Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay hit listeners with a twist they won't see coming, because it kinda doesn't make sense, while talking about the crime caper classic 'The Usual Suspects.' Andy kicks it off by telling a story about when he wound up in police custody after attending a Grateful Dead show, and similar to Benecio del Toro's infamous fart, he couldn't hold it in while standing in a police lineup. Then the fellas discuss a movie that put handicapped people on film back at least 15 years, and debate whether this movie that is noted for its labyrinthine storytelling still holds up. It features an uneven cast, but there are undeniably great turns from the likes of Gabriel Byrne, character actor Pete Postelthwaite, and Kevin Spacey's duplicitous criminal mastermind. The true star of this however is actor Christopher McQuarrie, but the guys have trouble figuring out why Spacey's Verbal Kint needed to tell lies that were structured around the postings on a police bulletin board. Much like this '90s banger, you'll be talking about — and scratching your head — well after this episode ends.

"The Usual Suspects" (1995), directed by Bryan Singer, was a neo-noir crime thriller that gained widespread acclaim for its intricate plot and unexpected twists. The production of the film involved assembling a talented ensemble cast, including Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, and Chazz Palminteri. The screenplay, penned by Christopher McQuarrie, intricately weaved a narrative that kept audiences guessing until the final moments. The film's nonlinear storytelling and unreliable narrator added layers of complexity to the plot, requiring careful coordination in both writing and directing to maintain the suspense. The production also faced challenges due to budget constraints, requiring the team to maximize creativity in their storytelling and cinematography. One of the film's defining features was Kevin Spacey's exceptional performance as Verbal Kint, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film's intense atmosphere and memorable characters were complemented by John Ottman's evocative score. "The Usual Suspects" not only marked a turning point in Singer's career but also became a defining entry in the crime thriller genre, known for its intricate narrative structure and the legendary twist ending. The film's success led to critical acclaim, numerous awards, and a lasting impact on popular culture. Off-schedule, but on-topic, we bring you the first of two Illuminati episodes to wrap up this epic series. This one's the story of the actual, real-life 18th-century group whose brief but influential existence led them, through a bizarre series of twists and turns, to become the "big bad" of all conspiracy thinking. The final boss, if you will. The Kaiser Soze hiding behind the Masons' Verbal Kint (spoilers, we guess). We have a new interviewee, Terry Melanson, the man who wrote the most comprehensive book on the structure of the Illuminati in recent years (at least in English), as well as some returning guests. Hope you like it. Back as soon as we can with the final chapter. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.

In 1995 neither Christopher McQuarrie or Bryan Singer were big names, but The Usual Suspects changed that over night. One would set up the X-men universe and give us the Queen biopic that had been sitting in development hell for years. The other would write some of the best action scripts around (and coming soon), then steer the monster that is the latter Mission Impossible films. But its the ending that keeps people returning to this classic (despite/because of Kevin Spacey's fall from grace). This film gave us one of cinema's most amazing plot twists, because everyone in 1995 was asking either "what's in the box?" or "Who is Keyser Soze?".So what happens when you get two teenagers - one who won't admit she's wrong, and one who hates character movies - and show them an amazing character study that proves you were wrong right up to the last 3 minutes!!!Listen to us argue and discuss THE USUAL SUSPECTS.EnjoySupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kwawwpodcast)
Week Two: Breakthrough Title: Releasing Breakthroughs Bible: Mark 5:1 - 20 “The Greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.” Verbal Kint, The Usual Suspects “Releasing Breakthroughs happen to Proclaim Jesus Power!” Mark 5:1 – 20 (NLT) So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes. 2 When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain. 4 Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones. 6 When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. 7 With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don't torture me!” 8 For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.” 9 Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?” And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.” 10 Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. 11 There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. 12 “Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.” 13 So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. 14 The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened. 15 A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. 16 Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs. 17 And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone.18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. 19 But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” 20 So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them. Satan 2 Corinthians 4:4 (NLT) 4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don't understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God. Ephesians 2:1 – 3 (NLT) Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God's anger, just like everyone else. Society Luke 8:29 (NLT) 29 For Jesus had already commanded the evil spirit to come out of him. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even when he was placed under guard and put in chains and shackles, he simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness, completely under the demon's power. Mark 5:5 (NLT) 5 Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones. Savior Luke 19:10 (NLT) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Story Mark 5:19 – 20 (NLT) 19 But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” 20 So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them Romans 10:14 – 15 (NLT) 14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!” “Who do you need to tell today about your releasing breakthrough? Who needs to hear that Jesus has the power to change their life?”

