In a world spinning faster every day, where headlines constantly blur the lines between fact and fiction, finding your footing takes courage. Welcome back to the Character-Driven Life and Leadership Podcast with Coach Dane and Kurt! Are you feeling overwhelmed by the constant cycles of global health alarms and media narratives? In this powerful episode, Dane and Kurt cut through the noise surrounding the "new" Hantavirus headlines, reminding us that we do not need to buy into the panic. Together, they explore how fear is often used as a weapon to distract and control, and they share insights on navigating AI biases, digital surveillance, and predictive programming in the media. But above all, this episode is a profound message of hope and victory! Dane and Kurt remind us that we do not have to succumb to the anxieties of this world. Just as Jesus asked the man with the withered hand to simply stretch it out in faith, and just as the Roman centurion recognized Christ as the ultimate Commander-in-Chief of heaven's armies, we too are called to anchor our trust in a higher power. We are on a mission to search for truth in a world full of lies. The more light we shed on these falsehoods, the more we can break free, prosper, and live without fear. Tune in to discover how to keep your family grounded, replace panic with spiritual discernment, and rest in the glorious promise that no matter what comes against us, Christ is the ultimate victor. Keep your lamps lit, stretch out your hand in faith, and let's shape the kind of leadership that endures. Let's dive in—Love, live, lead, and Trike On!

In this thought-provoking continuation of Episode 057, hosts Coach Dane Deutsch and Kurt tackle the chilling realities of modern digital surveillance and artificial intelligence. Drawing on insights from Oxford mathematician Professor John Lennox, they explore the rapid expansion of social credit systems in China, where citizens are tracked, scored, and restricted from basic privileges based on their daily behavior. Is the world moving toward universal social and economic control? Dane and Kurt discuss how these modern technological advancements directly parallel the prophetic warnings in the Book of Revelation about the "Mark of the Beast," in which buying and selling are completely controlled by a centralized power. Along the way, they dive into the dangers of political "groupthink" and the disconnect between Congress and the people, the historical realities of the human condition, and the secular tech world's push for Homo Deus—the desire to upgrade man into a god. Ultimately, Dane and Kurt contrast these worldly ambitions with the ultimate biblical truth: the true "divine upgrade" is already available through Jesus Christ—not man becoming God, but God becoming man. Join us as we explore why character and faith must remain the ultimate foundation in a world of accelerating technology and moral degradation. About the Hosts: The Character-Driven Life and Leadership Podcast is hosted by Dane, an Air Force IT veteran and leadership coach, and Kurt, a global consultant and educator with a deep background in global history and biblical principles. In a world spinning faster every day, where the lines between fact and fiction are constantly blurred by artificial intelligence and digital deception, finding your footing takes immense courage. Welcome to a profoundly eye-opening episode of the Character-Driven Life and Leadership Podcast! Join hosts Coach Dane Deutsch—an Air Force veteran with decades of advanced IT experience—and Kurt, a global consultant with a deep understanding of history and biblical principles, as they tackle the monumental collision between rapidly advancing technology and timeless spiritual truths. This episode features a gripping analysis of insights from Oxford mathematician Professor John Lennox, who warns that Silicon Valley isn't just building software—they are trying to build a god. Dive deep into the terrifying yet fascinating realities of "Transhumanism" and the secular tech elite's quest to conquer death and upgrade humanity into gods, a concept known as "Homo Deus". Dane and Kurt powerfully contrast this technological arrogance with the breathtaking humility of the Christian gospel: rather than man reaching up to become a god, the true miracle is God reaching down to become flesh and bring us back into a relationship with Him. Are we witnessing the futuristic dystopia warned about 2,000 years ago in the Book of Revelation? Discover how modern conveniences, global surveillance systems featuring millions of CCTV cameras, and AI-driven deepfakes are paving the way for unprecedented societal control that bears a chilling resemblance to the "Mark of the Beast". But do not be dismayed—this episode is a powerful call to armor up! You will learn how to safeguard your mind against invasive digital algorithms and electromagnetic frequencies, and why establishing strict "boundaries" around AI is absolutely crucial for protecting your family's future. More than just a warning, this conversation is an inspiring roadmap for daily spiritual victory. Kurt and Dane challenge you to examine the dangerous "micro-compromises" in your daily life—those small moments where you choose what is easy over what is right—and emphasize the life-saving power of surrounding yourself with genuine, iron-sharpening accountability. If you are searching for truth in a world full of lies, this episode will equip you to stand firm, discern good from evil, and lead your life with unwavering, character-driven purpose. Tune in, protect your mind, and get ready to grow! Love, Live, Lead and Trike On!

