In each episode, we hear from a pair of friends about their books that will help us celebrate the Jewish holidays. In Festive Friends Part I we heard from Gayle Forman, author of Not Nothing, and Marjorie Ingall, author of Getting to Sorry. Here in Festive Friends Part II, we meet Erica Lyons and Christina Matula. Lately, Kids of mixed heritage have finally been getting their mirror books, and a great example is Erica and Christina's new picture book Mixed-Up Mooncakes, about a Chinese Jewish family celebrating the Mid Autumn Festival and Sukkot. I love the cozy atmosphere of this book, with its double harvest festival fun; and I love the comfortable way in which the Chinese and Jewish cultures are mixed together both literally and figuratively in the story. I invited this duo not only because of their excellent books but because of their Big BFF Energy, which is a joy to behold. This is Gayle's first appearance on the podcast, but Marjorie has been a frequent guest. Her past appearances include: Enough with the Holocaust Books for Children! Fighting sex trafficking is a cause that we are passionate about at Sorry Not Sorry, and our guest this week has made it her life's work. Ruchira Gupta is a former journalist and founder of Apne Aap, an NGO that works to end child sex trafficking. She's the author of the acclaimed new novel I Kick and Fly which is based on her experiences. Praise for I Kick and Fly: "In I Kick and I Fly, Ruchira Gupta has given young readers an irresistible story, and also one that could save lives. This book is a gift." -- Gloria Steinem "Any work from Ruchira Gupta is sure to further the cause of liberating women, especially, and in this novel, girls. It takes a strong belief in us, and especially in our young ones, to persevere as she does in both art and politics. The absolute belief that if the heart is moved, so might be the positive activities for justice and freedom, of the mind." -- Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple "I Kick and I Fly is a powerhouse of a debut. Ruchira Gupta has crafted a page-turner of a read, stepped in place and full of indelible characters, managing to be at once propulsive and enlightening, infuriating and inspiring. But maybe most important, Heera's story is a beacon of hope to a generation of young people trying to transform an unjust world." -- Gayle Forman, New York Times bestselling author of If I Stay and We Are Inevitable "Having been to the brothels and red-light district I Kick and I Fly so searingly captures, I can testify that this book is essential reading for anyone interested in how to empower girls to break free from intergenerational prostitution and sex trafficking. Ruchira Gupta is nothing less than a great hero, and in her book, she has created one in Heera, as she seeks to defy the destiny of rape that poverty and men have assigned her." -- Ashley Judd "An empathetic and unflinching glimpse into a world little known to outsiders. We watch breathlessly, never sure until the very end how she will kick and punch her way past her circumstances to find her own path to freedom." -- Natalie C Anderson "This book is a call to action, it an invitation for the rest of us to rise from the pall of apathy and join the movement to fight and fight and keep fighting―until we retrieve the last girl from the ugly jaws of the very worst effects of the patriarchy." -- Staceyann Chin “Gupta renders Heera's perseverance amid grueling circumstances via straightforward prose and imbues this searing tale with an ominous ambiance that complements its dark themes.” – Publisher's Weekly "The depth of the story's details and its themes of bodily autonomy, community, and women's empowerment reflect Gupta's experience as the founder of Apne Aap, an NGO working to end sex trafficking... atriumphant debut." - Kirkus Reviews --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

In This Episode:The Book Evangelists discuss Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey Morning Chatter: In which we briefly discuss helping our children 3D print their homework. "I have persistence, which is like skills, by the time you finish." -Lissa And we explain how we failed to write our Camp NaNoWriMo projects. "April is the cruelest month." - Marian "Reading is awesome, you should just read." - Lissa "Well, there's always November, you can just recycle your idea then." - Marian Writing and Reading Experiments We both like to use writers challenges and hashtags on Instagram to reflect on and plan our writing projects. https://www.instagram.com/lissastaley/ https://www.instagram.com/marianrakestraw/ Lissa recommends: If you get really obsessed with a book you can go to twitter and find other people who are obsessed with the book. And then the author sees and