Fast jeder Camper hat sich wohl schon einmal mit diesem Thema beschäftigt. Wie transportiere ich die Fahrräder mit dem Camper ? Was, wenn ich gleich 5 Räder für die gesamte Familie mit in den Urlaub nehmen möchte ? Oder gar den Motorroller ? Oder Fahrräder und Motorroller ? Gemeinsam mit Patrick Torbecke-Renzelmann von Sawiko haben wir die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten des Transportes besprochen und dabei auch Begriffe wie Achslast und Nutzlast erklärt. In der neuesten Episode des Abgefahrn Podcasts sind Axel, Jan und Thomas wieder auf Reisen und erleben spannende Abenteuer mit ihren Wohnmobilen. Axel berichtet von einer aufregenden Wohnmobilpanne auf der Autobahn. Trotz der stressigen Situation sorgt der RMV Pannenschutz "Spezial-Reisemobil-Schutzbrief" für schnelle Hilfe. Außerdem hat Axel das CP-Plus-System eingebaut und erklärt, warum er sich für einen Befüllfilter für die bevorstehende Reise nach Italien entschieden hat. Jan erzählt von seinem Aufenthalt an der Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (NOK) in Hamburg, wo er im Fährhaus Fischerhütte übernachtet hat. Der Wohnmobilstellplatz direkt am NOK bietet eine wunderbare Aussicht auf den Schiffsverkehr, die über eine Webseite live verfolgt werden kann. Maria, die Rangerin, und Knut, der Physiker und Jugendherbergsvater, sorgen für eine herzliche Atmosphäre. Dank eines Ampelsystems ist eine Reservierung nicht notwendig, Die Reise führt Jan weiter an die Ostsee, wo er direkt am Meer übernachtete, leider jedoch eine nasse Wiese vorfand. Beim Hafengeburtstag in Hamburg musste er wegen der schwierigen Stellplatzsituation den bekannten Wohnmobilhafen ausweichen, konnte aber die Einlaufparade und das Feuerwerk genießen. Außerdem gibt es ein kurzes Interview mit Loef vom OMR Festival. Auf der Rückfahrt über den Dümmer See berichtet Jan von den Polarlichtern, die allerdings nur per Kamera eingefangen werden kann . Axel reiste nach Luxemburg und Enkirch. Er besuchte die Südeifel und die Irreler Wasserfälle. In Enkirch (Teaser: Podcasttreffen) erklomm er den Mont Royal, besuchte den Cyberbunker und genoss den Blick vom Rottenblick. Vor Pfingsten musste der Platz jedoch wegen Hochwassergefahr geräumt werden. Hoffen wir darauf das Mitte Juni wieder alles trocken ist! Zum Schluss erzählt Thomas von seiner Reise nach Tolkamer in den Niederlanden. Stationen waren Helenawerf und Roermond. Er berichtet auch von einer ähnlichen Tour zum Gardasee im letzten Jahr, die in Episode 49 zu hören war. WE ARE THE WHEELY SERIOUS PROJECT!But who are we? Where did this idea come from? And what is it all about?An Engineer (Joshua Wilhelm), a Makeup Artist (Jessika Evans), a Dairy Farmer (Belinda Griffin), a Land Manager (Renee Hutchinson), and a Forester turned Planner (Andrew Stanton), walk into the Gippsland Community Leadership Program. Coming to the program from 5 different walks of life; within a couple of weeks, we were galvanised around an idea to make Gippsland a better place for people who use wheelchairs.Early in the program, we sat around a table in Meeniyan sharing stories about who we were, what mattered to us, and why we had signed up for the Gippsland Community Leadership Program. Jess's story struck a chord with all of us. As if being a young vibrant entrepreneur wasn't enough, Jess shared the story of how she unexpectedly became a disability advocate.One of Jess's boys can't do all the things his twin brother can do, because he lives with cerebral palsy. When Jess and her three kids go out she doesn't know if she will need to leave one of her little people out on the footpath, because there is no ramp. Or if he will be stranded at the front of the shop because the aisles are too narrow for his wheelchair to navigate. Or if their family trip to the movies will come to an end before it has even begun because no one thought the lift was a priority to fix.Jess's story made us all see with fresh eyes how inaccessible many of our amazing Gippsland towns are for people who use wheelchairs. And how this inaccessibility can lead to feelings of being alienated, both from the things and places you want to go, and also from your friends and family. When faced with these barriers day in day out the message for Jess' son is that he and his wheelchair are the problem and that he is stopping his brother and sister from going to the movies. We all saw that the problem is actually a lack of a ramp, the layout of a shop, or the maintenance of facilities. And that the barrier was as likely to be a lack of awareness as it was inaccessible building construction.So