Comedian, writer and actor Jes Tom has worked on HBO's Our Flag Means Death and voice acted on Adult Swim's Tuca & Bertie. Their solo show, Less Lonely, was featured in the Netflix comedy special Gender Agenda, hosted by Hannah Gadsby. Jes' work plays with their movement through queer worlds since coming out at 13. With seven placements in Capricorn, Jes tells host Isa Nakazawa about their struggle to differentiate between how their audience sees them and their own internal sense of self. Jes also talks about their romantic life and how listening to their body is bringing new flexibility and vulnerability into their relationships.

I was hoping to meet Samantha Irby in person, since podcast interviews are more fun that way and she is a fun person, but she is obstinately committed to Kalamazoo, the small Michigan city plonked equidistant from three Great Lakes. This podcast has not yet reached the point where I can justify the expense of a Courtyard Marriott in Kalamazoo for one interview. So, Zoom it was. Kalamazoo looms so large in Samantha's bio that it has become part of her brand. She doesn't care for the literary cool clubs of New York and Los Angeles. She's an outsider, but loved by insiders. She has a voice all her own—energetic, profane, wacked-out—that is of some place other than where all her peers seem to reside (physically and psychologically). And she is very nice, in that way that obliges everyone to remark on how nice people from the Midwest are. Relatedly, she quit Twitter. Unrelatedly, she has a Substack about Judge Mathis. Actually, on second thought, I am pretty sure that is related. Relatedly, she has a new book of essays called Quietly Hostile, her fifth (“please buy it or I will die,” she implores readers). Relatedly, she writes for TV shows, including Shrill, Tuca & Bertie, and most up-to-datedly, And Just Like That… (the Sex and the City reboot). These are impressive achievements for someone who started her writing career with a MySpace blog in 2008 (“I met this dude who was like, ‘I'm really into writers' and I wanted him to be really into me”). That background, with a love for writing online developed before social media became a Thunderdome, has helped her find freedom in her art, so she can really let loose with foul language and exquisite potty humor. Samantha Irby gets to be who she wants on the internet. Oh no! Our innocent idea to review both parts of two-part episodes has caused dissention! Micah can't stand Bob's Burgers' crisis over whether to sell or not sell Wonder Wharf, while Matsy thinks it's one of the better episodes of an okay series. Fortunately, we can find common ground with The Transformers, though maybe Megatron's jealousy over the Autobots' ability to turn into cars while Decepticons can only be stupid planes is a bit dubious. Plus, Micah heads down the home stretch of My Little Pony, and we are divided once again on which adult cartoon about anthropomorphic animals' depression is better: BoJack Horseman, or Tuca & Bertie. Or Bertie & Tuca. Cartoons in this episode: Bob's Burgers, "Wharf Horse, Part 1 (How Bob Saves/Destroys the Town)" The Transformers, "The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1"

The first thing that I noticed when watching Tuca & Bertie was that there was a LOT going on. Bertie is frantically trying to navigate her magazine job at Conde Nest AND her dream of being professional baker AND her relationship with her loving and sometimes perplexing boyfriend Speckle. Tuca is just trying to navigate what it means to be a responsible adult as she manages sobriety, romance, and a changing relationship with her best friend, Bertie. Beyond that, there's just a lot happening on the screen, like quick visual gags, complex background characters, and a universe where plants sometimes have human bodies and are somewhat mystical. We were excited to find out all about it from our Maximum Fun colleague, Lisa Hanawalt (co-host of Baby Geniuses), who created the show and runs it. Lisa shares her stories of mental health's role in her life from being a shockingly morbid preschooler to panic attacks on the freeway as an adult. We never do get her to explain the plants with human bodies but she does fill us in on the Sex Bugs, which may be both pubic lice AND a touring rock band.Watch Tuca & Bertie Sundays at 11:30 pm on adultswim or online. Tiffany Haddish has had a busy year. Sam talks to Tiffany about her many projects, her hopes and dreams for the entertainment industry, and she tells a wild story about Nicolas Cage.— Watch the full extended version of this interview on YouTube: https://youtu.be/YMESf6UUQx8You can follow us on Twitter @NPRItsBeenAMin and email us at samsanders@npr.org.

The animated series Tuca & Bertie stars two best friends in the classic odd couple tradition: Tiffany Haddish voices free-spirited Tuca and Ali Wong plays anxious Bertie. That setup may sound familiar, but the setting isn't: Tuca and Bertie are birds, and they live in a surreal world pulsing with color, drugs and plant-people. When it debuted back in 2019, Tuca & Bertie developed a rabid fanbase, but Netflix canceled it after one season. Now, it's found a new home on Adult Swim.

It's finally here, the last podcast episode before our hiatus. Noel and Kate do their best to keep it together as they talk through another full week in TV, then head over to the DVD Shelf for one of the quintessential Televerse shows, CBS's lamentably short-lived Limitless. We kick off Our Week in TV with a little comedy, with Noel checking in on Peacock's Girls5eva season one and Kate sharing her thoughts on the Tuca & Bertie premiere. Then we luxuriate in another terrific Top Chef: Portland before celebrating a welcome return on Star Wars: The Bad Batch and heading to our superhero roundup. Loki has fun with jet skis and time travel, Batwoman unveils its new Kate Kane, Superman & Lois continues to drop mythology bombs, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow wants a bigger reaction than maybe we're willing to give it. Afterward, it's time to revisit Limitless—does it hold up as well as we remember? Tune in for our thoughts, then reach out with your takes on this week's TV, Limitless, and whatever strikes your fancy over our hiatus. Thank you to our wonderful guests, friends of the pod, and listeners. We hope you've enjoyed the show, because we've certainly enjoyed making it. Until we're back! Welcome to Episode 158 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things geek and nerd related, provided our DVR's have space and our Netflix accounts are our own and none others. This week, a splinter group of Geeks (Mitch and Matt Orrin) are joined by Evan Johnson at Aunt May's house, to discuss all things geek. Matt Orrin saw Godzilla at a sneak preview, and then raced over to Aunt May's house to talk about it! There shouldn't be any spoilers, though that depends on how sensitive you are. Besides, what kind of spoilers could you really have in a monster film like that? Just know that there are a lot of monsters shown, or mentioned in the movie! The movie was fun and the Geeks talk about those kinds of movies, specifically about how big they must be. For example, how big is King in his movies? Turns out, he has been different sizes in all of the different iterations but we feel if he will face Godzilla in the future, he'd need to be at least 180 ft, or 60 meters. Duck Tales continues to impress and the last episode is no exception to that. It is a Darkwing Duck origin story, but it combines many important elements to it. Struggling aging actor trying to stay relevant in the role that made him, needing control over all aspects of the character and having a hard time adapting to change. In all honesty, this episode deserves to win writing awards because it is incredibly well done! If you haven't seen any other episodes, you should at least watch this episode and you'll be glad you did. Netflix. Can it survive the storm that Disney+ will bring with it? Let's hope because their content has been real great, and we discuss some of their offerings such as Umbrella Academy and Tuca & Bertie. With their acquisition of at least one movie theater, and maybe more in the future, they can set themselves up nicely to still exist in the Disney apocalypse. What kind of seating would they have in their theaters? Did you know that a theater in Sweden has all beds that you can watch movies from? Would you fall asleep? Of course, this topic gets discussed. After Doom Patrol (of course!), we shift to a story about a man and his dog...or multiple dogs! That's right, we're talking about John Wick which might be a favorite Keanu Reeves movie! We talk about our favorite movies of his, and there are so many to choose from! What is your favorite? You can send your feedback and show topic ideas to broadcastgeeks@gmail.com.
