Comedian and writer Josh Gondelman is a pep-talk enthusiast and famously upbeat guy, with a solid career and a happy home life. Not one of these traits does he share with Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac), from the Coen Brothers' 2013 film INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS. And yet, when he saw it in the theater, Josh felt so seen by Llewyn -- and not in a good way -- that he couldn't watch the movie again for a decade. Infinity Break Marketing Director and local 30 Rock enthusiast Jay is BACK and so are we to talk about Tuca and Bertie. It only seems fitting that Lesley and Ben cover Tuca and Bertie for their adult animated season since they got their start together analyzing Bojack Horseman! We talk about Lisa Hanawalt and Raphael Bob-Waksberg and their career growth, fawn over Steven Yeun and talk about the wildly fluid animation style that populates the creatures of Tuca and Bertie. Plus, hear about the sordid production history of the show and our thoughts on HBO's weird vendetta against animation that happened earlier this summer. We're really excited to talk about Adult Animation together for Season 2 of Syndicated with Lesley and Ben. We have a wonderful line up of shows and guests coming up in the next few months. Join us as we take a look at Tuca and Bertie, discussing adult animation, sex and relationships, surrealism, and how sometimes your limbs just figuratively fall off and that's okay. The post Episode 162 – Tuca and Bertie appeared first on FAKE GEEK GIRLS.
The first thing that I noticed when watching Tuca & Bertie was that there was a LOT going on. Bertie is frantically trying to navigate her magazine job at Conde Nest AND her dream of being professional baker AND her relationship with her loving and sometimes perplexing boyfriend Speckle. Tuca is just trying to navigate what it means to be a responsible adult as she manages sobriety, romance, and a changing relationship with her best friend, Bertie. Beyond that, there's just a lot happening on the screen, like quick visual gags, complex background characters, and a universe where plants sometimes have human bodies and are somewhat mystical. We were excited to find out all about it from our Maximum Fun colleague, Lisa Hanawalt (co-host of Baby Geniuses), who created the show and runs it. Lisa shares her stories of mental health's role in her life from being a shockingly morbid preschooler to panic attacks on the freeway as an adult. We never do get her to explain the plants with human bodies but she does fill us in on the Sex Bugs, which may be both pubic lice AND a touring rock band.Watch Tuca & Bertie Sundays at 11:30 pm on adultswim or online. I interview the Character design supervisor on Tuca and Bertie (Adult Swim), and my LONG time friend Amanda. We discuss art school and finding ‘our people' and how to break into a field where it seems like ‘you have to know someone' Amanda has a lot of great advice for students and career seekers and I felt like I learned a lot from her in our hour. She also shared a ton of resource links I have in the comments section on Patreon and Youtube.
The animated series Tuca & Bertie stars two best friends in the classic odd couple tradition: Tiffany Haddish voices free-spirited Tuca and Ali Wong plays anxious Bertie. That setup may sound familiar, but the setting isn't: Tuca and Bertie are birds, and they live in a surreal world pulsing with color, drugs and plant-people. When it debuted back in 2019, Tuca & Bertie developed a rabid fanbase, but Netflix canceled it after one season. Now, it's found a new home on Adult Swim.
This week, Louisa Lawler (@weezyweasley), Background Artist for animated TV shows discusses how no one just “makes it” in their career and details her year long journey from of moving across the country to landing at Bojack Horseman. We talk about the idea of “Lie and Learn It Later” while laughing about the promises we’ve all made in an interview in order to get the job. She shares her thoughts on getting involved in your professional community and using networking, no matter how awkward, to your advantage. We compare the dreaded “skill test” to the technical challenge of the Great British Bake-off while admitting your day-to-day reality of your jobs is more like the signature challenge. Lastly, Louisa says it’s okay to not be at the top of your game starting out because there’s no way but to grow when you’re working. On this FFR, we’re talkin’ ‘bout the wonderful new animated series Tuca and Bertie! Created by Bojack Horseman producer and production designer Lisa Hanawalt, Tuca and Bertie stars Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong as best friends whose friendship must evolve when Bertie moves in with her boyfriend Speckle. Oh, and also they’re all birds. Our conversation covers the way in which the show explores numerous experiences and issues with honesty, compassion, and humor, as well as its avoidance of certain harmful stereotypes, and the (sadly) rare and refreshing way in which it treats female sexuality. Also, our reactions to fan reactions to the end of Game of Thrones, and the latest from KeanuWatch 2019. Hello everyone! Skip ahead to 14:27 if you want to miss our chat about Howard Stern's interview on Terry Gross' Fresh Air on NPR (or hang out with us as we delve into it). We watched The Choice based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. It was a mixed bag, but we both agree it was beautifully shot. Tuca and Bertie stars the voice acting of Tiffany Haddish (Girls' Trip) and Ali Wong (Hard Knock Wife) and is just adorable, kooky and delightful. Highway Thru Hell takes us back to when the Alberta Oil Sands were booming just a few years ago (they're not anymore) and some of the characters and conflicts that fuel the show.

Were you missing anthropomorphic cartoon animals dealing with serious issues as much as we were? You're in luck, because Lisa Hanawalt, the illustrator and producer of Bojack Horseman, has a new Netflix series about two birds, Tuca and Bertie, and it's one of our favorites of the year. If you haven't watched it yet, well, nothing is stopping you (but we avoid "spoilers" anyway). And if a songthrush and a toucan's evolving friendship isn't weird enough for you, may we recommend the sketch comedy show I Think You Should Leave? We also talk Fosse/Verdon and, no joke, hoops. Shows discussed: Tuca and Bertie, I Think You Should Leave, Fosse/Verdon, NBA Playoffs
On this week's episode of Kickin' & Streamin' podcast, Jocelyn & Graham are joined by John Allison, a friend and listener who suggested we watch and make an episode about Netflix's Original Series "The OA." After binge-watching both seasons of the show, host and co-host Graham & Jocelyn felt they would need help to break down one of the most complex and mind-bending series ever produced in the history of Netflix. Graham called upon John and he responded the call. We start the episode talking about the recent passing of Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew who John tells us he had met on several occasions. John reminisced about how Mr. Mayhew, despite being seemingly under tremendous amount of physical discomfort due to his unusual growth, was always gentle, kind, and courteous to every fan who approached him. RIP Peter Mayhew (aka) Chewbacca! We then moved on to talking about some of the upcoming series we're excited about on the various streaming platforms, as well as some other series about which we haven't got the slightest idea of what to expect from them. Graham and Jocelyn announced the premiering of "Dead to Me" on Netflix, "Lucifer," "The Society," as well as animated series "Tuca & Bertie." Jocelyn also point out the release of "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile," a movie about notorious American serial killer Ted Bundy on Netflix, starring Zac Efron. Graham expressed interest in the HBO mini series "Chernobyl" on HBO, the return of Amazon Prime series "Sneaky Pete," starring Giovanni Ribisi. Graham brought up an apparently newly acquired series on Amazon called Whisenpoof; which none of us seemed to know what it was about, until we later realized it's animated Canadian-American series. We discussed actor Sterling K Brown's announcement a few weeks ago about joining the cast of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" (Amazon Prime), we also discussed how none of us thinks too highly about "This is Us." We then moved on to discussing our main topic of the week, Netflix Original Series "The OA," created, written, produced, and starring Brit Marling with her writing partner Zal Batmanglij.
