The FTSE 100 was on the back foot in early trades with miners under pressure as China indicated there would be no more major interventions to boost its ailing property market. The Footsie was down 23 at 8,175 led by copper giants Glencore and Anglo American. Compass topped the risers as the contract caterer served up a 10.3% jump in revenue in its latest quarter. For the full year, underlying profit growth will be more15% on a constant-currency basis, it added, with all regions doing well. Online estate agency Rightmove believes 120,000 more rental properties are needed to bring rental price growth back to pre-pandemic levels. Average advertised rents outside of London just hit a new all-time high of £1,314 per calendar month, it added. Finally, Tesla boss Elon Musk's latest pronouncement is that the electric car maker will start to use bi-pedal ‘Optimus' humanoid robots in its factories from as early as next year. “Genuinely useful humanoid robots” will help in low production for Tesla internal use next year, said the billionaire. #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #ftse #ftse100 #footsie #glencore #angloamerican #compas #rightmove #testla #elonmusk #optimus #humanoid #robót #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
The FTSE 100 rebounded after the shock of Friday's IT outage while Joe Biden stepping down from the US Presidential race has had little impact. In early trades, the Footsie was up 41 points at 8,197 with pest control specialist Rentokil initially 12% higher and leading the way on reports it is in the sights of Philip Jansen, the former BT boss. Jansen is said to be lining up a bid with private equity backing. Ryanair sent airlines into a tailspin with a warning that fares this summer would be materially lower alongside a drop in profits. Rival EasyJet got caught in the turbulence and is down almost 7%. Bookmaker Entain is doing better after the Ladbrokes owner appointed former DraftKings man Gavin Issacs as its new chief executive while Vodafone has sold another chunk of mobile tower business Vantage, raising €1.3 billion. #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #ftse #ftse100 #footsie #biden #entain #ladbrokes #draftkings #tyanair #easyjet #vantage #vodafone #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
London's FTSE 100 opened sharply lower though it was hard to be certain due to a massive outage across Microsoft platforms that seemingly has knocked out the London Stock Exchange's site. According to Google Finance, the Footsie was down 52 at 8,152 in early trades. The problem caused chaos across the globe, with banks and IT systems crippled and planes grounded. Microsoft announced on its social media accounts that it was "investigating an issue impacting users' ability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services". Ryanair warned of a “third party IT issue” affecting “all airlines operating across the network”, while Gatwick Airport has warned of cancellations. Hargreaves Lansdown did get its numbers out, with the wealth platform noting stronger share-dealing volumes and record assets under management of £155.3 billion. Hargreaves is facing a £5.3 billion takeover from private equity group CVC. UK Retail sales for June meanwhile declined 1.2% month over month, a threefold undershoot against the 0.4% slip expected by analysts. It follows a 2.9% rise in May. #proactiveinvestors #marketreport #ftse #ftse100 #footsie #microsoft #microsoftoutage #outage #ryanair #gatwick #hargreaveslansdown #retailsales #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
The FTSE 100 shrugged off another bout of tech weakness in the US overnight and got off to a flying start led by Mike Ashley's Frasers Group. The Footsie was up 76 points 8,623 shortly after the open, building on the late gains seen Wednesday. Sports Direct owner Frasers is the standout, with its shares leaping more than 8% as annual profits hit the top of forecasts and were accompanied by guidance for another hefty increase in the current year. Power generator SSE meanwhile said it is on track to reach around nine gigawatts of installed capacity by 2027, largely from offshore wind farm projects. The company added that it welcomes the new government's renewables plans. Wealth platform AJ Bell was another healthy riser as it reported a big jump in customer numbers and said people are trading more as confidence in the market picks up. Also on the up on a good day was Dunelm with shares of the homewares retailer up 6% on comments that profits this year would come in “slightly ahead of expectations”. #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #ftse #ftse100 #footsie #mikeashley #frasers #sse #sportsdirect #ajbell #dunelm #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
