Lots of people dream of starting a ski or snowboard or some type of company in the outdoor industry. But how do you go about actually doing that, and really getting a company off the ground? At Blister Summit 2025, I talked with four individuals who had the dream — and the audacity — to start their own companies: Klem Branner, Venture Snowboards; Will Ritter, Spark R&D; Jamie Grant, CARV; and Cobey Nash, AlpenFlow Design. Today you'll hear them talk about the highs, the lows, and the breakthroughs that come with starting a company — and the arguably even more challenging work of keeping a company going.RELATED LINKS:Get Covered: BLISTER+TOPICS & TIMES:New Blister Cinematic Ep w/ Cody (1:00)New BLISTER+ Members (2:01)Founder Introductions (3:42)How Long from Idea to Launch? How can technology enhance our adventure experiences on skis? Is it possible that ski coaches, instructors and guides can be replaced by technology all together? In this episode we touch on these questions as we explore Carv with Morgan Engel and Alex Jackson. Carv is a small device that skiers can affix to their ski boots that analyzes their movement patterns as they ski. The data that Carv collects is uploaded to a user-friendly app on a Smart Phone. From here, users can either analyze the data and metrics themselves. Users can also select one of the coaching modes that provides targeted feedback. This makes Carv the largest ski school in the world by hours taught!Alex Jackson is the VP of Marketing for Carv and is based in the UK. Morgan Engel is a PSIC Level 4, CSIA Level 4 and PSIA Level 3 ski instructor and a PSIC Level 4 Licensed Professional Trainer in Whistler, British Columbia. Morgan has been working with Carv as an Ambassador and Advisor for the past six years. Morgan has also helped develop the Carv Instructor Certification offered through the Professional Ski Instructors of Canada.Morgan has been working with Carv as an Ambassador and Advisor for the past six years. Morgan has also helped develop the Carv Instructor Certification offered through the Professional Ski Instructors of Canada.Alex Jackson and Morgan Engel share their insights on what Carv is and how it can be used as a development tool for not just skiers, but by instructors, guides and coaches.TakeawaysInnovative: Carv is definitely a well thought out skill development tool for skiers that adds the possibility of gamifying skiing by trying to reach higher and higher scores. It is also nice to have a tool that measures your performance objectively with weight being placed on your performance instead of your style.Does Not Replace Snow Sports Professionals: There is still an important role for instructors when it comes to interpreting and communicating the data and structuring development. Carv also isn't going to tell you where the best snow is on a given run or how to prepare for what you are going to encounter before you get there.Adventure Enhancer: Carv is an excellent example of where technology can enhance the user experience. Other technologies that I can think of are apps like Stava and Gaia and devices like GoPros and even Smart Phones.Importance of Milestones: To keep us motivated and in a positive space, we need be able to break progress into small pieces. The one thing that Carv does well that other similar technologies should take note of is pointing out each time the user has reached a new level. It might be improving a certain metric or achieving an improved score. Guest BioAlex Jackson is based in London, UK and is the co-founder and VP of Marketing for Carv.

A proposta aguarda sanção presidencial. Ouça a entrevista completa:

We focus on ski touring in this equipment special. Iain and Al look at the best skis and ski boots for people wanting an ‘all-rounder' set up or a dedicated lightweight touring set up, as well as discussing layers and the different bindings available. This Special Episode of The Ski Podcast has been made possible by Ellis Brigham. They are the winter sports specialists, with 16 shops around the UK where you can find all the kit you need for this winter. Alternatively, simply go to their website at ellis-brigham.com and you can buy online now. SHOW NOTES What is ski touring? (5:30) What are ‘skins'? (6:00) How are the bindings different? (7:30) Iain went ski touring in Morocco (9:30) How important is weight? (11:00) Al's weight comparison example (11:45) A 95mm freeride ski will weigh upwards of 1,650g per ski in a 175cm length An equivalent touring ski would be 200-400g lighter per ski. In this case, we'll use 300g per ski A regular freeride binding would be around 1,000g per binding An equivalent Kingpin is around 300g lighter per binding A regular Alpine boot is around 2,000g per boot (in a 26.5MP) An equivalent freeride touring boot can be 500g lighter per boot For skis, binding and boots, a ‘lightweight' set up could be 2.8kg lighter overall: equivalent to saving 14kg off your backpack The Best ‘All Round' Touring Skis – Salomon QST98 - £550 (18:30) The Best ‘Lightweight' Touring Skis – Atomic Backland 88 - £500 (20:30) What is a Split Board? Jon Jordan and BlockchainGamer.biz editor Jenny Jordan discuss all the news from 2024. [2:16] The success of Pixels was an ongoing trend in 2024; but it wasn't always about DAUWs. [2:35] Heroes of Mavia was the first big game and token launch of 2024 but it didn't scale. [4:10] In 2024, we saw a lot of blockchain games launching through app stores but no big hits. [6:10] Browser vs app stores and PC gaming stores remains a key business decision. [8:44] A lot of meme-y game coins such as MON, PORTAL, CARV, XAI launched in Q1. [11:30] There was a lot of news about chain migration - so many new L2 and L3 chains. [13:00] In Q2, there was a big change in sentiment with game token prices tanking. [14:11] The rise of KOLs, who encouraged retail crypto to invest in new tokens with often bad results. [16:05] The rise of Telegram and TON as a strong marketing channel for blockchain games. [17:46] Another nascent year for Immutable: Guild of Guardians was not a success. [22:17] But in Immutable's defence... 4 million Immutable Passport wallet sign-ups. [28:28] In Q3, the issue of bots became a problem esp. in respect to airdrops and token rewards. [30:09] What are you trying to do with your blockchain game when it comes to giving out value? [32:04] Does it matter if bots or AI agents are paying $10 to play your game? [32:30] The other thing in Q3 was the start of successful games on Ronin - Wild Forest, Lumiterra etc. [34:56] Pretty much every game launched on Ronin has got +100,000 DAUWs in testing. [37:19] Should we view console game Off The Grid as a success? [44:22] Whatever happened to The Sandbox? [45:25] CCP Game's EVE Frontier is now in closed alpha testing. [46:59] What's significant is these projects are very serious about the value of blockchain in games. [49:45] More generally, the US presidential election was the clear pivot point for crypto in 2024. [52:51] Investment into the sector was down on 2023 but around $1 billion.

