According to Mark C. Healey, Jesse Winker may be close to a deal with the Cincinnati Reds. That's certainly not the oddest thing that Reds fans have heard this offseason, and to a certain extent, reuniting with Winker would actually make a lot of sense. After two down years with the Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers, Winker resurrected his career in 2024 with stops in Washington and New York. Winker began the 2024 season with the Washington Nationals and hit .257/.374/.419 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI. The former first-round pick was then dealt to the New York Mets at the MLB trade deadline and put up a .243/.318/.365 slash line in Queens. Combined, Winker posted a .764 OPS last season and was 7-for-24 with three extra-base hits during his postseason run with the Mets. Reds Free Agency: Jesse Winker's potential return to Cincinnati has the fanbase split On the one hand, adding a power-hitter to the middle of the lineup would be a plus. The past three seasons, Winker slugged just .354, but during his five-year run in Cincinnati, Winker's slugging percentage was .504 with a 129 OPS+. Winker appeared to get back on track last season in terms of his power numbers, and the Buffalo native has always had a terrific eye at the dish. Winker was ranked in the 96th percentile last season is terms of chase rate and walk rate according to Baseball Savant. With Jonathan India now in Kansas City and Joey Votto enjoying retirement, the Reds don't have that reliable, patient hitter in the lineup who's able to draw walks and reach base with regularity. Adding a veteran like Winker whose knowledge of the strike zone is among the best in the league would undoubtedly offer an upgrade to the Reds lineup. But there's a downside to signing Winker, and that comes on the other side of the ball. Though he can play in the outfield, Winker is among the worst defenders in Major League Baseball. Last season, while splitting time as a designated hitter, Winker was worth -11 outs above average and -41 OAA for his career. For a club looking to upgrade their defense, adding Winker would seem to be a huge mistake. Whe 31-year-old also has noticeable lefty-right splits that would likely limit him to a platoon role. Last season, Winker hit just .236/.337/.337 against left-handed pitching while posting a .258/.366/.422 slash line against right-handers. Do the Reds really need another defensive liability who's also likely to sit against lefties? From a payroll standpoint, adding Winker makes sense. Few teams are likely to hand over more than a two-year deal in order to sign the longtime Reds outfielder, and the average annual value (AAV) would probably come in at less than $10 million. That's well within the scope of what the Reds could afford. There's definitely reason to believe that a reunion with Winker could work, but only if there are more moves to follow. At least Reds fans know that Winker hates Milwaukee, so he's got that going for him. Stay tuned, Reds fans. This could get interesting.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: An Overview of Catastrophic AI Risks, published by Center for AI Safety on August 16, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. We've recently published on our website a summary of our research paper on catastrophic risks from AI, which we are cross-posting here. We hope that this summary helps to make our research more accessible and to share our policy recommendations in a more convenient format. Executive summary Catastrophic AI risks can be grouped under four key categories which we explore below, and in greater depth in CAIS' linked paper: Malicious use: People could intentionally harness powerful AIs to cause widespread harm. AI could be used to engineer new pandemics or for propaganda, censorship, and surveillance, or released to autonomously pursue harmful goals. To reduce these risks, we suggest improving biosecurity, restricting access to dangerous AI models, and holding AI developers liable for harms. AI race: Competition could push nations and corporations to rush AI development, relinquishing control to these systems. Conflicts could spiral out of control with autonomous weapons and AI-enabled cyberwarfare. Corporations will face incentives to automate human labor, potentially leading to mass unemployment and dependence on AI systems. As AI systems proliferate, evolutionary dynamics suggest they will become harder to control. We recommend safety regulations, international coordination, and public control of general-purpose AIs. Organizational risks: There are risks