Episode 056: The Mind Nexus, RF-Controlled Nanobots & Viral-Assembled Nano-Electronics Welcome back to another mind-bending episode of the podcast! In Episode 056, hosts Dane and Kurt take you on a deep dive into the astonishing convergence of biotechnology, nanotechnology, and the future of human integration. If you thought microscopic robots were just science fiction, prepare to have your mind blown. First, we unpack the concept of the "Mind Nexus" and the shocking reality of modern nanobots. We discuss the unbelievable scale of this technology—specifically, how a single syringe tip can hold up to a staggering 1,000 billion nanobots. Measuring just 50 nanometers long, these robots are about 2,000 times thinner than a single strand of human hair and can actually be controlled using RF (Radio Frequency) emissions. Next, Dane and Kurt break down a highly futuristic patent (US7393699B2) for NANO-electronics that bridges the gap between organic biology and electronic manufacturing. We explore how scientists are genetically engineering viruses to act as "biotemplates" that self-assemble complex nanoscale electronic devices. We explain the exact mechanics of how these engineered viruses are immersed in solutions to organically build transistors—assembling the gate, source, channel, and drain using nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes. Finally, we discuss the profound medical and transhumanist applications of this bio-assembled technology. Because these electronic circuits are built using biological templates, such as viruses, they can be embedded in the human body without triggering rejection. Join us as we explore how these self-assembling viral nanodevices could be used to build closed-loop insulin production systems to treat diabetes, or even function as advanced cardiac pacemakers directly inside the host. Key Takeaways in this Episode: The Scale of Nanobots: How 1,000 billion RF-controlled robots can fit into a single syringe. Viral Manufacturing: How genetically modified viruses are being used to "grow" and self-assemble computer components and carbon nanotubes. Medical Marvels: The future of integrating human-compatible bio-electronics, such as pacemakers and insulin regulators, directly into the human body. In a world filled with shifting headlines and false narratives, we are on a continuous mission to search for truth in a world full of lies. This Good Friday and Easter weekend, we pause to celebrate the greatest truth of all: Christ willingly gave His life for us, and the tomb is truly empty. Join Dane and Kurt as they dive into the historical and spiritual significance of Jesus's sacrifice. By examining the Book of John and Jesus's trial before Pilate, we uncover how the same "herd mentality" and false narratives from centuries ago continue to shape the human condition in the 21st century. We confront the profound question that Pilate once asked, and that we seek to answer every single week: "What is the truth?" This episode will challenge you to see Christianity not as a religion of man reaching up to God, but as a powerful relationship built by a King who stepped off His throne to reach down to us. You will be motivated by the ultimate examples of humility and courage, which are core character skills in the Tricycle Effect. We also discuss the joyful desire to share this transformative relationship and the gift of the Holy Spirit with our families, neighbors, and friends. The Invisible Assault on Your Family's Health (And How to Finally Heal) Please note: We dedicate this episode to Dr. Jack Kruse and his pioneering work in waking humanity to the hidden dangers of toxic Blue Light. You wake up, pour your coffee, and sit down at your desk. By 2:00 PM, the exhaustion hits you like a physical wall, your eyes ache, a dull headache sets in, and you instinctively reach for an Advil. You tell yourself you're just getting older, or that you're just stressed. Meanwhile, your child can't seem to sit still in their brightly lit classroom, and the school is suggesting a pill for ADHD. You think this is just modern life. But what if the very thing making you sick, draining your energy, and hijacking your child's focus isn't a medical condition at all? What if the danger is the actual light shining down from your ceiling? In this eye-opening episode, Kurt and Dane expose the truth about the "alien sun"—the modern LED lighting and screens silently suffocating your cells. We are beings of frequency, wonderfully woven together by a Creator, but our modern environments are tearing that design