Synopsis Strange darling opens with title cards that explain the movie is about a nationwide serial killer's final murders told in six parts. From there we jump into part three in media res with a chase scene with a frantic woman in a pinto is being chased by Kyle Galner in a pickup truck with intent to kill. told non-linearly, you will be quickly be asking yourself are the filmmakers fucking with me? The answer is yes, the filmmakers are fucking with you, so sit back and appreciate it, Review of Strange Darling The first time I heard about this movie was from a Red Letter Media video lauding Kyle Galner. Our patrons have suggested it several times and it finally won the vote. I had high hopes going in and was prepared for a good movie, so I was pleasantly surprised when that is actually what I got. this is a tense and smart thriller that plays with not only the timeline of the plot, but the assumptions of the audience. It explores the themes of consent, trust, sado-masochism, pride, and prejudice. The film is written and directed by JT Mollner who most recently wrote the screenplay for The Long Walk. He does a great job here manipulating audience alliances and revealing just enough information to keep us on our toes. The film looks great, and I was shocked to see that it was shot by a first time cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi. From the dramatic lighting to the old school film techniques, it is a beautiful movie. Kyle Gallner and Willa Fitzgerald lead the movie and although they aren't famous names, they bring top tier performances that highlight the subtlety in the script and sell the misdirections well. Overall, this movie is thoroughly worth your time and I think is one of the best thrillers that I have seen in the last decade. Score 9/10

James Cameron has returned to take us on a third trip to Pandora. Avatar: Fire and Ash is now out in cinemas worldwide and I finally, FINALLY had the chance to see the film yesterday after a long week of packing and traveling. This has easily been one of my most anticipated films of the year and pretty easily so because back in September 2022, I fell in love with this franchise. Finally having the chance to see the first Avatar in cinemas during its theatrical release-release was a game-changing cinematic experience for me and completely changed my perspective on a film that I felt very lukewarm to before that point. And then in December, Avatar: The Way of Water became a smash box office hit and, as far as I'm concerned, surpassed the first film by almost every single measure of quality. So, is the magic and awe of Pandora still alive? Is Avatar: Fire and Ash the best film in the trilogy? Find out all the answers in this review!Avatar: Fire and Ash:Directed by: James CameronScreenplay by: James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda SilverStory by: James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, Shane SalernoBased on charaacters created by: James CameronProduced by: Jon Landau, James CameronExeucutive Producers: Richard Baneham, Rae Sanchini, Peter M. pWotD Episode 3151: Avatar: Fire and Ash Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 173,847 views on Wednesday, 17 December 2025 our article of the day is Avatar: Fire and Ash.Avatar: Fire and Ash is a 2025 American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from a story the trio wrote with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Distributed by 20th Century Studios and produced by Lightstorm Entertainment, it is the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and the third installment in the Avatar franchise. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo and Duane Evans, Jr. reprise their roles from the previous films, while Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis join the cast.Cameron, who had stated in mid-2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar (2009) if it was successful, announced the first two sequels in early 2010 following the success of the first film, with the then-untitled Avatar 3 aiming for a December 2015 release. However, the addition of two more sequels (four in total), and the development of new technology required to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, pre-production, and visual effects. Avatar: Fire and Ash started shooting simultaneously with The Way of Water in New Zealand on September 25, 2017; filming completed in late December 2020, after over three years of shooting. With an estimated budget of over $400 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made.Avatar: Fire and Ash had its world premiere at Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, on December 1, 2025, and was first released in Germany and Phillipines on December 17, 2025, and in the United States on December 19. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised the visuals, characters, performances, and action but criticized the runtime and simplicity of the plot. Two additional sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are in various stages of production and are scheduled to be released in 2029 and 2031, respectively. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:12 UTC on Thursday, 18 December 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Avatar: Fire and Ash on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Geraint.

