In John 9 we have the 6th sign in the healing of the blind man. The discussion in this chapter is similar to the pattern established in chapter 5. Both the blind man and his parents are persecuted by the rulers for accepting Jesus. The formerly blind man gives a remarkable and compelling testimony that Jesus must be from God. The religious leaders spitefully cast out the man who has dumbfounded them with scriptural logic. Our Lord later finds this man in the temple so as to complete his restoration. These events most likely happened at the feast of the Dedication. John 10 is the magnificent account of Jesus being the door and the Good Shepherd. Christ had come that believers might have life and have it more abundantly verses 10-11. Our Lord by laying down his life for his sheep secured for believers that wonderful hope of eternal life in the kingdom of God. Once again the theme of chapter 10 is a repeat and elaboration of chapter 5 ie that his sheep will recognise his voice. In the purpose of bringing salvation to believers he and his Father are one ie united – but our Lord's power is derived from his Father. The Jews reacted to our Lord's words and by claiming that he was speaking blasphemy. Jesus proves from Psalm 82 that the judges of Israel were called “god” as they spoke God's Word. The chapter finishes with Jesus going across the Jordan for some months – in Perea – where he remains until the events of chapter 11 would bring him back.

Thescene opens with Pharisees approaching Jesus: “Get out and depart from here, for Herod will kill you” (v. 31). They're likely scheming, hoping to scareHim from Perea, which was Herod Antipas' territory, back to Judea, where theSanhedrin could trap Him. Herod, who beheaded John the Baptist (Luke 9:7-9),was curious about Jesus' miracles but now threatens His life, perhaps fearingHis influence. The Pharisees' warning may carry truth, yet their motives aresuspect, cloaked in false concern. Jesus, unfazed, and with courage, replies, “Goand tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today andtomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected'” (v. 32). CallingHerod a “fox”, indicating that he was sly and despised, Jesus uses sharpsarcasm, not disrespect, fitting His prophetic role (Nehemiah 4:3). Jesus is novictim of Herod's schemes because He knows that He is following a divinetimetable (John 2:4; Acts 2:23). Nothing, not even Herod's threats, can derailGod's plan for His death at Passover in Jerusalem, decreed before time (1 Peter1:20). “Today and tomorrow” mean He'll continue His work, freeing theoppressed, healing the sick, until the “third day,” hinting at His death and resurrection, when His mission is “finished” (John 19:30). No earthly power, neither Herodnor Pharisees, can stop Him. And it will not stop us if we know God's plan andpurpose for our lives! ThenJesus declares, “Nevertheless I must walk today, tomorrow, and the dayfollowing, for it cannot be that a prophet perish outside of Jerusalem” (v.33). With biting irony, He notes Jerusalem's grim history as the place whereprophets die, judged by the Sanhedrin as false (Luke 11:47-51; Acts 13:27). “Itcannot be”, in other words, “it's not fitting”, for Him to die elsewhere. This isn't resignation; it's resolve to face His destiny, exposing the city'sguilt in rejecting God's messengers. Jesustone now shifts to anguish revealing His compassion: “O Jerusalem,Jerusalem, which kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often Iwanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under herwings, but you were not willing!” (v. 34). This lament, repeated later(Matthew 23:37), pulses with love, not anger. Like a hen shielding chicks fromdanger (Psalm 91:4), Jesus longed to protect Israel—His “house,” both thenation and temple. He knew its history, from Melchizedek to the Maccabees, yetsaw its rebellion. Despite countless chances to repent, they refused, leavingtheir house “desolate” (v. 35). The temple, their idol, would burn in AD 70,the people scattered, with no king or priest (Hosea 3:4). Yet,Jesus gives them hope: “You shall not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is Hewho comes in the name of the Lord'” (v. 35; Psalm 118:26). , This points to His return, whenIsrael will mourn, then embrace Him (Zechariah 12:10; Romans 11:1). Jesusdoesn't forsake them; a future awaits in His coming Millennium reign whenthey'll sing His praise.Jesus' courage should challenge our fears. Hefaced Herod's threats, unmoved, because He trusted God's plan. Are we as bold,or do we shrink from opposition? His lament reveals God's compassionate heartwhich is patient, yearning to gather us, yet grieved by refusal. Israel's “youwere not willing” warns us: privilege doesn't save; only surrender does. The Pharisees hid behind their deceit, and Jerusalem clung to tradition. Today,we might dodge God's call with excuses or delay. But the door of grace won'tstay open forever, because now is the time to respond (Hebrews 4:7). ClosingChallengeTodaydo you hear the calls of Jesus? Are you resisting Jesus' call like Jerusalem,or trusting His timing like He did? This week, face one fear or excuse holdingyou back. Maybe sharing your faith or letting go of control. Step forwardboldly, praying for a heart soft to His gathering wings. Don't say “I wouldnot”, but today say yes.

