Ahead of its debut airing, MTV Shuga Mashariki's DOP Enos Olik, cast members Julie Brenda and Basil Mungai, get hyped with Wanjira Longauer, unpacking all things about this drama series' new chapter!
Shuga Cain steps Behind The Rope. Shuga is here to discuss it all! Of course, all includes RuPaul's Drag Race and Shuga's Season Eleven contribution to the brilliant show. Shuga takes us down the road of her journey from quitting a six figure a year job, to performing nightly in the legendary New York City nightlife club scene with the likes of Bob The Drag Queen to eventually applying and being chosen for Drag Race. With all the drama so far this season on RHOA, RHOBH, Summer House and more, we figured today the perfect day to share something fun in this blast from the past chat with the one and only Miss Shuga Cain. Shuga opens up about the positives and negatives of Drag Race, the judges Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews as well as RuPaul herself. Shuga breaks down the best and hardest parts of Drag Race and lifts the curtain for a look into what filming the hit TV show is really like. We also chat about guest judges Miley Cyrus, Adam Rippon and last, but certainly not least, The Real Housewives of Atlanta's Kandi Burruss. @missshugacain @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: CORNBREAD - cornbreadhemp.com/velvet (30% Off With Code Velvet on Cornbread's Gummies) AIR DOCTOR - airdoctorpro.com (Use Code Velvet For Up To $300 Off Today The Best Air Purifier Voted By Newsweek) STRAWBERRY - Strawberry.me/VELVET (Get 20% Off Your First Month & Take Charge Of Your Future With The Help Of a Certified Coach) JUNE'S JOURNEY (Download This Hidden Object Interactive Mobile Game Now on Android or iOS) ADVERTISING INQUIRIES - Please contact David@advertising-execs.com MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. Chicago psych-rock band Spun Out have just released their second LP Dream Noise, out October 25th via Shuga Records, and shared the lead single/video “Paranoia.” Consisting of former NE-HI members Michael Wells (guitar, vocals) and James Weir (keys), plus the addition of Sean Page (synths), Joshua Wells (drums, recording, mixing), and Chris Sutter (bass), Spun Out create melancholic psych-pop bliss full of lush mesmerizing grooves, with a keen ear for studio experimentation. Lead single “Paranoia” furthers that. Inspired by a time when Wells was taken out by a rip tide in the Pacific, the song is about the feeling of trying to remain calm physically despite not being able to control what's around you. “Lyrically, I was trying to convey how dreams overlap into real life and vice versa,” explains Wells. “I got taken out by a rip tide in the Pacific a few years back and that feeling of trying to remain calm physically while not being in control of your surroundings definitely informed the psychology of the tune, as well as the twists and turns of the production style.” The video was directed by Tim Nagle, and shows Wells watching grainy VHS footage that gets increasingly unsettling, creating an atmosphere that lives up to the track's title. Dream Noise is an intentionally more honed and curated collection of songs than Spun Out's debut, Touch the Sound (2020, Shuga). It takes the band's collaborative spirit and sense of maximalist experimentation established in their debut and vacuum seals these ideas into tightly arranged, hooky pop gems. Sonically, the production style of the record remains refreshing, surprising and unto themselves compared to other indie music contemporaries. Lyrically, Spun Out finds new depth of emotion in directness, spruced up by memorable double entendres and turns of phrase. The hooks are smart and poetic, but never boring. Dream Noise emphasizes the performance and character of the band as live performers more than the exploratory studio templates of the debut, bringing a new element of warmth and naturalness to their sound. In a Marvel heavy episode, there's some controversial Mattel moves that are very not-rock-n-roll. The Todd makes a face that not even a mother could love while the Legends team somehow make two different He-Mans. And is that Battle Cat I see? Why is Wolverine in blue? But it's all ok - because the best of all time Rogue is here. A record breaking mini-fig and all the Marvel on-screen reveals. Then we look at possibly the greatest wave of TMNT Ultimates - ever? Shawn Decker is a musician, author and internet pioneer and has commandeered a life driven by creativity and shaped by medical adversity. Diagnosed with HIV at age 11, before the advent of the effective treatments, Shawn's parents were told that he had six months-to-two-years to live. That was in 1987. At age 14, he skipped his exams to meet Depeche Mode through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He was crowned Homecoming King at Waynesboro High School in Virginia in 1992, and credits his poor attendance record for the win. At age 20, Shawn opened up about living with HIV by posting one of the first online blogs in 1996. After moving from Waynesboro to Charlottesville, Virginia, Shawn fell in love with the local music scene and, most importantly, a fellow HIV educator, Gwenn. Educating together as a sero-diverse couple- where one partner is HIV positive and the other is HIV