apart. At a quantum level, the isolated blue light from our devices and lightbulbs acts as a destructive agent, physically stretching the respiratory proteins in your mitochondria and causing cellular hypoxia. It destroys the hormones you need for sleep, focus, and critical thinking. We are treating the symptoms with endless pharmaceuticals while ignoring the root cause that surrounds us every day. But you don't have to be a victim to this invisible infrastructure. In this episode, you will discover: Why the "digital collar" of blue light is the real reason you feel perpetually drained, and how to break free from it. The shocking truth about classrooms: Why ADHD might actually be a misdiagnosed reaction to the toxic blue spikes and invisible flashing of LED lights. How to implement a simple "light diet" using natural sunlight, incandescent bulbs, and firelight to trigger immediate cellular repair. The deep, spiritual connection between the light that enters our eyes and the healing of our bodies. You have the power to take back your health, calm your home, and heal your body from the inside out. Stop treating the symptoms and start fighting the cause. The Biometric Breakpoint - Why Your Face Is No Longer a Password But today, I'm looking at a blog post that says we were wrong. We are diving deep into an article titled "The Biometric Breakpoint: Why Your Face Is No Longer a Password." It was published in January 2026 by the team over at Unplugged. And if you care about your digital privacy, this is a wake-up call you need to hear.  Here is the link to that blog post: https://unplugged.com/blogs/news/the-biometric-breakpoint-why-your-face-is-no-longer-a-password?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=campaign&_kx=v3c7DFKqFZOM1wY8ZhyUMYUKrnmzYSV3ulzlWMX_h3M.Rffdep The core argument Unplugged makes is terrifyingly simple: The "identity perimeter"—that invisible wall proving you are who you say you are—has been vaporized. Are you ready to face the reality behind your screen? For years, we believed the old adage that you can change a password but not your face, making biometrics the ultimate security tool. Join us as we explore how the convenience of unlocking your life with a glance has become a weapon against you. We uncover the terrifying rise of "injection attacks," where hackers bypass camera lenses entirely to feed your phone a "puppet show starring you". The Masquerade: Unmasking the Real ID and the Fight for Digital Sovereignty Join hosts Dane and Kurt as they continue their mission of searching for truth in a world of lies. This deep dive segment focuses on the Real ID, which they allege is far more than a simple security update. We explore how the Real ID, which was passed in 2005, is fundamentally a federal ID masquerading as a state driver's license. The hosts claim this Act effectively created a national identity card for the United States for the first time in history. Discover the startling details behind this system: The Hijack: Learn how the federal government allegedly sidestepped political resistance to the national ID concept by "hijacking" state DMVs. Surveillance Mechanism: The Real ID is described as a federal surveillance mechanism part of the coming surveillance state designed to restrict travel and set the stage for a potential "digital prison". Private Control: The ID itself is reportedly issued by a private French company called IDMIA, which is essentially "in the business of surveillance". The hosts tackle these complex issues in "bite-sized pieces" while emphasizing hope in Christ and the need to lead with character first. Finally, get concrete advice on how to refuse the Real ID, switch back to a standard state license, and use a passport instead. Visit refuseerealID.org for more information. Welcome to Character-Driven Life & Leadership, the podcast dedicated to training and coaching leadership growth and development. In this episode, titled "The Hidden Health Hazards of Smart LED Bulbs," we discuss Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and your health to help you understand the technology and guide you to navigate the Risks, Effects, and Protection you need in an ever-increasing wirelessly connected world.  