As Jesus journeys toward Jerusalem, He enters a synagogue in Perea, teaching on the Sabbath as was His custom. There, He encounters a womancrippled for eighteen years, bent double by a spirit of infirmity. This momentbecomes more than a healing, it's a lesson in freedom, compassion, and theclash between God's heart and human tradition.  Youcan imagine the scene. Jesus is preaching when He notices this woman, bowedover, unable to straighten herself. For eighteen years, she'd endured thisaffliction—likely caused by Satan, as Jesus later reveals. Yet, she's faithful, present in the synagogue week after week, seeking God despite her pain. Jesus, ever sensitive to need, calls her forward. It might have seemed harsh to exposeher publicly, but He has a purpose—to defeat Satan, free her, and teach atruth. With a word, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity,” and atouch of His hands, she stands straight, glorifying God. The synagogue eruptsin awe, except for one voice. Theruler of the synagogue, indignant, scolds the crowd: “There are six days towork; come and be healed then, not on the Sabbath!” Too cowardly toconfront Jesus directly, he masks his anger in tradition. His outburst isalmost laughable, did he think healings were routine? Could he have freed herhimself? His bondage to rules was worse than hers to Satan; her body was bent, but his heart and mind were shackled. Jesus calls him out: “You hypocrite!Don't you loose your ox or donkey on the Sabbath to water it? Shouldn't thiswoman, a daughter of Abraham, bound by Satan for eighteen years, be loosed onthis day?” The argument is simple yet profound: if mercy is shown toanimals, how much more to a person made in God's image? Thiswasn't random timing. Jesus chose the Sabbath deliberately, repeating “loose”to drive home the lesson—freedom is His gift, not tradition's prisoner. Thewoman, a “daughter of Abraham,” likely had faith, marking her as one ofGod's own. Her healing wasn't just physical; it mirrored spiritual liberation.Sin, sorrow, and suffering bow us down (Psalm 38:6; 42:5), but Christ lifts usup. Satan oppresses, sometimes for years, even believers (think of Paul's thornin 2 Corinthians 12), but Jesus' power is greater (John 10:10). Not everysickness is demonic (Luke 6:17-19), but when it is, Jesus can break itinstantly. Theruler's reaction reveals a deeper issue. He saw the Sabbath as a checklist, nota gift of rest (Matthew 11:28-30). Tradition became his excuse to avoidcompassion. Jesus exposes this hypocrisy, shaming His critics into silencewhile the crowd rejoices at His “glorious things.” The synagogue ruler'spetty clock told yesterday's time, blind to the new era Jesus brought (Luke12:56). This was no violation; it was God's work, fitting for the Sabbath. Whatdoes this mean for us today? Jesus still calls the bowed-down—those crippled bysin or grief—to come to Him. He offers freedom, not just from physical chainsbut from spiritual ones, often before we even ask. Yet, like the ruler, we cancling to rules or routines that block mercy. The Sabbath here isn't aboutlegalism but heart-rest through grace. When we see suffering, do we respondwith Christ's compassion or hide behind excuses? His adversaries were ashamed; His followers rejoiced. Which side are we on? ClosingChallengeThisweek, look for someone “bowed down”—physically, emotionally, or spiritually.Don't let tradition or busyness stop you; take one step to “loose” them withkindness—a call, a helping hand, or a prayer. Reflect: Are you free in Christ,or bound by your own rules? Act in His mercy today. PrayerLordJesus, thank You for seeing us in our infirmities and calling us to freedom.Forgive us when we prioritize tradition over compassion, like the synagogueruler. Loose us from sin, sorrow, and self-made chains, and help us lift othersas You do. May we rejoice in Your glorious works, living out Your grace thisweek. In Your name, Amen.