The FTSE 100 opened flat with some traders probably nursing sore heads after England's last minute winner in the Euro semi-final. In early exchanges, the Footsie was up 2 at 8,196. Water companies were early risers as markets decided the price rises allowed by Ofwat for the next five years looked reasonable. United Utilities and Severn Trent were the best of the gainers. What Ofwat's decision means for struggling London supplier Thames is not clear as it can only raise prices at half the level it wanted. There was more good news for Keir Starmer as Britain's economy grew better than expected in May. Month on month, gross domestic product grew by 0.4%, an upside surprise following a zero-growth period in April, and by 0.9% over the past three months. Dr Martens also perked up after the iconic boot maker said trading had steadied in the first quarter, though it said this is seasonally its weakest. #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #ftse #ftse100 #footsie #ofwat #unitedutilities #severntrent #thameswater #drmartens #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
The FTSE 100 made a decent start helped by rises for airlines led by British Airways owner IAG and easyJet though the distraction of England's Euro 2024 semi-final tonight is likely to loom large. Underlining its significance, pub chain Wetherspoons reported record revenues with sales up 5.8% in the past ten weeks and presumably helped by England's run. Sales per pub were 21% higher than pre-pandemic levels said boss Tim Martin. Overall, the index was up around 27 points at 8,167 despite a poor showing from all the housebuilders after a downbeat trading statement from Barratt. The Footsie listed group reported lower sales and selling prices in the year just ended while adding that completions will fall again in the current year to around 13,000 from 14,000. Direct Line meanwhile committed to paying out around 60% of post-tax operating profit as a dividend, “with any additional capital returns to be reviewed annually alongside our full-year results”. Shares in the insurer rose by 1%. #proactiveinvestors #marketreport #ftse #ftse100 #footsie #euros2024 #wetherspoons #barratt #IAG #britishairways #easyjet #directline #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

You can wait a long time for a FTSE 100 record high but for peak-starved British investors this week delivered a bonanza. Four record highs were racked up by the FTSE 100, with only Wednesday's slight dip spoiling what would have been a perfect run over a week. The return to new highs on Thursday came as a mega-mining merger bid arrive from BHP for Anglo American - and that was followed swiftly by one of the UK's few tech stars Darktrace announcing it had accepted a bid on Friday. Are these the catalysts that fund manager Nick Train was talking about when he said it could take a big takeover to shake UK stocks out of their slumber and get the world investing in Footsie companies again? On this week's podcast, Georgie Frost, Tanya Jefferies and Simon Lambert look and what's moving the UK market, why it is judged to be cheap and whether you should invest. Plus, the top investment trusts for retirement investing and the latest twist in the state pension top-ups saga. Should we cut inheritance tax - or at least sort out the mess - as the take soars? And finally, are you a backseat driver? See if you can pass the test.

The FTSE 100 has seen a decent opening as results from heavyweights BAT Industries and Unilever were well received. The Footsie was up 10 points at 7,638 in early trades with the US‘s S&P 500 index moving to within touching distance of the landmark 5,000 mark also helping the mood. Unilever cushioned the blow of lower profits with a new US$1.5bn share buyback lifting it to the top of the index's risers. Fourth quarter revenues at the Hellman's mayonnaise and Dove soap group fell 3% however as its run of inflation-busting price rises came to an end. Shares in British American Tobacco also rose as profits from e-cigarettes, vapes and nicotine vapes increased. Sales in 2023 rose 1.6% supported by almost 16% growth in these new product areas. Among the small caps, Touchstone Exploration jumped 14% on what it said was a "great start" to the year due to the successful drilling of the Cascadura-2 well in Trinidad. #ProactiveInvestors #FTSE100 #Unilver #BritishAmericanTobacco #BTI #touchstoneexploration #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