Film writer and critic Brendan Hodges joins to discuss Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, a self-proclaimed love letter to the filmmaker's WWII veteran father and all the fighting men of the Second World War. Visceral, upsetting, and deeply conflicted, the film formally disavows many of Spielberg's more populist tendencies as director and creates a tension between the valorizing, mythic tone of its war movie forebears and its own aims as a subjective, hyperreal chronicle of boots-on-the-ground combat. Is the film a viscious, jingoistic piece of propaganda? A formally exhilarating but ideologically dubious piece of late 20th century moviemaking? Or is it, as our guest asserts, one of the most misunderstood texts in popular American cinema? We begin by reflecting on Saving Private Ryan's legacy and cultural context, its place as a cultural behemoth and its application as a load-bearing hagiography for American militarism that found new purchase in a post-9/11 context just a few years after its release. Then, we examine Spielberg's formalism, how images contradict text within the film, and what to make of the movie's propositions on its own terms. Finally, we address the movie's evocation of difficult realities of warfare, and ask if the film meets the mandate and responsibility of such images; how history and contemporary context color our interpretations, and what value there is in continuing to return to such questions in our current moment. This week we're looking at the surprisingly successful, but oft forgotten film Lost in Translation. We talk about the careers of Sofia Coppola, Bill Murray, and Scarlett Johansson, the themes of alienation and disassociation, liminal spaces, Tokyo, selling out, whiskey, and more! I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa Lost in Translation is a 2003 romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Sofia Coppola. Bill Murray stars as Bob Harris, a fading American movie star who is having a midlife crisis when he travels to Tokyo to promote Suntory whisky. There, he befriends another disillusioned American named Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), a young woman and recent college graduate. Giovanni Ribisi, Anna Faris, and Fumihiro Hayashi are also featured. The film explores themes of alienation and disconnection against a backdrop of cultural displacement in Japan. It defies mainstream narrative conventions and is atypical in its depiction of romance.
"Dads" is sitcom that aired on FOX from 2013-2014. The series stars Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi who play two successful video game developers in their 30s whose lives are turned upside down when their overbearing and dysfunctional fathers move in with them. Much of the show's comedic dynamic is based on culture clash, and boundary-pushing jokes. "Dads" received largely negative reviews from critics upon its premiere for relying on racial stereotypes, crude humor, and lack of character development. FOX initially defended the series and ordered six more episodes beyond the original 13-episode commitment (for a total of 19), the show never overcame its critical reception. Is this show too much for even the S1E1 boys? Listen as they deep dive the show's pilot episode. Starring: Seth Green, Giovanni Ribisi, Brenda Song, Vanessa Lachey, Tonita Castro, Peter Riegert, Martin Mull, & Dan Castellaneta www.S1E1POD.com Instagram & X (Twitter): @S1E1POD

Someone once asked, "Why is Horizon?"And that's exactly what Connor, Matt and Frank are here to...also ask. Welcome back to our Kevin Costner series for Part 2, where we cover Chapter 1. Today we get revenge on Matt for making everyone watched the Postman to bring him Costner's opus: Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, the first 3 glorious hours of what is expected to be a 12 hour, 4-movie franchise (I hear in part 3 we're going to meet the Fire Navi). The first installment in the titular film series, it features an ensemble cast of Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Giovanni Ribisi, with Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, and Jamie Campbell Bower in supporting roles. The film follows several characters navigating life in the Midwestern territories amid the American Civil War.
"Based on true events" or "Inspired by true events" is not that uncommon for film, especially the thriller and horror genres. The new film, THE MAN IN THE WHITE VAN, is one of them. Though completely fictional, it is inspired by the real life Florida serial killer Billy Mansfield. From Rottentomatoes: "Inspired by a true story, "The Man in the White Van" delves into the eerie underbelly of a seemingly idyllic 1975 Florida town, and follows the harrowing experience of young Annie Williams, a spirited girl whose carefree existence is turned upside down as she becomes stalked by an ominous man in a white van."The film was directed and co-written by Warren Skeels. The film starts Madison Wolfe, Brec Bassinger, Ali Larter, and Sean Astin. With the help of Ali Larter, Sean Astin, and Giovanni Ribisi (as cinematographer) to independently produce, the movie was picked up by Relativity Media for distribution. It received mixed reviews on release, but is this film truly a hidden gem that everyone must see?