that organizations developing advanced AI cause catastrophic accidents, particularly if they prioritize profits over safety. AIs could be accidentally leaked to the public or stolen by malicious actors, and organizations could fail to properly invest in safety research. We suggest fostering a safety-oriented organizational culture and implementing rigorous audits, multi-layered risk defenses, and state-of-the-art information security. Rogue AIs: We risk losing control over AIs as they become more capable. AIs could optimize flawed objectives, drift from their original goals, become power-seeking, resist shutdown, and engage in deception. We suggest that AIs should not be deployed in high-risk settings, such as by autonomously pursuing open-ended goals or overseeing critical infrastructure, unless proven safe. We also recommend advancing AI safety research in areas such as adversarial robustness, model honesty, transparency, and removing undesired capabilities. 1. Introduction Today's technological era would astonish past generations. Human history shows a pattern of accelerating development: it took hundreds of thousands of years from the advent of Homo sapiens to the agricultural revolution, then millennia to the industrial revolution. Now, just centuries later, we're in the dawn of the AI revolution. The march of history is not constant - it is rapidly accelerating. World production has grown rapidly over the course of human history. AI could further this trend, catapulting humanity into a new period of unprecedented change. The double-edged sword of technological advancement is illustrated by the advent of nuclear weapons. We narrowly avoided nuclear war more than a dozen times, and on several occasions, it was one individual's intervention that prevented war. In 1962, a Soviet submarine near Cuba was attacked by US depth charges. The captain, believing war had broken out, wanted to respond with a nuclear torpedo - but commander Vasily Arkhipov vetoed the decision, saving the world from disaster. The rapid and unpredictable progression of AI capabilities suggests that they may soon rival the immense power of nuclear weapons. With the clock ticking, immediate, proactive measures are needed to mitigate these looming risks. 2. Malicious Use The first of our concerns is the malicious use of AI. Whe...

'We're not just a brand from the '80s': Esprit CEO William Pak on relaunching the nostalgic apparel brand

Esprit was once a luxury California apparel brand, but it has had a rough couple of decades. In its heyday in the '80s and '90s, it was known for its high-end clothing like sweatshirts. But most of its U.S. business dried up in the 2000s, and the company's German and Hong Kong business began to lose their luster with shoppers. As part of a major restructuring beginning in 2021, William Pak became CEO. Earlier this year, the company posted its first profit since 2017. And now Esprit has big plans to relaunch in the U.S. Pak joined the Modern Retail Podcast this week and spoke about his plans for the brand refresh. "What happened was prior teams or management have kind of changed Esprit from a bold, creative, high-quality product into what was prevalent at the time, which is fast fashion," Pak said. Esprit is the first apparel brand Pak has worked for, but he and his wife have spent much of their professional life helping businesses on the brink. "We've done a lot of business turnarounds, and expansionary business plans," Pak said. "We're quite an optimistic couple, so we like to [take on] optimistic projects." The first phase of the plan was a complete business restructuring, and bringing the company back to profitability. Now that's finished, and Pak is focused on the fun part: rebranding. With that, Esprit is moving its entire business to New York City, with the plan to make it an apparel leader once again. "Whe brand will globally be created, designed, thought through, photographed all in New York City," he said. "And it will resonate globally from there." Currently, Esprit has a pop-up in Soho, but it plans to open a new flagship store next year. What's more, the company is completely refreshing its assortment, and plans to unveil all the new designs later in 2023. In Pak's estimation, now is the right time to relaunch such a brand. Decades like the '80s and '90s are in vogue these days, which gives Esprit the chance to resonate well with multiple generations. But Pak has bigger hopes for the brand beyond regurgitating its prime from 30 year ago. "But we're not just a brand from the '80s, we're now a modernized version of Esprit," said Pak.

