsel for Hunter Biden, the president's son, and the president along with one of First Lady Jill Biden's senior assistants. This noteworthy meeting transpired shortly before a key moment: when the President's offspring decided not to yield to a congressional subpoena. As per the acclaimed New York Post, Hunter Biden's legal representative, Abbe Lowell, had a significant discussion with Anthony Bernal, a loyal aide to Jill Biden since the previous decade, during an encounter in the East Wing of the White House on December 11, 2023. Moreover, the White House visitor logs indicated that Lowell had another meeting with President Joe Biden right around the same time. Interestingly, it seemed this meeting might have dovetailed with an official Hanukkah celebration that took place on the same day, nudging us to view these interactions in a broader context. High-ranking government figures have raised questions about these meetings. 'In order to bring clarity to the American people, it is imperative that the White House lays open the specifics of these gatherings,' insisted House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY). However, despite multiple requests, the White House remains reluctant to dispel the fog surrounding these events. In a surprising sequence of events, Hunter Biden did not appear before congressional investigators as previously scheduled for his deposition two days post the White House visit. This delay coincided with an ongoing corruption-focused impeachment inquiry concerning the president. Notably, other people in the president's close circle, including his brother James Biden, Hunter Biden's art dealer, and several business associates, were also recipients of congressional subpoenas. Upon the day slated for the deposition, Hunter Biden did make an appearance on Capitol Hill. However, rather than going through with the initially planned meeting with investigators, he chose an unexpected route and held an impromptu press briefing. During this briefing, he emphatically clarified that his business affairs, both domestic and overseas -- which included interactions with China and Ukraine -- did not involve his father financially. Shortly afterwards, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre shared insights, suggesting that President Biden was 'attuned' with his son's planned expressions at the sudden press briefing. This sequence of events seems to imply a coordinated effort between father and son. Hunter Biden eventually consented to participate in the deposition, but not before a looming possibility of being held in contempt of Congress by House Republicans. The deposition took place in late February, several months into the year. Within the deposition's transcript, Hunter Biden concurred with the reference of his father as the 'big guy' in a specific message relating to a suggested business transaction with an organization based in China. The ambiguous term 'big guy' warranted additional attention since it had originated within internal communications. Subsequently, Hunter Biden turned down an offer to deliver a statement before the Oversight Committee at a public hearing slated for March. Abbe Lowell, his attorney, mentioned an unavoidable clash in scheduling as the primary reason behind the refusal. In an interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, James Comer made assertive claims: 'It's time to hold people accountable for the crimes after establishing the miscarriages of justice. And Joe Biden must be prepared to field questions from the Oversight Committee.' In the conversation, Comer referenced multiple statements from Biden associates that indicated President Biden was the anchor point in 'marketing the Biden brand.' Furthermore, Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) of the House Judiciary, together with Comer, drafted a subpoena for Devon Archer, once closely associated with Hunter Biden, last Thursday. This subpoena was aimed at obtaining documents connected to Biden family business dealings that were initially requested in August 2023. These unfolding events depict a complex narrative fraught with unanswered questions regarding public figures and their strategies, and underline the imperative for greater transparency in these matters. As the chapters of this saga continue to be written, the American public and political leaders alike are left grappling with the intricacies of these allegations. Further information, particularly from the White House, will be paramount to not only clear the cloud of doubt but also ensure the operation of the nation remains firmly grounded in the principles of accountability and fair governance. He writes: “Almost everyone now realizes that school closures and other lockdowns, were a colossal mistake. Francis Collins has acknowledged his error of singularly focusing on Covid without considering collateral damage to education and non-Covid health outcomes. That's the honest thing to do, and I hope this honesty will reach Harvard. The public deserves it, and academia needs it to restore its credibility. Science cannot survive in a society that does not value truth and strive to discover it. The scientific community will gradually lose public support and slowly disintegrate in such a culture. The pursuit of truth requires academic freedom with open, passionate, and civilized scientific discourse, with zero tolerance for slander, bullying, or cancellation. Lesser and Mark P. Mills write: “Widespread adoption of EVs will require an unprecedented and staggeringly expensive expansion of local electrical grids. This will require a huge increase in the production of electrical transformers, along with more power plants and transmission lines to produce and deliver energy. This overhaul must include upgrading local grid distribution at the roughly 3,000 electric utilities across the country—the wires, poles and transformers that line our streets. There are 60 million to 80 million distribution transformers in neighborhoods, designed for existing loads. Around one million new ones are sold annually, two-thirds of which replace aged-out transformers. That replacement rate isn't close to meeting the EPA's dreams. Millions more—and heavier—transformers will be needed to handle higher power levels and more frequent use, even if many EVs are charged overnight. This will also require replacing many of the existing utility poles to handle new transformers' extra weight.” You can read the full editorial here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/can-we-power-the-epas-ev-fantasy-electrical-grid-energy-vehicles-a786d535?mod=opinion_lead_pos6 6:05pm- Josh Christenson and David Thompson of The New York Post writes: “Attorneys for first son Hunter Biden fought Wednesday to dismiss a federal indictment out of Los Angeles charging that he evaded $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019 — but still had to acknowledge their client did ‘clearly stupid things.' The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (02/28/2024): 3:05pm- On Wednesday, during a speech from the Senate floor, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced that he would be stepping down from his leadership position at the end of the term in November. Though, he does not plan to resign from the Senate. McConnell, now 82-years-old, has served in the U.S. Senate for nearly 40-years and has been the leader of the Senate Republican Conference since 2007. You can read more here: https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4494536-mcconnell-to-step-down-as-senate-gop-leader/ 3:15pm- According to reports from both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, during a White House meeting on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) joined Democrat leadership—President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries—in pressing Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) to vote on a bill that would send tens-of-billions of dollars of foreign aid to Ukraine. The bill, which passed in the Senate, has stalled in the House of Representatives. 3:40pm- On Tuesday, Michigan held its Republican and Democrat primaries. Donald Trump defeated Nikki Haley 68% to 27%. Meanwhile President Joe Biden won 81% of the vote—though, “uncommitted” received a shocking 101,000 votes, or 13% of the Democrat electorate. According to estimates, “uncommitted” earned enough support to be awarded 2 delegates. Perhaps most alarming for Democrats, “uncommitted”—which beat Biden in Dearborn and Hamtramck, both of which have large Arab American populations—also performed well in East Lansing and Ann Arbor, two college towns. Is Biden struggling to appeal to young voters? And what could that mean for Biden in a general election? 4:05pm- On Wednesday, President Joe Biden had his annual physical at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center—though, he received no cognitive test. During her White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted that Biden “passes a cognitive test everyday” as president. Jones noted that Kennedy is “on track to be in enough states to cost Joe Biden the presidency.” 4:30pm- David Kappos—Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office under Barack Obama (2009-2013)—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a Biden Administration proposal that would reinterpret the Bayh-Dole Act which deals with the development of intellectual property arising from research funded by the federal government—with ownership of the invention/patent being granted to the entity responsible for actually conducting the research. Rather than alter the bill through the legislative process, President Joe Biden may act unilaterally via executive order. And under Biden's proposed alteration to the Bayh-Dole Act's framework, he would weaken patent ownership—hobbling technological, medical, and scientific innovation done at universities, for example, in the process. A letter to Biden, signed by Kappos and other former government officials, states: “We believe the adoption of the Draft Framework would destabilize our nation's entire technology transfer system which is central to U.S. innovation, and we thus implore you to withdraw the framework in its entirety.” 4:50pm- After a seven-hour deposition, Hunter Biden and his attorney Abbe Lowell emerged from an office building on Capitol Hill. Lowell briefly spoke with members of the press and claimed that Republican members of Congress were unable to produce any evidence that Hunter Biden, or the Biden family, ever engaged in corrupt business practices. 5:00pm- Regina Egea—President of the Garden State Initiative (GSI) & served as Chief of Staff to former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss Governor Phil Murphy's proposal that New Jersey adopt a corporate tax rate of 11.5%, which would be the highest in the entire country. How would this new proposed exorbitant tax impact job creation throughout the state? 