20 Feb 23 – Morality

Today's Topics: 1) The definition of Morality is the set of principles a person develops, concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.  For Catholics, it is living a virtuous life. Throughout the show Greg and Mark speak about the death of their San Gabriel Regional Bishop David O'Connell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DubZMoOJXAo 2) Sadly, because of the Fall, we also suffer the impact of Original Sin, which darkens our minds, weakens our wills, and inclines us to sin. Baptism delivers us from Original Sin but not from its effects— especially the inclination to sin, concupiscence, 3) Deuteronomy 30:15-16 proclaims, "See, I have today set before you life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I am giving you today, loving the LORD, your God, and walking in his ways, and keeping his commandments, statutes and ordinances, you will live and grow numerous, and the LORD, your God, will bless you in the land you are entering to possess." 4) An important foundation of Christian morality is the understanding of moral acts. Every moral act consists of three elements: the objective act (what we do), the subjective goal or intention (why we do the act), and the concrete situation or circumstances in which we perform the act (where, when, how, with whom, the consequences, etc.). Today's Topics: 1) Greg gives a history of the origins of New Year Resolutions from the ancient Babylonians through the time of Rome under Julius Caesar, to today 2) As Catholic men we should resolve to make prayer central to our daily activities; "Ora et Labora," "Pray and Labor," starting each activity in the name of God. Greg and Mark spoke about how each prays the daily rosary with their respective groups and how that has impacted their spiritual lives. Another resolution is to read the lives of the Saints daily to provide us examples of leading good Catholic lives 3) We must resolve to: go to the Sacrament of Confession on a regular basis; conduct a daily examination of conscience in the evening to help us discover what we have done well and what we need to improve on; make regular visits to the blessed sacrament where we can listen to what God is directing us to do 4) We should resolve to increase our fasting, sacrifice, and Mass attendance. By fasting, we learn to control our base instincts which when in control allows us to focus more clearly on Christ. In sacrificing we imitate Christ in an effort to become more like him and assist those in need. In regular Mass attendance, which we are required to do, we witness the greatest example of sacrifice that the world has ever known. In shifting gears to the Knights of Columbus Council level Brothers should resolve to invite men to join the Order, to become more active and in doing so evangelize themselves, their families, and their communities Theme: "Salve Regina" performed by Floriani. She desires that he go to the Bishop, Juan de Zumarraga, to ask that he build a chapel in honor of her Son, Jesus Christ, "so that she might show the infinite majesty of God to all the children of the Americas," 2) The story continues with Juan Diego following Our Lady's request to appeal to the Bishop. After much effort, he meets the Bishop, who respectfully listens to his story. However, Juan Diego is sent away. Our Lady appears to Juan Diego a second time and tells him to ask Bishop Zumarraga again. The Bishop asks that Juan receive a sign from the Lady. Our Lady provides Juan Diego with a sign, miraculous roses, to deliver to the Bishop, 3) The miraculous sign was not the roses, it was an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that appeared on Juan Diego's tilma as he presented the roses to Bishop Zumarraga. Greg and Mark detail the intricate secrets contained within the image 4) Continuing to discuss the symbolism of the image they recount how the sash indicates that she is with child. Our Lady told Saint Dominic, that every time someone says the "Hail Mary" they give her a rose but when they recite a full Rosary, "they give her a crown of roses," 2) In the second segment, the reasons for praying the Holy Rosary are discussed. If we are to focus on God, what better way than to meditate on his life here on Earth, which we do through the recitation of the Holy Rosary. Saint Dominic was successful in combating the Albigensian heresy through a devotion to the Rosary, we too should devote our lives to praying the Holy Rosary to combat the modern heresies and obtain the graces for ourselves and for all sinners, 3) There are two recognized origin stories for the Holy Rosary. The first was handed to Saint Dominic from the Virgin Mary and the second is an evolution of the efforts of the uneducated in praying the Breviary, where they prayed their Pater Nosters and Ave Marias in lieu of learning and reciting the Psalms, 4) In the final segment, the Promises of the Rosary, as told by the Virgin Mary to Saint Dominic, are discussed. The Catholic Spanish Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella also have a devotion to Our Lady and through her intercession are able to unite Spain under a single rule, 3) Columbus makes his voyage to the New World thanks to the intercession and under the patronage of The Virgin Mary. There are many instances of his Marian devotion during the initial voyage.  It started on the feast of Our Lady of the Angels (Aug. 2), sighting land and debarking the ship on the feast of Our Lady of the Pillar (Oct. 12) and the Celebration of the first Mass in the New World on the feast of the Immaculate Conception (Dec. 8), 4) Mary is the intercessor for all Catholics but particularly for the Evangelists.  She is a powerful intercessor for the Knights of Columbus who are under her Patronage through Our Lady of Guadalupe. From Saint Ambrose: Do not desert a friend in time of need, nor forsake him nor fail him, for friendship is the support of life. If friends in prosperity help friends, why do they not also in times of adversity offer their support? There is your brother, naked, crying, and you stand there confused over the choice of an attractive floor covering. It is a better thing to save souls for the Lord than to save treasures. Theme: "Salve Regina" performed by Floriani. All rights reserved. Used with permission. 25 Jul 22 – Precepts of the Catholic Church (Pt. 2)

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2022 51:04

Today's Topics: 1)  Greg and Mark give a recap of the last week's episode, which discussed the first three Precepts of the Catholic Church:  1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of obligation.  2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year.  3. You shall receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter Season, 2)  The Fourth Precept:  You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. Saint Augustine stated that "fasting cleanses the soul."  Saint Basil said that "penance without fasting is useless and vain, by fasting we satisfy God," 3) The Fifth Precept:  You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church.  The discussion of tithing versus almsgiving demonstrated that tithing is giving what is due and almsgiving is going above and beyond what is due, 4) This segment discussed how the Knights of Columbus and their Faith in Action Programs assist men and thus their families in following the Precepts of the Catholic Church.  For more information go to https://www.kofc.org/en/what-we-do/faith-in-action-programs/index.html In Southern California, there will be a Family Picnic on August 13, 2022, for more information go to santiagoretreatcenter.org/kofcpicnic or call Mark Padilla (323)742-2990. 18 Jul 22 – Precepts of the Catholic Church

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 18, 2022 51:07

Today's Topics: 1) This episode focuses on the Precepts of the Catholic Church, why we need to follow them, and how we should also go the extra mile to become Saints.  Speaking of miles, Mark and Greg reflect on the last couple of weeks, which were extremely busy for the Knights as we close out the Columbian year and start a new one, 2) The first precept of the Catholic Church is attendance at Mass each Sunday and every Holy Day of Obligation. While this is the minimum requirement, we should all strive to attend Mass as frequently as possible. Daily prayer and reading the Gospel of the day, should be another goal for every Catholic as we continue growing in our Faith, 3) In this segment, the focus is on the second precept, you shall confess your sins at least once a year.  This is essential to prepare ourselves for the reception of Holy Communion.  Men, in particular, should hold each other to account, in a charitable manner. We should "love one another" enough to help each other stay on the path to sainthood, 4) The third precept, Reception of the Holy Eucharist at least once a year during the Easter Season, is at the center of the Catholic Faith.  The Real Presence is at the heart of our Faith and therefore reception of the Holy Eucharist should be paramount to the faithful but should be desired as often as possible.  The last two precepts will be covered in the next episode.