In this episode we explain how the deity-of-Christ interpretation of John's Gospel is wrong. Three, Yea verily Four Keys to Understanding John's Gospel 1.       The Purpose statement of the author, John 20:30-31 “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”   The original target audience of the Gospel of John was Israelites in the Diaspora. John wrote to convince and help them to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.  See more below.   2.      In John's Gospel, Jesus declares that he is a man who told the truth which he heard from God. John 8:40, “but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.” Jesus differentiates himself from God. Jesus is a man, not a god-man, not one person of God who is incarnated in a human nature.  Jesus states that he is a human being, a man who declares the truth that heard from someone else, specifically, from God.    3.      In John's Gospel, Jesus declared that the Father is the only true God. John 17:1-3 “Father… this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent. The God that was speaking and working in and through the man Jesus was the Father. Christology of John is agency, not incarnation.  Jesus as God's unique human son was sent by God and as such represented God, is to be regarded as the very presence of God (the Father) who sent him.   4.      John is an Israelite, writing to Israelites. He is not writing originally to Gentiles. a.      Metaphors, figurative language. John 10:6 (context is the thief vs. the shepherd), “This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.”   John 16:25, "I have said these things to you in figures of speech.”   Come into the world, come down from heaven, “This is the bread that has come down from heaven” (6:50) “the bread I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (Joh 6:51) Jesus' flesh literally descended from heaven?   “The baptism of John, was it from heaven or from man” (Mar 11:30) means “Was John's baptism of heavenly or of human origin?”  (Mar 11:30) b.      “Jews” means “Judeans”. “He came to his own, but his own received him not”. Samaritans, and Israelites in Galilee and Perea accepted him. c.      “world” does not mean planet earth, but the Israelite world. The world that God loved (John 3:16), is Israel.   Resources: In the Gospel of John the “Jews” are Judeans, Not All “Jews” https://landandbible.blogspot.com/2022/02/in-gospel-of-john-jews-are-judeans-not.html   The “Greeks” in John's Gospel are Greek Speaking Israelites, not Gentiles https://landandbible.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-greeks-hellenists-in-gospel-of-john.html What About John 1:1? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw44JRTIiV0

As Jesus prepares for a final evangelistic campaign, He tells His followers that after ministering through Samaria, Perea and Judea they will end up in Jerusalem where He will be arrested and killed. He warns them that the days ahead may bring hardship and even death for them as well. Then as they actually all begin to travel southward, the reality of what lies ahead begins to worry some of His disciples and test the depth of their commitment to Him. Luke records three brief conversations which show people struggling with the decision to follow Jesus into the firestorm ahead. It's one thing to follow Jesus during the glory of His preaching and healing ministry, but it's quite another to follow Him on the road to the cross. Now the quality of our decision to follow Him gets tested and the deep motives of our hearts come to light. As we listen to Jesus interact with each person, we will learn important truths about making decisions that last.