5:20pm- Jess Bravin of The Wall Street Journal writes: “The Supreme Court agreed to consider whether Donald Trump must stand trial on charges he plotted to overturn the 2020 election, after lower courts rejected his claim that he is entitled to absolute immunity because he was president at the time. The court's move means it will have final say on an issue the judiciary never confronted before Trump. But it also means the former president has bought himself at least another couple of months before any trial, which had been scheduled to start in early March before the immunity battle scuttled those plans.” You find more on this developing story here: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/law/supreme-court-to-say-if-donald-trump-must-stand-trial-in-2020-election-conspiracy-case-1b7f4e3f 5:40pm- Phil Kerpen—President of American Commitment—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's announcement that he will be stepping down at the end of the term in November. Who is likely to replace him as leader of the Senate Republican Conference? Kerpen thinks it might be Sen. John Thune (R-SD) who currently serves as Senate Minority Whip. Plus, according to reports, Congressional leaders have agreed to a short-term bill to avoid a partial government shutdown which was at risk of occurring at the end of the week. And did Governor Gavin Newsom really exempt Panera Bread from new state minimum wage laws because they contributed to his campaign? You can learn more about American Commitment here: https://www.americancommitment.org/about/ 6:05pm- Andrew C. McCarthy of National Review writes: “[Donald] Trump's legal team has asked the Appellate Division-First Department to accept a $100 million bond for the purposes of enabling him to appeal the civil-fraud judgment against him and of stopping New York attorney general Letitia James from beginning to execute that judgment—i.e., to start seizing his property if he can't pay up in cash. Without Presidential Immunity, a President will not be able to properly function, or make decisions, in the best interest of the United States of America. Presidents will always be concerned, and even paralyzed, by the prospect of wrongful prosecution and retaliation after they leave office. January was the first full month in office for Mr Milei, a far-right libertarian who took office in December, and it ended with a positive balance for public-sector finances of US$589 million (S$800 million) at the official exchange rate, the government said late on Feb 16. The figure includes payment of interest on the public debt. It is “the first (monthly) financial surplus since August 2012, and the first surplus for a January since 2011,” the Economy Ministry said, according to the official Telam news agency. Today's show opens with a stunning revelation. Well, okay, not so much for my audience, but for the rest of the worshipers at the alter of the Legacy/mainstream media, the DOJ just admitted that the Hunter Biden laptop is real. We dive in the way-back machine to get some quotes from people who sold us the fake story that the laptop was a piece of Russian disinformation. Next we discuss breaking news regarding the “pipe bomb” that was left outside of DNC headquarters on the eve of January 6, 2021. Much like with the rest of J6, we are just now starting to finally get to the real truth of what happened that day. I'm also happy to share some of the work by Steve Baker on this subject and hope to have him back on the show in the coming months. I then move to the House Oversight Committee hearing on the border and bring you a sound bite from a freshman Democrat Congressman who might one day put Rep. Hank “The Island may capsize” Johnson (D-GA) to the test. Rep. Max Frost (D-FL) wants to tear down the Statue of Liberty, because it represents open borders and if we want to close the southern border, we don't need to keep her standing. There are not enough words in the Thesaurus for STUPID to match the level of stupid Frost brings to the table. Back now to E. Jean Carroll and the hearing yesterday. Turns out Trump attorney Alina Habba got Carroll to admit, on the stand, that she has destroyed evidence that she knew was under subpoena and the Trump-hating judge had to come to Carroll's rescue. The transcript is damning for Carroll, but when the Judge is there to protect the narrative, what difference does it make? Would it surprise you to know the FBI has asked banking institutions to flag accounts that use words like “Trump” or “MAGA” in any memo fields? Or, find out they might flag you if you purchased any religious texts, like the Bible, or purchased gear at Bass Pro Shops? According to new documents uncovered by the Weaponization Subcommittee, that's exactly what the FBI did in the wake of January 6. Next I comment on Iran being part of the Axis of evil and how they were kept at bay until the Biden regime allowed them to regain their funding sources. Now the Biden White House has had to relabel the Houthis as terrorists. Hunter Biden attorney Abbe Lowell got dealt another blow, almost literally, when his request to have Biden's gun charges dismissed. It seems the gun case was covered in cocaine. Lowell said in his filing that Hunter was not on drugs at the time and therefore didn't lie on the federal gun forms. Oops! This leads to a short discussion about Hunter as a narcissistic manipulator. Like any addict, he has developed tools to make people do his bidding, all while trying to gain sympathy from his victims. The difference here is most addicts don't have a VP and now President of the United States as a father. Remember the wildfires in Canada and how so many liberals blamed it on climate change. Instead, I suggest, we can blame one of the biggest in history on 22 year old Dalton Clark Stewart who was convicted of setting the blaze in Nova Scotia in May of 2023. VP Kamala Harris practiced a new line to use repeatedly. She first dropped it on ABC when she said she has to remind people who “brung” all the good times to them. Then she said the exact line on The View the next day. Who thought this would be a cute line to deliver? Finally, Donald Trump gave a speech in New Hampshire yesterday where he promised to add a new item to his platform. He said he will never allow the government to create a Central Bank Digital Currency. If you want my vote, that is a must-have for me. Hunter Biden Ready to Comply with Legal Subpoena Related to Joe Biden Impeachment Inquiry

Abbe Lowell, the legal representation for Hunter Biden, has communicated to both the House Oversight and House Judiciary Committees that his client, the President's son, is willing to respond to any future subpoena if it's distributed as part of a 'properly sanctioned impeachment inquiry'. He signaled this resolve during a recent meeting, promising his client's compliance should a proper hearing or deposition be requested. This promise came forth from Lowell in response to a potential contempt of Congress citation against Hunter Biden. Earlier in the week, the committees formerly proposed this charge against Biden for ignoring previously delivered subpoenas. These had required his appearance for an in-camera deposition linked to the impeachment inquiry against his father, President Biden. Lowell wrote to these committees, arguing that the original subpoenas lacked legal validity, as they were sent out prior to a formal vote in the House of Representatives, a vote which legitimized the impeachment probe against the President. His defense hinged on this technicality, claiming that the subpoenas were prematurely issued. In his letter to the committees, he wrote, 'If you issue a new subpoena that adheres to legality, now that the impeachment inquiry has been authorized, my client will willingly comply for a hearing or deposition.' He went on to assert that they would positively receive such a subpoena on Hunter Biden's behalf.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And then in November, they issued a subpoena for a behind-closed-doors deposition, a tactic that the Republicans have repeatedly misused in their political crusade to selectively leave and mischaracterize what witnesses have said." Hunter Biden was subpoenaed to appear for a closed-door deposition on December 13, 2023. He refused to attend this deposition, instead speaking from the Capitol lawn. Hunter Biden declared that he would only appear in a public session, but Committee on House Administration rules states that depositions of a witness are to take place only in the presence of the "Committee, Committee staff designed by the Chairman or the ranking minority member, an official reporter, the witness, and the witness’ two designated attorneys." Hunter Biden, however, doesn't think this rule should apply to him. https://www.theblaze.com/news/mexican-president-demands-20-billion-and-work-permits-for-10-million-hispanics-before-offering-immigration-help Mexican president demands $20 billion and work permits for 10 million Hispanics before offering immigration help Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador recently revealed what that U.S. must do in order for the Mexican government to help slow down the flow of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, and the price is steep. Fox News Digital reported that Lopez Obrador announced his demands during a press conference on Friday. The development comes just a week after the Mexican president met with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Mexico City. In order for Mexico to help the U.S., Lopez Obrador demanded that the U.S. provide $20 billion to Latin American and Caribbean countries; provide work visas to 10 million Hispanics who have been working in the U.S. for at least 10 years; end sanctions against Venezuela; and put an end to the blockade of Cuba. The demands have put pressure on President Joe Biden, who has not polled well on illegal immigration since he took over the presidency in 2021. The report noted that the border experienced a large surge of migrants this fall, with around 240,000 encounters per month toward the end of 2023. However, some of the decisions — if Biden decides to go through with the proposal — would need to get the approval of Congress. Lopez Obrador has not been shy about challenging U.S. politicians on the topic of illegal immigration. He recently challenged Texas Governor Greg Abbott on one of the state's new immigration laws just last month. Blaze News reported last month that Abbott had ratified legislation that would make illegal immigration a state crime. The law, Senate Bill 4, moved forward after the Biden administration seemed unwilling to enforce federal immigration law. The state authorities will now be able to arrest foreign nationals who sneak into the country illegally, and magistrates will be able to order illegal aliens to leave the country. Lopez Obrador said last month: "The Texas governor acts that way because he wants to be the Republican vice presidential candidate and wants to win popularity with these measures." "He’s not going to win anything. On the contrary, he is going to lose