This week, we're cracking open the vault and dissecting Ben Younger's groundbreaking film, “Boiler Room,” on its 25th anniversary. More than just a flashy depiction of Wall Street greed, “Boiler Room” offered a starkly realistic look at the pressure-cooker environment of a pump-and-dump brokerage. We'll analyze Younger's directorial choices, Giovanni Ribisi's electrifying performance, and Vin Diesel's memorable supporting role. We'll also discuss the film's impact on the careers of Nia Long, Ben Affleck, Nicky Katt, Scott Caan, Tom Everett Scott, Ron Rifkin, and more! Joining us for his discussion is Paul of The Review Review Podcast who is on board to offer up some compelling insight on a film that he chose for us to deep dive as the film crosses this major milestone. Join us as we explore the film and why we think it should be allowed to stand up proudly alongside similar films of the genre that are much more well known. From its commentary on ambition, ethics, and the pursuit of the American Dream, “Boiler Room” is a film everyone should get familiar with.Links For Guests: The Review Review PodcastWhere To Watch Boiler Room

Charlie joins Caitlin to cover Strange Darling, a recent erotic thriller from JT Mollner. We both really loved the movie, and we enjoyed taking a closer look at the gender themes throughout. Tangents include: Top Chef (skippers, jump to minute 11 to get to the movie review), favorite months, pet names, balloons, feral cats, horror universes to live in, horror soundtracks, and Jennifer Tilly.

We're back! Yes, after a whole week off for the Christmas holidays, the Empire Podcast has returned to darken your aural doors once more, and the first pod of 2025 is an absolute belter, as Chris Hewitt sits down with four incredible guests. First, he talks carousel horses and chocolate with We Live In Time stars, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. [24:27 - 36:32 approx] Second, he welcomes Nosferatu star Nicholas Hoult back to the pod, and they talk about embracing fear, giving golf lessons in costume, and Hoult taking over the pod one day. [55:19 - 1:11:23 approx] Third, he has a lovely natter with Giovanni Ribisi about his 15-year overnight success as DP of last year's excellent Strange Darling, which is available now in various formats for your home viewing pleasure. [1:41:51 - 1:57:00 approx] Then, in the podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara and debutante Becky Darke for a fun episode in which they make bold and no doubt wildly off-kilter box office predictions for the year ahead, discuss Chris Nolan's The Odyssey (and not Draclier, bah!), and then review Nosferatu, Nickel Boys, and We Live In Time. The perfect listening accompaniment to that Celebrations sandwich you're currently making, we reckon. Enjoy.
Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast, the show where we tackle cinema's biggest box office failures and decide if they deserve a second chance. Troy and Brad bid farewell to the cinematic "bombs" of 2024 with an ambitious journey into the American frontier. Their latest viewing: Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, a three-hour epic Western directed by none other than Kevin Costner. Banking on his vision, Costner poured $38 million of his own money into the project, envisioning it as the first chapter in a four-part saga that weaves together the lives of diverse characters navigating the rugged American Midwest. However, whispers of production drama have cast shadows over Horizon's future, raising the question: will it ascend as a masterpiece or be remembered alongside Costner's infamous Waterworld and The Postman? To assist with discussing this epic, the gang welcomes Jose from Watch Skip Plus. As usual, Jose brings his unique take on this box office bomb and also gives an update on the Watch Skip Plus podcast. Horizon: An American Sage - Chapter 1 is directed by Kevin Costner and stars Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Will Patton, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Giovanni Ribisi. Disclaimer: Please see this movie before listening. Spoilers ahead! In this episode Jef, Josh and Brian check out the new thriller by JT Mollner “Strange Darling”. Since this film was very much not on the FM3's radar, Brian scouted it out a couple days earlier and liked it enough to get Jef and Josh onboard with doing an episode even though they knew nothing about it. However Brian knew it checked alot of the things the guys like: a couple of horny folks, a smidge of serial murder, a dash of kink, and a pinch of wtf, all good things that add up to a delicious film. So again check the movie out before listening, you will be thankful you did! Enjoy!

This week's movie has everything - fake teeth on Giovanni Ribisi, a mule performing Shakespeare, Tom Petty, Kevin Costner's irresistible sperm…you read that correctly. This film has a major plot line that revolves around Kevin Costner's sperm. Our beloved Emily St. James joins us to talk about Kevin Costner's colossal 1997 flop, the post-apocalyptic ode to the US Postal Service - THE POSTMAN. There are parts of this movie that are truly moving. There are other parts of this movie where Kevin Costner and Will Patton wrestle in slow motion. It's a fascinating text.