joins in. Being a reader on twitter is the coolest. From @lissastaley she follows @charliejane and @scalzi and sometimes experiments with other writer's twitter feeds. Marian's brave experiment was joining #revpit on Twitter @marianrakestraw and actively interacting with other writers. She reports back on her survey of writer use of social media. Sometimes we leave the comfort of our reading and writing homes to interact with other writers. Marian attended a literature festival for teenagers, run by teenagers, called LitUp Festival and met multiple amazing authors including Gayle Forman and Jacqueline Woodson. Marian recommends: MasterClass, starting with Neil Gaiman Teaches The Art of Storytelling We reflect on signed copies of books, which books we keep, and sending books out into the world Around the 37 minute mark, we finally discuss Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey at Goodreads. Ivy Gamble has never wanted to be magic. She is perfectly happy with her life—she has an almost-sustainable career as a private investigator, and an empty apartment, and a slight drinking problem. It's a great life and she doesn't wish she was like her estranged sister, the magically gifted professor Tabitha. But when Ivy is hired to investigate the gruesome murder of a faculty member at Tabitha's private academy, the stalwart detective starts to lose herself in the case, the life she could have had, and the answer to the mystery that seems just out of her reach. (description from the publisher) Our discussion doesn't give away the ending but is filled with minor spoilers, so please read the book before you listen if you are into that kind of experience. We'll be here for you when you finish! "It might take a little while to get there, but I'll tell you everything and I'll tell you the truth." the quote from Magic for Liars on tor.com twitter that pulled Lissa in so hard to reading this book. How Lissa chooses books: Unreliable narrator! It's mainstream fantasy! This will be interesting to read with Marian! "On the whole I was impressed, and we know I am not often impressed." Marian We really like this book. As readers. And as writers. We were both delightfully surprised. We talk about the parts we like. We have fun discussing how really original books might reach readers in traditional publishing. Marian: Where would I shelve this in the store? Fantasy? Hard boiled detective? It's very original. It's not like a book that I have read before. Quentin Tarantino’s advice to screenwriters was to delete the last two lines of dialogue from every scene, which Alfred Gough and Miles Millar--creators of Smallville and Into the Badlands shared with me on their recent First Draft episode. Gayle Forman (@gayleforman) is the author of I HAVE LOST MY WAY and the New York Times bestselling IF I STAY. In her newest YA novel Gayle explores the idea that the most important story is the backstory, that all of us come from a place and that one thing informs the next to take us to where we are today. But none of that has to define who we are. It’s a story of losing your way and trying to find it again. It’s a story of coming to realize that we all walk around really, really scared. The Gaithersburg Book Festival happens each May in beautiful, downtown Gaithersburg, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC. This year I was invited to interview bestselling YA author Gayle Forman during one of the festival sessions and I'll be sharing that conversation with you in an upcoming episode, but I also recorded a handful of quick pop-up conversations with authors and illustrators as we crossed paths throughout the day. Please enjoy these brief opportunities to catch up with today's guests, Steve Light (BLACK BIRD YELLOW SUN), Sarah Jacoby (FOREVER OR A DAY), Dan Santat (DUDE!, DRAWN TOGETHER), Megan Wagner Lloyd (FORT-BUILDING TIME), Gareth Hinds (POE: STORIES AND POEM), Hena Khan (POWER FORWARD), Ellen Oh (SPIRIT HUNTERS, We Need Diverse Books), Karina Glaser (THE VANDERBEEKERS OF 141st STREET), and Kate Beasley (LIONS & LIARS). Gayle Forman is an author best known for demolishing readers' hearts. In books like If I Stay ( adapted as a film in 2014) and Just One Day Forman creates characters who feel utterly real, as they wrestle with everything life can throw at them: the explosive power of first love, the wrenching grief of a friend's suicide, or the impact of cold reality on creative dreams. Her latest, the instant bestseller I Have Lost My Way, centers on the fateful meeting of three teens in New York City, each on the verge of a personal cataclysm. In this episode, Gayle Forman joins us to talk about the new book, her world travels, getting real for Seventeen magazine, and celebrating the connections that just feel like fate.