support because there are a lot of Mexicans in Texas, a lot of migrants." However, the law recently ratified in Texas will not punish those who enter the country legally — only those who attempt to circumvent U.S. law. https://notthebee.com/article/parents-who-refuse-to-go-along-with-their-childs-gender-transition-can-now-face-7-years-in-jail-in-scotland Scottish parents could face years in jail for preventing kids from "dressing in a way that reflects their sexual orientation or gender identity" Scotland is really making it simple for parents. Let them trans your kids or you go to jail. You may think that's overstatement, but that's actually the plan in Scotland. Parents who do not go along with "affirming" their child's "gender identity" could face jail for SEVEN YEARS! Proposals published on Tuesday state that actions designed to "change or suppress" another individual's gender identity, causing them physical or psychological harm, would become illegal under the radical law. SNP (Scotland National Party) ministers acknowledged that so-called conversion practices often took place in a "family setting", raising the prospect that parents could be criminalised if they refuse to go along with their child's declaration that they are transgender. Just so you know the extent of this proposal and how it could apply to families, one of the examples of "conversion therapy" punishable by jail time is preventing a child from wearing clothing of their preferred gender identity. So if Billy wants to wear a dress and you stop him you would be guilty of "conversion therapy" and be subject to punishment under the law. Even if you don't do anything, the state could preemptively take action against you based solely on your beliefs! If they know you're a conservative Christian in Scotland they could issue civil orders against you, warning you not to cross the line of telling your kids what to do. The Scottish National Party is currently the largest and most represented party in parliament. They hold nearly a majority in the multi-party system. If they're fully on board with this there's not much that can be done to stop them in parliament. It's important to note this is in the "public consultation" phase which, in Scotland and the UK, means they have to lay out the plan for public feedback, in this case until April, before moving forward with the proposal. So my suggestion, between now and April, is for every freedom and faith-loving Scot to channel his inner Braveheart and publicly oppose this radical anti-family, anti-faith, anti-human proposal from the Scottish liberals. Braveheart - FREEDOM- Play 1:36-1:47 https://mynorthwest.com/3945835/rantz-wa-democrats-deem-ammo-privilege-ammunition-tax-way-end-gun-rights/ Wash. Democrats deem ammo a ‘privilege’ as way to end gun rights Washington Democrats opened the 2024 legislative session with another assault on gun rights. This time they hope to reclassify ammunition as a “privilege” — one that should be subject to an onerous tax because the one thing they love more than taking away guns is taking away your money. State Representatives My-Linh Thai and Liz Berry, both Democrats, introduced House Bill 2238. Under the auspices of public safety, claiming access to ammunition is the cause of violence and not their soft-on-crime policies that go easy on criminals (including those who use guns in their crimes), the bill imposes an 11% sales and use tax on ammunition statewide. This would be an additional tax on top of the sales tax and any other tax that may levied when purchasing ammunition. The city of Seattle, for example, imposes a per-round tax. But the bill also reclassified ammunition, claiming you do not have a right to purchase them as a consumer. Instead, it’s labeled a “privilege.” The legislation creates a new section in pre-existing law that reads, “A use tax is levied on every person in this state for the privilege of using ammunition as a consumer at the rate of 11% of the selling price.” Neither Reps. Thai nor Berry responded to inquiries asking the basis for their claim that ammunition is a privilege. But Washington Democrats have set the stage to make this outrageous claim. Washington Democrats have consistently moved to make gun ownership more onerous for non-criminal Washingtonians. The end goal for Democrats is to ban guns so that we cannot protect ourselves against the criminals they embolden. Instead of a flat-out ban against guns, they’ve hoped to reclassify ammunition as a privilege by severely restricting how much of it a gun owner can use at a time. The Washington Legislature approved a bill to prohibit the sale, distribution, and manufacture of firearm magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. This is meant to set the precedent claiming Washingtonians do not have a constitutional right to ammunition. Like most of their clearly unconstitutional bills, they’re based on a flimsy and purposefully obtuse understanding of the right to bear arms. The Washington State Constitution, Article I, Section 24, clearly states that “the right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired.” You cannot bear arms if the firearm has no ammunition in it. This provision, like the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, implicitly includes all necessary components of firearms like ammunition as essential to the protected exercise of the right to bear arms. Without access to ammunition, the right to bear arms would be rendered meaningless, as firearms without ammunition are unable to fulfill their intended purpose in defense of oneself or the state. In an ironic twist, Democrats are the best gun salesmen. Their actions are pushing Washingtonians into purchases they might not otherwise make. Washington Democrats’ interest in banning guns does not extend to the criminals they support with legislation that keeps them out of prison before the end of their sentences under the claim the criminal justice system is racist. By passing legislation that is clearly tied to the rise in crime, they give every Washingtonian ample reason to purchase firearms for self-defense. We have a rise in violent crime in Seattle, where homicides have hit historic highs. Democrats pretend they hold no blame in this new reality. State Reps Tarra Simmons and David Hackney pushed a bill in the 2022 legislative session to lessen charges against drive-by shooters. It would even be applied retroactively to release a drive-by shooter serving time. They claimed the change promoted “racial equity in the criminal legal system” because they implied too many black people commit drive-by shootings and it’s unfair for them to be charged more than white people who don’t commit as many drive-by shootings. It was as silly an argument as it was racist. Only after considerable public pushback, did the bill die. But it seems reasonable to want a firearm to protect yourself when you have pro-criminal legislators pushing dangerous bills. State Rep. Roger Goodman, another anti-gun Democrat, is back this year with HB 1268. It would prevent judges from offering additional years of prison to violent criminals who use guns during their crimes (“stacking” on gun enhancement charges). It even offers “good time credits” (or earned release time) to felons serving time on a firearm or deadly weapon enhancement. Any one of these criminals released early is reason enough to own a firearm of your own.

Article: https://www.realnewsnow.com/reporter-to-hunter-what-kind-of-crack-do-you-normally-smoke-mr-biden/ Hunter Biden, son of US President, Joe Biden, unexpectedly showed up in the nation's legislative halls on a recent Wednesday, culminating in a flurry of activity as journalists flocked around him. It happened during a House Oversight Committee assembly, where his appearance quickly became the day's breaking news. His abrupt decision to leave the facility post-event saw a frenzy of inquiries being hurled towards him, as news specialists scrambled to garner a reaction. Hunter's legal counsel, Abbe Lowell, endeavored to bring a sense of calm among the crowd, assuring them that his client would address their queries, should they provide him the space to speak on his behalf. The melodrama was palpable amid the crowd of reporters, each trying to outdo the other in terms of securing the prized response from the star of the day, Mr. Biden himself. As can be expected, the Oversight Committee assembly was equally intense, with frayed tempers and soaring passions evident at nearly every turn. Representative Nancy Mace of North Carolina took center stage in the jousting of words between the opposing sides. Mace left no stone unturned to question the reasoning behind Hunter's sudden appearance at the hearing, asserting that his presence warranted an explanation. Amid the disagreement ensuing from her dialogue, Hunter's legal counsel found himself in an active spar with Mace, a testament to the unwavering determination on both ends. This tension-filled scenario saw Biden making an abrupt departure from the heated proceeding. Commenting on his hasty exit, Congressman Marjorie Taylor Greene did not mince words, prompting her to voice out her disappointment by labelling him as 'a coward'. This judgement didn't go unnoticed and resulted in a dramatic wrap-up as Greene continued her commentary on Biden's sudden vacating of the venue. Her stern words resonated with her fellow conservative audience, demonstrating her commitment to her values and political stance. Throughout the dramatic proceedings of the hearing, there was one undeniable fact - Hunter Biden had become the focal point of the event, attracting the spotlight in a legislative assembly typically characterized by rigid decorum and measured exchanges. His unexpected presence not only stunned the assembly but also arguably turned it into an emotionally-charged discourse. Each parties' representative fiercely protected their political interests, reflecting the classic dynamics of our nation's controversial political landscape. Events like these only underline the fervor of the country's diverse political climate, where polarized views lead to fiery debate sessions and grave accusations are thrown into the mix, often leading to sensational media coverage. The dialogue on this day was a reminder of how these exchanges of viewpoints contribute to shaping nationwide discourses and inform the democratic dialogue. It served as a display of passion, commitment and also the battle of political wills that inform such discussions. Indeed, this incident focused on Hunter Biden can be seen as a microcosm of the ongoing political tension prevalent in our nation today, further highlighting the divide that exists between political ideologies. Nevertheless, one thing remains clear - that in the chaos and disparity of opinions, the process of voicing concerns and anxieties, of questioning and being questioned, remains integral to the functioning of our democracy. And so, these events, much like this recent spotlight on Hunter Biden, while stirring extensive media coverage