In an era where congregations are shrinking and fewer people engage with faith communities, Michael Plekon's book Ministry Matters: Pastors, Their Life and Work Today (Wipf and Stock, 2024) offers a timely exploration of both the challenges and opportunities facing modern Christian ministry. Through detailed analysis, Plekon traces the factors behind congregational decline while also highlighting inspiring stories of parishes that have successfully reimagined themselves for contemporary times. Our conversation today exemplifies what contemporary theological discussions should encompass - a profound dialogue about the relevance of Christian theology in our time, acknowledging both trauma and pain, while exploring the tremendous opportunity Christianity can offer each of us. This is more than just a book discussion - it's a sustained meditation on the vocation, lives, and work of pastors in our changing times. Michael Plekon is a unique voice in contemporary religious scholarship, bridging academic theology and lived spirituality. Born in Yonkers in 1948, he has dedicated his life to exploring what holiness looks like in modern times through both scholarly work and pastoral experience. As a professor at Baruch College (1977-2017) and an ordained priest who has served in both Western and Eastern Churches, Plekon brings a rare dual perspective to religious studies. His dozen-plus books, including the award-winning "Uncommon Prayer," focus on finding the sacred in everyday life and examining how modern saints - from Dorothy Day to Thomas Merton - navigate faith in contemporary society. Plekon's work is particularly relevant today as he explores the intersection of religious identity, social justice, and community building in an increasingly diverse America. There was new music everywhere. Jazz cats were staging loft concerts in pre-glitz SOHO. The punks and no wavers were holding court on the Lower East Side. Philip Glass and the minimalists were premiering new works and way up in the Bronx, hip hop was coming on strong.Nic was working at New York's MediaSound recording studio where he and co-worker Ramona Lee Jan began to write songs together. Conventions don't plant churches, Churches plant churches His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, Ephesians 3:10 *Mark 1: Their members lived on-mission 19 Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews. 20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. Acts 11:19-20* Their Life on-mission manifested in a burning passion for Christ Their Life on-mission manifested in engaging their culture Their Life on-mission manifested in the hand of the Lord with them The Lord's hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. Acts 11:21 *Mark 2: They were a disciple-making church 22 News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. 25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch. Acts 11:22-26 *Mark 3: They cared for the “Big C” church 27 During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.) 29 The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. 30 This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. Acts 11: 27-30 *Mark 4: They had a beautiful multi-ethnicity 1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas,Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene (, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. Acts 13:1 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” Revelation 7:9 *Mark 5: They practiced Spirit-led sending 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. Acts 13:2-3

Of course, to get to the next level you need a plan, but you also need the time to execute on that plan. If you are constantly working IN your business in the day-to-day running of things, you won't have the time to work ON your business and develop the systems, roles, and processes you need to reach your goals. As the owner and visionary of your company, it's your “job” to focus on doing the things that will really move the needle for your business. The Moving Mastery Podcast with Louis Massaro

In this episode of The Moving Mastery Podcast, Louis Massaro shares some things you need to be doing in your business now as we approach the off-season.  You'll learn: Why you must have a plan to transition out of moving season  What you can do to work ON your business this winter, not IN your business How to get ahead and stay ahead going into 2023 After a busy summer season it's important to go into the fourth quarter of the year with a plan.  Things are slowing down and it can be easy to start to panic about booking fewer jobs and fearing that your revenue will go down. But this is just the nature of the moving business and the off-season can be a time of great progress and optimization in your company as well. In this episode of the Moving Mastery Podcast, I help you come up with a plan for the 4th quarter of 2022 and I give you some things that you need to be doing now in your business as we approach the off-season. I like to refer to winter as Scaling Season, it's the time to work ON your business, not IN your business. Taking advantage of the slower months to really get your processes and systems dialed in is huge. Having your off-season marketing plan ready and making sure your sales process is on point will make all the difference in keeping your calendar full of booked jobs during the winter. Also, reviewing your P&L (Profit and Loss) statement the correct way and setting some post-season objectives will really get the needle moving for you this winter.
