Economic status is a major consideration in both world building and characterisation, and that's before you consider the fact that SFF is often concerned with confronting the reader with real world problems disguised as speculative fiction. This week, the dragons take a look at wealth versus poverty when it comes to creating a world and developing characters. From Terry Pratchett's Vimes' Economy of Boots to Trudi Canavan's Black Magician - where the being able to afford access to your own magic is a sign of wealth and status - to the difference between being a Malfoy and a Weasley at wizarding school, Jules and Madeleine have got you covered. A trope which has seen a rise in popularity lately - whether in romance, urban fantasy, sci-fi or a number of other genres and sub genres - is that of 'enemies to lovers'. Two people start out at odds: either they hate each for a variety of reasons or they're on opposing sides in a conflict. Events conspire to throw them together and a romantic plot or sub plot happens, fuelled by its very unlikeliness it seems. This week the dragons take a look at why this trope is so popular, delving into development of conflict and character arc as well as common 'way stations' the trope needs to hit in order to work successfully. They also take a look at a few examples where it doesn't work and why. Under the microscope this week: The Black Magician series by Trudi Canavan, Opal Cohen Series by Maria V Snyder, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and many more. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic

Many thanks to the delightful Ashleigh for commissioning the start of the next book by Trudi Canavan! This book takes place way back, far far before the timelines in the original Black Magician Trilogy, before the Guild was ever even formed. It's curious to see how unstructured things were and how little was understood about magic at this time, and the idea that Tessia would have to give up her pursuit of becoming a healer simply because she has magic seems so silly now that we know it becomes on of the major disciplines at the school. However, there are some really problematic elements to this story that I can't ignore, and I am just really hoping the book goes on to prove me wrong about those first impressions. We shall see!Thank you all so much for listening, and I will see you again soon with a new episode!
Greetings, fine people! Huge thanks to Ben for commissioning this episode covering The Novice, which is a follow-up to The Magicians' Guild by Trudi Canavan. I was hoping that I wasn't done reading about that world, and it looks like Fergun being gone isn't going to make things that much easier for Sonea in the end. Sonea has existed in a subsection of society that knows all too well how little money actually has to do with being a good or decent person, and I think it's a bit of a shock how horrible people her own age (or pretty close to it) can be about something like that. She's bullied almost immediately by a little shit named Regin, and there are plenty of adults muttering to themselves well within her hearing, too. I'm worried about her. I know that she's more mature and has more self-control than many people, but she's a strong magician and I can't help but wonder if they're trying to provoke her into doing something to incriminate herself. Keep a cool head, Sonea. Thanks again to Ben, and find the book here if you want to read along! https://amzn.to/2FpVh8DSee you soon with a new episode.
Good morning you lovely people! I'm happy to be back to covering Six Of Crows by Trudi Canavan because we were SO CLOSE to the location of the heist and I was withering away wondering what happened next. After all, we were barely halfway through the book! There's so much more story left! These chapters are really engrossing because not only do we get to see the scheme to get into the prison/fort/grand estate, but we also finally get to discover what exactly happened to Kaz and his brother after they were swindled. Not only that, we learn what causes him to be repulsed by the feel of another person's skin against his, and it's pretty fucking tragic. Similarly, we get more backstory on what went down between Nina and Matthias, and there's a lot of common ground between the way that they think and view the world, so it starts to make more sense why they're so drawn to one another. While she really liked Matthias, when it came right down to it she was more worried about revealing the people on her side than she was about getting him out of prison, and he's hugely resentful of her because he was THISCLOSE to betraying everything he thought he believed in on her behalf. This book is real goo, y'all.
This is the final episode covering The Magicians' Guild by Trudi Canavan, and I'm so delighted with the whole general vibe of this book and how it turned out, I can't even tell you. Thank you so much to Ashleigh for commissioning practically the whole thing! Fergun doesn't exactly get his comeuppance in this book like I had hoped, but to be honest I had expected things to turn out even worse than they did so in comparison to my worst fears (that he wound wind up as guardian of Sonea), this is pretty damn peachy. He gets found out to be the lying, egotistical shit-bag that he is, and Lord Rothen's eyes are finally opened to something that Dannyl has been trying to get him to see almost the entire book. Also, Sonea keeps impressing me with her level-headedness, and I'm just so glad that she has the presence of mind in a few different instances to look at things from both sides and understand what's really going on. Sonea is da MVP as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for listening, everyone, and I hope I will get to see you all soon with the next book!
Welcome to the first episode of my coverage of The Magicians' Guild by Trudi Canavan, brought to you by Ashleigh Dunleavy! If you'd like to grab a copy and read along, you can pick up a copy here: https://amzn.to/2MYKHsWThese first chapters establish a world where Magicians are part of an elite class of people, despite the fact that magic can surface in any class of person; unless you have the money for tutors and a magic-focused education, you're not going to be admitted to the Guild. In the cases when someone with magic is not deemed worthy, the Guild binds and suppresses that person's magic and then dumps them back out into the world. Sonea is a lower-class girl who suddenly finds herself exhibiting powers she didn't know she had, and since the Guild sets someone on fire because they suspect he did the magic, it's quite understandable that she decides to hide. Not all the Magicians are terrible people, but they sure don't trouble themselves to make nice with the public, and Sonea pretty much believes them all to be monsters. Girl, I get it. Thanks so much for listening, and thanks again to Ashleigh for starting me on this series!