and nationwide debates, are an inherent part of our nation's Democratic discourse, reflecting the political diversity and vibrancy alive within the United States today. This Day in Legal History: Birth of Alice Paul January 11 marks an important date in legal history, as it is the birthdate of Alice Paul, a pivotal figure in the women's suffrage movement in the United States. Born on this day in 1885, in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, Paul grew up in a well-to-do Quaker family known for its commitment to equality and social justice. Her upbringing played a significant role in shaping her advocacy for women's rights.Alice Paul attended Swarthmore College and later went on to earn a doctorate in social work from the University of Pennsylvania. Her academic journey took her to England, where she joined the women's suffrage movement, learning militant tactics from Emmeline Pankhurst's Women's Social and Political Union. Paul returned to the United States in 1910, bringing with her a new vigor and approach to the suffrage movement. In the U.S., she found the existing suffrage movement lacking in dynamism and urgency. To revitalize it, she joined the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) and quickly became the head of their Congressional Committee. Her first major campaign was the organization of a suffrage parade in Washington, D.C., on March 3, 1913, strategically timed to coincide with President Woodrow Wilson's inauguration.Paul's tactics were notably more aggressive than those of her predecessors. She organized pickets, parades, and strikes, which often led to her and other suffragists being arrested. Her efforts, however, significantly boosted public awareness and support for the suffrage cause. In 1916, Paul formed the National Woman's Party (NWP), a more radical group focused solely on securing a constitutional amendment for women's suffrage. The NWP's relentless campaigning, including picketing the White House, was instrumental in leading to the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, granting women the right to vote.Following the suffrage victory, Alice Paul continued her advocacy, authoring the Equal Rights Amendment in 1923, a piece of legislation designed to guarantee equal legal rights for all American citizens regardless of sex. Though it has yet to be ratified, the ERA remains a testament to her lifelong commitment to gender equality.Alice Paul's legacy is profound, and her strategies and philosophies continue to influence civil rights movements. She passed away on July 9, 1977, and was laid to rest in the Westfield Friends Burial Ground in Cinnaminson, New Jersey, continuing to inspire generations of activists in the fight for equality. Happy 138th birthday, Ms. Paul. The recent legal victory of the IRS in a significant tax fraud case involving syndicated easements could mark a turning point in the government's approach to these controversial tax transactions. In the case, real estate developer Jack Fisher, aged 71, was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to pay $458 million in restitution by the US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. His co-defendant, James Sinnott, received a 23-year sentence and a similar restitution order. The case centered around a fraudulent scheme using syndicated easements, where partnerships buy land and donate development rights to claim large tax deductions. Fisher and Sinnott's operation, which started in 2008 and expanded in 2013, involved inflated appraisals and forged documents. This type of transaction has seen nearly $36 billion in unwarranted deductions claimed from 2010 to 2018, leading to bipartisan legislation in 2022 to curb such practices. The substantial prison sentences and restitution in this case represent a rare and significant win for the government against a practice that has long eluded effective regulation. The outcome could influence future prosecutions and IRS cases in Tax Court, making it easier for the IRS to win against similar deals. The case highlights the need for the IRS to effectively review returns and manage valuation-based Tax Court cases, which have been both challenging and time-consuming.IRS Criminal Investigation Chief Jim Lee emphasized the agency's commitment to tackling abusive tax shelters using their financial expertise. The magnitude of the sentences and restitution should serve as a deterrent to those still promoting syndicated transactions. Legal experts and observers note that the case exposes the blatant valuation abuses in these transactions and underscores the urgency for individuals involved in similar activities to seek legal advice. The case against EcoVest, a company promoting syndicated easements, was settled in March 2023 without admission of wrongdoing, although the government had alleged $3 billion in improper deductions. The outcome of Fisher and Sinnott's case is seen as a warning to others in the industry, signaling the government's increased scrutiny and potential legal repercussions in such tax evasion schemes.IRS Victory in Land Tax Case Could Speed Government CrackdownThe civil fraud trial involving former U.S. President Donald Trump in New York is nearing its conclusion, with closing arguments scheduled for Thursday. Trump is facing nearly $370 million in penalties as New York Attorney General Letitia James alleges that he and his associates significantly inflated the value of his assets for over a decade to obtain better financial terms from banks. Trump denies these allegations, claiming the trial is politically motivated and a hindrance to his 2024 presidential campaign.Justice Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over the trial, rejected Trump's request to deliver his own closing arguments, aiming to avoid a "campaign speech" scenario. This trial is one of several legal challenges Trump faces amid his campaign to contest the 2024 election against President Joe Biden. Engoron will deliver the verdict later, without a jury, after previously finding Trump liable for fraud in September. The focus of the trial has been on determining the amount Trump should pay in ill-gotten gains.Trump has expressed frustration with Engoron's handling of the trial, including a gag order and a $15,000 fine for violating it. The state's lawyers have presented evidence that Trump consistently overvalued his assets. Trump, in his testimony, defended his valuations and accused James and Engoron of political bias. A notable moment in the trial was the testimony of Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer, who claimed Trump directed him to manipulate asset values on financial statements.Trump's children, Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka, also testified, denying involvement in preparing the financial statements. While Ivanka is not a defendant like her brothers, all three have denied any wrongdoing. In addition to this trial, Trump faces potential criminal trials related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, handling of classified documents, and a hush money case in New York. He has pleaded not guilty in all these cases.Trump's $370 million civil fraud trial set to conclude in NY | ReutersU.S. House Republicans are moving towards holding Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, in contempt of Congress. This action follows Hunter's refusal to testify in a closed-door deposition concerning an impeachment probe of his father. Hunter unexpectedly appeared at a House Oversight Committee meeting, causing a stir and leading to heated exchanges between lawmakers.Republican Representative Nancy Mace criticized Hunter for not attending the deposition, accusing him of being afraid. The House Republicans claim that President Biden and his family improperly benefited from policy actions during his vice-presidency from 2009 to 2017, allegations both the White House and Hunter Biden deny.Hunter Biden is facing separate legal issues, including a federal court appearance in Los Angeles regarding unpaid taxes of $1.4 million and charges in Delaware related to lying about drug use while purchasing a handgun. He has pleaded not guilty to the Delaware charges.Democratic Representative Jared Moskowitz questioned why the committee refused Hunter's offer to testify then and there. Hunter Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, stated that they had previously offered to cooperate with the House committees but were ignored. Lowell criticized the subpoena for a private deposition as a tactic misused by Republicans. The full House usually votes on contempt of Congress certification following a committee vote. Since 2008, the House has held 10 people in contempt, but the Justice Department has only sought indictments for two: Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro, advisors to former President Donald Trump. There is no precedent for a sitting president's family member being held in contempt of Congress. Contempt of Congress carries a penalty of up to $100,000 and imprisonment for one to 12 months.House Republicans move toward holding Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress | ReutersThomas Girardi, a disbarred plaintiffs attorney, is set to stand trial for fraud beginning May 21 in Los Angeles, significantly earlier than the February 2025 date his lawyers requested. The trial's scope will be narrowed to focus on four specific cases brought by Girardi's clients, as decided by the prosecutors to avoid delays. The Assistant US Attorney, Ali Moghaddas, emphasized that the trial would not go beyond the indictment's scope.Judge Josephine Staton of the Central District of California remarked that the case doesn't seem overly complex and has been pending for quite some time. Girardi's public defenders had sought a later trial date to prepare adequately, especially after focusing on assessing Girardi's ability to stand trial due to his cognitive impairment. In early January, Judge Staton determined that Girardi had mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment but had exaggerated his decline to avoid trial. The prosecution expressed concerns that any further delay might again raise questions about Girardi's competency. The discovery process has been extensive, with the government subpoenaing over a dozen banks, the state bar, and bankruptcy trustees for complaints against Girardi and others. However, much of the received documentation was deemed irrelevant to the current case. The prosecution has been asked to highlight key documents for the defense.Girardi faces wire fraud charges in Los Angeles related to allegedly stealing millions from clients in litigation over the 2018 Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX crash. He also faces charges in Illinois. The case will reconvene on February 23 to discuss discovery matters.Girardi Trial Set for May, Scope Is ‘Significantly' Narrowed (1) Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Hunter Biden was subpoenaed to appear for a closed-door deposition on December 13, 2023.

