In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar sits down with Dani Larkin to talk about Next Of Kin — a deeply emotive record shaped by time, patience, and a renewed sense of creative clarity. Released on 23 January 2026, Next Of Kin marks a bold progression in Larkin's sound and vision. Co-produced with Ruth O'Mahony Brady, the album expands her acclaimed storytelling into a cinematic, emotionally rich landscape that explores life's most universal milestones — from birth and coming of age to love, loss, and acceptance. Structured as a trilogy, the record moves through distinct phases. Part I traces a journey from darkness toward revelation and youth. Part II sits in the complexity of adulthood, weaving love, fear, doubt, courage, and hope through expansive orchestral arrangements and intimate songwriting. Part III closes with a sense of resolution and homecoming, culminating in the poignant farewell Danny Boy. In this conversation, Larkin reflects on how releasing her debut Notes For A Maiden Warrior during the COVID era shaped her outlook, and why Next Of Kin feels like a true arrival moment. She talks about patience, self-acceptance, and the importance of creating space — both personally and creatively — between records. She also discusses the album's lead single End Of It All, a striking and urgent track that blends industrial drum beats, raw guitar, and a haunting reimagining of Row, Row, Row Your Boat — capturing the contradictions, anxiety, and fragile hope of modern life. Award-winning chef and author Gabrielle Hamilton came from a family of unsentimental non-conformists. They had charisma, but there was brutality and deep rifts too. In her new memoir “Next of Kin”, Hamilton comes to terms with her family with intense honesty and raucous humor.

Ok, so Andy's car blows up and she walks away unscathed? No smoke stains? Wig still in place? No body aches? Just up and ready for the next scene. Meanwhile, Rich shows up with a bat. And all for nothing. People are little shook, but not shook enough. Andy is concerned about her car. Everyone goes back to the house for the barbeque like nothing ever happened. I'm concerned how Mr. keys is at the BBQ as a friend while Fatima knows that he's Zack's father, yet she's able to hold it for the sake of the cookout. After the explosion, why were people concerned about how Danny was so melancholy? Who knew that Tony was a YN? Fatima sitting at the table smacking on a chicken bone while Andy is at the table worried about her car. She suspects that it's Doctor Cruise, but it could Penelope, or Jordan, or Gary. So, it wasjust crazy. The good doctor is not quite of the woods. I am talking about Dr. Vaughn. We still don't really know his angle. I already know that this season is about to be different because Karen and Aaron left to go to Settle to start a new life. Now that everyone I informed that Sabrina is in a coma, they are all at the hospital distraught…I am mentally preparing for the new Sistas. And to think that Sabrina was finally going to forgive Rich and get back with him. We will have to see how this thing pan out. RIP Sabrina. Thank you for being a real one.

For two and a half years, journalist and author Casey Beros was the carer for her father as he passed away from cancer. Caring for someone you love is one of the hardest — and most profoundly human — experiences we will ever face. And yet, most of us arrive at that moment unprepared, overwhelmed, and often deeply alone. In this episode we sit down with journalist, author, and health communicator Casey Beros, whose book Next of Kin shines a light on what it really means to step into the role of carer. Drawing from her own experience caring for her dad, Casey shares the raw truths of navigating a complex health system, surviving the emotional rollercoaster of care, and finding love and meaning in the midst of loss. We explore: ✨ Why caring, grieving, and loving are some of the hardest — and most important — human acts ✨ The hidden weight carers carry, from burnout to the “love drug” that keeps them going ✨ Practical ways families can navigate medical, legal, and financial challenges ✨ How grief can transform into meaning — and why conversations about death can be some of the most life-affirming we'll ever have. This conversation is for anyone who has cared, is caring, or one day will care for someone they love. It's a powerful reminder that while none of us can avoid loss, we can choose how we meet it — with courage, compassion, and connection. Tune in and let Casey's story remind you: you are not alone.

