This episode begins our series on "What you may have missed at ATS 2025."We produce over 450 million tons of plastics each year, the vast majority of which has accumulated in the environment. Increasing evidence suggests that microplastics can accumulate in a number of different organs such as the brain, but what of the lungs? In this episode, Adam Soloff, PhD (self-described "Lorax of the Thorax"), associate professor, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, walks us through his research to find out what these ever-present microplastics do to the lungs and the pulmonary immune system in particular. Spoiler alert: once inhaled, microplastics pass through the lung seeding many tissues of the body including the heart, brain, gut, liver, and spleen. "We found it everywhere we looked," said Dr. Soloff whose team's work begins to shed light on how microplastics damage lung immunity and may predispose us to lung disease in the future.4:16 What is a microplastic?6:19 Where is the most established evidence of how microplastics affects our health?
Happy Klassenkampf!

Today's podcast features Chris Kelly, the owner of Fitness Rehab and The Musical Athlete. He has extensive education in biomechanics and human performance systems. Chris balances health and performance while teaching clients to understand their bodies and manage movement efficiently. As a teacher, he has trained hundreds of professionals in topics like breathing mechanics, movement assessment, and exercise application. Many training conversations relate to what happens from the ground upwards, but not often do we discuss what occurs from the head, downwards in athletic movement. What happens at the level of the head, is also a mirror for what is happening in the chest, and hips, so knowing this area helps paint a greater picture of the total athlete. On today's podcast, Chris covers aspects of airway, head, and neck as they pertain to sprinting and human movement, along with compensatory strategies that can power movement under conditions of fatigue. He also talks about the nature of reciprocal movement in force absorption, oscillatory training principles, and air-pressure-based principles of movement and performance. This show offers a unique and helpful lens by which to greater understand the big picture of athleticism and training methodology. Thorax is going to start to face the ground. And in the case of a narrow, like a Quincy Hall or something like that, you also see maybe a suboccipital strategy where the head goes forward and you start to get a cranium that actually starts to face the ground as well” (19:25) “When we have a calcaneus that hits the ground and begins to evert before the whole foot dumps in, that creates a slight delay that allows for the propagation of energy through a distribution of energy through more, you know, through more joint systems” (21:03) "When I talk about delay strategies, I want to see that I can delay the absorption of energy. So, number one, I can do it at all and I can control what's happening to me. And number two, I can then utilize that energy in a way that is going to be purposeful and a skilled task as opposed to just having to refrigerator turn my whole body." - Chris Kelly (22:00) “(Messi) has very good control and It's very easy for him to, you know, to move in that way and maintain relative motions, whereas, like, you know, somebody that's a force producer like me or, you know, heavy weightlifter or something… I'm a fullback. Like, I'm going to knock you over. I'm going to outrun you” (37:00) “We were talking about things that were more expansive in nature, like finding a heel or reaching, this is training more yielding properties of the connective tissue versus your Weck deadlift or your, you know, your activities where maybe your heel is off the ground or something.
In this episode, we explore the surprising journey of a boxer battling chronic shoulder pain that left him struggling to do even the most basic workout. Despite focusing on his shoulder, it turns out the root of his problem lay elsewhere—his elbow. Is that surprising? It was in his injury history. Do not discount the power of an old injury that could come back and haunt you. And think about the load on the elbow when you're doing a push or pull-up. Join us as we clinically reason through this interesting case from start to finish. In this episode, Erica dives into the intriguing story of a former fighter who faced unexpected challenges with basic exercises like push-ups and pull-ups. She sheds light on how years of specialized training led to muscle imbalances and problems outside the ring. The "push" and "pull" are different movement patterns. What region(s) of the body are challenged with these movements? Remember the "push" is a 4-point closed chain movement and the "pull" is not. What do fighters do on a routine basis to their wrists before a fight? Why is the "negative" on a pull-up more important than the push on a push-up? Listen in as Erica discusses how to make this type of assessment more efficient by really listening to the story, connecting the dots, and ultimately going back to basics to treat another region of the body that was a secondary driver to the "pull". In this episode, Susan and Erica discuss the many ways the thorax can be the driver for a multitude of upper and lower extremity issues. This important region of the body tends to cause a lot of movement dysfunction we often see. As an example, the thorax is an important component in driving foot pain as well as issues in the pelvic girdle. Suppose you can get the thorax to move differently. In that case, this can help people down-train old movement patterns that do not serve them and ultimately restore global movement patterning across many tasks. Key point: The thorax can be a key driver, in how someone transfers load after an injury (no matter when that injury took place). It is a region of the body that compensates for pain and dysfunction elsewhere and then ends up being the driver years later. Don't miss it. It's our first podcast of 2023! And we're so happy to discover that this strip still makes no goddamned sense at all. We begin our twelve-strip journey (yes! twelve!) with a customer service rep responding to texts from what turns out to be Thorax. Thorax is looking for overalls in XXXXL-Tall, so naturally his path to purchasing said clothing begins with texting a customer service person. And once he finds out it's a lady -- with the doubly unlikely name of Verity Dupee -- Thorax begins his harrassment. We're sorry, we totally mean