Hunter Biden's Ties to Burisma Ignites Renewed Scrutiny amidst GOP-led Impeachment Inquiry

FARA Violation Scandal: Hunter Biden at Forefront with His Burisma Connection The Ukrainian energy corporation Burisma, where President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, was once a well-compensated board member, has recently become the focus of renewed scrutiny amidst an ongoing impeachment inquiry spearheaded by Republicans. This past week, Burisma enlisted the services of a New York-based law firm and formally registered as a foreign agent. While this move is anticipated to stir up the political landscape, it must be noted that the company's move to register is linked to activities transacted back in 2016. Details of the engagement were made public through the federal government's Foreign Agent Registration Act database. Natalie Winters of The National Pulse brought attention to the matter through the X platform, highlighting an array of screenshots from the filings. Republicans have been fairly vocal in their suspicion of Hunter Biden's involvement; Winters even suggested it could be seen as evidence for accusations that Hunter Biden violated the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA), but definitive proof is still absent. According to Winters, the enlisted law firm, Cravath, Swaine & Moore, was initially engaged to ward off an investigation from the Obama administration. High-level confabs were supposedly conducted with eminent officials including Marie Yovanovitch, a notable witness in the anti-Trump impeachment proceedings. Winters provocatively asked if Hunter Biden would face a situation akin to Rudy Giuliani. The filed documents shed some light on Burisma's legal situation. Mr. Buretta, Burisma's lawyer, was hired in January 2016 to represent Mykola Zlochevsky, a key player in the company, against potential U.S. government investigations. The scope of the representation was later expanded to encompass Burisma Holdings Limited and included investigations in Ukraine that continued up to April 2017. The legal relationship between Burisma and its lawyer was governed by the same engagement letter used with Mykola Zlochevsky. The filing notes that the representation covered both 'registrable and non-registrable activities', emphasizing the complexity of the case. Fast-forward to 2022, special counsel John Durham decided to expand his prosecutorial team; one of the additions was Adam Small, a seasoned trial attorney with extensive experience in prosecuting cases related to the Espionage Act, FARA violations, wire fraud, money laundering, and cybercrime. Information from Small's LinkedIn profile indicates that he has diligently served the United States Department of Justice, investigating and prosecuting crimes involving various acts, including FARA, export control, and state-sponsored cyber intrusions. In September, the Republican-led House Weighs and Means Committee released several pivotal documents just as the impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden was set to begin. One document appeared to lend consistency to speculations that the FBI and the IRS were investigating potential FARA violations involving Hunter Biden, particularly around lobbying for foreign entities. A key piece of the timeline was in August 2020, when Delaware Assistant US Attorney Lisa Wolfe sent a message to agents indicating a focus on 'FARA evidence only.' Interestingly, the email also had a subtext suggesting the Justice Department prosecutors effectively limiting the span of investigations on Hunter Biden; this included removing traces of Joe Biden's involvement. As reported by USA Today, Hunter Biden, who was already encumbered by charges related to firearms and an ongoing tax investigation, faced the possibility of being charged on grounds of not registering as a 'foreign agent' while collaborating with businesses in Ukraine and China. In the whirlwind of these events, the Justice Department has been recalibrating its approach towards enforcing FARA. They are re-examining the necessity for people to disclose any lobbying work they've done for foreign governments aiming to influence U.S policies. The reporting further mentioned an Inspector General's report that declared enforcement of the law being 'rare' and mostly asking non-compliers to register retroactively as foreign agents. In the current polarized atmosphere, special counsel David Weiss is determining whether Hunter Biden should have reported his international activities. Congressional Republicans insist that Biden is being treated preferentially due to his familial status. On a related note, Abbe Lowell, one of Hunter Biden's legal representatives, had previously accomplished an acquittal of another defendant accused of acting as a foreign agent. Given the intrigue around the correlation between Hunter Biden's past board membership at Burisma and the allegations associated with FARA, the legal and political implications are immense. Republicans are employing a microscope to delve into these allegations, striving to uncover any substantive infringement that might have occurred. While definitive evidence and a conclusive ruling are yet to emerge, the current situation amplifies the need for clear and indisputable rules for political and corporate connections, especially when it connects to foreign powers. As the investigation intensifies, the outcome may hold resounding implications not only for Hunter Biden but also for the wider political and regulatory landscape.   This Post First Appeared on Real News Now: https://realnewsnow.com/hunter-bidens-ties-to-burisma-ignites-renewed-scrutiny-amidst-gopled-impeachment-inquiry/ Visit Real News Now for more breaking news and stories https://www.realnewsnow.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RealNewsNowApp/ X Twitter: https://twitter.com/realnewsapp Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/realnews/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@realnewsnowappSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In response, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) said they plan to initiate “contempt” proceedings against Hunter Biden. 3:15pm- The House of Representatives is holding a hearing to formalize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. House Republicans allege there is evidence suggesting then-Vice President Joe Biden derived financial benefit from his immediate family's foreign business dealings, and that those family members profited from their connection to the White House. Earlier this week, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson told reporters that he believes House Republicans have the votes necessary to initiate the inquiry. 3:30pm- During a press briefing on Wednesday, Fox News journalist Peter Doocy asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre why President Joe Biden hasn't just pardoned his son Hunter, who has been accused of several tax evasion felonies as well as federal firearm charges. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Dec. 8 at 6 a.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — Hunter Biden has been indicted on nine tax charges in California as a special counsel investigation into the business dealings of President Joe Biden's son intensifies against the backdrop of the looming 2024 election. The indictment Thursday includes three felonies and six misdemeanors. Special counsel David Weiss says Hunter Biden “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills.” Defense attorney Abbe Lowell argues prosecutors bowed to political pressure in the case, which had been expected to end with a plea deal before it imploded over the summer. The new charges are in addition to federal firearms charges in Delaware alleging Hunter Biden broke laws against drug users having guns in 2018. BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. and Iraqi officials say a rocket attack at the sprawling U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has caused minor damage but no casualties. Iran-backed militias in Iraq have claimed responsibility for dozens of attacks that targeted bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria since the Israel-Hamas war began two months ago. The embassy is in the heavily fortified Green Zone of Iraq's capital. An Iraqi security official said 14 Katyusha rockets were fired on Friday, of which some struck near one of the U.S. Embassy's gates. A U.S. military official said rockets hit the vicinity of the Union III base that houses offices of the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq. WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says there is “a gap” between what Israel pledged to do to protect Palestinian civilians and the results so far since it began intensive military operations against Hamas in the southern Gaza Strip. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say the suspect in a deadly shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, had a list of targets at the school and at East Carolina University in North Carolina, where he once worked. Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Thursday that the suspect, identified as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, also had 150 additional rounds of ammunition before he was killed by police. Officials say three faculty members were killed and a fourth was wounded Wednesday. WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has voted to censure Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman for triggering a fire alarm in a U.S. Capitol office building when the chamber was in session. The New York congressman Thursday became the third Democrat in the House to be admonished this year through the process. “Censure me next. That's how worthless your effort is,” Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said on the floor late Wednesday. “It has no credibility. No integrity. No legitimacy. Censure me next, and I'll take that censure and I'll wear it next week, next month, next year like a badge of honor.” The vote is the latest example of how the chamber has begun to deploy punishments like censure, long viewed as a punishment of last resort, routinely and often in strikingly partisan ways. The Steelers see their playoff chances take a hit on Thursday Night Football, Jayden Daniels garners a big postseason college football award, the NBA's in-season tournament final is set, and the Sharks rally from a big deficit for an overtime win. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is putting pharmaceutical companies on notice. Washington is warning them that if the price of certain drugs is too high, the government might cancel their patent protection and allow rivals to make their own versions. Under a plan announced Thursday, the government would consider overriding the patent for high-priced drugs that have been developed with the help of taxpayer money and letting competitors make them in hopes of driving down the cost. The administration did not immediately release details about how the process will work and how it will deem a drug costly enough to act. If the plan is enacted, drugmakers are almost certain to sue. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas judge has given a pregnant woman whose fetus had a fatal diagnosis permission to get an abortion in an unprecedented challenge to the state's ban that took effect after Roe v. Wade was overturned last year. It was unclear Thursday how quickly or whether Kate Cox, a 31-year-old mother of two from the Dallas area, will be able to obtain an abortion. State District Judge Maya Guerra Gamble has granted a temporary restraining order allowing Cox to have an abortion. The state has not said if it plans to appeal. Cox is 20 weeks pregnant. Her attorneys say Cox went to an emergency room this week for a fourth time during her pregnancy. PARIS (AP) — When Notre Dame went up in flames in 2019, people who worked in the cathedral felt orphaned. With the reopening of the world-famous Paris landmark drawing closer by the day, they're now beginning to picture their return to the place they call home. They are impatient to breathe life back into its restored stones and vast spaces with their songs and prayers. On Friday, Notre Dame's rebirth from the devastating fire will hit a major milestone. It will begin the last year of repair work before the cathedral reopens its huge doors to the public on Dec. 8, 2024. French President Emmanuel Macron will mark the 12-month countdown by donning a hard hat and touring the fenced-off reconstruction site. LONDON (AP) — Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in sometimes angry testimony to Britain's inquiry into the COVID-19 pandemic, on Thursday defended himself against suggestions that his indifference and failure to heed the advice of scientists led to thousands of unnecessary deaths. In a second day of sworn testimony, Johnson rejected claims that he was prepared to let older people die to protect the economy and that he was too slow to order a second national lockdown as infection rates began to rise in the autumn of 2020. Christopher Nolan's “Oppenheimer” will get a theatrical release in Japan after all. The Japanese distributor Bitters End said Thursday that it will play in the country's theaters in 2024. In a statement, Bitters End wrote that the decision was made, “following months of thoughtful dialogue associated with the subject matter and acknowledging the particular sensitivity for us Japanese.” “Oppenheimer” is about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the so-called “father of the atomic bomb,” and chronicles the development of the weapon during World War II. The film addresses but does not explicitly depict the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the U.S. NEW YORK (AP) — A woman has sued the hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs claiming he and two other men raped her 20 years ago in a New York City recording studio when she was 17. The lawsuit filed Wednesday accuses Combs, Harve Pierre, the former president of Combs' Bad Boy Entertainment, and a third man of plying the accuser with drugs and alcohol and then raping her in 2003. Combs denied the allegations in a statement and vowed to fight for his name. The lawsuit follows three other lawsuits accusing Combs of abuse. Combs has denied those allegations as well. