In this episode I had a really cool and interesting chat with Joey LeBlanc from Louisiana. Joey went on his first African safari back in 2024 and decided to opt for the unconventional way of hunting by taking his handgun on the trip.   Although not new to the industry, handgun hunting in South Africa is still relatively uncommon amongst first time hunters to Africa. Joey is a really cool guy and he shared everything about his adventure from setting up the correct loads for his gun, too practicing on the range and finally putting it all to the test in Africa.   Below is the link to Joey's article where you can learn a little more about his adventure to the Dark Continent.   Joeys Article ----> https://handgunhuntingafield.blog/2024/09/26/the-stars-align-by-joey-leblanc/   If you are enjoying these episodes, do me a favor and leave a Review & Rating on Apple Podcast and Spotify.   Cheers

Since at least the Age of Exploration, Africa has been referred to as "the Dark Continent." It's, naturally, a dated and controversial term, though to me, it refers to the mysterious interior of the continent, which wasn't seen by European eyes until the 19th Century. But in this podcaster's opinion, it's a moniker that could just as easily be applied to South America, whose Amazonia region in Brazil wasn't even fully mapped until the 20th Century, a feat achieved by none other than former American president Theodore Roosevelt. Tune in to find out how he did and what transpired on that fateful expedition! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historylovescompany/support

What drives a person to seek vengeance, and what are the consequences? This episode of our podcast brings you an in-depth exploration of the Phantom Troupe arc from Hunter x Hunter, featuring special guests Kokugatsu and Mira Jane. We begin by scrutinizing Kurapika's relentless pursuit of the Phantom Troupe, who mercilessly annihilated his clan. Witness how Kurapika's mastery of the NEN system and his unique chains, tailored to subdue the Troupe, play out in his fierce battle with Uvogin and the chaotic events at the auction. The episode also covers Gon and Killua's quest for Greed Island, laying the groundwork for future arcs.Kurapika and Gon are two sides of the same coin, but what sets them apart? We take a magnifying glass to these characters, contrasting Kurapika's strategic brilliance and his eyes of vengeance with Gon's unyielding determination and moral complexity. Through an animated debate, we dissect the varied adaptations of Kurapika's defining fight scenes, weighing the 90s version's thematic layers against the superior choreography of the 2011 adaptation. Hisoka's enigmatic nature and twisted motivations are also given a spotlight, as we draw parallels between him and other iconic characters like Goku and Itachi.Greed Island isn't just a game; it's a narrative bridge to something far greater. We delve into the mechanics and underlying implications of this mysterious game world, theorizing its connections to the Dark Continent and the broader Hunter x Hunter storyline. This episode is a treasure trove of insights, from the card system intricacies to the moral quandaries faced by our beloved characters. We conclude by emphasizing the importance of the author's continuation of the series and share our excitement for the forthcoming Chimera Ant arc discussion. For centuries, Africa was known to Europeans as "the Dark Continent," not so much for the complexion of many of its native inhabitants inasmuch as for the fact that its interior remained largely unexplored. With the Age of Exploration came the full exploration of the interior of Africa, though little, if any, of the Europeans who mapped it likely knew that they weren't the first outsiders to do so. Long before such European countries were even concepts, a group of hearty and intrepid seafarers originally from the Middle East set off from their base of operations in what's now Tunisia to do just that. Then Austin Brown and I broke out the big-bore dangerous game rifles to hunt cape buffalo. We tracked old bachelor bull groups through the days in heat up to 102 degrees Fahrenheit, in ankle-deep sand, and shot three massive old bulls.  This episode is all about the stories, folks!  The episode wraps up with a discussion of African conservation challenges and the future, including a hard, honest look at the cow elephant herds moving into the historic Caprivi Strip region and decimating the habitat.  Experiences like this only happen once in a lifetime, and we hope you enjoy the stories...    If you're interested in following in our tracks and going on safari with a truely exceptional operator in Namibia—family owned, operated, and oriented—check out Kowas Adventure Safaris.      FRIENDS, PLEASE SUPPORT THE PODCAST!  Join the Backcountry Hunting Podcast tribe and get access to all our bonus material on www.patreon.com/backcountry VISIT OUR SPONSORS HERE:  www.browning.com www.barnesbullets.com www.timneytriggers.com www.leupold.com www.onxmaps.com www.silencercentral.com https://www.portersfirearms.com/ www.gunwerks.com www.siembidacustomknives.com https://javelinbipod.com

"Second, when telling such lies as may seem necessary to your international standing, do not tell the lies to the people who know the truth. Do not tell the Eskimos that snow is bright green; nor tell the negroes in Africa that the sun never shines in that Dark Continent. Rather tell the Eskimos that the sun never shines in Africa; and then, turning to the tropical Africans, see if they will believe that snow is green. Similarly, the course indicated for you is to slander the Russians to the English and the English to the Russians; and there are hundreds of good old reliable slanders which can still be used against both of them. There are probably still Russians who believe that every English gentleman puts a rope round his wife's neck and sells her in Smithfield. There are certainly still Englishmen who believe that every Russian gentleman takes a rope to his wife's back and whips her every day. But these stories, picturesque and useful as they are, have a limit to their use like everything else; and the limit consists in the fact that they are not true, and that there necessarily exists a group of persons who know they are not true. It is so with matters of fact about which you asseverate so positively to us, as if they were matters of opinion." For T.J. the hunt is as much about the adventure as it is about the pursuit of game and he has hunted around the globe. He is recognized as a mountain-hunting expert and is always in search of unique adventures that challenge both him and his gear. He has hunted six continents and considers himself blessed to have experienced so many cultures. T.J and his partner Vanessa share a real passion for Africa. They have hunted the Dark Continent eleven times and have not only taken some great animals but also shared their harvest with and brought humanitarian supplies to those less fortunate in some of Africa's most remote regions. He is, however, still proud to call Canada and all its incredible hunting opportunities home.