we got researching, with an aim to understand this new world, and see if we could do something, however small, to raise awareness and make things a little easier for Karter. We found Australian standards for accessible design, the benefits of inclusive design for everyone, the financial benefits to businesses from making themselves more accessible, the charter of human rights, disability discrimination and equal opportunity legislation, and a whole heap of resources that had been developed to help property and business owners see what small (medium and large) changes could be made to their business to increase accessibility. But we are not a regulator, we are not the ramp police, and we don't have the power, or the inclination to go around telling business owners how "bad" they are for renting a shop built before accessible building standards were adopted. We are all part of the community of Gippsland, and we want to work with the amazing members of those communities to understand the barriers limiting wheelchair accessibility. We want to sing the praises of people who have gone out of their way to be an accessible business. We aim to share ideas of what can be done to open up premises to a broader range of customers. We want Karter (and other wheelchair users in Gippsland) to know from the street that they can get inside and buy what that shop is offering because they can see the Wheely Serious Project Sticker.We hope it goes big, we hope it spreads wide, and we hope that it positively influences the lives of many Gippslanders and visitors to Gippsland. It's gone dark. It's 21:15. And you're standing on platform 1 of the railway station in Penzance. Bright lamps light the long platforms, and seaside smells waft in the air. Wheely bag at your side, you're waiting to board the legendary Night Riviera. A long, impressive line of carriages hiding stylish cabins and bunks within. Departing Penzance 21:45. Arriving London Paddington 05:04. Far away at the front of the train thrums a Class 57 locomotive. It's charging the air with a subsonic, deep brown hum.  As you wait, a motorbike speeds along the road behind the station. It makes an arc of wide reverberant sound. You listen to its drone stretching away. Then, to the luscious spacious echoings, of this tranquil, end-of-the-line Cornish railway station, after dark. Suddenly a handful of people are discreetly hurrying up the platform. Passing by humming coaches, pulling down cold metal handles and heaving open doors. Climbing and lifting bags aboard. And being introduced by smart uniformed stewards to the cabins. Each is equipped with two neat bunks, the slimmest of slimline wardrobes, and an interestingly shaped bulbous sink with a lid that doubles up as a shelf. You unpack your bed things, then return to the vestibule to witness the moment the Night Riviera sets off. A nocturnal journey across Cornwall, over the Tamar bridge, along the Jurassic coast and through the long stretch of Wiltshire and Somerset. As the train pulls off, you can just make out the wild sea, the crashing waves, and a dark shadow that is St Michael's Mount. Swaying carriages, knocking rails, squeaking suspension and steel wheels rolling along miles of steel rails.  Now it's time to make your way back to your cabin. Head down the shoulder-width corridor lined with smart panel doors. With a sturdy slam enter the cabin and notice the change in sound! The velvety quietness is almost deafening. Like falling into a soft duvet! Climb into pyjamas. Lift lid of bulbous sink, and brush teeth. Roll into bunk bed, set alarm, adjust covers, and, sleep?  The aural experience of being in a bunk on a sleeper train is completely spellbinding to us, which is of course why we wanted so much to make and share this recording. The thumps and clunks. The squeaks and bangs. The dull thudding as people walk along the corridor outside. The thrum of the rails. The whine of the electrics and the locomotive, as it pulls you through the night. It's enchanting. It's aural poetry. Rich, soporific sounds, that meld together in rocking rhythms. Dark, brown, cushioning noise, that sends some off to sleep. Others may find themselves held in a deliciously mesmerising doze, a state of semi-conscious slumber. What is even more special, is when the train calls at a station along the way. Gradually slowing. Then gently stopping, with doors distantly slamming, and people muffledly boarding. Then, with a steady sumptuous rising tone, the locomotive powers up again, to haul you and the new passengers onwards, over the rails, and into the night.