How do you respond to signals of irritation or stress from someone you barely know? Do you notice a different reaction if the signals are from someone you feel close to? What about when they come from your child? The ways a parent interacts with their child can have a dramatic impact on how the child's brain forges connections to adapt to the environment they find themselves in. I remember when I shared my own internal responses after I saw a furrow between my youngest daughter's eyes several years ago. Let me take you on a little journey now, and share how things unfolded a little later on that day in relationship with her. After we returned home from an outing with the grandkids, and we put the them down for their naps, I noticed a subtle shift in my daughter's stance. She was standing tall, with her shoulders braced back, and the furrow had returned to crease her brow. "What's up?" I asked as I sat on the couch. "Why aren't you putting Rylan into public school?" she asked pointedly. "Homeschooling supports his style of learning and really works for him," I replied. I felt the familiar tension begin at the nape of my neck, and consciously breathed into the sensation, silently naming to myself how much I enjoy ease and mutual understanding. "Well, he needs socialization, Mom," she said with passion, "He's getting older and needs to be doing things for himself. You can't be doing everything for him all the time. He's got to grow up and do things for himself to be successful in life!" Time stood still for just a moment, in my mind's eye, and in that moment I really got that I did not need to defend anything I was choosing to do for her baby brother. I also really got that I did not need to educate her so that she would "get it." In that moment what I "really got" was that here was my little girl whom I love with all my heart - here was an opportunity for me to hear and resonate with her heart right where she is in this moment! To hear what meaning she is making in life and to connect with what she holds dear. I did my best to respond by meeting her energy with care."You really want your brother to succeed in life and have the tools he needs to do things for himself, don't you?" I acknowledged. "Of course I do!" her eyes widened as she continued, "He's going to need that to be able to go to college and make a life for himself. I know because that's what I'm doing now and it's been hard on me. He needs to start doing things for himself so it won't be so hard for him later on." "It has really opened your eyes to be aware of a lot of new things, to go away to college, hasn't it?" "Yeah, it has, and I've talked with my professors at college about Rylan, and he needs structure and discipline right now." "You really care deeply for your little brother and want to be sure he has all the resources he needs to develop and live a full and meaningful life?" I reflected, connecting to the underlying needs I guessed were present. Her face softened, her posture relaxed, and she moved to sit in the easy chair across from me. At that point I saw something had shifted within her, and she began to pour her heart out to me about all the many things that she had been holding inside. What it has been like for her to live so far away from home, how the student body had become like a family to her, how meaningful it was to have a mentor, how stressful it is to transfer and join a new student body, and how much she worries about and loves her baby brother. She continued to speak, and for an hour and a half together I continued to listen deeply and reflect what I heard her say, co-creating her coherent narrative. Everything a child experiences with a parent will forge connections between the cells in the prefrontal cortex. The flow of emotional energy and information from your brain to your child's brain and from your body to your child's body have a direct and powerful impact on their key emotional and arousal systems.  It's time for another Tim Ferriss Podcast reference. Oh my. David Blaine the magician was such an entertaining 55 minutes!  There were so many actionable words of wisdom. The one that got me to stop and listen again was this one. David told the story when he was a young magician doing street magic. He was in an airport and he got some bags mixed up because they all look the same. He said I think you've got my bag to a nearby traveler. One of the guys in a business suit said, "No I think that guy over there in the in the white limo has your bag." David had no family left after his single mom passed away. He had nothing to lose, walked over to the white limousine, and knocked on the window. The window rolled down. It was Iron Mike Tyson holding up his fist in the prime of the Tyson era! Iron Mike said, "Hey man, what do you want?" Mike Tyson ended up letting David into the limo and they went back to Mike's hotel where David did a bunch of cool magic tricks. Mike was thoroughly entertained and gave him some life-changing advice. He said. "You know I wasn't supposed to be the heavyweight champion of the world. I was too short. My reach was too short as well. But you know... when you have nothing else to lose, you have everything to gain." I just meditated on that for a while as I was vacuuming an Animal Hospital floor and sucking up gobs of hair. When you have nothing else to lose, you have everything to gain. It's the same concept as hitting rock bottom. A lot of addicts and people with a lot of distress have to hit the worst point in the life before they can truly get better. I know people that start side hustles but yet they never make it work. Do you know why? They have everything to lose and very little to gain. They may have a 6-figure full time job with great perks, but they want freedom. It's hard for them to make it. I love the Rocky franchise. Look at Clubber Lang vs Rocky Balboa in fight 1. Clubber had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Rocky had very little to gain and everything to lose. When I was in my first year of cleaning, I was David Blaine or Iron Mike Tyson or Clubber Lang. I had everything against me and everything to gain. I had already lost it all. I had no where to go but up. This motivated me beyond belief and I worked my tail off for scraps. I kept doing it over and over and over until we started getting some traction. If I go to the other end of my first cleaning business, we had a cushy set up in a nice rental house in a nice cul-de-sac. We made good money and I only cleaned 2 days per week. I had a lot to lose and not much to gain (in my mind). The truth of the matter was this. We weren't making it. I should have kept the same intensity throughout my business instead of letting up. I love this advice from Mike Tyson. Where are you at? Do you have nothing to lose and everything to gain? Go hard. Fight your fears and win. Or do you have everything to lose and little to win? This is dangerous as it causes complacency. If you stay where you're at, you will eventually lose what you have. Trust me!

