It's winter here in the US, and it is cold (well, it should be anyway. Damn climate change). And who is colder than Victor Fries, the villain known as Dr. Freeze. Wait, it's Mr. Freeze? Isn't he at least a Ph.D if not an MD? So Dr. Doom can call himself a doctor with his honorary degree from Latveria U, but Freeze is just a mister? Well, that's something. Anyway, Freeze was a pretty generic cold villain until he was redefined for Batman: The Animated Series. And since then, that particular origin has made tis way into the comics, with different variations. This week, we're reading three different versions of that modern Freeze origin. One comes from Will's favorite, Paul Dini, one is from the New 52 and one is part of DC's recent One Bad Day one-shots. Batman: The Animated Series – I Got Batman In My Basement/Heart of Ice/Cat and the Claw Part 1 & 2   I've Got Batman In My Basement   During a fight with Batman over a stolen Fabergé egg, the Penguin incapacitates Batman with poison gas. The Dark Knight is rescued by a teenage amateur detective named Sherman Grant and his friend Roberta, who hide Batman in Sherman's basement long enough for him to recover before the Penguin finds them.   Heart of Ice   Bitter scientist Victor Fries, as Mr. Freeze, attacks several divisions of GothCorp, each time stealing a piece for a secret weapon he intends to build. Batman investigates the connections, and discovers that the start of Freeze's vendetta against GothCorp was a bitter falling out between Fries and GothCorp's CEO, Ferris Boyle (Mark Hamill), during which Boyle almost killed Fries (mutating him into Freeze) and presumably killed Fries' terminally ill wife, Nora. Batman must find a way to bring Boyle to justice before Freeze carries out his revenge.  This episode won the 1993 daytime Emmy for most Outstanding Script.   The Cat and the Claw Part 1   Batman encounters a new cat burglar calling herself Catwoman, and around the same time, meets a woman named Selina Kyle (as Bruce Wayne), to whom he is visibly attracted. In the comics, the Monitor was essential to Crisis on Infinite Earths. Created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez in 1982's The New Teen Titans #21, the character was established to set up the events of Crisis. He is billions of years old, born as the living embodiment of the universe's positive matter; as such, he is the natural enemy of the Anti-Monitor, a being of anti-matter. Bruce Wayne, Lucius Fox and Alfred Pennyworth search through the secret files on Thomas Wayne's newly fixed computer with the goal of finding a clue to who killed him and Martha Wayne, and why. Barbara Kean tracks down James Gordon. Claiming to be cured of her insanity, she tries to reconcile with Gordon but to no avail. Gordon discovers that the person who contracted Patrick Malone to kill Thomas and Martha Wayne is known as "the Philosopher". Bruce and Alfred track a lead from Thomas Wayne's computer and find Karen Jennings, a former Blackgate inmate who was experimented on at Wayne Enterprises by the Philosopher. She offers to identify the Philosopher, but the Philosopher sends Victor Fries to kill her. Following Jennings' death, Lucius Fox does further research and discovers that Hugo Strange is the Philosopher. After many failed attempts, Strange finally succeeds in resurrecting someone from the dead: Theo Galavan.

Upon learning that Nora is being sent to the medical wing at Arkham Asylum, Victor Fries builds an armoured suit. Fries arrives at the asylum and, after fighting through security and the police, he manages to escape with Nora. Elsewhere, Bruce Wayne researches a lead, believing to have discovered that the man who killed his parents isPatrick "Matches" Malone. James Gordon deduces that Victor Fries will return to his home laboratory in order to freeze Nora and the police surround Fries' home to find that Gordon is correct. In the laboratory, Nora blames herself for the deaths that Fries caused. Fries attempts to cryogenically freeze her, only to learn that Nora switched the formula when he wasn't looking. Nora dies as a result. Distraught by Nora's death, Fries attempts to take his armour off so that he can surrender to the police. In the process, he accidentally cryogenically freezes himself. Fries is publicly pronounced dead, despite having survived the process. Fries wakes up in Indian Hill to discover that he can no longer survive outside of subzero temperatures. Fries meets Professor Strange, who offers him an alliance as a fellow scientist. Fries states that he wishes he died with Nora, but Strange assures Fries that this could be a new beginning for him.

Mr. Freeze was a very moving and emotional start after the hiatus.  We learn very quickly that Victor Fries will do ANYTHING for his wife. Mr. Freeze is perhaps one of the most fascinating villains in the Batman Universe. He is detached, inexpressive, and like his name implies, cold. And yet, Mr. Freeze is inexplicably lifelike and relatable. "Heart of Ice" is arguably one of the most influential stories from Batman: The Animated Series because of this well-written origin story. After of the sudden, devastating loss of his wife, Nora, scientist Victor Fries transforms into Mr. Freeze, a vengeful killer, willing to harm anyone who steps in his way. But there is more to this tragic story. Under the subzero suit is a person burdened with unrelenting pain and sorrow. In this episode, we discuss the difficulty of dealing with loss and letting go, and explain how being "frozen in grief" is a very real thing.