As artificial intelligence reshapes our world at an unprecedented pace, the United States is being pressured to act. However, with Congress failing to pass meaningful AI legislation despite introducing over 100 bills, we face mounting challenges in governing this transformative technology. Paulo Carvão from Harvard’s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government shares how, moving forward, the interplay between state initiatives, executive actions, and legislative gridlock will all influence how we'll shape AI's future in our democracy.
In episode 142, I am excited to introduce the topic of AI to the show. Technology plays a massive role in our daily lives, but also in shaping the outdoor industry and our experiences with the natural world. With AI applications on the rise, there are many ways that AI can be detrimental to the environment as well as to our interpretation of the world and art. I will eventually do an episode on the environmental impacts and long-term effects of AI and data centers, but for this episode, we wanted to take a bit of a positive spin and look at some ways that AI can be used to optimize our time spent outdoors. To help explain all things AI and provide a more positive outlook on the future of AI technology, I had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with Jamie Grant. Jamie is the co-founder and CEO of Carv, the digital ski coach. He has a background in Physics and a PhD in Statistics. Jamie came late to skiing, starting when he was 18. After falling in love with the sport, he has dedicated his career to developing Carv to help elevate technique and overall enjoyment in the sport. TED'S BIO If you start doing something at the age of 2, you may get pretty good at it and such is the case with Ted and skiing. A true pioneer with a distinctive, unparalleled, lightning-fast and highly aggressive carving style he perfected playing around with his childhood friends in Park City, where he grew up. Still in his 30's, Ted retired from skiing a few years ago and is by far one of the best alpine ski racers in the world. He is also a serial entrepreneur having founded Shred Optics (an outdoor winter gear company) and currently as a shareholder of Carv (a hardware/software enabled digital ski coach). His childhood nickname and to this day is “shred” - and he hardcore “carv(es)”. Ted is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, winning the combined in 2006 (Turin, Italy) and the giant slalom in 2014 (Sochi, Russia), and is a five-time World-Cup champion in giant slalom. He finished his career with 25 victories and 52 podiums in competition. His record puts him among the three greatest giant slalom skiers of all time. His full record and stats here. He is a household name in the world of winter sports and a life-long skier and ambassador for the sport who is currently an NBC analyst, brand ambassador, content creator, public speaker and business owner. Some of the brands he is or has been affiliated with include Land Rover, Apple, Deer Valley, and GoPro and as his own website puts it: “He's comfortable connecting with people on the slopes and in the boardroom, for Fortune 500 companies… his Olympic and entrepreneurial experiences, as well as his journey of going from a kid at the bottom of the rankings to one of the best skiers in the world, captivate all audiences.” He certainly did with our host and those who listen to this remarkable human being at the Top Of The Game. Paulo Carvão discusses AI's impact on the public interest, emerging regulatory schemes, progress over perfection, and education as the lynchpin for ethical tech. In this thoughtful discussion, Paulo outlines the cultural, ideological and business factors underpinning the current data economy. An economy in which the manipulation of personal data into private corporate assets is foundational. Opting for optimism over cynicism, Paul advocates for a first principles approach to ethical development of AI and emerging tech. He argues that regulation creates a positive tension that enables innovation. Paulo examines the emerging regulatory regimes of the EU, the US and China. Preferencing progress over perfection, he describes why regulating technology for technology's sake is fraught. Acknowledging the challenge facing existing school systems, Paulo articulates the foundational elements required of a ‘bilingual' education to enable future generations to “do the right things.” Paulo Carvão is a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative, a global tech executive and investor.