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. This past week, the leaders of the House Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee, Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), respectively, took significant steps towards ensuring accountability within their legislative purview. They sent a stern letter to Hunter Biden, informing him of the legal consequences of not acquiescing to their request for testimonial evidence. The duo communicated to Mr. Biden's legal counsel, Abbe Lowell, that their issued subpoena necessitated an appearance from his client, Robert 'Hunter' Biden. This legal summons sought a deposition from Biden, expected to take place on December 13, 2023. The chairmen's correspondence was a rebuttal to the earlier received letters from Hunter's legal representation dated November 28, 2023, and December 6, 2023, which had raised objections to the initially issued subpoena for deposition. The Chairman duo rendered those objections inadequate and reiterated the legal expectations of commitment from the subpoena recipient. They highlighted this through their clear words - 'the subpoenas compel him to appear for a deposition on December 13.' The letter conveyed more than a mere invitation: it represented an unambiguous ultimatum. Hunter Biden was warned that should he choose not to appear for his scheduled deposition, this would be perceived as a serious move. Their measure of response? Entry into contempt of Congress proceedings.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

BlazeTV host Chad Prather and contributor Jaco Booyens join the show to discuss President Biden's failing economy. Yesterday, Fox News' Peter Doocy exposed White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre as she tried to gaslight Americans into thinking that the economy is good. Biden's "Bidenomics" message is flopping with voters. Jean-Pierre claimed that "inflation is moderating because of the actions that this president has taken." KJP claimed "prices are going down," pointing to the costs of turkey and gas. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona misinterpreted a famous President Ronald Reagan quote that expressed his views of the government's role in people's lives. Chicago's Evanston High Schools has implemented a new approach to raise the grades in a certain population of its schools. It will now provide a segregated class for black and Hispanic students. Proponents argue that such segregation can boost minority students' confidence and performance, addressing historical disparities. Carron Phillips, a writer from the sports website Deadspin, attempted to accuse a young boy of racism for dressing up as the Kansas City Chiefs' mascot. Phillips alleged that the very young fan wore blackface and shared a screenshot from social media where only one side of the boy's face was visible. He not only placed blame on the boy's parents but also demanded accountability from the league. What he did not show the reader was that the little boy wore both black and red face paint, not the blackface he described. President Biden's son, Hunter Biden, has agreed to testify before Congress later in December. Hunter Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, conveyed her client's preference for a public hearing, citing concerns about selective leaks and a one-sided process. House Republicans responded, expressing their openness to a public testimony on December 13 while maintaining their request for a closed-door interview. Tony Bobulinski, who has previously identified as a business collaborator of Hunter Biden, put forth a proposal for a mutual appearance in a Congressional testimony. This comes subsequent to the legal team for the President's son, Hunter Biden, alleging that Bobulinski may have falsified information presented to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) concerning their professional engagement. According to Fox News, a document containing 10 pages sent from Hunter Biden's legal agent, Abbe Lowell, to U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Matthew Graves, implied that Bobulinski delivered false information during an October 23, 2020 interview with the FBI. In this interaction, Bobulinski discussed his association with the President's son and details about their joint venture. The letter urged Graves to scrutinize Bobulinski's declarations which it characterizes as 'untrue', in relation to his actions. Bobulinski reportedly worked in partnership with Hunter Biden in establishing SinoHawk Holdings, their mutual enterprise with CEFC, a Chinese energy corporation. The situation progressed to the extent where Bobulinski put forth his willingness to testify for a grand jury focusing on Hunter Biden, however, no response was claimed to have been received.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this day in history, October 4, 1974, the trial of key Watergate conspirators began, marking a seminal moment in American political history. The defendants were H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, John Mitchell, Robert Mardian, and Kenneth Parkinson. Each played a significant role in the Nixon administration and faced serious charges related to the Watergate scandal.H.R. Haldeman, Nixon's Chief of Staff, was accused of conspiracy and obstruction of justice. He was ultimately convicted and served 18 months in prison. John Ehrlichman, a close advisor to Nixon, faced similar charges and was also convicted, serving 18 months. John Mitchell, the former Attorney General, was charged with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and perjury. He was convicted and served 19 months in prison.Robert Mardian, a lesser-known figure, was initially convicted but his conviction was later overturned on appeal. Kenneth Parkinson, a lawyer for the Committee for the Re-Election of the President, was acquitted of all charges. The Watergate scandal originated from a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972 and the Nixon administration's subsequent attempts to cover it up. Investigations revealed that Nixon had approved plans to conceal the administration's involvement, leading to a constitutional crisis and his eventual resignation. The trial was a culmination of investigations by both the Department of Justice and the U.S. Senate Watergate Committee. These investigations were intensified by the discovery of a voice-activated taping system in the Oval Office, which provided crucial evidence against Nixon and his associates. The scandal led to the indictment of 69 people, with 48 of them being convicted, many of whom were top Nixon administration officials. It also led to the impeachment process against Nixon, who became the only U.S. president to resign from office. His successor, Gerald Ford, later pardoned him.The Watergate scandal had a lasting impact on American politics, leading to greater scrutiny of political actions and making the term "Watergate" synonymous with political scandal. It also led to significant reforms in campaign financing and governmental ethics. It remains a cultural touchstone, standing as the platonic ideal of the heights of presidential scandal until a young upstart out of Queens descended an escalator into the presidency and rewrote what was possible in the realm of scandal and legal entanglements. Judge Arthur Engoron, overseeing Donald Trump's civil fraud trial in New York, has imposed a gag order on Trump and others involved in the case. This decision came after Trump criticized the judge's top law clerk on social media. Engoron warned of "serious sanctions," potentially including contempt of court, for any violations of the gag order. The case, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accuses Trump, his adult sons, and the Trump Organization of inflating asset values to secure favorable loans and insurance terms.Trump had shared a social media post featuring the clerk and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, calling for the case's dismissal. The post was later deleted. James is seeking at least $250 million in fines and various bans against Trump and his sons from running businesses in New York.Trump, who attended the trial, told reporters he plans to testify. The first government witness was Trump's former accountant, Donald Bender, who stated that financial statements for the Trump Organization were largely based on self-reported figures. Trump's lawyer questioned the accuracy of these reports. The trial could last until December and will review additional claims including falsifying business records and insurance fraud. Other witnesses expected to testify include the Trump Organization's former CFO and Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen. Trump also faces four criminal indictments and a civil damages trial for defamation, all of which he denies.Trump hit with gag order after lashing out at court clerk in NY fraud case | ReutersThe U.S. Supreme Court recently heard arguments concerning the funding structure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency established to regulate predatory lending. The case is an appeal against a lower court ruling that found the CFPB's funding mechanism unconstitutional, as it draws money from the Federal Reserve rather than from budgets passed by Congress. Both liberal and some conservative justices, including Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, expressed skepticism about the argument that the CFPB's funding violates the Constitution's "appropriations clause."Kavanaugh noted that Congress could change the funding structure if needed, while Barrett questioned how the challengers would rectify the issue. U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued that the funding mechanism is lawful and similar to those of other financial regulators like the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. However, conservative justices like Clarence Thomas and Chief Justice John Roberts raised concerns about the agency's setup, questioning whether it undermines Congress's control over appropriations and the constitutional separation of powers. The CFPB was created in 2010 to curb predatory lending practices and has delivered $16 billion in relief to consumers through various enforcement actions. The case has broader implications as it could affect the power of federal agencies, a topic the court is set to tackle in its new term.Supporters of the CFPB warn that a ruling against the agency could leave consumers vulnerable to deceptive practices and jeopardize existing rules. A decision is expected by the end of June.US Supreme Court appears wary in case targeting consumer financial watchdog | ReutersHunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to lying about his drug use while purchasing a handgun in 2018. This marks the first-ever criminal prosecution of a sitting U.S. president's adult child. Hunter Biden faces three counts, including lying on a federal form to acquire a Colt Cobra handgun and being an illegal drug user in possession of the firearm. The hearing took place in a federal courthouse in Wilmington, Delaware, and lasted 25 minutes.Conditions for Hunter Biden's release pending trial were set, including clearing travel with a probation officer and abstaining from illegal drugs and alcohol. His attorney, Abbe Lowell, plans to file a motion to dismiss the case, arguing that a previous agreement to resolve the gun and separate tax charges should still be in effect. The case has constitutional implications, especially after the U.S. Supreme Court expanded gun rights under the Second Amendment last year. The trial sets a historic precedent as it involves the adult child of a sitting president who is campaigning for reelection. The case has garnered significant attention, especially from Republicans who have long scrutinized Hunter Biden's activities. A ruling is expected to be filed by November 3.Hunter Biden pleads not guilty to gun charges in Delaware court | ReutersSam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the now-defunct FTX cryptocurrency exchange, is facing trial on charges of stealing billions from customers. The trial resumed with the aim of completing jury selection and moving on to opening statements. The case comes nearly a year after FTX's collapse, which had a significant impact on financial markets and damaged Bankman-Fried's reputation. