Welcome to episode 28 of the Nurtured by Nature podcast, today I'm delighted to be joined in conversation by Lucy Ní hAodhagáin / O'Hagan the founder of Wild Awake Ireland. Lucy is quite simply one of the most kind hearted, intriguing and inspiring people I have had the pleasure to meet. During our conversation she shares her journey which is beautifully woven with her love of nature. A relationship that began from a need for sanctuary from the challenges of life and has blossomed into a life where she consciously awakens a deeper relationship with the world rooted in reciprocity, reverence and responsibility in both her own life but also the experiences of the many people she works with and guides to their own remembering. Our conversation gently meanders through her wisdom of ancestral skills, ceremonial rites of passage and wildlife tracking and the richness these threads can bring to the tapestry of life. We also hold space for the grief and pain so many of us are experiencing in this time and celebrate the importance of looking to the richness and resilience to be found in the edges, so we can move away from polarisation towards embracing the incredible diversity of voices in  our own communities and in the natural world. Lucy offers up the sacred invitation to deeply listen, and witness each others stories, to find the courage to sit with the questions and challenges of our time and dream into the new world that we believe is possible, whilst remembering to trust that most people have good intentions and truly want to do something to help. Learn more about LucyLucy Ní hAodhagáin / O'Hagan (They/She) is the founder and director of Wild Awake Ireland, a project which seeks to rekindle ancestral life ways for cultural and ecological resilience across the island of Ireland. Lucy is passionate about supporting people to re-establish connection with themselves, their communities and to nature, of which we are a part. Lucy is particularly interested in rewilding and rekindling the knowledge and skills we once knew so intimately, which connect us to place.Lucy's interests range from ethnobotany to wildlife tracking, ancestral skills to restoring rites of passage. All while leaning into the ways in which we can collectively decolonise our relationship to the land and ourselves and be in reciprocity with life. Lucy is happiest when outside, following the trails of deer across the landscape and nibbling on what nature has to offer. Website: https://www.wildawake.ie/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wildawakeireland/Other Useful Links:Lynx Vilden - https://www.lynxvilden.com/John Rhyder - Wood Craft School - https://www.woodcraftschool.co.uk/Rupert Marquez - Hand On The Earth - https://www.handontheearth.org/Thank you for being a part of this journey with me, please Subscribe to make sure you don't miss our future episodes, and share with your friends to help these messages ripple out across the world. As the impact of the climate crisis unfolds all around us, the reality of what's at stake changes our relationships with each other and the natural world. More and more of us are finding ourselves drawn to reconnect with the land and to build community—to “rewild,” in a sense. But what does it mean to live a wilder life? Is it even attainable or realistic for most of the globe, especially if you live in a densely populated urban area? Our guest on today's show is Lucy O'Hagan, a teacher, forest school leader, wildlife tracker, bushcraft instructor, and the founder of Wild Awake Ireland. Through Wild Awake, Lucy guides people through rites of passage, teaches ancestral skills, and helps people to distill what it means to rewild on a personal and practical level, regardless of where you live.On this episode, we speak with Lucy about the Wild Biome project and what it's like to eat exclusively wild, foraged food for three months; honoring age transitions through nature-based, participatory rituals outside of traditional religious practice; using ancestral skills to understand the role of power and privilege in our modern day lives; and the importance of collaboration and building community in our efforts to reconnect and reengage. Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. On episode 17 of Living Tarot, I interview my friend, Scout Chavers. Scout is an intuitive healer, generational doula and somatic guide in Austin, TX. She guides doula’s, healers and ethically non-monogamous lovers toward radical self acceptance, trust and love throughout transitions in their life through a trauma informed lens. Scout is passionate about alchemizing life experiences, emotions and our innate intuitive wisdom into empowerment and a deep sense of self trust - because she truly believes in rebirthing, reparenting and reclaiming our wellness as our birthright and as a form of activism. Scout’s resourced connection ushers various soul types through discomfort and creates a space for them to arrive to authenticity