Helen Lear-Grant was a young, vibrant, adventurous woman who instead of exploring her world in a care-free sense was suddenly battling for her life after being stricken with a rare medical affliction that, initially, she assumed was a virus that would subside but in fact left her paralyzed. Having every reason to sulk, lament, and bemoan what had been taken from her at no fault of her own, Helen rejected such a response and instead decided her energy would be channeled into what she could still do: enjoy new adventures in life more profoundly understanding life is not guaranteed from day to day. In this newfound approach, Helen has not only lived her life to the fullest but in doing so has been confronted with the many challenges many face in accessing public places. They met when Nick showed strong interest in the tech startups accepted within Sabine’s accelerator programs and was willing to mentor them with advice when he was leading the Financial Services, Insurance & InsurTech practices at Capital Law. Nick moved from legal advice within a legal firm to becoming the group general of one of the leading InsurTech growth ventures in the UK. He is also an Advisor to the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Centre for Data Ethics & Innovation on Digital Ethics and the use of Artificial Intelligence in Insurance. On this podcast they catch-up to understand what the past 4 years has brought to him in terms of lessons learnt. KEY TAKEAWAYS I fell into insurance, the firm I applied to for a training contract was a media and entertainment specialist, which was something I was interested in at the time – advising big bands on tour around the world! But they had a really strong insurance practice and I really enjoyed the fact that there was a dual-layer to all the legal aspects we dealt with: The insurance layer and the underlying subject matter. My day tends to be partnership focused, there’s always something going on in the partnership front. There’s claims to deal with, but otherwise it’s running around responding to the fires as and when they arise, dealing with them as best you can and trying to have the headspace to look more than a week or a month ahead and think strongly about the strategy of the legal function and the wider business. Law firms and some other businesses tend to be far too fixated on the granularity of academics and qualifications. Of course, you need to be qualified, but actually what turns a good lawyer into a really great lawyer is personality and character. People who can roll with the punches, take something on the chin and move on, most importantly for lawyers, people who can accept being wrong. I don’t think lawyers as a profession are very good at admitting when they’re wrong, but in a startup environment, you need to be prepared to make mistakes, it’s part and parcel of learning. One of the biggest challenges in the insurance market with respect to data and the usage of data is transparency and fairness, which everybody wants to ensure, against commerciality and sensitive information. The most obvious example of this is pricing. The balance between using data to improve our products and services, and to drive greater revenue and growth against how much customers want to know about them. With AI, it’s a very difficult area in the context of regulated activities, because you need to have explainability, why someone has been priced in a certain way. It’s going to be very difficult to build a genuinely self-managing, machine learning intuitive system with the necessary explainability and insight that goes with that. The government, in yet another attempt to look like they’re on top of the green agenda, has just brought forward its ban on all diesel, petrol and hybrid cars to 2035. From that date, you will only be allowed to buy electric or hydrogen vehicles. Our wise central-planners reckon those gas-guzzling, polluting SUVs we all like so much will be banished from the road, and all those petrol stations will be replaced with sleek charging stations. But the state has a terrible record of telling us what to drive. It is only a few years since it used tax policy to get us all to buy diesels and no one needs to be reminded how that worked out. It was later discredited and severely damaged the market for second-hand diesels. The subsidies fuelled a rise in diesel cars, increasing air pollution. How we get around is changing at lightning speed – it would be better to allow consumers to shape that future instead of the state trying to dictate it. Or would it? Joining the IEA's Darren Grimes to discuss is the IEA’s Dr Richard Wellings, Head of Transport at the IEA.

London-based startup Wheely has raised a $15 million Series B round led by Concentric with Oleg Tscheltzoff, Misha Sokolov and other investors also participating. The company wants to build an Uber competitor focused on the luxury market. It's a bit ironic when you think about it as Uber started as a luxury company. But everybody knows someone with horrific Uber stories. That's why Wheely is building a reliable and predictable ride-hailing experience.