romance. Romance as defined by Brooke McEldowney. Verity seems totally annoyed wiht Thorax. Who wouldn't be? But in the end she quits her job and travels to New Hampshire to hand deliver the overalls to Thorax, because she's in love with him. Right up until he tells her he's from another planet. The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: Thorax's romance/stalking of Verity Dupee begins right here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1617542019781636101?s=20&t=u4XUHZf4HgYJi0ppU09AEA). Verity is ready to get it on with Thorax but he ruins it by saying he's from another planet right here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1617542029164318720?s=20&t=u4XUHZf4HgYJi0ppU09AEA). Your patient has a dysfunctional thorax and it's driving their symptoms, wherever they are. How can you clinically reason treating a non-painful thorax for distal symptoms, such as the foot and hip? The body translates the head, thorax, and the pelvis over the feet for many reasons. Offloading a painful foot, knee, hip is one reason, the other can be an ingrained movement pattern that has been there for years because of an old injury or from a dominant movement or sport history. Join Susan and Erica as they discuss thoracic drivers and how they can relate to hip and foot dysfunction. They discuss patterns of non-optimal movement in the thorax and how you would progress exercise appropriately in these patients. Foolishly, I suppose, we thought FOR SURE Brooke McEldowney would make some reference to Halloween in his strip over the years. At the very least, we were expecting the female characters to be dressed as sexy somethings -- painters? pilots? poop emojis? -- but McEldowney gave us nothing. So we soldiered on and explored a half dozen or so strips that ran on Halloween. Edda writes an incomprehensible sentence on the chalkboard. Thorax either milks a cow or breaks up with it. Both seem equally possible. Edda finds some confidence only to have a friend tell her to "drop dead." A former nun (Diane) and Catholic priest (Francis) get married, which fogs up another nun's glasses. Thorax becomes "shadow president" and for some reason a chicken reads three teleprompters that all say "cluck." Amos & Edda's relationship is tested when Amos accidentally kisses Xiulan, a fellow cellist who is also a pilot, because of course she is. Finally, Edda does a solo ballet dance that's interrupted by a dog putting his nose in her butt. Mostly, we end up spending a lot of time at an insufferable dinner party with Brooke McEldowney. The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: The vexing chalkboard, magnificent cow, and Drop Dead Janice are here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1583844780823322626?s=20&t=kuoU5Slu_SoVFwnXWhY_tQ). So there's this whole string of strips where people send off, basically, angry "letters to the editor." Only in this case, it's people or entities that our beloved (?) Chickweed residents have had enough of. Juliette gets mad at the health care system and as a result shoots her computer full of arrows. Someone gets an "unsolicited letter" and throws their computer out of the window. Or the person sending the "unsolicited letter" throws the computer out the window. Or an unrelated person throws a computer out a window. Guys, it's not clear what's going on AT ALL in one of these comic strips. Amos shows what a super cool guy he is by showing he'd rather barf on his own computer than talk to children about what it's like to play in an orchestra. Thorax licks his computer. Why? Seriously? Why does anyone in this strip do ANYTHING? Juliette's husband moons his computer. And finally, Amos & Edda make out near their computer. The letters (and the reasons behind writing them) don't ever really make sense. We hate to be the ones to break this to Brooke McEldowney, but things that you do in front of your computer or to your computer aren't automatically conveyed through your computer to the recipient, at least not when you're typing. Anyway, one of these strips makes us so angry we can barely contain ourselves. All in all, totally worth it! The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: The computer shot with arrows and the computer thrown out the window are here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1582064941686628352?s=20&t=9__snYNajdnQu66iG2465A). In this episode, Susan and Erica discuss a young squash player with long-standing low back pain. They highlight the importance of injury and movement history. What do we know of squash players? What regions of the body are stressed in this sport? Look at different movement patterns to tease out the driver. How can you apply your clinical reasoning using a timeline of his injury history coupled with the dominant movement patterning inherent in that sport to figure out where his drivers lie? Hint: there was more than one area. Not surprising-this is very common. They also discuss a sound exercise progression giving listeners options for changing context and load. Enjoy!
In the final part of this three-part horror-fest, we explore the romance (???) of Thorax and Esme. It's been an epic story arc. We recap our journey so far. And eventually end up walking into the ocean along with our May-December (of the following year) couple. Along the way, we awkwardly use the phrase "booty call," investigate Thorax's "bad touch" area, are mystified by hats, welcome a suddenly homicidal E.T. to our podcast, and watch Thorax finally clue into the fact that Esme likes him, which sends him (literally?) over the moon. If only it really happened. We also have to suffer through more of Brooke McEldowney's annoyingly florid dialog. Of course we do, because when don't we? It's fun to discover the new ways that Esme shows her love this episode, which includes romantic gunplay and farting. (One caveat, we're not tech geniuses. And as we've recorded this podcast, we've had some glitches to deal with. Please bear with us for the occasional audio weirdness. We promise that they clear up. Eventually. Thanks!) Noooooo. Nooooooo. It's not fun. This show's no fun at all. Absolutely revolting. Positively heinous. We're not here to entertain you or make you laugh. Noooooo. Noooooo. Not at all. But I will tell you that we decided to watch the new DC The Sandman show. So maybe we'll talk about that in a bit. Maybe. I mean it's possible that what we talk about is what we'll talk about. So you know. There it is. Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/iamtherealbrian In This Episode We're on YouTube! PLEASE SUBSCRIBE!!