Tuesday, 20 August 2024   Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, Matthew 2:19   “And Herod having died, behold, a messenger of the Lord in a dream appears to Joseph in Egypt” (CG).   In the previous verse, Matthew cited Jeremiah 31:15 concerning the prophecy about Rachel mourning for her children. With that now complete, he next records, “And Herod having died.”   Herod's death was recorded by Flavius Josephus and others in antiquity. The Expositor's Greek Testament, citing several sources, says –   “Herod died in 750 U. C. in his 70th year, at Jericho, of a horrible loathsome disease, rotten in body as in soul, altogether an unwholesome man.”   As for the timing, it is debated how long this period was, but most agree it was only a few months after the killing of the children in Bethlehem, though some argue as much as six or seven years. Regardless of the exact time spent there, eventually, Matthew next records, “behold, a messenger of the Lord in a dream appears to Joseph in Egypt.”   This is now the third time a messenger of the Lord has appeared to him. This time, however, it is outside of the land of Canaan. This should not be remarkable as the Lord can appear anywhere and at any time, but it demonstrates that the Lord does, in fact, speak to His people outside of Canaan. This is in contradistinction to some claims over the millennia that the Lord does not do so.   The Bible is filled with such instances, and such ridiculous claims should not ever be entertained. As for the departed Herod, Albert Barnes shares the following –   “Herod left three sons, and the kingdom was at his death divided between them. To Archelaus was given Judea, Idumea, and Samaria; to Philip, Batanea and Trachonitis; to Antipas, Galilee and Perea.   Each of these was also called Herod, and these are the individuals who are so frequently referred to in the New Testament during the ministry of the Saviour and the labors of the apostles.”   Life application: Translation of Scripture involves more than just conveying words or expressions between languages. It takes careful consideration, consistency, and a watchful eye to ensure that each word or phrase is actually translated. Eyes can skip easily over words or phrases, something quite common when similar words are used within a single verse.    As for consistency, when the context is the same, words should be similarly translated. Otherwise, a false sense of what is being conveyed can come about. However, this is not something that is always possible. There are multiple words that can have similar meanings, and there are many possible meanings for some individual words.   Moreover, when there are translation committees that handle individual portions of Scripture, the biases and preferences of each committee will often show through. It may be that one committee may have a book to translate, but individuals within a committee may be responsible for one or two chapters.   This can lead to real inaccuracies slipping through the cracks. For example, the Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary says –   “Our translators, somewhat capriciously, render the same expression ‘the angel of the Lord,' Mt 1:20; 2:13; and ‘an angel of the Lord,' as here.”   The exact term in Greek is aggelos kyriou, or “angel Lord.” Notice what JFB is referring to in the KJV –   1:20 - the angel of the Lord 2:13 - the angel of the Lord 2:19 - an angel of the Lord   The first two instances insert a presupposition, “the angel of the Lord.” In the Old Testament, that generally is referring to the Lord. In the third instance, an unnamed angel representing the Lord is signified.   The first two have inserted words without italicizing them to indicate they are not in the original and they are clearly wrong. The KJV is famous for this willy-nilly type of inconsistency in both testaments and so the reader can be led down incorrect paths of thinking about what the text is saying.   Someone could come to the unfounded conclusion that “the angel of the Lord” appears to Joseph only in the land of Canaan, but then He directs one of His subordinates to appear outside of the land. That would be a ridiculous assumption, but this is what happens when faulty translation occurs.   Be sure to not get caught up in reading one translation and assume it is the only God-inspired translation. Be studious and diligent to check things out before making final conclusions about matters of theology.   Lord God, help us to be wise and studious concerning Your word. It is so very precious, and so may You be with us as we read it, contemplate it, and tell other people things that we have learned from it. Above all, thank You for Jesus our Lord who is the One Scripture is pointing us to. Yes, thank You for our precious Savior, Jesus. Amen.

The call to send missionaries came during a small gathering of church leaders. Five men, all of whom functioned as prophets and teachers, had set aside time to fast and worship. It appears the purpose for the meeting was to listen to the Lord. It also appears, from the casual way Luke describes it, that this sort of gathering was a normal part of life. He names the men: “Now among the church in Antioch there were both prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon, who was called Niger, and Lucius the Cyrenian (Ac 11:20), and also Manaen, the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch (Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee and Perea, 4BC-AD39) and Saul.” Then Luke tells us what happened: “And while ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart to me now Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'” And finally, he tells us how they responded: “Then, having fasted and prayed to prepare themselves, and having laid hands on them, they released them.” Once again, these early believers are teaching us how to live out our faith. In this case, they show us how to wait on the Lord and receive guidance. Luke lists who gathered, describes how they listened, and he even reports how they responded. No subject is more important to a true believer. Our softened hearts long to do His will, but at times we still struggle to know His will. That's why Luke's picture of what took place in Antioch is such a gift to us. He's given us a model of how the early church listened to God.
