"The Usual Suspects" (1995), directed by Bryan Singer, was a neo-noir crime thriller that gained widespread acclaim for its intricate plot and unexpected twists. The production of the film involved assembling a talented ensemble cast, including Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, and Chazz Palminteri. The screenplay, penned by Christopher McQuarrie, intricately weaved a narrative that kept audiences guessing until the final moments. The film's nonlinear storytelling and unreliable narrator added layers of complexity to the plot, requiring careful coordination in both writing and directing to maintain the suspense. The production also faced challenges due to budget constraints, requiring the team to maximize creativity in their storytelling and cinematography. One of the film's defining features was Kevin Spacey's exceptional performance as Verbal Kint, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film's intense atmosphere and memorable characters were complemented by John Ottman's evocative score. "The Usual Suspects" not only marked a turning point in Singer's career but also became a defining entry in the crime thriller genre, known for its intricate narrative structure and the legendary twist ending. The film's success led to critical acclaim, numerous awards, and a lasting impact on popular culture. Kint recounts the events leading up to a disastrous heist orchestrated by the mysterious criminal mastermind Keyser Söze. As Kint weaves a tale involving a group of criminals with colorful nicknames—Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), Michael McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Fred Fenster (Benicio del Toro), and Todd Hockney (Kevin Pollak)—the narrative twists and turns, blurring the lines between truth and deception. With each revelation, the layers of the intricate plot unravel, leading to an unexpected and mind-bending climax that challenges perceptions of reality and identity. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

On this week's show, we're putting on our fencing masks and telling tall tales as we talk about 2000's Urban Legends: Final Cut! Why are these urban legends all kinda weak? How come nobody is really that bothered by all these bodies piling up? Did they just spin a wheel to decide who the killer was? And how many hokey plot devices can you really cram into one film? All this, plus scuba divers, severed heads, a baby train and we contemplate a trip to Hell via New Jersey!  Urban Legends: Final Cut was directed by John Ottman, and stars Jennifer Morrison, Loretta Devine, Matthew Davies, Joseph Lawrence, Eva Mendes, Jessica Cauffiel, Anson Mount, Anthony Anderson, Michael Bacall and Hart Bochner. Bad With Numbers is a weekly show about questionable movie sequels, all the way from Toronto, Canada. It's hosted by Neth Knowles, Laura Medeiros, Rodey Gozum and Megan Swaine. Theme song by Audiopop.  Artwork by Laura Medeiros.  Find us on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube or drop us an email at bwnpod@gmail.com.

On this week's episode, the boys acknowledge the anniversary of D-Day with a movie that has nothing to do with D-Day outside of a strong desire to kill Hitler! Join us as we talk about "Valkyrie", the plot(s) to kill the man who truly put the dick in dictator, and the accompanying score by the multi-talented John Ottman! A note: Just like on the Passion of the Christ episode, we're going to brush up against some awfully serious content for a comedy podcast. We do our best to be both respectful and funny, but as ever, if we've failed in either of those endeavours, please forgive us. Fuck fascism!

Bryan Singer's film “Apt Pupil” was actually the second time the film was under production; the first attempt had several casting issues and when it finally started shooting, ended up running out of funds, killing the project. Perhaps that was a sign that Stephen King's novella was a bit too tricky to make correctly. It's a very dark story that doesn't really have any likable characters in it. Singer's 1998 adaptation toned much of the violence from the book down, but also took a different angle with the ending that many people, including us, felt didn't work. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we finish our epic Stephen King adaptation series with Singer's “Apt Pupil.” We talk about what worked well in the book, what works in the film, and where the film may have gone wrong. We discuss the wonderful performances by Ian McKellan and the late Brad Renfro and look at what they bring to the film, despite its problems. We chat about Singer and some of his regulars, notably John Ottman, his composer/editor. And we circle back to the Nazi elements within the film and what Singer may have been after with this story, as well as other films in his career. It's an interesting but flawed film that we have a great conversation about. Check it out!* * *Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! Have we been here before? Because Rafer and Kristen are feeling some serious deja vu. It's all due to the release of the third Sandler-Barrymore romantic comedy and the seventh film in the X-Men franchise. "Blended" brings Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore back together as a mis-matched pair of single parents, on a joint vacation in South Africa. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" brings the X-Men back to 1973, to stop the war on mutants before it starts. Giving Rafer and Kristen some behind-the-scenes insights into the making of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" is John Ottman, who's both the composer and the editor of the film. A very special thanks to Jay Cowit, who performed and wrote music on this week's podcast.