In this episode, David is joined by Kris Saunders Stowe, the founder of Wheely Good Fitness. The podcast is recorded live at the Fit4All national expo (organized by Cara) in Dublin, Ireland.   Wheely good fitness provides group exercise classes to those with disabilities, in particular wheelchair users.   Kris, who is a wheelchair user himself, set about trying to improve the choices for wheelchair users whilst also changing the attitude towards disability and fitness. For many wheelchair users there are medical issues affecting their lives and creating challenges every day whilst also having to cope with the side effects of medications along with the emotional strain an individuals circumstances can bring. However, overall fitness plays a big part in how we feel, cope with and enjoy life whilst also enabling independence and social interaction. A study in 2010/11 showed that 63% of wheelchair users are not taking sufficient physical activity, increasing their risk of developing certain chronic diseases by nearly 60%. This week we chat with a real life Guitar Hero Mel Bergman, the founder of Wheely Guitars, a custom guitar maker who specializes in building guitars designed to be able to be played in a wheelchair. Plus, we giggle at G string jokes and learn about the meaning of Mastadong.

Entrepreneurial ideas that surprise or inspire us are often the result of a personal experience. Maria De La Croix once applied for the role of a barista at her local Starbucks only to be instantly rejected for having blue hair. Rather than sit around feeling discriminated against for expressing her creative side, she decided to use this experience as an inspiration to follow her own path. The universe has a funny habit of pointing us in the right direction when we least expect it. Being turned away from the behemoth coffee chain delivered an idea that would change everything. Maria decided to create an antidote to the clone towns that consist of an H&M, Starbucks, and McDonald’s across the globe. Inspired by Airbnb, and Uber’s new way of doing business, she found a way of bypassing the old laws of the industry by not buying physical space. Wheelys Café was born, and the first high-tech mobile café hit the streets of Sweden. Serving 100-percent organic coffee outside the same Starbucks that rejected her could have been considered poetic justice. But visibly taking more money than the global coffee chain was all the proof she needed that she was doing the right thing. It typically costs over $500,000 to open a traditional café before adding rent, electricity, and other utilities. Upon learning these costs, she created a solution that would open up opportunities to millions of passionate young entrepreneurs. A completely mobile Wheelys café franchise was made available for just three thousand dollars to the global community. An organic revolution gathered pace in a world that is beginning to tire of industrial fast-food from big brands. Since they launched, Wheelys café has doubled sales every six months and sold 500+ cafés to 60+ countries. With over 100 people waiting to buy the next batch of Wheelys, It’s easy to see why this innovative idea has become the world’s quickest growing coffee café chain. The mobility allows the owners to follow the crowds from the train station in the morning to a sports venue in the evening.  One owner managed to turn over $1,000 in a day at Santa Monica beach. Creating a movement of organic mobile cafés in over 60 countries after being rejected from one of the world’s biggest brands is a truly inspirational story. But, its what Wheelys stands for to entrepreneurial people across the globe that are genuinely heartwarming. Hugely successful fundedbyme and Indiegogo campaigns along with a $2.5 million seed round earlier this year is impossible to ignore. Recently, an invest in Wheelys to grow the movement campaign also proved to be a big hit. A global network of people who want to do things differently are challenging the old way of things.  In particular, young entrepreneurs are enjoying the benefits of taking home 90 percent of your revenue from their own franchise. The alternative of accepting a minimum wage for working in a large brands coffee chain quickly loses its appeal for obvious reasons. Wheely’s Cafe ticks every box for a modern business. A small start-up cost, almost no running costs, healthy, extremely profitable and most importantly ECO- friendly. The ability to pedal your business around any City is an incredibly attractive option for anyone that wants to make their own way in life. On my podcast, I spoke with Maria De La Croix about her inspirational story. Large corporate global brands have used environmentalism as a gimmick over the years. But in this age of authenticity and environmentally friendly businesses for the ethically minded, Wheelys Cafe are standing out from the crowd in a city near you.