I used to go shopping at Aldi for Teresa after work during the pandemic. Aldi is a small store, but that didn't help me find anything. I would have a texted list. Inevitably, I'd spend 15 minutes finding the first item and then call my wife. She would literally help me find everything else on the list from memory. I was the arms, legs, and eyes. She was the brains. Men, do you relate? Ladies, do you do this for your men? Here's where it gets better. A few times, I went to Aldi with my oldest son. We were like Tweetle-Dee and Tweetle-Dumb. I would never want to see the surveillance tapes of us wandering the isles. Teresa and I were on our way to our annual honeymoon retreat and stopped at a grocery store on the way there. We had breakfast and dinners cooked for us, but needed lunches. I am not a grocery shopper. I rather dislike it. The only thing worse than going grocery shopping is clothes shopping for me. However, my wife it's an excellent grocery shopper and an excellent clothes shopper. One of the last items that we were looking for on this grocery trip was flavored water. These are the drops that you can put in your water to make them taste like fruit. They're pretty good actually. We were somewhere in the back of the store when she thought of buying the flavored water drops. I had no idea where it would be as the grocery story may as well be the Amazon rainforest to me. I'm clueless where to find anything. I know there are signs, but they are not helpful. Anyway, Teresa guided us to the flavored water in less than a minute in a grocery store she was never in. She picked it up, put it in the cart, and was ready for the next thing. My initial comment was, "Wow, how did you find that so fast?!", but playing it off more as a joke. Then I thought about it. If I was given flavored water on a shopping list from my wife and I walked into the store I would have been there for 15 minutes walking every aisle until I found it. The more likely scenario is I would have walked down every isle and not found it after 30 minutes and then asked someone for help. I could have asked someone for help in the beginning but I'm a guy and I don't do that. I would have wandered aimlessly and eventually found that item on my list, been frustrated about it, wasted time, and would have even disliked shopping even more. I am highly inefficient in a grocery store because I don't like grocery stores and avoid them as much as possible. I don't know where things are. Teresa is completely different as she shops for our family on a regular basis. She shops in multiple grocery stores and understands the basic layout of a grocery store. Apparently, there's a system involved where certain types of foods are always grouped together. Instinctively, Teresa knew it would be with the water bottles or with the soft drinks or juices. This is common sense, but apparently it's not common to me. Because she knows the grocery stores so well, she can go into any store and quickly identify, find, pay, and get out efficiently. I am building a case. Are you tracking where I'm going, solo cleaners?Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

This week we start out discussing some quick hits in Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Death Stranding, and more (start). Whe then go in depth with Season 8 of Game of Thrones, which has been receiving heavy criticism from fans and critics alike, and been very divisive (30:00). Is it as bad as some people are saying it is, or is it a victim of unrealistic expectations? We wrap things up with a review of John Wick 3, the latest release in the beloved franchise (1:02:45). Is it just another over-the-top action flick, or is it something much greater, perhaps even one of the greatest?