negative- Shawn and Gwenn have shared their love story with millions of people. And in some very unique ways. From educational programming on the BBC, MTV, VH1 and even Hong Kong TV, to a Bed In in a Grand Central Station storefront on World AIDS Day. Their candor, humor and openness inspired the inclusion of a sero-diverse couple's storyline on the scripted MTV series, Shuga which has educated teenagers and young adults around the world. Shawn has been a contributing writer for Poz Magazine since 1997 and his humorous memoir, My Pet Virus: The True Story of a Rebel Without a Cure, was published by the Penguin Group in 2006. From 1992 until 2022, he wrote and performed music as Synthetic Division, cutting his teeth in the basement of Tokyo Rose restaurant, an iconic Charlottesville music scene. His new band, Nouveau Vintage, makes their debut on March 9 at the Please Don't Tell Album Release party, sharing the stage with Charming Disaster and DJ Cadybug. This Spirit Ball takes place at the Southern Cafe & Music Hall in downtown Charlottesville, VA. In this episode, Shawn talks about his life; the importance of breaking down the stigma and discrimination around HIV; his thoughts on death and living; how music has influenced and supported him through many ups and downs; the song that his mother used to contact him from beyond the grave; words of wisdom; and what lies ahead. You can connect with Shawn, his writings, and music at shawnandgwenn.com; raredisease.net ; poz.com and through Instagram @shawndecker & @nouveauvintagemusic You can connect with Lauren on Instagram @lauren.samay and @mymourningroutinepodcast, on Facebook @lauren.samay.coaching or through www.laurensamay.com If you are tuning in and finding value in these episodes, please take a moment to rate and review My Mourning Routine on Apple Podcasts-- it means so much and helps make a bigger, connecting splash in the podcasting pond: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/my-mourning-routine/id1654068541 Sign up for Lauren's newsletter here.

What does MTV have to do with fighting HIV? My guest on this episode Professor Eliana La Ferrara of Bocconi University in Milan knows the answer and she joins me to tell me more about her work as a development economist. Her specialism is in applied work, meaning that she collects and analyses data, mostly from families or individuals in poor or disadvantaged locations. And she tries to understand from this data, which policies might be effective in fighting poverty. In our discussion, we explore how Eliana became interested in researching the use of TV “edutainment” to change attitudes and behaviours in developing countries. That led her to work with colleagues from the World Bank and MIT, on a study of how MTV Shuga, a television series shown in Nigeria, might change knowledge and attitudes towards HIV and risky sexual behaviour. The good news is that it is extremely effective. Why, how and the lessons we can learn from that, is what Eliana explains to me on the show. You can find the World Bank sponsored research paper Eliana refers to here: https://bit.ly/3wKjA7uFor more on Eliana and her area of research: https://faculty.unibocconi.eu/elianalaferrara/
Luis Felber has been involved in England's music scene for a long time, playing in tons of bands, in various genres from punk rock, with his band Turbogeist to psych rock with Shuga. He is also one of the founders of Young Turks Records, now known as Young. If the name sounds familiar that's because they have some pretty notable acts on their roster including The XX (and with that Jamie XX) and FKA Twigs. However, since the end of 2019, Luis has been releasing self-produced tracks under the name Attawalpa – this happens to me his Peruvian middle name. Because he has full control, Luis flirts with different genres in the music he makes, but I guess if we wanted to pidgeon hole him, I would say he's somewhere in the alternative indie world. Luis and I caught up via Zoom and had a really long chat – it was just so interesting getting to know him and hear about his journey to becoming Attawalpa. Rescue 911! Somebody save this episode! Okay, so this week's improv challenge was no crime against humanity—A'keria and Brooke are certainly innocent!—but in the lineup of Season 11's episodes, this one is certainly suspect. Silky is practically bugging the judges to serve time in the Bottom 2, Nina and Shuga struggle with being bystanders in their scenes, Yvie is a star witness to A'keria's winning turn and someone needed to call in Animal Control on Plastique and Vanjie. The cat fight turns into a Bottom 2 lip sync, but was the wrong queen sent away? We plead the fifth.... Plants on the runway! This week's design challenge has the queens feeling their oats, wheats, grains, thins and oatmeal—and a whole array of other food groups—to create high fiber fashion on the runway! Plastique gets three mommies, Yvie gets fed up, Shuga gets fed, RaJah isn't afraid to bark, Silky isn't as smooth as she thinks, A'keria is your aunt who plays football, Nina West is Snoopy, Vanjie sounds off in Untucked and Brooke wastes no time showing personality with those reaction shots. Plus: Alyssa Edwards is here to help water this crop of queens with runway advice, and RuPaul tills the soil for another Emmy.
