In this episode of One Symphony, conductor Devin Patrick Hughes interviews acclaimed pianist and composer Marina Arsenijevic to discuss her journey that led to her latest album, Chopin Obsessions. Arsenijevic shared insights into her upbringing in former Yugoslavia, the influences that shaped her musical style, and her unwavering commitment to promoting unity through diversity. Marina Arsenijevic is as an inspiration to artists and audiences alike. Her journey of unity through diversity reminds us of the transformative power of music and its ability to bring people together, even in the most challenging of times.  Growing up in a communist country, Arsenijevic was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, from Western pop to traditional Balkan music, which would later play a significant role in shaping her unique compositional style.  As the disintegration of Yugoslavia began in the early 1990s, Arsenijevic found solace in her music. She recognized the power of music to transcend borders and bring people together, even in the face of conflict and adversity. “I wanted to show our common humanity through history, culture, through music, so I started to blend diverse melodies and rhythms to unite us,” she explained. Arsenijevic's commitment to promoting unity through diversity led to the creation of her PBS special, Marina at West Point: Unity Through Diversity. The concert, which featured the West Point Chorus and Band, showcased a diverse range of musical styles and pieces from Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to Freddie Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody" alongside Arsenijevic's own compositions. The special aimed to share Arsenijevic's message with a wider audience. During the interview, Arsenijevic also discussed her latest album, Chopin Obsessions. She discussed the influence of Chopin's relationships with aristocratic women on his compositions and the evolution of his musical style throughout his career. Arsenijevic also drew parallels between Chopin and other composers of the Romantic Era.  When asked about her advice for young composers and pianists, Arsenijevic emphasized the importance of using one's own cultural background and traditional music. She encouraged artists to explore the melodies and rhythms of their heritage and incorporate them into their compositions.    MARINA ARSENIJEVIC is an international award-winning pianist and composer, star of the Emmy-nominated Public Television program, “Marina at West Point: Unity through Diversity”which has been broadcast to more than 170 Million viewers on PBS Stations all across the country. Marina created the program and performed with the 120-member joint ensemble of the West Point Band and West Point Cadet Glee Club. The Concert was recorded live at West Point's historic Eisenhower Hall and as of 2020 become one of the longest running single concerts at PBS TV Network. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony. The return of Jay Bakker, punk-rock pastor of Revolution Church, author, speaker, and son of famed televangelists Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye (Bakker) Messner. Jay blasts open the idea of a right/wrong side of the partisan divide, arguing for a radical and very literal acceptance of "Love your Enemy." It's an energetic adventure through the Book of Galatians, and the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, John Hume, Gahndi, Paul Tillich, and other thinkers and philosophers as we discuss how those on the right AND the left turn their beliefs into law for the others to follow, instead of trusting Grace and finding common ground. A fantastic and much-needed talk for our times!

It is tricky on whether to treat this as a stand-alone talk, or part of the Galatians series because it can easily be both. And it sort of is. You'll get what we mean when you listen. This talk focuses mostly on just one verse in Galatians—Galatians 2.38. We feel it's a good verse for how divided we are now. In this talk Jay discusses how it trying to bring people together takes patience. We have to let go of the feeling to want instant gratification, and brace for a longer haul. Patience and persistence. We have to ask ourselves who we love when we love God. In this talk Jay calls contradiction a beautiful truth. And he's not wrong. Diversity is also a beautiful truth in that regard too. Unity through diversity seems like a contradiction, but really diversity is what is needed to have unity. Diversity of people, and diversity of the mind. Compromise and Tolerance are not bad words. They are strength and they are love. And it is all of these things together that tell us what fights are worth having, and how to fight them with what's left after we die to ourselves. This talk was given on March 5, 2024 from Seattle, Washington.www.facebook.com/revolutionchurchmnwww.revolutionchurch.com/donatewww.youtube.com/revolutionbroadcasting@jaybakker@revolution1994@revolution94 Hosted on Acast. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul talks about how the church is designed to function with unity in diversity. Even though those ideas seem to contradict each other, Paul shows how true unity comes through a diversity of spiritual gifts and diversity of people all working together in the church body. In other words, the church needs YOU, and you need the church! We encounter threats to our unity through diversity in multiple ways: uniformity which creates a monster, not a body, self-focus which pulls us away from proper focus, and hierarchies which subtly fracture the church. Pastor Julie walks us through this idea and how we can avoid threats.

HUMILITY is the key to a purposeful and successful Christian life. A humble attitude gains gains latitude both in God's eyes and in the eyes of the world. God has created us all differently-with different gives and from different cultures. When we come together from all cultures into one body of Christ, we will be humbled-and God will use us and lift us up. When we are prideful and sin God humbles us out of His love for us. In the end-Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord, and He will life you up, higher and higher, and He will life you up!

As many churches today continue to be torn apart over issues of personality, programs and power; Paul's words still ring true. If division and quarreling is left unchecked it can destroy a church body, a churches witness and their ministry to the local community, leaving individual Christians as spiritual casualties in the process. Join us Paul "names names" and calls out the various groups on their real agenda by reinforcing the power of unity that is only found in the Cross. From 1st Corinthians 1:10-17