In this episode, we confront an unseen threat and/or challenge impacting our well-being and, consequently, our ability to lead and live fully:  SMART LED Bulbs In our modern, hyper-connected world, we are constantly immersed in invisible electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by devices like Wi-Fi routers, smartphones, smart meters, and even common LED lights. These pervasive, non-ionizing energies, including extremely low frequency (ELF) and radiofrequency (RF) radiation, can significantly influence our mental clarity, energy, and restorative sleep—all critical pillars of effective leadership and a thriving life. Join us as we explore the emerging science behind how EMF exposure can be linked to a range of symptoms and risks that undermine personal and professional performance: Cognitive and Neurological Impacts: From headaches, fatigue, dizziness and brain fog to difficulties with concentration, memory loss, and even altered brain electrical activity. EMFs can interfere with brain metabolism and affect the blood-brain barrier, essential for clear thinking and optimal function. Sleep and Mood Disruption: Discover how RF and blue light exposure, particularly in the evening, can suppress melatonin production, disrupting sleep patterns and contributing to elevated cortisol, anxiety, and irritability. Acute Sensitivities: For individuals with Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS), symptoms like tingling or burning sensations, heart palpitations, muscle pain, and dizziness can manifest rapidly upon exposure. EHS highlights the unique biological sensitivities some individuals have to these fields. Long-Term Health Concerns: We'll delve into research suggesting potential long-term risks, including oxidative stress and DNA damage, impacts on reproductive health (such as reduced sperm count and increased miscarriage rates), and potential links to serious conditions like cancer (e.g., glioma and leukemia). Vulnerable Populations: Understand why children are particularly susceptible to EMF effects due to their developing tissues and smaller body size, underscoring the need for proactive family leadership in managing exposure. While scientific consensus on all causal links is still evolving, a character-driven leader doesn't wait for absolute certainty when well-being is at stake. This episode empowers you with practical, actionable strategies to understand, reduce, and mitigate your EMF exposure. Learn to: Maximize distance from wireless devices and turn them off when not in use. Prioritize wired connections over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth where possible. Utilize EMF shielding products. Make informed choices about lighting, opting for flicker-free incandescent or halogen bulbs instead of smart LEDs that can constantly beacon and contribute to dirty electricity, even when "off". Taking charge of your electromagnetic environment is a powerful act of self-leadership. Tune in to Character-Driven Life & Leadership and discover how making informed choices about EMFs can enhance your focus, restore your energy, and safeguard your health, enabling you to live and lead with greater vitality and purpose. Attention, leaders: In this episode, we pull back the curtain on how today's tech—especially smartphones and rapidly advancing AI—shapes our attention, cognition, and relationships. Think of it as a friendly readiness briefing for the digital battlefield: what's helpful, what's harmful, and what to do about it. We start with the attention economy's not-so-hidden costs. Since the iPhone's 2007 debut, most of us check our phones around 80 times a day—roughly 30,000 micro-moments a year. Each ping isn't just “a quick look.” Interruptions can cost about 25 minutes of focus, plus another 15 to regain momentum—like slamming the brakes and then flooring it… over and over. Even having a phone within eyeshot reduces cognitive horsepower. The antidotes are simple and strong: get the phone out of sight, use Do Not Disturb, and turn off nonessential notifications. Your brain will send a thank-you note. We also unpack the health side. Late-night screens suppress melatonin and scramble sleep. Kids' near-constant screen time correlates with rising nearsightedness and less outdoor play—cue the reminder that bodies were designed to move. We touch on concerns around electromagnetic exposure and why daylight, movement, and device-free rhythms restore the human system you're leading with. Then we head into AI's fast-evolving frontier—from search engines to bots to what some call “synthetic intelligence.” Devices can now read faces and respond, and the line between “reading our minds” and influencing them is the new debate. We revisit the manipulative design patterns highlighted in The Social Dilemma and ask the leadership question: how do we protect character, privacy, and agency when algorithms know our tells better