Minister of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless opened Maynooth University's Digital Health Summer School, which unveiled a new vision for digital health in Ireland, outlined with demonstrations of 10 healthcare innovations that could revolutionise the Irish healthcare system. Opening the Innovation Value Institute's 3rd International Digital Health Summer School, Minister Lawless said: "Today's event exemplifies higher education's potential to profoundly impact society, showcasing Maynooth University's commitment to innovation beyond academia." The Summer School unveiled a digital health initiative, named Mission 10X, to deliver healthcare in Ireland that is 10 times faster, cheaper and smarter than that offered by the current system and that also enables comprehensive patient-managed care. Speaking at the event, Professor Martin Curley, Director of the Digital Health Ecosystem at IVI, said: " "The best way to predict the future is to innovate it. We have all the knowledge and technology to build and scale a world-class health and wellness system - powered by open, intelligent technology and centred on patients, not paperwork." He added that Mission 10X, which is based on 10 actionable recommendations, was fully aligned with Irish health strategy Sláintecare and its adoption would allow Ireland to leapfrog from last in Europe to world leader in digital health. At the core of the new plan is SPINE, or Secure Patient Information Network Exchange, an individual electronic health record system which already supports over 15,000 patients in Ireland. It aims to improve patient outcomes, health economics, clinician experience and productivity by addressing patient information fragmentation. Mission 10X recommends a phased investment in SPINE, starting with an initial €10 million feasibility study scaling to a €100 million nationwide deployment that would see every citizen offered a personal electronic health record. Other healthcare innovations demonstrated at the two-day event which could form part of an integrated Irish digital health ecosystem, included: An AI-integrated smartwatch capable of real-time fall detection, direct care operator communication and instant patient record updates AI-driven screening technology deployable at pharmacies, GP practices, primary care centres and homes, to bring proactive screening into local settings Voice AI technology providing multi-lingual communication and customised podcasts to improve patient understanding and adherence Voicing support for the plan, Dr John Sheehan of Blackrock Health, said: "With a modest initial investment of €10 million, Ireland can create a scalable digital health system, mirroring Estonia's successful model. This is a historical opportunity we cannot afford to miss." Others attending the Summer School included Danny McCoy, IBEC chief executive, who said: "Despite Ireland's wealth and EU digital rankings, we lag in digital healthcare. Mission 10X provides an essential leapfrog solution that we must adopt immediately." Stephen McMahon, Head of the Irish Patients' Association, also backed the move to digital healthcare: "This is a digital health revolution - a beacon of hope and healing for patients today and future generations. Mission 10X shows that together, we truly can transform healthcare." Watch Prof Curley explain Mission 10X, the initiative which aims to provide Ireland with a world-leading digital healthcare system. Best Advice from Best in Show Judge, Roz Kramer Roz Kramer, Best in Show judge for Westminster Kennel Club last week, joins host Laura Reeves with advice, stories, suggestions and tips for all exhibitors. On judging Best in Show at Westminster [caption id="attachment_12915" align="alignleft" width="255"] Kaz Hosaka, winning BIS at WKC with the Miniature Poodle, Sage.[/caption] “You know, you're sequestered and so you don't really know who you're getting and they come in the ring one at a time and it was one gorgeous dog after another. “I mean, all of them showed like a million bucks. They all looked wonderful, fabulous condition. And it gave me goosebumps. It really did. I was so happy and so thrilled. On her mentors “I have had three incredible mentors for me Annie (Rogers Clark), Janey and Bob (Forsyth). I had so much respect for the three of them. Annie, she was such a teacher in many ways. I never worked for any of them, but you saw them at shows all the time and they'd give you little hints or little suggestions all the time and or you'd just sit and listen to them and you'd learn. On how newer exhibitors can succeed “You should stick around (after showing in the ring), learn your history of your breed, learn who the greats of the breed were, learn your pedigrees, figure out who the best multiple breeders of your breed, and it wouldn't matter if they're ones on the west coast and ones in Texas and ones in Maine. Seek those people out, learn the best you can. And then if you get a dog, don't be afraid to go, not just ask other breeders for help on trimming or showing. “I'm telling you, you go to most of these handlers, it doesn't matter who they are, they are more than willing to help. We need the new people in the sport and everybody knows it and I think that what people also need to do is don't think that you're better than everybody else, be kind and caring to people because you know something, we all have to ask for help at some point in our lives and don't be afraid to. “You know one of the ways that I learned when I was a kid is my mentor on the Scotty's John Sheehan. He'd trim the show side and then he'd say ‘okay now you trim the other side. Copy that.' “(There) is the conditioning part. And it was a teaching tool to me that you do this day after day, hour after hour, and don't stop. And it's going to pay off. "(It's) hard work and don't stop, even though you may get discouraged. Keep pushing on because you know what, it pays off in the long run and it gives you so much joy and reward. "And you know what the best part of it is the dogs. You're spending time with our best friends ever. I mean, I don't know where my life would be without the dogs themselves, seriously. “It's artistry, and I think people prefer the quick fix and the easy fix. I think that people should give themselves a challenge, prove what they can accomplish and they might be surprised." John shared his passions for Food and Music and a little Florida State trash talk with the 93' National Championship. He was open in sharing more about his work in mental health and how he has seen this stigma change for the better, sadly it was always viewed as lesser than some of the other health needs in our communities. Let us be courageous and talk about these real challenges as it relates to addiction, mental health, trauma, and available treatment. In leadership, John brings a top-down mentality to create a safe place for his employees to thrive. He has found the Platinum Rule is his secret recipe to success in leadership, "Understand how they want to be treated first, not how you think they would want to be treated."

