In this class, we talk about how facts aren't as important as they used to be. Based on Scott Adams' book *Win Bigly*, we explore how people can twist facts and why they don't hold as much power today. I'll explain how persuasion often matters more than the truth when people make decisions. Join me as we look at why facts are losing their impact and how that changes the way we communicate. Show Notes: [11:45]#1 Human beings have always been subject to strong persuasion. [19:18]#2 The democratization of publishing has made it easy to create and consume your own chosen facts. [24:48]#3 First impressions are lasting for most humans and most humans are not critical thinkers. “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”The challenges we've all faced in the last several years have reaffirmed the need for men to step up as strong leaders in our families, communities, and governments. People who demonstrate the capacity to stand up for what's right, regardless of what pressures they face from circumstances or others' expectations. But with masculinity under attack and the average young man not having access to the tools he needs to grow into a true leader, it's critical to create an environment for men to come together to learn these things.Patrick Francey of REIN is a distinguished thought leader and multiple business owner with a wealth of experience in navigating turbulent times. The cognitive scientists at re:verb couldn't get enough of Win Bigly, Scott Adams' bizarre treatise on persuasion in a supposedly post-fact era. After tackling the introduction in December (listen to the first installment here!), we bring you our reading and re:joinder critique the first full chapter, which discusses why ordinary people like us fail to grasp reality for what it is: a mere plaything of the mastermind behind Dilbert. From Adams' ramblings, Alex, Calvin, and Sophie unearth top-secret persuasion techniques, such as lying, making speling errors, and incorrectly citing facts.Disclaimer: These techniques are not proven to convince anyone of anything, only to garner attention and “distort reality.” And according to Adams, manipulations of “reality” and “truth” should not be used by we ordinary folk - only Master Persuaders™ like Trump can handle their raw power. In this episode, we tackle the big question at the heart of this chapter: is it ethical to intentionally mislead an audience while trying to persuade them? Since our December episode, Dilbert is no longer in print in any newspaper after Scott Adams referred to Black people as a "hate group" on his "Real Coffee with Scott Adams" livestream. He now posts "Dilbert Reborn" comics on Locals, a right-wing subscription site, where Dogbert et al can wax cynical on "wokeness" to their hearts' content.Join Calvin, Alex, and Sophie in their Chipmunks-inspired squeakquel to Win Bigly, because a mere sequel wouldn't do it justice. An accessible transcript of this episode can be accessed here
Are you winning bigly? No? Neither is Scott Adams, the infamous cartoonist, blogger, and self-proclaimed “expert predictor”, whose formerly ubiquitous comic strip Dilbert was recently pulled from national syndication. In September, Dilbert featured “anti-woke” content caricaturing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the corporate world, and it was promptly “cancelled” by Lee Enterprises, owner of about 100 newspapers that had formerly carried the strip. Nevertheless, back in 2017, Adams claimed to be an expert on the subject of winning–as well as communication and “political reality”–in his book / political manifesto Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don't Matter. Adams famously predicted that Trump would win the 2016 election, and he grounds most of the book's arguments in the ostensible ethos he has garnered from this single successful prediction.Win Bigly is the subject of our latest re:joinder episode, in which Alex reads some of its most head-scratching passages for Sophie and Calvin, and all three co-hosts learn far less than they expected to about what makes Donald Trump a “master persuader.” We do our best to make sense of Adams' arguments before picking apart their most spurious assumptions: Adams' questionable narrative of the 2016 election, his bizarre heuristic / coding scheme for “persuaders” (from “weapons-grade”, to “cognitive scientist”, down to “commercial grade”... ?), as well as his overall epistemology and ethics, featuring the claims that Trump's victory “blew a hole in the fabric of reality,” and that this is a good thing -- not politically, but because it proved Scott Adams right. All told, Adams draws on his questionable credentials as a business person, communication expert, and philosopher to provide one of the most bizarre analyses of Donald Trump's rhetoric ever written. This is (probably) part one in a series, since we were only able to get through the introduction. Please join us for future installments! Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, has since written self-help books like 'Win Bigly' & 'Loserthink' and now hosts his own podcast "Coffee with Scott Adams". In mild-mannered, folksy, and avuncular style, he has a 'simultaneous sip' of coffee, a little chuckle with his listeners, and then they chat about the events of the day and how democracy is a farce and maybe a benevolent dictatorship would be preferable. Scott's fatherly advice is geared towards one thing: undermining your belief that there is any truth or justice in world - or that these things are even possible. You can trust literally nobody. All systems are corrupt, and the world works through the exercise of naked power and the manipulation of gullible rubes like you. It doesn't even matter if the libs stole the election. Trump should just go ahead and take it, if he can. Scott Adams considers himself a Master Persuader and he uses every rhetorical trick in the book to persuade you that America is so corrupt to try and get you to agree that a benevolent dictator would probably be preferable at this point. Think of the kind of 'helpful advice' that Wormtongue used to demoralise Théoden in Lord of the Rings. It's really horrible... So, if this sounds like fun to you, join Chris and Matt as they go to hell and become increasingly depressed throughout the episode! The real storm is finally here. The forces of darkness have overplayed their demonic hand. President Trump was re-elected in a landslide on November 3. All of the forces of evil: Soros, Obama, Clinton, Brennan, Dorsey, Gates, the #BidenCrimeFamily et al thought they could get away with the biggest political crime in American history, and steal our country out from under US before our very eyes. EPIC FAIL! The Kraken has been released, the truth will out. Donald Trump always looks like he is going to lose right before he wins...and thank God, in this case, he will win for US ALL. In the end God always wins. God bless America, pray for President Donald Trump, and what lays ahead during his second administration. It will be glorious. Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report talks to "Dilbert" creator Scott Adams, author of "Win Bigly," about his election predictions, the media bias against Donald Trump, and why you shouldn't trust election polls. Scott discusses why he thinks the media still pushes the “fine people hoax” despite all the evidence proving the contrary. Scott also has a good reason not to trust the national polls, since he has heard from many Trump supporters who have lied to pollsters. Finally, Scott discusses the dangers of creating a social media business on big tech platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube when you could be thrown off at a moment's notice. For the 100th episode of Hold These Truths - Scott Adams returns! From the California wildfires to the pandemic response to the psychological motivations behind Antifa, Scott brings us his unique perspective on the events dominating America today. Scott Adams is a cartoonist and creator of "Dilbert", writer, and certified hypnotist. Despite evidence to the contrary, we all use our brains. BUT - most of us have never learned how to think effectively. We’re not talking about IQ or innate intelligence, we’re talking about thinking as a LEARNED SKILL. We’re talking about a productive method of thinking and reasoning. Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert cartoons, author of How To Fail At Almost Everything And Still Win Big and Win Bigly, calls this ‘Loserthink’. Loserthink doesn’t mean ‘dumb’ or ‘uninformed’, it simply means unproductive or ineffective. It’s not a value judgement of a person as a whole, just on this specific method of evaluation. Plenty of ‘smart’ and ‘well-informed’ people are culprits of using Loserthink (and in some cases, they are MORE susceptible). You use Loserthink because you’ve never learned or practiced the SKILL of thinking effectively. What this book presents is a method for thinking. By borrowing some fundamental techniques from various different fields, we can develop our thinking skills and become much more effective. If we borrow ideas from how to think like a historian, how to think like an entrepreneur, how to think like an engineer, how to think like a scientist - we can cobble together an effective process for thinking.
I read Scott Adam's Win Bigly a couple years after the election of Donald Trump, and it was then that I realized what happened in that election. Up until then, I thought it was a bit lucky with some skill combined with the fact he was up against a hubristic Democrat party and the most unlikeable candidate in recent history. "In making a speech one must study three points: first, the means of producing persuasion; second, the language; third the proper arrangement of the various parts of the speech." -Aristotle In his book, Scott Adams shows that this was no fluke, and describes the tactics that the Trump campaign used to take the white house. While this sounds like a political book, it really is a modern version of How to Win Friends and Influence People. You'll learn the strategy, tactics, and overall art of persuading people. Grab your copy of Win Bigly here. This book offers a lot of insight into how effective political messaging is (and really any sort of marketing message), but it does so without rooting for a political party. Scott Adams doesn't let his political beliefs get in the way of observing how effective politicians are. And, I think that is yet another lesson we can learn from this book. Social media is a powerful tool. If it weren’t for the good social media has done, you likely wouldn’t be tuned into this podcast right now. That said, it seems to me that the use of social media is making us dumber or, at least, encouraging us to behave that way. My guest today, Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, joins me to talk about exactly why that is and the type of thinking he refers to as “Loserthink.” It’s also the title of his new book subtitled, How Untrained Brains are Ruining America. Today, we talk about the fact that being right and being wrong feel the same, how to determine what battles to fight online, how shaming and mockery can be used positively, and ultimately how you can avoid thinking like a loser. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Augmenting your intelligence Wrestling with social media A “slippery slope” Linear thinking Predictable variables to success Influencing other people Enlightened selfishness Succeeding at systems Mental addiction Adding to your talent stack There’s always a deeper level Engaging in “loser think” Determining a stranger’s thoughts SCOTT ADAMS Gents, I am stoked to be able to introduce you to my guest today, Scott Adams. Scott is the creator of Dilbert and the bestselling author of Win Bigly and his new book, Loserthink. Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report talks to Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert, author of “Win Bigly”) about his new book “Loserthink” and many other topics. In addition to being a comic artist he is considered by some to be a political philosopher for his analysis of the persuasive ways of Donald Trump. He discusses “talent stacking”, the idea that you should focus on building a variety of complementary nonexpert skills as opposed to focusing on one particular skill. He describes how the talent stack he built up enabled him to go from being an employee of Pacific Bell to a famous comic artist. He details how his insights on Donald Trump has cost him many friends, but also a significant amount of his income. He talks about how he never had any major plans for his “Real Coffee with Scott Adams” periscope vlogs including the simultaneous sip, but that it naturally grew in popularity. He also details what Loserthink is, and how you can avoid falling victim to it. Scott also shares what he believes to be the worst advice you could ever get. Scott also gives his thoughts on Joe Biden, his surprising thoughts on AOC as well as his predictions for future candidates and which ones could pose a serious threat in 2020.
Scott Adams is probably best known for creating "Dilbert", an awesome series of cartoon strips. He has an amazing, extremely informative, self-titled periscope, where he operates as our fellow colleague and podcast host sometimes even twice a day. Here you can hear and feel his vast experience regarding hypnosis and persuasion, as well as have a nice cup of coffee! His books are probably the "crown jewels" of his work, with all of them being part of my all time favorite books, including "Win Bigly", and "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life", as well as his newest book which we talk about in detail during this Episode, called "Loserthink". Thank you to Scott, it's been a pleasure to have him and to promote ALL of his work. Enjoy!
Just how are people today actually trapped in mental prisons they’re not aware of? Could this be the reason for a lot of today’s political and social discord? What exactly is “loserthink,” as conceived by author and cartoonist Scott Adams? And what strategies could be used to help people get out of their ideological bubbles? Win Bigly - by Scott Adams 'Persuasion in a world where facts don't matter' This book is all about persuasion, and it's phenomenal. Scott Adams uses the 2016 U Presidential campaign to dissect and tools and techniques of persuading others, both on an individual level and to the masses. Things like 'cognitive dissonance' and 'confirmation bias' make it possible for persuasion to work, and Adams shows us things we can use ourselves, like the 'high ground maneuver' and 'two ways to win, no ways to lose'. Recorded on July 12, 2017 The Dilbert comic strip artist and political philosopher Scott Adams sits down with Peter Robinson to discuss his book How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big. He discusses with Peter his theory of “talent stacking,” the idea that rather than being an expert in one particular skill (i.e., Tiger Woods and golf), one can become successful by stacking a variety of complementary nonexpert skills. Adams demonstrates how talent stacking has been beneficial in his life because he has stacked comic artist skills with his MBA and experience in corporate environments to create a wildly successful comic strip that resulted in spin-off books, a television series, a video game, and merchandise. His business skills gave him the tools to create a business satire comic strip and the skill set to manage the business that evolved from that strip. Adams also discusses how he uses his Dilbert blog to discuss his political philosophies and observations about the Trump administration. He wrote blogposts about the 2016 election and predicted that Donald Trump would win based on President Trump’s talent stack as a media mogul and businessman who had spent significant time in the public eye so was immune to scandals and thick-skinned enough to handle what the media and other politicians would throw at him. Adams argues that President Trump is one of the best branders, influencers, and persuaders he has ever seen, in that the president uses persuasive techniques in debates and on social media as a way to get people to do what he wants. Adams contends that President Trump’s persuasive techniques will help solve the problem of North Korea because he has already set up China to get involved by intimating that it tried and failed. Adams believes this will cause China to get involved to save face. Scott Adams and Peter Robinson finish by chatting about Adams’s views on the story arc of life. Adams says that he believes he started intentionally selfish so that by the end of his life he can give away all of his wealth, knowledge, and wisdom, a process he says he has already begun. They also briefly discuss his new book, Win Bigly, about the persuasive strategies of Donald Trump. Scott Adams is releasing his new book, Win Bigly, in October 2017. (Playing time: 43:32)