in their bodies to live WILD + AWAKE. Working with marginalized communities to ensure their birthright of awareness and wellness is truly ancestral work and at the cornerstone of Scout’s community engagement. Scout and I discuss the complexity and exhaustion that she experiences showing up in the wellness community as a queer, black woman. Scout speaks about how her activism has changed over the years. We talk about what led her to doula work and how despite our best efforts at rebellion we are always brought home to our calling. We discuss how intuition has shown up in her ability to be an intuitive healing guide and How she has taken it upon herself to take care of the caretakers in life. We talk about the burden of perfectionism and how to take better care of yourself. I've followed Lucy's work for several years and continue to feel deeply inspired and in awe of the programs that she creates. I've been wanting to interview Lucy for some time now. Firstly to elevate her school, but also, while our organizations are similar in style and content, the cultural and historical context in which they sit is very different. This is something I find interesting and wanted to know more about. If rewilding is to be widely appealing, we need to understand the multiple contexts that make it look and feel different so that we can understand how to appropriately rewild in these contexts. One that stands out to me and is colonialism and how it affects different groups and demographics around the world, and how this influences rewilding. Because travel has changed my life in so many varied ways, I know that it's transformative; when I talk to three other people who believe this, like for this Episode 152 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I'm even more sure about how transformative travel can be. If you're able to rearrange your budget to get travelling then go and do it! In this episode I start off speaking with Dean O'Shea who runs a business devising trips for mostly corporate professionals with the hope that they'll be transformational - and it sounds like it's working. Dean gives me a couple of examples of people he's already helped to have some major life transformations as a result of particular travel experiences. I then chat with Nate Hake who used to be a trial lawyer in the United States. These days he's travelling the world - he was about to head to Tblisi, Georgia when we spoke - and his own life has been substantially transformed through his travel experiences. As an Aussie I'm proud to say there were Australians involved in this transformation, too! Finally, I talk with Fiona Galloway who uses the tag line "transformative travel" to describe the tours she runs. She's passionate about the power of travel to transform lives in so many ways. This time Eric and Tommy get deeper into the separation of humanity from the rest of nature. Tommy also talks to Lucy O'Hagan from Wild Awake about getting back in touch with our roots. As usual there's a decent amount of lefty belligerence. Bakin' n' snowflakin'. Music: Wild Rocket - Blowholes [ wildrocket.bandcamp.com/ ] Illustration: Gareth Curtis [ probablygareth@gmail.com ]

For me, some of the most interesting travel I've done has been the more challenging travel, and that's often when I've travelled to developing or poorer countries. The culture shock is greater, and where there's culture shock, there's learning! - although of course, I always also am reminded that wherever you go, the common denominator is people, and people are really the same across the world. Just the same, travelling in developing countries leads to some really impactful and interesting experiences and the three guests in this episode of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast have great stories to tell about their trips to countries as diverse as Haiti, Madagascar and India. First up, I speak to Fiona Galloway who spent some time in Haiti about twenty years ago. She learnt a lot from her stay in Haiti, and it set her up for her current work running tours for transformative travel. Next I chat to Linda Schlencker who talks about some of the poverty she found away from the key tourist zones of Madagascar. She's travelled widely but was surprised by what she saw there. Finally, I talk with Whitney Taylor who describes an especially impactful trip she took to India with Hands On Journeys.  Links: Thanks to Scrubba - https://www.thescrubba.com - use discount code AMANDA15 for a 15% discount off any Scrubba product Previous episode about Travel in Africa - https://www.notaballerina.com/80 Fiona’s site Wild Awake - https://www.wildawaketravel.com Linda’s site Self Drive Adventures - http://www.selfdriveadventures.com/  Whitney Taylor works with Jito Connected - Inspiring Greatness site - https://jitoconnected.com/inspire/  Join our Facebook group for Thoughtful Travellers - https://www.facebook.com/groups/thoughtfultravellers Show notes: http://notaballerina.com/129