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan has selected a pool of nearly 50 jurors, with the final panel expected to be chosen soon.Prosecutors allege that Bankman-Fried misused FTX customer funds to support his hedge fund, Alameda Research, acquire luxury real estate, and make political donations. Three former associates, who have already pleaded guilty, are expected to testify against him. Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty, and his defense is likely to argue that while he may have mismanaged risk, he did not engage in theft. The defense may also attempt to shift blame onto the cooperating witnesses, suggesting they are implicating Bankman-Fried to receive lighter sentences. Bankman-Fried has been in detention since August for likely witness tampering. The trial is closely watched given its implications for the cryptocurrency sector, which has been marred by scams and regulatory scrutiny.Sam Bankman-Fried's trial to resume with jury selection, opening statements | ReutersThe IRS's recent Notice 2023-63 has redefined software development for the purpose of current year expensing, requiring most related costs to be amortized. This change poses a significant challenge for "bootstrap" software developers who typically self-fund their projects. These startups often rely on expensing their software development costs, which can make up a large portion of their annual expenses.Previously, Section 174 of the tax code allowed businesses to either deduct research and experimentation costs in the current year or amortize them over a period. Most businesses preferred the former option as it allowed them to recoup costs immediately. However, the new IRS rules have created ambiguity, making it more advantageous for some to acquire software rather than develop it, thus discouraging innovation. The new rules also introduce an administrative burden, requiring developers to meticulously track and categorize their activities to differentiate between what can and can't be expensed in the current year. This increases the complexity of tax compliance and demands additional resources and training. Moreover, the rules leave open questions about what constitutes "maintenance activities" that don't give rise to upgrades and enhancements. Such ambiguities could lead to differing interpretations and increased litigation, further straining IRS resources. The significance there is that so-called “maintenance activities” that do not give rise to upgrades or enhancements are expensable in the current year–but your guess is as good as mine what kind of development work would meet that criteria? On some level, does not every new software release intend to upgrade or enhance the previous version?I suggest that either the post-TCJA changes must be rolled back or a more well-considered policy should be implemented. If not, there's a risk that these changes could stifle software innovation, particularly affecting startups and smaller companies that were previously incentivized to innovate.New IRS R&E Rules Risk Stifling Software Innovation for Startups Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

On this day in legal history, October 2, 1967he first African-American Supreme Court justice. On this day in legal history, October 2nd, we commemorate a monumental moment: the swearing-in of Thurgood Marshall as the first African-American justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1908, Marshall was the great-grandson of an enslaved person. He faced racial barriers early in his life, being rejected from the University of Maryland Law School due to his race. However, he found his place at Howard University, where he excelled and graduated first in his class in 1933.Marshall joined the NAACP's legal division in 1936 and quickly rose to prominence, succeeding his mentor Charles H. Houston as the organization's chief legal counsel in 1938. In this role, he argued more than a dozen cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, challenging racial segregation and winning nearly all of them. His most notable victory came in 1954 with the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education, which led to the abolishment of segregation in public facilities and served as a catalyst for the civil rights movement. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed Marshall to the U.S. Court of Appeals, although his confirmation faced opposition from Southern senators. He was finally confirmed in 1962. Three years later, President Lyndon Johnson appointed him as the U.S. Solicitor General. On June 13, 1967, Johnson nominated Marshall to the Supreme Court, declaring it was "the right thing to do, the right time to do it, the right man, and the right place." After a contentious Senate debate, Marshall was confirmed by a vote of 69 to 11 on August 30, 1967.Sworn in by Chief Justice Earl Warren, Marshall served on the Supreme Court for 24 years. During his tenure, he was a staunch advocate for civil rights, opposing discrimination based on race or sex, and vehemently defending affirmative action and the right to privacy. Although his liberal views increasingly found themselves in the minority due to shifts in the Court's ideology, Marshall's impact on American jurisprudence remains indelible. He retired in 1991 due to declining health and passed away in 1993, but his legacy as a trailblazer in the fight for equality endures. The U.S. Congress narrowly avoided a government shutdown by passing a compromise bill just hours before the midnight deadline. The legislation, which keeps the government funded until November 17, allows both Democrats and Republicans additional time to negotiate a longer-term federal budget. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law, emphasizing that the move prevented an unnecessary crisis affecting millions of Americans. The bill's passage was facilitated by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who defied threats from far-right Republicans to remove him from leadership if he didn't shut down the government. The bill was passed in an unusually quick manner, taking less than 12 hours to clear both chambers of Congress. The absence of deep spending cuts and border policies, often demanded by Republican hardliners, makes this legislation a rare instance of bipartisan agreement in a politically divided Washington. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer noted that the far-right Republicans gained nothing despite their threats. The legislation does not include new funding for Ukraine, which is seen as a setback for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Despite this, Biden and other lawmakers have reassured Ukraine of continued U.S. support. The U.S. has already sent $44 billion to Ukraine since the Russian invasion last year and has plans for an additional $24 billion. The bill was passed in the Senate with an 88-9 vote, following a strong vote in the House that included support from nearly all Democrats and more than half of the Republicans. The legislation also includes $16 billion in disaster relief funding. Lawmakers from both parties who support additional funding for Ukraine have stated that this will be handled separately. The passage of this bill has been closely watched by both Americans and global investors, as a shutdown could have had far-reaching economic implications. The U.S. Congress has a long-standing issue with passing spending bills on time, often resorting to temporary measures like continuing resolutions (CRs) to keep the government running. The current appropriations process, which was established in 1974, has rarely been followed as intended. In fact, Congress has only managed to pass all required appropriations measures on time four times since the system was put in place. The first step in the process is the budget resolution, which is supposed to be submitted by the President by the first Monday in February. However, Congress has frequently missed the April 15 target date set by the Congressional Budget Act, and the budget resolution has been late for 30 of the past 49 fiscal years.Increasingly, Congress has been using "deeming resolutions" as a substitute for budget resolutions, especially when the two chambers can't agree. These deeming resolutions often foreshadow future spending conflicts between the House and Senate. After the budget resolution, Congress is supposed to pass 12 separate appropriations bills, one for each pair of subcommittees on the appropriations committees of both chambers. The deadline for these bills is October 1, the start of the new fiscal year. However, Congress has not passed more than five of its 12 regular appropriations bills on time since 1996.Instead of individual spending bills, Congress often resorts to omnibus bills, which bundle several appropriations measures into a single law. These omnibus bills have become increasingly common in the past two decades. The appropriations process only covers about 27.2% of all federal spending, with the majority being mandatory spending on programs like Social Security and Medicare. Government shutdowns, although disruptive, have been relatively rare but are becoming more frequent. The impact of a shutdown varies depending on its duration and which government functions are affected. In sum, the struggle to pass spending bills on time is a chronic issue rooted in procedural inefficiencies, political disagreements, and the complexity of federal spending. This often leads to temporary fixes that do not address the underlying issues, thereby perpetuating the cycle of late appropriations and potential government shutdowns.Congress Averts US Government Shutdown Hours Before Deadline (1)The Biden administration has updated the national efficiency standards for residential gas furnaces, affecting about a third of all U.S. homes. The new rule mandates a 95% annual fuel utilization efficiency standard, up from the current 80%, effectively phasing out older, less efficient models by late 2028. The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that the new standard will save consumers approximately $57 annually on utility bills, amounting to $24.8 billion in cumulative savings over 30 years. Additionally, the rule is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 332 million metric tons and cut methane emissions by 4.3 million tons over the same period. The rule was finalized as part of a court settlement with environmental groups and is likely to be welcomed by energy efficiency advocates but criticized by natural gas utilities and business groups. These groups argue that the new standards could increase costs for consumers who would need to upgrade their venting systems. However, a coalition of nine electric and gas utilities supports the rule, suggesting mechanisms to assist lower-income customers with upfront costs. The DOE defended the rule, stating that it has the legal authority to update the standard and that the industry has room for innovation to meet the new requirements. Compliance will be effective five years from the rule's publication in the Federal Register, which has yet to occur. The rule is part of the Biden administration's broader effort to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.Gas Furnaces Face 95% Efficiency Standard With Final DOE RuleSquire Patton Boggs, a law firm founded in Cleveland, has expanded its international presence by opening an office in Beirut. The new office aims to assist clients with international disputes, policy, and other commercial matters, according to the firm's CEO, Mark Ruehlmann. The firm has also recently added key personnel in the Middle East, including a mergers and acquisitions partner from Baker McKenzie and a financial services partner who previously led the financial markets practice at Jones Day in Dubai. This expansion comes after the firm announced a cooperation agreement with the Law Office of Looaye M. Al-Akkas in Saudi Arabia earlier this year.Squire Patton Boggs Expands in Middle East With Beirut OfficeFormer U.S. President Donald Trump is set to appear in a New York court for the beginning of a civil fraud trial. The case, brought by New York State Attorney General Letitia James, accuses Trump and his family business of fraudulently inflating the value of properties and other assets. Trump has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them a "sham" and criticizing both the judge and the Attorney General. James is seeking at least $250 million in penalties and various bans on Trump and his sons from conducting business in New York. The civil case is separate from the four criminal indictments that Trump currently faces.Donald Trump