Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024 A high school athlete may have lost her race, but she wins at life after helping out another runner in distress…a Putnam County music teacher's creative approach to learning earns him the title of West Virginia's 2025 Teacher of the Year…and Wheeling's “Food for Fines” cancels parking violations for residents in exchange for a food donation…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE REAL WV – Olivia Alexander is a freshman runner for Musselman High School. She traveled five hours from her home in Inwood to compete in the State Cross Country Championship. After training for months with her teammates and overcoming an injury early in the season, she didn't place. She didn't even finish. She accomplished something much more. One mile into the 5K race for the state title, Olivia saw Neena. The two runners had never met. All Olivia knew was what she saw–a girl in distress. And even though it was in the middle of the biggest race of her life, she stopped to help. Her Good Samaritan deed earned her praise from Neena, the coaches and other supporters. Check out the full story at the link! Instead of sheet music or instruments, Skiles brought in pre-cut pastry dough and baked crescent rolls while teaching about Thanksgiving traditions. Students and staff said this kind of creative, hands-on lesson is just another day in Skiles' general music class. His engaging and multifaceted teaching style recently earned him the title of West Virginia's 2025 Teacher of the Year. Donations will be distributed to local non-profit organizations to benefit community members in need. Mayor Denny Magruder expressed pride in the initiative's success, noting the impact it has had on local food pantries over the years. “This initiative reflects the holiday spirit of giving and helps provide additional support to those in need. While no one enjoys getting a parking ticket, this program offers an opportunity to make something meaningful out of it,” he said. The “Food for Fines” program will apply to citations issued between Dec. 1, 2024, and Jan. 1, 2025. Donations must be brought to the City's finance department, where parking fines are typically paid. Around the turn of the millennium, Pentecostal churches began to pepper majority-Buddhist Sri Lanka, setting off a sense of alarm among Buddhists who saw Christianity as a neocolonial threat to the nation. Rumors of foul play in the death of a Buddhist monk, as well as allegations of proselytizing in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami and during the final stages of civil war, spurred nationalist anxieties, moral panics, and even episodes of violence by Buddhists against Christians suspected of facilitating “unethical” conversions. Through vivid ethnography and keen observations of media events, Karma and Grace: Religious Difference in Millennial Sri Lanka (Columbia UP, 2023) illuminates disputes over religious freedom and pluralism amid the rise of charismatic Christianity in Sri Lanka. Neena Mahadev explores the dueling efforts of Buddhist nationalists and Christian evangelists to reshape Sri Lanka's religious, economic, and political landscapes. She considers theological and political impasses between Buddhism's vast timescales of karma and Christians' promises of the immediacy of their God's salvific grace. While Christian missions spread “the Good News,” subsets of Buddhists produced bad press, sting operations, and disparaging media to impede born-again churches from taking root. In gripping detail, Mahadev recounts how modernist and traditionalist Theravāda Buddhists, Pentecostal newcomers, long-established Christian denominations, local deity and spirit cults, and the innovations of mavericks intermingle in a multireligious public sphere. Even amid trenchant conflicts, Karma and Grace demonstrates that social proximity between rivals is also conducive to religious experimentation and the ambiguities of identity that allow Sri Lankans to live with difference. Neena Mahadev is an assistant professor of anthropology at Yale-NUS College and holds a courtesy appointment with the National University of Singapore. Learn more about your ad choices. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Sheila Athens, author of the book Neena Lee is Seeing Things. Sheila writes smart contemporary women's fiction set where the South meets the Sunshine state. Her stories are about women seeking to find the peace we all deserve. Readers are drawn to her work because they believe that everyday heroes can make a difference in our world. She loves quiet spaces, eccentric people and the little band of writer hikers who walk at sunrise on a regular basis. After growing up in the Ozarks, she moved to Florida—sight unseen—with the man who would become her husband. She's a boy mom, a former vice president of human resources, and an avid audiobook listener. To sign up for her newsletter or to schedule a book club visit (either in-person or virtual), go to SheilaAthens.com. In my book review, I stated Neena Lee is Seeing Things is a contemporary southern fiction looking back at the marriage of John F Kennedy to Carolyn in 1996 and their death in a plane crash in 1999 through the eyes of a journalist, Neena Lee. Neena has suffered loss and holds herself responsible. Her latest lost left her hospitalized in a mental health facility and without a job. She needs to write this article about John Jr to prove her abilities and save herself financially. However, when she 'sees' John Jr standing in the church, she is sure that her mental illness has taken a turn for the worse. I enjoyed how Sheila connects those visiting the island today with issues Neena and/or John himself need to face. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Sheila Athens writes smart fiction set where the South meets the Sunshine state. Her stories are about women seeking to find the peace we all deserve—whether they're battling an external foe or an internal one (or both). Readers are drawn to her work because they believe that everyday heroes can make a difference in our world. After growing up in the Ozarks, she moved—sight unseen—to Northeast Florida with the man who would eventually become her husband. Thirty-five years later, she's still on the shores of the Atlantic, grateful her two grown sons and their families live nearby. She spent three decades in corporate America, most of it as a vice president of human resources. Though she did recruiting, training, and all the other disciplines of the field, she loved the employee relations aspect the most. It gave her a front row seat to the study of human nature, which is great fodder for a writer. She's a feminist, a lover of nature, a writer hiker, and an audiobook enthusiast. Her late husband did all the cooking at their house, so she's having a fun time teaching herself how to cook.Sheila now has two natural states: Talking books with readers and other writers OR staying firmly ensconced in her quiet little lair, where she reads, writes and communes with the ducks who live on the lake right off her back porch. Her latest novel is Neena Lee is Seeing Things.Learn more at shielaathens.comIntro reel, Writing Table Podcast 2024 Outro Recording