The FTSE 100 burst into life Tuesday on a share buyback from BP and an Asian market surge on talk China is planning hefty support to prop up its beleaguered stock markets. In early trades, the Footsie was more than seventy points higher at 7,680 led by a 5% jump by BP as investors welcomed its full-year update. New chief executive Murray Auchincloss picked up the pace of the oil giant's share buyback plans after delivering a fourth-quarter profit ahead of expectations at US$2.99 billion. Elsewhere, retail sales data was more subdued, rising by 1.2% year-on-year in January and slowing down from growth of 4.2% a year ago, according to data from the BRC and KPMG survey. Ahead of the bank reporting season, Virgin Money reported little change in its first quarter, with a drop in mortgage lending but a pick-up in its business division. Finally, in a rarity for small-cap miners, Blencowe Resources jumped more than a fifth as the graphite specialist managed a placing at an impressive 33% premium to last night's closing share price. #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #BP #FTSE #footsie #MurrayAuchincloss #retailsales #VirginMoney #BlencoweResources #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
London's FTSE 100 opened higher, shrugging off the ramp-up of hostilities in the Red Sea as the US launched more missile strikes and hawkish comments from Fed chief Jerome Powell. The Footsie was up around 26 points at 7,641 shortly after trading got underway led by Ocado, luxury goods group Burberry and GSK. Vodafone led the fallers on another low-key trading update. Stated revenues dropped again though there was some progress on an underlying basis form the mobile giant. Boeing is another giant under pressure, with the boss of airline Emirates warning the plane maker is in the ‘last chance saloon' after its latest mechanical failures. Emirates is one Boeing's largest customers. Spread better CMC Markets was a good riser after announcing it would save £21 million a year through cutting 200 jobs or around 17% of its workforce. A one-off charge of £2.5 million will be taken in 2024 for the cuts. London markets lacked direction early as investors mulled the decision by the US central bank not to cut interest rates last night. The Bank of England makes its decision at lunchtime today and a similar outcome is widely expected. The Footsie was up six points at 7,637 in early trading with Shell's US$3.5bn buyback, higher dividend and better-then-expected quarterly fourth quarter profit lifting the shares around 1%. BT did even better on new chief executive Allison Kirkby's first outing. The telco eked out gains in both revenue and underlying profits in its third quarter putting it on track to hit full-year targets. A new round of North Sea oil licences sees BP and Shell, again, among the big winners. Minnow Deltic Energy also picked up two confirmed licences and might be in line for a third. And finally a rarity on AIM today, an IPO. Microsalt, a low-salt food additive group, raised £3m and started trading with a value of £18.5m #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #USFED #BOE #interestrates #BP #shell #DelticEnergy #BP #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews #Microsalt #IPO #aim
The FTSE 100 was heading lower in early trading after US big tech earnings overnight failed to live up to the hype. Google and Microsoft just about met expectations, but more was expected and shares in both dropped, souring the mood in London with Footsie down 17 at 7,648. An upbeat statement from pharma giant GSK cut little ice, even though it promised hefty revenue would rise more than expected through to 2031. Sales in 2023 rose by 5% to £30.3 billion. House prices rose by more than expected in January according to the latest survey from Nationwide, with gains of 0.7% over the month before. Vodafone meanwhile has rejected a new offer from Iliad to merge the two group's Italian businesses, sending its share price tumbling again. Looking ahead new Brexit border controls come in today, while a US interest rate announcement will dominate the afternoon. #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #google #microsoft #gsk #iliad #vodafone #nationwide #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews #brexit #bordercontrols #usrates #fed

It's risky to live 'in the moment' it requires courage, vulnerability and flexibility. It requires having an open mind and keeping an open heart. 'It's not about the feeding tube.. it's about what happens after, what we make of each moment'. ~ Jules ALS won't stop us.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Now everybody's positive in the US market and negative in the international markets. They don't see the opportunity. But it's smacking you right in the face. Who doesn't know that Taiwan could be invaded by China, who doesn't know that the US dollar is hurting non-US assets, and who doesn't know that there's an energy crisis in Europe? Meanwhile, most of the world doesn't know right now that in the UK, the British stock market, the Footsie, is outperforming the S&P, the DOW, and the Nasdaq. It's wild to think that England has gone positive for the year because when you look at the headlines their political system is a mess and they've got higher inflation than we do. But if we all know it then it's already priced into the market. It's kind of like this, it doesn't look good in Europe. Yeah, we know. But the market's already accounted for that. This week on the tipping point: Anthony O'Neal dept specialist You'll need to check out the episode to hear all the wisdom dropped by Anthony O'Neal but here's a little teaser… "I believe that if you aim at nothing you'll hit that all the time. I believe that the caliber of your future will be determined by the caliber of goals and decisions that you make today. If you want your future to be bright, if you want your future to be wealthy, solid, fruitful, and joyful then you have to make fruitful and joyful goals and decisions today. It's important. When I branched out on my own about two years ago, I said, "Where am I going? What do I want to accomplish?" My very first thought is I want to be intentional, I want to be impactful, and I want to be influential. Those three things will then produce income. So that's the main thing, are my goals intentional? Are my goals, if I accomplish them, will they be impactful to others? Will it be influential? And if the answer is yes to all three of those, then income will come. You can't anywhere without goals or without a vision. Really more so vision than goals when you think about it. Because goals mean that once you hit that goal, that comes to a stop. So I love goals but also, personally, I want a vision that is ongoing that is never going to stop. I'm going to keep going as long as I'm living on this earth." This week's hidden facts of finance Apple has outperformed its peers by a wide margin this year. Apple is now worth more than Microsoft and META put together combined. There have been around 33,000 tech layoffs since the beginning of November. However, the economy generated something like 261,000 jobs in October and 200,000 in November. Simple math, more jobs are being created than are being lost. This doesn't sound very recessionary. 10,000 baby boomers reach age 65 every day according to the US Census Bureau. And by 2030, all baby boomers will be at least 65. The Boomer labor force has been declining by 2.2 million on average each year since 2010 or about 5,900 people daily are leaving the workforce. We think this is a problem. The US just passed 1 trillion music streams this year. The first time that milestone had been reached in a single year. That's about 960,000 years of streaming music so far in 2022. In the pantry this week is Bradford Knight, a beauty industry veteran who's worked on various TV shows including The Martha Stewart Show and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Bradford shares a hookup story that'll curl your toes! Pecan Waffles Ingredients: King Arthur Cake Flour, baking powder, baking soda, kosher salt, sugar, butter, buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, whole pecans (toast and chop), maple syrup, frozen cherries. Directions: In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. 2 cups of cake flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, 2-3 tablespoons of sugar. In a second bowl, mix together 1¾ - 2 cups of buttermilk, 3 eggs, a ½ cup (one stick) of butter, 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until it's combined and smooth; a few tiny lumps are okay. Do not over mix the batter because it will cause gluten to form and create tough waffles. Set the batter aside to rest while the waffle maker heats. When the waffle maker is ready, pour a ½ cup of batter and add approximately 2 tablespoons of toasted, chopped pecans on top. The waffle will be ready once the steam from the waffle maker comes to a near stop. For cherry maple syrup, heat 1 cup of maple syrup and ½ a cup of frozen cherries on medium in a small saucepan until the syrup lightly bubbles. Take the pan off the heat, steep for 30 minutes to an hour before preparing/serving waffles. Thanks to our sponsors: Feals
The former Fox commentator Jonah Goldberg — who has been called a “Fox defector” — says that Tucker Carlson's latest documentary series was “the anvil that broke the camel's back.” Titled “Patriot Purge,” it featured conspiracy theories about the Jan. 6 insurrection under the guise of journalistic interrogation. It also became a breaking point in a schism unfolding at the network between those who have embraced the Big Lie and those who feel troubled by the network's abandonment of basic facts. In this conversation, Goldberg offers insight into Fox's embrace of Trumpism and the ways the network has “played footsie” with falsehoods and the former president. They discuss Rupert Murdoch, Roger Ailes and the legacy media shake-up spurred in part by Substack, which Goldberg and his business partner Stephen Hayes use to distribute their conservative online publication, The Dispatch. And they discuss the 2024 Republican primaries, as Goldberg muses about whether a potential Tucker Carlson ticket could beat Trump. This episode contains strong language. You can find transcripts (posted midday) and more information for all episodes at nytimes.com/sway, and you can find Kara on Twitter @karaswisher.
