Tony revisits the red carpet for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, the two‑part animated epic directed by Jay Oliva and adapted from Frank Miller's seminal 1986 comic. Released in 2012 and 2013, the films depict a dystopian Gotham where an aging, battle‑scarred Bruce Wayne, now 55, is forced out of retirement as the city collapses under violence, corruption, and moral decay. Conversations with David Selby (Commissioner Gordon), Jay Oliva, and legendary voice director Andrea Romano capture the creative energy behind a story that reshaped how audiences understand Batman — not as a symbol of youth and invincibility, but as a man confronting time, trauma, and the consequences of a lifetime of war. Setting the Stage: Gotham in Decline Ten years after Batman's disappearance, Gotham is overrun by the Mutants, a violent gang whose rise symbolizes societal collapse. Bruce Wayne, haunted by the death of Jason Todd, struggles with aging, guilt, and the fading relevance of his mission. The film's dystopian tone reflects Miller's original intent: a world where institutions fail, heroes fracture, and morality becomes a battlefield. The Dark Knight Returns is a cornerstone of modern superhero storytelling — a meditation on identity, legacy, and the human cost of heroism.  SAVE 17% ON PLUS

In honor of Batman Begins (2005) turning 20, we're releasing the classic Bald Move coverage on the film. Special thanks to Ethan and Allison for commissioning Batman Begins, the first in the Nolanverse Batman trilogy (you can see our podcast on Batman: The Dark Knight here).  This is a fantastic comic book movie that also happens to be a fantastic film in it's own right.  We love the fusion of gritty realism with the strong emotional core and exploration of Bruce Wayne and his struggle to walk the narrow path between justice and vengeance.  Excellent casting, excellent performances, and while the third act perhaps leaves something to be desired in light of a decade of super hero movies continually trying to outdo themselves in terms of spectacle, the movie holds up like a champ and is an undeniable part of what makes the sequel work so superbly. We're getting near 200 episodes of this show, and many of those episodes have been experiences where we discover fun, fascinating comics. And then there is this week. Patreon backer and friend (?) of the show John Wickham made his pick for his return, and he decided to pick three stories related to the Joker and Joker related characters that could make it to the bottom of the Big Board. He he succeeded. The New 52 Harley, Joker's Daughter and her nonsense underground kingdom and Three Jokers all appear, all are terrible, and one takes it's spot in the opposite of rarified air at the very bottom of the Big Board. Try to guess which one. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Harley Lives! (Detective Comics V.2 #23.2) Down Under (Catwoman V.4 #22-24 & 26, Batman: The Dark Knight v.2 #23.4) Batman: The Three Jokers #1-3 Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

It's the 50th regular episode of the podcast, and to celebrate, we're finally doing a deep dive on a comic that helped ushered in the Iron Age and still stands as one of its most enduring accomplishments: Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight (better known in collected form as The Dark Knight Returns), aided and abetted by inker Klaus Janson, colorist Lynn Varley, and letterer John Costanza. But after 39 years of attention from the comics industry and mainstream media alike, is there anything left to say about arguably the most celebrated Batman comic ever published? Rather than try to reduce this landmark comic to a tidy message or thesis about “what it means,” we embrace the glorious messiness of DKR. By examining all the complexities and contradictions of the series, we try to foster an honest and true appreciation of this landmark work. Thanks to everyone who's listened to us over the past two years and 50 episodes. There's a lot more great stuff to come.
