In May of 1984 Tina Turner released her 5th studio album. After being dropped from United five years earlier due to the poor reception of her album Love Explosion, A&R rep John Carter of Capitol Records spearheaded Tina's comeback. Setting her R&B pedigree aside, the album tracks gracefully maneuver between uptempo pop, full on ballads, and smatterings of jazz and soul. The results? Seven singles, 5x platinum sales stateside, four Grammy Awards including Record of The Year, Best Female Pop Performance & Best Female Rock Performance, and the career resurrection of one of the finest performers to ever grace a stage. Let's talk Tina Turner, Private Dancer!

For decades people have debated over who had the best crossover. While Allen Iverson's NBA crossover may have been lethal, it was nothing compared to Tina Turner's iconic crossover into the pop mainstream. After years in partnership with an abusive and overbearing Ike Turner, Tina stepped out on her own to find her own voice. And boy, did she ever. Ike could only sit back and watch Tina step right over him as she created some of the most monstrous hits of the 1980's. And like Tyronn Lue, Ike never saw it coming. And we're still talking about it to this day.

If you listen to some people you'd be forgiven for thinking that their should be no such thing as a guilty pleasure - if you like something, you fucking like it, and there should be no shame in that. I sort of agree with that in a way, but erm, y'know, bollocks. Total bollocks. We change who we are all the time, we develop, we grow, we learn, and just as videos of me awkwardly learning to ski would be embarrassing to watch, listening back to some of the cack I used to listen to when I was younger is also embarrassing. I don't hate much of it, in retrospect, honestly. In fact, a lot it I still love, with a definite sense of 'I refuse to be shamed' defiance. But just as every crappy, badly executed relationship, mumbled chat-up line and embarrassing sexual encounter was necessary in order to for me to end up where I am with Mrs. Toad, so every musical misstep, be it daft, excruciating or misguided has led me to where I am musically. So I don't really regret any of this stuff (except The Streets), and even in retrospect I don't really dislike it either, but that doesn't mean there isn't a slight sense of shame at a younger, less confident, more impressionable me. Having said that, though, I think having plenty of shame in your musical background is probably a healthy thing. It seems to me to imply that you were taking risks, listening to new stuff, trying things out and having your own opinions. The results may occasionally be embarrassing in retrospect, but the approach which got you there is probably more healthy than never trying out new shit and only listening to stuff you know you're going to like. 01. Erm, really sorry that this is so very, very late, but life rather caught up with me this week. So I never quite managed to find time to get my shit together until this evening, unfortunately. It's surprising how much of my time these weekly podcasts seem to take up - it can be quite hard to find an evening every single week to record these things. What I find amazing is that I don't run out of blather. I don't recall ever saying anything profound or all that intelligent either, so this little collection must represent hours and hours of inconsequential rambling. On Friday a nice young lady in the pub asked me "Has anyone ever told you that you talk loads and loads." I suppose, looking back at a hundred and some podcasts the miracle is that actually the answer to that question is 'no, not really, not that I can remember'. Oh, and yes, that is Tina Turner and Kim Carnes you see there. Suck it up, hipsters. Toadcast #107 - The Tardicast 01. The Walkmen - This Job is Killing Me (03.30) 02.