He says Egypt is also willing to offer more support on that score, whether through bilateral cooperation or AU cooperation mechanisms. Sisi says that Egypt will spare no efforts to address the challenges facing the Dark Continent and achieve the aspirations of all African peoples.

Welcome to the Dior Talks series themed around the sixth edition of Dior Lady Art and hosted by Paris-based journalist Katya Foreman. For this year's event, 12 artists from around the world have participated in a game of metamorphosis by rendering the iconic Lady Dior handbag as a unique piece of art. “The Lady Dior for me symbolizes craft, timelessness and style that transcends the everyday fluidity of fashion. It's also part of a historical canon within the brand, so it's a piece that I was very excited to play with for all those reasons,” says our latest guest on the podcast series, British-Liberian artist Lina Iris Viktor.  The artist through her work, which is characterized by dark canvases enhanced by layers of light, explores the socio-political and spiritual symbolism of the colors black and gold. Viktor's multidisciplinary approach, an interweaving of ancient and contemporary arts, has led her to combine painting, sculpture, performance and photography with a gilding technique using 24-carat gold. In her captivating Lady Dior creations, the flora-themed visual scape of the artist's The Dark Continent series merges with the gold symbology of Constellations. Evoking a starry sky and a lush landscape, handmade antique gold-plated bronze ornaments which include moons, stars and alligators created using delicate goldsmithing techniques, constellate five models crafted in canvas and lizard skin in shades of green, black and blue.  In such a particular context, the Dior Lady Art project for Viktor presented a challenge to test new visual territory unexplored in her creative practice, as well as an opportunity to work with “creative visionaries and artisans at the top of their craft with expert skill in translating a unique vision.” Bridging fashion and art, it also opened up the chance to experience how her art can be translated across mediums, spectrums, and forms. Tune in to the episode to hear all about Viktor's personal experience of the Dior Lady Art journey.

OFI 1011: How To Take Any Skill And Use It In Agriculture

Off-Farm Income

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2021 48:55

SHOW NOTES On the Off-Farm Income Podcast, I like to talk about how people in agriculture can use their problem-solving abilities, mechanical aptitude, and farm equipment to create a small business.  Ultimately, I think that too many farmers turn to the rigid, inflexible work schedule of an employer when they could be using everything they already have at their disposal to create a much more flexible and lucrative small business. But, this is just one side of the coin.  This philosophy only looks at people who are already farming, who have already purchased equipment, and who have already developed certain skills and aptitudes that go with farming that can be used to serve others.  What about the person who wants to transform their life to farming, who has got a degree and several years of work experience in a field that doesn't obviously translate to an agriculturally related business? Today's guest, Wil Crombie, answers that question.  Wil grew up around his family's farm in Minnesota, doing some farm work with his grandfather, like cutting hay.  But after high school, Wil decided to take his life in a different direction and pursued a career in film production.  He got a degree in this and went into this career focusing on the music industry. Some years later, Wil had, shall we will say, a moment.  He realized that he wanted to return to his family's farm in Minnesota and create an awesome organic and regenerative farming operation.  However, all of his experience, education, and network contacts were in the film production and music industry.  Wil had this realization while he was in Hawaii.  Moving from a life in the music industry and working in Hawaii, to a life farming in Minnesota couldn't be a bigger change. What was Wil to do with this hard-earned tool kit of skills and knowledge that he had put together through his film career?  Should he just abandon it, and start over from scratch?  You have probably already guessed, but that is not what he did. Wil returned to the farm.  He and his wife started the operation that he had envisioned, and they, like 90% of all farmers, needed off-farm income.  Will used his skills to obtain, what he calls "W-2 Work" or a job, at a local non-profit.  At the same time, he was scanning for film-making opportunities in the world of agriculture.  Finally one came up....in Africa. Wil took this project and filmed an agricultural project on what was once referred to as "the Dark Continent".  The project was met with success, and his reputation in this space grew.  This propelled him and Man Alone Media to be a much more significant part of his off-farm income portfolio. Since then Wil has been able to leverage his "tool kit" and his growing reputation into more and more work.  But, money is not the only form of payment that he is receiving.  Wil is frequently able to choose work that will not only pay him but will educate him on a concept of agriculture that will help him on his farm in Minnesota. Many of you have a skill set that you don't quite know how to transition to farming right now.  But as you look deeper into that skill set, and you identify what it is you really do, not just what it says on paper, you can do the same as Wil!