057 - Did you know that anyone can build a vortex brewer? with guest Rocky Peruch with host Linda Borghi This podcast is made possible by funding from Farm-a-Yard and Farm-a-Yards' Mighty Network. Please support our podcast and become a member seed.Farm-a-Yard.com In this episode my guest Angelo (aka Rocky) Peruch was a student that attended a 7-day conference on Star Island, NH in which I was the sole speaker. He was so inspired by the information that when he returned home he began implementing what he learned and built a 5-gallon vortex brewer. Not only did he build a brewer he started making compost, brewing compost tea and began vermicomposting. Rocky was so kind as to give us the directions to build the brewer, including a materials list and a video which I have included below. So…...go ahead and build your own brewer and let us know how it went. Links: https://youtu.be/MNo2S6XMaBA - How to build a vortex brewer A list of what you will need : So, here you see the components of my version of a vortex machine. In the Engineering profession, this is what we would call a proof-of-concept or Alpha prototype. It works well, so I haven't felt the need to make any improvements. Components include: 1 - 5-gallon bucket 1 - Feedthrough fitting (water heater department) 5 - 90 degree 3⁄4” PVC elbows 1 - Coupling, 3⁄4” PVC to 1⁄2” pipe thread 1 - Coupling, 1⁄2” pipe thread to hose fitting (at pump inlet) 1 - 800 GPH submersible pump (garden hose flow) 1 - Tee fitting, 1⁄2” pipe to PVC (connects to pump outlet) 3 - ball-type shut off valves 1 - Tee fitting, 3⁄4” PVC to 1⁄2” pipe thread 1 - Coupling, 1⁄2” pipe thread to hose end. 1 - Cap for hose end 1 - Small piece of garden hose 2 - 45 degree 3⁄4” PVC elbows 2 - Reducers, 3⁄4” PVC to 1⁄2” pipe thread (for flexible hoses) 2 - flexible hose assys 2 - U-Clamps 4ft of 1⁄2” vinyl tubing 1 – Adapter, 1⁄2” tubing to 1⁄2” pipe thread 1 – Cap, 1⁄2” 1 – small Fountain pump. (I used a Danner 120 GPH pump, but a smaller 70 GPH pump should also work). Small hose clamps 1 - Large plastic bin with lid About 4ft of 3⁄4” PVC tubing Blocks for bucket All of these components can be purchased at your local hardware store and Pet or Garden store. Tools you will need are a PVC tubing cutter (much quicker and easier than a hacksaw), PVC primer and cement, electric drill w/ 1⁄4” drill bit (drain hole), 1” drill bit (feedthrough and inlet lines), round file (for inlet and feedthrough fittings) and an assortment of screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, etc. One thing that I want to point out is that my choice of a submersible pump was somewhat by accident, but it works in this application and is the reason for the large plastic bin. I purchased the pump at Home Depot and two different associates assured me that the pump did not have to be submerged (which is, what I guess I wanted to hear). So, taking their word for it (which is highly unusual for me, but somewhat fortuitous), I forewent reading the instructions and constructed my first prototype. Upon powering it up however, I noticed water leaking from the pump. I soon discovered that the pump diverts some of the intake water internally, through the pump and out through a small discharge hole in the rear of the pump. After researching some options for a non-submersible type pumps, which are much larger and much more expensive, I decided to solve the problem by putting the bottom half of the machine in a large plastic tray so that the pump would be submerged. That solved the problem, but required that I periodically scoop some water from the plastic bin back into the bucket. This is the water that flows through the internal part of the pump and is discharged into the bin (about 700ml/min). I didn't see this as a big issue as I need to attend the process anyway to reverse flow about every 2-3 minutes. Eventually, I decided to put another small pump in the bin to pump water from the bin back into the bucket. You will see this when I fire up the vortex machine. It's your choice if you want to add the second pump or save some $$ and do it by hand. Again, you will need to attend the process, so it's no big deal to do it by hand. http://farmayard.podbean.com/ - Podcast webpage https://www.facebook.com/groups/farmayard/ - Facebook Movement Community http://farm-a-yard.com - Join the Movement, get on our email list https://www.facebook.com/letsfarmyouryard/ - Our Facebook https://www.youtube.com/user/lborghi1?&ab_channel=Farm-a-Yard - Our YouTube channel Music credit: “Insomnia” by John Sheehan.
