Do you consider yourself to be a rational person? If so, Scott Adams (a.k.a. “The Dilbert Guy”), has some bad news for you.On today's show, we attempt to surmount our various cognitive dissonances and confirmation biases to better understand “How to See Reality in a More Useful Way,” according to the third chapter of Scott Adams's 2017 pseudo-rhetorical quasi-treatise, Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don't Matter. This chapter takes us headlong into Scott's psychology, charting his journey through various “filters” he developed to help him “predict the future” at various stages in his life: among them, the “Santa Claus filter,” the “Alien Experiment filter,” and most ridiculous of all, his self-proclaimed current “Moist Robot filter.” This one has to be heard to be believed, trust us.Among other topics covered in this chapter are Scott's “two movie” theory of reality, and his assertion that beliefs are really just “mass delusions” that determine how we react to new events and information. As usual, this chapter uncovers yet another layer of Scott's solipsistic nihilism toward the world and its social dynamics. It also contains a whole section on how to become a trained hypnotist. He's a man of many talents, folks. An accessible transcript of this episode can be found here

Are you winning bigly? No? Neither is Scott Adams, the infamous cartoonist, blogger, and self-proclaimed “expert predictor”, whose formerly ubiquitous comic strip Dilbert was recently pulled from national syndication. In September, Dilbert featured “anti-woke” content caricaturing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the corporate world, and it was promptly “cancelled” by Lee Enterprises, owner of about 100 newspapers that had formerly carried the strip. Nevertheless, back in 2017, Adams claimed to be an expert on the subject of winning–as well as communication and “political reality”–in his book / political manifesto Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don't Matter. Adams famously predicted that Trump would win the 2016 election, and he grounds most of the book's arguments in the ostensible ethos he has garnered from this single successful prediction.Win Bigly is the subject of our latest re:joinder episode, in which Alex reads some of its most head-scratching passages for Sophie and Calvin, and all three co-hosts learn far less than they expected to about what makes Donald Trump a “master persuader.” We do our best to make sense of Adams' arguments before picking apart their most spurious assumptions: Adams' questionable narrative of the 2016 election, his bizarre heuristic / coding scheme for “persuaders” (from “weapons-grade”, to “cognitive scientist”, down to “commercial grade”... ?), as well as his overall epistemology and ethics, featuring the claims that Trump's victory “blew a hole in the fabric of reality,” and that this is a good thing -- not politically, but because it proved Scott Adams right. All told, Adams draws on his questionable credentials as a business person, communication expert, and philosopher to provide one of the most bizarre analyses of Donald Trump's rhetoric ever written. This is (probably) part one in a series, since we were only able to get through the introduction. Please join us for future installments! Traveling During Thanksgiving Week | Guest: Scott Adams Now in paperback, and updated with a new afterword, Adams’ NYTBestseller takes an unflinching look at the strategies Donald Trump used to prompt mass delusion among both Democrats and Republicans. WIN BIGLY Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don’t Matter By: Scott Adams In the summer of 2015, Scott Adams was in the middle of an unplanned career pivot from “guy who created the Dilbert comic” to a maverick political pundit. A week after Nate Silver put Trump’s odds at 2% in his FiveThirtyEight.com blog, Adams predicted on his own blog that Trump had a 98% chance of winning the presidency based on his persuasion skills. Now Adams explains how he knew so early that Trump wasn’t simply a lucky clown, taking readers inside one of the most important perceptual shifts in the history of humankind. In the paperback edition of his New York Times Bestseller, WIN BIGLY: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don’t Matter (Portfolio, October 30, 2018), Adams draws upon his background in hypnosis, persuasion and business to reveal the method in Trump's supposed madness, painting him as a “Master Persuader” who intentionally flipped the political narrative on its head. With the addition of a “one-year-later” afterword, Adams deconstructs the tactics Trump used to persuade his way to the White House, including: • Linguistic Kill Shots – Learn how Trump branded his opponents with persuasive nicknames that wouldn’t wash off. We all remember Low Energy Jeb, Lyin’ Ted, and Crooked Hillary. Find out why those names worked so well. • Setting the table – it is easier to persuade someone who already believes you are persuasive. By publishing the bestseller, Art of the Deal in 1987, Trump positioned himself as a stellar negotiator, and as a result, Americans expected he would be persuasive. • Visual Persuasion – Sight is our dominant sense. Find out how Trump consistently used weapons-grade visual persuasion (For example, “the wall”) while his opponents tried to sell invisible concepts.   Making it clear that he did not agree with the policies of either candidate, Adams uses Trump’s historic presidential run to reveal truths about how humans are influenced, and how readers can copy those skills – for better or for worse. (We hope you use your new powers for good.) SCOTT ADAMS is the creator of Dilbert, one of the most popular comic strips of all time. He has been a full-time cartoonist since 1995, after 16 years working in the technology realm at a major bank and later a phone company. His many bestsellers include The Dilbert Principle, Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook, and How To Fail At Almost Everything And Still Win Big. He is co-founder of WhenHub. He lives outside of San Francisco. For more on Adams, visit www.blog.dilbert.com, and be sure to follow him on Twitter, @ScottAdamsSays. Learn more about your ad choices. It's Scott's 3rd time on the podcast. In the first interview, he was "the creator of Dilbert." A famous cartoonist. The second time he was still "the creator of Dilbert" and a hypnosis/persuasion student. Now (appearance #3), Scott Adams is something new. He's reinvented. And no longer standing on the footbridge between old self and new self. He's the author of "Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don't Matter" and infamous for predicting Trump's win... two years before election day. His prediction was spot on. Before Trump raced Hillary. Before he beat Ted Cruz in the primaries. And before he beat 18 other "more experienced" Republican candidates (Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, Ben Carson, and the ones who's names I can't remember.) Scott could name each persuasion trick Trump was using. His tone, the stories he told, the way he made you remember him, his thoughts, plans, policies, tweets. And how he's still doing it to us today. I wanted to know how he knew. But I also wanted to know how he changes his career. And his life. "I came in through the side entrance," he said. "Why?" ""Look how hard it is to change to fields. And so so dramatically. The hardest sell is convincing someone you're not what you've been for decades... Or convincing them that you have more to offer," he said. "Right." And then I realized we hadn't even talked about cartooning. And the interview was almost done. He taught me the most important rule for persuading anyone of anything: facts don't matter. "What makes news and what makes people care is if you do something in a different way," he said. New doesn't matter. New and different matters. "In this case, I'm talking about politics, but I'm talking about persuasion. That was a different way. That immediately gets people's attention. And they say, 'Oh a new thing. Finally, there's a new thing. Let's talk about the new thing." In this episode, Scott teaches you that it's possible change someone's perspective of you. That you can break free of the titles and jobs you hold and become who you really feel you are. He'll walk you through how he did it... how President Trump did it, and how you can do it, too. On August 5, 2015, Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight predicted that Donald Trump had a 2 percent chance of winning the presidency. That same day, Scott Adams, creator of the beloved comic strip, “Dilbert”, predicted that Trump had a 98 percent chance of winning the 2016 presidential election. Adams based his prediction on his knowledge of hypnotism, communication patterns and sales techniques. He distilled what he saw into a new book, “Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don’t Matter”, and shared some of those lessons with Rick Ungar and guest co-host Robert Traynham. Brian Harding of the Center for American Progress discusses the objectives and rhetoric we can expect from President Trump on his upcoming trip across Asia.