We prove to be less than perfect podcasters: the recording came out a bit too quiet and a lot of compression was used to salvage comments. Things sound a little fuzzy or underwater. (Don't worry Nate and Amy were not forced to discuss this book while underwater.) We manage to discuss National Book Award finalist I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika Sánchez. Kim suggests Ms. Marvel by G. Willow Wilson and Pashmina by Nidhi Chanani. Molly suggests Burn Baby Burn by Meg Medina, Out of Darkness by Ashley Hope Pérez, A Step From Heaven by An Na. Lindsey suggests City of Saints and Thieves by Natalie C. Anderson, I Was Here by Gayle Forman, and the television program Veronica Mars. Nate suggests We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. ¢a$h Mo₦€¥ suggests Gabi a Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero , The First Rule of Punk by Celia C. Pérez, and the film Real Women Have Curves. Nathan suggests "Girlfriend in a Coma" by The Smiths and The Mystery of Hollow Places by Rebecca Podos. Amy suggests Gabi Girl in Pieces as well, and ties up our conversation on Lady Bird.
¡Bienvenido a Travesura Realizada!

A trio of struggling teens meets by chance in Central Park and becomes everything to one another in bestseller Gayle Forman's new YA novel, I HAVE LOST MY WAY. We catch up with Forman in this week’s episode and also see what it was like for Michael Benson to write the definitive account of the making of the film 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Benson's new book is titled SPACE ODYSSEY and it’s fascinating. And our editors reveal which books they think you ought to dig into this week!
"My book is about three young people: Freya, Harun, and Nathaniel. They are complete strangers who have seemingly nothing in common except for this one key thing, which is that each of them, in their own way, is lost. They collide, literally, in New York's Central Park, and that kicks off a day together where they form this intense friendship and a little bit of romance as they kind of come to understand that maybe the way out of their own loss lies is inhabiting one another’s." Native New Yorker Patty Blount is the award-winning author of several critically acclaimed internet issues novels for teens as well as a few contemporary romances for grown ups. She is inspired to write by such greats as Judy Blume, JK Rowling, and Gayle Forman. In fact, Judy Blume is the reason Patty elected to write under her real name…so she’d appear on shelves close to her idol. Patty lives on Long Island with her family and wants you to know she loves chocolate…really, really loves chocolate. When not crushing on actors Gilles Marini or Sam Heughan, Patty can be found sitting in traffic, somewhere on the Long Island Expressway, listening to audio books or talking wildly to herself about plots and characters. Prone to falling madly in love with fictional characters, Patty suffers frequent broken hearts when they all invariably prefer the heroine to her… go figure. When she’s not writing, Patty loves to watch bad sci-fi movies and live tweet the hilarity. http://www.pattyblount.com/ Radio host and author Laura Moe spent most of her working life as a librarian and English teacher in central and Southeastern Ohio, but has recently moved to Seattle where she writes full-time. Moe is the author of YA novels Parallel Lines (Fat Cats, 2015) and Breakfast With Neruda (Merit Press, 2016, ) named by the New York Public Library as one the Best Books for Teens in 2016. When Moe isn't reading, she's writing. This is a copyrighted podcast solely owned by Authors on the Air Global Radio Network, LLC.

Welcome to the Totally Normal podcast where getting drunk and talking about books is totally normal. For Boozy Book Club our September books were Gayle Forman’s Leave Me and Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. One was the adult debut of one of our favorite Young Adult authors, and one is the highly acclaimed fantasy novel that we are super anticipating coming to our TV screens and laptops on Starz next year. Amy and Beth were joined by Hangout newbies: Courtney and Danelle. We had a great time trying to figure out why we just couldn’t relate to Gayle Forman’s protagonist Maribeth and why American Gods is totally and completely indelible. We hope you enjoy this Boozy Book Club and join us for the month of October as we read Melina Marchetta’s newest Tell the Truth Shame the Devil and The Regulars by Georgia Clark. We will see you Tuesday, Nov 1st at 10pm EST for another live Hangout. View us here LIVE! Join our Book Club on Goodreads!