In 1995, Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie teamed up to bring us the academy award winning film, The Usual Suspects. Responsible for skyrocketing several careers, The Usual Suspects dazzled audiences with the catchy dialogue, interesting characters, and twist ending. Made for just $6 million dollars, this movie made back around $35 million and has established itself as an American classic. But does it hold up? Listen as Jon, Colin and Brent give their testimony on this mystery film and see if they are ahead of the game in determining the true identify of Keyser Soze before his release, or if smooth talking Verbal Kint can keep the bull going long enough to dazzle, distract, and dumbfound the boys, getting away clean to rejoin his barbershop quartet in Skokie, Illinois

SPOILER ALERT! No, that's actually what we're talking about in this episode. As social media becomes more ubiquitous - Facebook and Twitter feeds will be implanted straight into our eyes by 2025 - it's harder to keep "shocking" twists shocking. You practically have to live like a hermit and NOT LOOK AT YOUR PHONE FOR HOURS if you don't want those jerks on the East Coast to ruin all the fun of the "Riverdale" season finale. So while we're talking about Spoiler Alerts this week, we won't spoil our choices (except for after the jump). Trust us: We wouldn't dare ruin the surprise that Michael chose all spoilers from Korean soap opera as his picks. And definitely not the fact that Jeff is actually Richard's father. That would just be awful.
"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was convincing the world that he didn't exist." As it is with Verbal Kint in the Usual Suspects, the true evil is just under your nose for the entire film. He engenders himself to the detectives with requests for help, saying he likes cops, spinning yarns, all to distract from the monster beneath. This is much the same way that the government presents itself as a provider of safety and security, what is needed for a civil society - yet it is the largest transgressor upon life and liberty; creating the most pollution, destruction, mayhem and murder in the history of the world. So, at least that's our take on the message from the Usual Suspects. REFLECTION QUOTES “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” ~Sun Tzu, 6th Century B.C. Chinese military strategist “Know your enemy!” ~Rage Against the Machine, seminal rap-core band “Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance. The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which, a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of. An apparently trivial indulgence in lust or anger today is the loss of a ridge or railway line or bridgehead from which the enemy may launch an attack otherwise impossible.” ~C.S. Lewis, 20th Century Christian philosopher and writer “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world he didn't exist.” ~Verbal Kint, main character in the 1995 film, The Usual Suspects “Worldly wisdom knows what distress and weakness and failure are, but it does not know the godlessness of man. And so it does not know that man is destroyed only by his sin and can be healed only by forgiveness. Only the Christian knows this…in the presence of a Christian brother I can dare to be a sinner. The Christian brother knows when I come to him: here is a sinner like myself, a godless man who wants to confess and yearns for God's forgiveness.” ~Dietrich Bonhoeffer, 20th Century German theologian executed for participating in an assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler “To this condition is a sin-entangled so oft-times reduced in looking for relief; it can discover nothing but this, that God is able, and can, if he graciously please, relieve and acquit him. All other support or springs of relief are shut up or hid from him… And this sometimes proves an anchor to a tossed soul; which, if it do not give rest and peace, yet saves it from the rock of despair. Here it abides until light more and more breaks forth upon it.” ~John Owen, 17th Century English Puritan pastor, theologian and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford SERMON PASSAGE Psalm 143 (NIV) A psalm of David. 1 Lord, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief. 2 Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you. 3 The enemy pursues me, he crushes me to the ground; he makes me dwell in the darkness like those long dead. 4 So my spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is dismayed. 5 I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done. 6 I spread out my hands to you; I thirst for you like a parched land. 7 Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. 8 Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. 9 Rescue me from my enemies, Lord, for I hide myself in you. 10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. 11 For your name's sake, Lord, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble. 12 In your unfailing love, silence my enemies; destroy all my foes, for I am your servant.
