Episode #19: The Power of Metabolic Flexibility: How to Achieve Optimal Health

Episode Summary: In this insightful episode of Functional Health Radio, Dr. Kristin Hieshetter takes her listeners on an intimate journey through her personal experiences with health, diet, and intermittent fasting. She provides compelling insights into how various dietary practices have affected her well-being and discusses the significant shifts in her nutritional approach over the years. From grappling with family health history to embracing a Paleo diet and metabolic flexibility, Dr. Hieshetter shares her transformative health journey, one that could inspire many to reconsider their own dietary habits. Dr. Hieshetter's discussion delves into the perils of modern eating habits, the importance of listening to one's body, and the power of learning from nutritional research. With an aim to demystify complex health topics such as autophagy, glycation, and metabolic flexibility, she equips listeners with the data and anecdotes necessary to understand the impacts of their food choices. Through her own story, Dr. Hieshetter emphasizes the need for a tailored approach to nutrition, addressing individual needs and health goals. Key Takeaways: Everything consumed either immediately helps or harms the body; striving for a diet that is beneficial 80%-85% of the time can lead to positive health changes. Metabolic flexibility, the body's ability to seamlessly switch between using ketones and glucose for energy, is essential for successful intermittent fasting without negative side effects. Consuming the largest meal between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. can help manage blood sugar levels due to lower insulin levels during these hours. Avoiding grains and embracing a Paleo diet, composed mainly of vegetables, high-quality meats, and healthy fats, helped Dr. Hieshetter improve her overall health and navigate her pregnancies effectively. Veganism and other dietary practices can be healthy if they are well-balanced, and supplementation is used to fill in nutritional gaps. Notable Quotes: "Everything we take into our bodies either immediately helps us or immediately harms us. There is no neutral." "So many people who attempt intermittent fasting who don't have metabolic flexibility, they feel absolutely terrible." "You don't want to be glycating your tissues before bed because it will age you very, very quickly." "Eat for quality, not quantity. Eat to live, don't live to eat." Resources: The following resources were mentioned in the episode: Scott Watier and Tim's podcast on intermittent fasting. Dr. David Seaman's work on inflammation and nutrition. "Eat Right for Your Blood Type" book. "Grain Brain" by Dr. David Perlmutter. "Wheat Belly Diet" and "Undoctored" by Dr. William Davis. "Primal Body, Primal Mind" and "Primal Fat Burner" books by Nora Gedgaudas. The Weston A. Price Foundation website for finding reputable food sources. Tune in to the full episode to dive deep into Dr. Kristin Hieshetter's personal health journey, gain an understanding of nutritional best practices, and uncover ways to implement lasting changes for a healthier lifestyle. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:  Christina: Hi Dr. Cabral. What do you think about eating for your blood type? I've been reading the book “Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type” and find it particularly interesting. Any comments or thoughts on this?   Ryan: Hello, I have been wondering if you know anything about the approximate ratio of black pepper to turmeric is needed to get the benefits of the bioperine? I don't want to get too much into the micro here but also would like to know practically if a tiny grind from the shaker is enough or if larger amounts are needed? Thanks in advance.   Cindy: Dr Cabral, I listened to Episode 760 on killing viruses. It talks about the need to ramp up your immune system, however, I have an autoimmune thyroid,(Hashimotos) and was told to avoid things that ramp up my immune system, because the immune system has already gone rogue, and it could cause the body to attack itself even more. For instance, I read to avoid echinacea and Holy Basil. Can you clear this up because I certainly would like to support immune system without causing issues with my autoimmunity. I listen all the time, so thanks for your help on this issue. Cindy   Liz: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thank you for putting so much time and effort into your podcasts; it's clear that you have a drive and a need to help people help themselves! I've learned a lot over the past couple of years. My question is, what do you think of fucoxanthin supplements to aid in fat loss? I haven't been able to find a lot of information on it, but what I have seen seems promising. It's hard to find though, and I question the quality of the supplements I have been able to find. Is fucoxanthin legit? And if so how do I find a source I can trust? Thank you!   Bob: Hi Dr. Cabral. Love the podcast and your unbias approach to everything you cover. I know you have a lot of content on Intermittent Fasting so I apologize if my question has already been addressed, but I'm wondering what breaks a fast when doing Intermittent Fasting? I'll start my morning w/ some organic non-caffeinated herbal tea (typically some Roasted Dandelion Root or Rose Hips & Hibiscus by Traditional Medicinals, or Lemon Ginger plus Probiotics by Bigelow). Would that break my fast? Also curious about supplements. Would taking a supplement pill first thing in the morning or right before bed break a fast?   Crystal: Hi Dr. Cabral! I am 25 and have struggled with my weight my entire life. When I was in high school, I got very slim but then gained over 100 pounds between ages 19-20. I was then diagnosed at 20 with PCOS which has resulted in chronic dry eye syndrome and hypothyroidism. I went vegan shortly after I was diagnosed for ethical and health reasons. I was able to lose the majority of the weight, but in the past year have put a lot back on. Even with listening to your previous podcasts on PCOS, doing slow weighted workouts and steady cardio with balanced, high-protein meals, the weight does not want to shed. I'm at a loss for what to do and was wondering if you could recommend a certain diet/protocol? I want to mention that because I'm vegan and aiming to eat higher protein meals, I often use faux meats to meet my macro goals. I sway towards cleaner products, but many have PUFAs, which I know you say causes inflammation. Could this be a reason I'm not losing weight? Do I have to give these up to reach my goals? What are some better protein sources for vegans besides beans, tofu, and tempeh? Thank you so much! I so value your work and expertise, and am so grateful for your podcast and deep care for peoples' health! My guest this week is Ashley James. Ashley actually had me on her podcast a few weeks ago.  We had planned to focus on anxiety in this episode, which we did spend a good bit of time talking about. But we also talked a lot about general health and nutrition, and the important role of diet in our physical and mental health. This is a topic that’s gotten a lot more attention in recent years. For some reason it was quite controversial for a long time to suggest that what we put in our mouths could affect our minds and spirits, and could contribute to conditions like anxiety and depression. But now that the research studies are being done, we’re starting to realize how important diet can be—not just for our physical health, but for our overall well-being. We also talked a lot about the body’s stress response and the release of cortisol through the HPA axis, and of adrenaline through our sympathetic nervous system (our body’s fight-or-flight stress system). And in the second half of our discussion, Ashley offers a simple technique that can lower anxiety and turn down the stress response. Other topics we explored included: The many chronic conditions Ashley recovered from Taking responsibility for our own health The tendency to move toward what we’re focused on, even if it’s what we don’t want Dr. Peter D'adamo's bestselling book Eat Right for Your Blood Type (affiliate link) The premise of eating in line with our genetic history What adrenal fatigue is The three phases of the stress response: Alarm, Resistance, Exhaustion The benefits Ashley found from eating all organic food How we often beat ourselves up for our health struggles The body’s ability to heal itself, given the right conditions What triggers anxiety The role of diet in anxiety The focus of anxiety on what we don’t want to happen in the future The importance of magnesium for healthy physiological processes A cognitive technique for lowering anxiety Focusing on what we want vs. what we don’t want How we’re not fully ourselves in stress mode How the body diverts resources for survival in times of stress The possible danger in trying to get rid of anxiety What to do if anxiety reduction techniques don’t work Ashley James is a master practitioner and trainer of neurolinguistics programming (NLP), and also practices time line therapy, hypnosis, and coaching. As a reiki master, she has taught healers how to incorporate energy work into their practice. Ashley hosts the Learn True Health podcast, which connects listeners with experts, naturopaths, and holistic health practitioners.