to appear in New York court for civil fraud trial | ReutersHunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, is facing indictment on firearms-related charges, including unlawfully possessing a gun as an illegal drug user and lying about his drug use on a background check form. Interestingly, a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the case of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen may aid his defense. This ruling set a new standard for judging the legality of gun restrictions, stating that they must align with the U.S. "historical tradition of firearm regulation." Hunter Biden's defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, has hinted at challenging the indictment based on this ruling.Legal experts suggest that Hunter Biden is likely to argue that the federal law banning illegal drug users from owning guns has no historical basis and violates his Second Amendment rights. This case has the potential to scramble the usual political dynamics, as Democrats typically favor gun restrictions while Republicans oppose them. The Bruen ruling has already led to a U.S. appeals court concluding that the drug-related statute in Biden's case may be unconstitutional in some circumstances.Federal prosecutors are expected to counter by citing 19th-century restrictions and laws that disarm groups considered dangerous as historical grounding for the charge against Hunter Biden. The case also brings attention to the uncertainty created by the Bruen decision regarding which gun laws may or may not be constitutional. Even if the possession charge against Hunter Biden is dismissed, he still faces two counts of making false statements on the background check form, which may be more challenging to contest. The Supreme Court is set to rule again on gun regulation in a Texas case, and that decision could further influence Hunter Biden's case.US Supreme Court ruling may help Hunter Biden fight gun charge | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

House Republicans launched a formal impeachment hearing Thursday against President Joe Biden, promising to “provide accountability” as they probe the family finances and lucrative business dealings of his son Hunter and make their case to the public, colleagues and a skeptical Senate. The chairmen of the Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees used the opening hearing to review the constitutional and legal questions involved with impeachment. They are trying to show what they say are links to Biden's son Hunter's overseas businesses, though key witnesses said they do not yet see hard evidence of impeachable offenses. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky, the Oversight chairman, said the lawmakers have “a mountain of evidence” that will show that the elder Biden “abused his public office for his family's financial gain.” Hours after the hearing wrapped, Comer issued subpoenas for additional banking records from the personal and business accounts of Hunter Biden and the president's brother, James Biden. He said the panel will continue to “follow the money and the evidence to provide accountability.” It's a high-stakes opening act for Republicans, taking place just before a potential federal government shutdown, as they begin a process that can lead to the ultimate penalty for a president, dismissal from office for what the Constitution describes as “high crimes and misdemeanors.” The White House pushed back with statements throughout the hearing saying nothing can distract from the Republicans' inability to govern as the shutdown loomed. Spokesperson Sharon Yang called the hearing a “baseless stunt” and said, “President Biden will always stay focused on the priorities of the American people — not these political games.” The more than six-hour hearing came as House Republicans face scattered resistance to an impeachment inquiry from their own ranks and deep reluctance in the Senate from Republicans who worry about political ramifications and say Biden's conviction and removal from office are unlikely. As the hearing began, Democrats displayed a screen showing the days, hours and minutes left until the government shuts down as Congress struggles to fund the government before Saturday's deadline. “We're 62 hours away from shutting down the government of the United States of America and Republicans are launching an impeachment drive, based on a long debunked and discredited lie,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the Oversight panel. Raskin questioned the legitimacy of the hearing since the House has not voted to formally launch the impeachment inquiry. He said Republicans are rehashing five-year-old allegations raised by Donald Trump, who is Biden's chief rival in 2024, during the former president's 2019 impeachment over Ukraine. “They don't have a shred of evidence against President Biden for an impeachable offense,” he said. The hearing Thursday did not feature witnesses with information about the Bidens or Hunter Biden's business. Instead, the panel heard from outside experts in tax law, criminal investigations and constitutional legal theory. A top Republican-called witness, Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor who is an expert in impeachment issues, said he believed the House had passed the threshold for an inquiry but the current evidence was not enough for charges. “I do not believe that the current evidence would support articles of impeachment,” Turley said. Democrats, who decry the investigation as a political ploy aimed at hurting Biden and helping Trump as he runs again for president, brought in Michael Gerhardt, a law professor who has also appeared as an expert in previous impeachment proceedings. In detailing the reasons Republicans say they have to impeach Biden, Gerhardt concluded: “If that's what exists, as a basis for this inquiry, it is not sufficient. I say that with all respect.” Still, questions remain as Republicans dig into the Biden family finances and the overseas business dealings of Hunter Biden, who has acknowledged being a drug user during much of the time under scrutiny. The president's brother, James, was also involved in some work with Hunter. Republicans have been investigating Hunter Biden for years, since his father was vice president. And while there have been questions raised about the ethics around the family's international business, none of the evidence so far has proven that the president, in his current or previous office, abused his role, accepted bribes or both. One former business partner of Hunter Biden has told House investigators the son was selling the “illusion of access” to his father. Turley told the lawmakers the question remains, “Was the president involved?” In the run-up to the hearing, Republicans unveiled a tranche of new documents and bank records that detail wire transfers from a Chinese businessman to Hunter Biden in 2019. Hunter Biden had listed his father's address on the wire transfer form, which Republicans say provided a clear link to the president. Abbe Lowell, an attorney for Hunter Biden, said the address on the wire transfer, which he says was a loan, was listed to the president's Delaware home because it was the address on Hunter Biden's driver's license and "his only permanent address at the time.” “Once again Rep. Comer peddles lies to support a premise — some wrongdoing by Hunter Biden or his family — that evaporates in thin air the moment facts come out,” Lowell said in a statement. House Republicans are also looking into the Justice Department investigation into Hunter Biden's taxes and gun use that began in 2018. Two IRS whistleblowers came forward to Congress in the spring with claims that department officials thwarted their efforts to fully investigate Hunter Biden and that they faced retaliation when they pushed back. The claims have since been disputed by the Department of Justice, the IRS and FBI agents who worked on the case. “The Biden Justice Department protected the Biden family brand.” said Rep. Jason Smith, a Missouri Republican and Ways and Means chairman. What Smith did not mention was that the discussions occurred during the Trump Justice Department and were likely in keeping with the agency's practice of avoiding overt investigative steps concerning political candidates in the immediate run-up to an election. But Republicans have pointed to a failed plea deal over the summer as proof that Hunter Biden received preferential treatment because of who his father was. “They tried to put together this sweetheart deal,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, the Judiciary chairman. The impeachment inquiry hearing is taking place as the federal government is days away from what is likely to be a damaging government shutdown that would halt paychecks for millions of federal workers and the military and disrupt services for millions of Americans. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced the impeachment inquiry this month, egged on by Trump and with mounting pressure from his right flank to take action against Biden or risk being ousted from his leadership job. Trump is the only president to be twice impeached, first over accusations he pressured Ukraine to dig up dirt on Biden and later over accusations that he incited the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol. He was acquitted in both cases by the Senate. The hearing Thursday is expected to be the first of many as House Republicans explore whether or not they will pursue articles of impeachment against the president. It's unclear if McCarthy has support from his slim Republican majority to impeach Biden. If Biden was impeached, the charges would then be sent to the Senate for a trial. - by Farnoush Amiri, Lisa Mascaro and Eric Tucker, APSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Biden's attorney Abbe Lowell accused John Paul Mac Isaac, several Trump advisors, and Senator Rob Johnson of unlawfully accessing personal information on Biden's surrendered laptop. Lowell has requested a criminal probe into the dissemination of information from the laptop.  3:10pm- According to The Wall Street Journal, the FBI is expected to search the Indiana home of former Vice President Mike Pence.  3:25pm- When the Hunter laptop was initially uncovered prior to the 2020 Presidential Election, members of the media, as well as then-candidate Joe Biden repeatedly dismissed the laptop as Russian disinformation. Will anyone be held accountable for their politically motivated dismissal? 3:45pm- Despite dismissing the laptop abandoned at a Delaware electronics repair shop as Russian disinformation for over two-years, Hunter Biden now admits it belongs to him—but why? CNN's Dana Bash said she suspects it has something to do with Republicans now controlling the House of Representatives and their vow to investigate Hunter's foreign business dealings. 3:50pm- House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) spoke with the National Archives on Tuesday. Rep. Comer claimed the National Archives told him they have no problem with complete transparency regarding President Biden's mishandling of classified documents—leading Comer to conclude the lack of cooperation and openness is due to Merrick Garland's Department of Justice. When asked about the accusations, both White House Council Ian Sams and White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre refused to provide clarity.  4:05pm- On Thursday, Congressional Republicans voted to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Cori Bush (D-MO), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) took to the House floor to condemn the GOP's decision—claiming it had nothing to do with Rep. Science.org and Bloomberg have both written articles about the concern.  5:25pm- Watergate journalist Bob Woodward revealed that in 2017, he attempted to warn reporters at The Washington Post that the “Steele dossier” was illegitimate—even calling it a “garbage document.” However, his warnings were dismissed, and the newspaper continued to treat it as a genuine source of information.  5:45pm- Former Philadelphia City Councilmember and current Mayoral candidate Helen Gym apologized for attending an event at the Union League one week after the club honored Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.  6:00pm- During a House Rules Committee hearing, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) asked Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) if she was a Socialist—reading past statements Waters has made that endorsed socialist policies.  6:10pm- According to a report from Fox News, Rep. Maxine Waters' campaign paid Waters' daughter an estimated $192,000 for running their “slate mailer” operation from 2021 to 2022. Joe Schoffstall writes: “Waters received the green light to run the operation from the Federal Election Commission in the fall of 2004. Since then, Karen Waters has received more than $1.2 million in payments from her mother's campaign.” 6:30pm- On Thursday, Congressional Republicans voted to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. While passing the resolution to formally remove Rep.