Have you ever found yourself suddenly in the role of caring for someone you love, without a roadmap for what that really means? In this episode of It's a Mindset, I sit down with Casey Beros, award-winning health journalist, bestselling author, keynote speaker, and one of Australia's leading medical MCs. For two decades, Casey has been translating complex science into practical strategies that empower everyday people to live healthier, happier lives. But it was becoming the primary carer for her beloved dad that changed everything. That experience inspired her heartfelt new book, Next of Kin, a compassionate and practical “what to expect when you're expecting to care for someone you love.” Part memoir, part guide, it's a much-needed companion for navigating the emotional and often overwhelming toll of care. As a mum of two herself, Casey understands firsthand the unique strain of the sandwich generation, caring for ageing parents while raising children and trying to maintain a sense of self. She brings honesty, humour, and deep compassion to this conversation. For me, this episode was a reminder of how important it is to prepare for the inevitable, the loss of our parents, and how caring can challenge everything from our routines to our sense of self. My biggest takeaway? The most meaningful thing we can do is spend time with the people we love, and when we align to one clear purpose, it sustains us even when times are tough. Key Episode Takeaways The toll of care not only on the carer, but on those around them as well. Why it can feel impossible to maintain wellbeing routines while caring for someone with acute needs. The most meaningful time is always the time spent with those you love. How having one thing that is uniquely yours, your purpose, can create greater alignment and sustain you through difficult seasons. About the Guest Casey Beros is an award-winning health journalist, bestselling author, keynote speaker and one of Australia's leading medical MC's. She has spent the last 20 years asking our brightest minds how we can all live happier, healthier lives. Along the way she found some answers, and she shares them with the Australian public in a way that's both steeped in science and delightfully entertaining. She has hosted TV programs for the ABC and Channel 10, and written for many of our leading digital publications. She has a superhuman ability to translate complex science into practical and actionable strategies that empower the most important person in the health journey - you. Being the primary carer for her beloved Dad was the catalyst for Casey to write her new book Next Of Kin - a 'what to expect when you're expecting' to become a carer for someone you love. A heartfelt companion, it's a practical and compassionate guide to navigating the complex, emotional and challenging world of care. Mum to two little girls, Casey is Australia's self-proclaimed parallel parking champion and knows the words to more pop songs than is probably normal. Bounded by I-55 to the west and Highway 14 to the south, the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area, created by the United States Congress in 2009 represents a distinctive cultural landscape shaped by the dynamic intersection of Appalachian and Delta cultures, an intersection which has produced a powerful concentration of national cultural icons from the King of Rock'n'Roll Elvis Presley, First Lady of Country Music Tammy Wynette, blues legend Howlin' Wolf, Civil Rights icons Ida B. Wells-Barnett and James Meredith, America's favorite playwright Tennessee Williams, and Nobel-Laureate William Faulkner. The stories of the Mississippi Hills are many and powerful, from music and literature, to Native American and African American heritage, to the Civil War. The Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area supports the local institutions that preserve and share North Mississippi's rich history. Episode 220: Mystics in Bali (1981), Next of Kin (1982).
Episode 162 is here, and this week we look back at a movie with one of the best casts of the 80s....oddly, it's also a movie that many will not have seen, or even heard of for that matter. Which is a shame of course as, despite its faults, this hillbillies vs mobsters flick is a lot of fun with Liam Neeson giving a particularly eye catching performance as Swayze's hillbilly brother, Briar.
The episode brings a riveting discussion about the final installment of the Paranormal Activity series, its backstory, the impact of COVID-19 on its production, and Ariel's passion for the "found footage" format. The hosts also share intriguing behind-the-scenes insights, including the studio's unique priority list for permissible movie content. After six movies and diminishing returns, it was time for a change of scenery, and that's what Next of Kin delivers, as the action shifts to Amish country, leaving Toby, Katie, and Kristie behind. We talk the new location, the new mystery, the odd choice to dump this straight to streaming, and whether you can really call this a "found footage movie"-did they try something different or just fail at sticking to the format?
