What's up podcast! In this episode, I'm discussing some recent changes I've had to make in my approach to nutrition. Spoiler alert--I gotta eat more fat! And ease up on fasting. I basically ended up losing too much weight with strict 2 meals a day, high P:E ratio. With my exercise regimen--4am workouts (weights/cardio)--I simply have to eat more to sustain myself and maintain weight. If you're less active than that, you can probably get away with a very high protein to energy ratio! Meaning higher protein, moderate fat carnivore plan. I did for the past two years. This week's Flash Back Friday takes us to episode 81, from March 2012 Join Jason Hartman and author of Primal Body, Primal Mind, Nora Gedgaudas, as they explore the negative effects of stress and anxiety on our brains and how nutrition is essential to a healthy brain. Nora explains how high levels of stress causes dumps of cortisol, leaving the brain “marinating” in it, and how it breaks down the temporal portion of the brain. Doctors tend to accept this breakdown as a sign of aging, but Nora says this is simply not the case. Just because something seems commonplace does not mean it is normal. Nutrition plays such an incredible role in our overall health. Our food and water sources have changed to something completely unrecognizable to our ancestors, who ingested animal fat and protein primarily and were stronger and more disease-free. When we're stressed, we often crave carbohydrates and this comes from the body expecting it because that's what we're feeding it. Nora describes how sugar is like kindling for the metabolic fire, burning quickly and constantly needing to be replenished. Contrary to today's popular beliefs and fads, the fuel our bodies are designed to run on will surprise you. Nora provides insight into how to end the cravings and rollercoaster dieting, and also explains the problems with vegan and vegetarian diets, and talks about gluten sensitivity, the rise in inflammatory issues and autoimmune dysfunctions. Nora, welcome back to the show. Nora Oh, thanks, Guy and Stu. Thank you so much. It's great to be back here with you guys again. It's been a while. Stu Yes, it has. Guy Yeah, it's been a while. I was looking this morning, and it's been four years. Can you believe it? That's how quickly- Stu My word. Nora You know, I think I made my first sort of splash in Australia back in either 2009 or 2010, so it's been a while since the release of my last book, and everything that's transpired. So yeah, it's time. Guy Yeah. Life is brilliant, and I have to say, that last book of yours, Primal Body, Primal Mind, I mean that was pivotal in changing the way we thought as well all them years ago. Did you expect it to go on and be so successful as it is when you wrote it? Nora [00:04:00] Oh, no. God, no. I wrote that book just because I had all this stuff I had to get out of me, and I thought I would just put it all in one place in a way I could feel good about. And I initially self-published because I wanted ... I had ideas about that. It wasn't a bad thing to do, but I had horrible editorial problems, and there were a lot of problems with the self-published version. And then I had a bigger publisher come along and say, "No, we love this. It's amazing. We would love to publish it." But it took on a life of its own. I really had no idea it was going to do what it did. I think I would have planned my life very differently had I known. [00:05:00] And suddenly, I was seeing clients eight to 10 hours a day, and then on evenings and weekends, I had to spend answering the 100 or more emails that were coming in every day about that book and doing interviews. And then I was asked to do a radio show, so I did that. All these things started happening. Yeah, it made my life really, really ... Well, actually, my life is still pretty crazy as a result of all this. But it was something ... It wasn't by design. Let's just say I didn't write Primal Body, Primal Mind with marketing in mind at all. Had I done that, had I intended to, I went about it in a really stupid fashion because what I did was I wrote 15 books in one is essentially what I did with that one. Audio Question from Keerthi (00:48:42) He heard you say on the podcast that eating toast with scrambled eggs can cause oxidation of the fatty acids and that is not good for your health. He has also heard you say that it is good to mix fats with starches to reduce the Glycemic Index of those starches. Sounds like a mixed message? He wants to know how much fat he can safely add to the carbs (how much ghee in white rice)? Also does it matter what type of fats? Audio Question from Seth (00:58:28)Just finished the 70.3 in Muskoka where he had a new issue of cramping in his quads about a half mile into the run. The cramps were bad enough that he had to walk. Has worked with a coach to improve his efficiency. Has never cramped on the bike. He had decent fuelling and had to pee 5 times during the race. Could he have leaked out all his electrolytes?