than we do? Boundaries become the hero of the story. Like a playground fence that lets kids roam freely, clear digital guardrails create real freedom at home and at work: no phones at the dinner table, tech-free zones, device bedtimes, and sacred spaces for eye contact and physical presence. These aren't anti-tech rules; they're pro-human habits. Because face-to-face interactions, touch, and unfractured attention are the nutrients of healthy relationships and resilient teams. Finally, we elevate the spiritual and social stakes. Tech that fragments empathy shrinks our capacity to serve. We explore the lure of transhumanism and the risk of losing what makes us distinctly human—then chart a better way: lead with character, protect attention like it's mission-critical, and use technology as a tool, not a tyrant. Your next steps: watch The Social Dilemma (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaaC57tcci0&t=2s), implement family and team boundaries, get outside, and keep learning about AI so you're not led by it. This isn't about fear; it's about formation—shaping lives, families, and organizations where technology serves what matters most. "Love, Live Lead and Trike On!, Coach Dane"

Episode 026 - Master the 3 D's That Shape Champions in Life Through This Chalk Talk by Coach Dane

Master the 3 D's That Shape Champions in Life Through This Chalk Talk by Coach Dane   Believe it or not, some of the most powerful lessons for life and business don't come from corner offices or boardrooms. Sometimes, they come from unexpected places – like a gymnastics gym. Coach Dane Deutsch recently gave his gymnasts a "Chalk Talk" that, while aimed at young athletes gearing up for trick season, holds profound wisdom for anyone looking to achieve a goal, start a business, or simply move beyond "plotting through life." He laid out a simple yet potent framework: the 3 D's: Dream, Desire, and Do. Let's break down how these apply directly to you, the adult, the aspiring entrepreneur, the goal-setter. The Power of the 3 D's for Adults 1. Dream (Visualize) Coach Dane emphasizes that "dream" is the same as visualize. It's not just a vague wish; it's about getting a clear picture in your head of what you want to achieve. For his gymnasts, that meant visualizing next year's routines, the tricks they wanted to nail, or the strength they wanted to build. For you, this means clearly envisioning your business idea, your personal goal, or that next big step in your career. What does it look like when it's successful? How does it feel? You need that sharp mental image, that clear target in the future that you can almost see happening. This is the starting point. 2. Desire (Be Hungry) The second D is Desire, and Coach Dane describes it vividly. It means to "stoke up the desire," "fan a flame of desire," and "be hungry." He clarifies this doesn't mean literally wanting food, but having a strong drive, a deep internal fire, to get something done. This is the passion, the hunger for your dream. Without it, even the clearest vision won't lead to action. It's about cultivating an intense internal motivation, a yearning that pushes you forward. For anyone starting a business or pursuing a challenging goal, this desire is your engine, especially when things get tough. 3. Do (Take Action) The third D is the crucial part: Do. This is the action phase. You can dream all day, but if you don't do, nothing will happen. Coach Dane highlights how these D's are interconnected. You need to visualize (Dream) to fuel your drive (Desire). You need that drive (Desire) to motivate you to take action (Do). And if you just "do" things without a clear dream or strong desire, you're likely just "running around in circles." Your "doing" becomes aimless effort rather than focused steps towards a purpose. Your desire is the "why," and the "do" is the "how" – and the strength of your "why" directly impacts your willingness to figure out the "how" and actually do it. A Real-World Example: Building a Business from Scratch Coach Dane shares how this framework has been his operating principle his entire life. He first dreams or visualizes something, then checks if he has a "hunger" (desire) for it. If not, he tosses it out. If the hunger is there, he takes action and does it. He provides a powerful example that resonates deeply with adults, especially those interested in entrepreneurship: starting his own gym with his wife, Kathy. While living in Turkey years ago, they first visualized their big dream of having this gym. When they returned to the United States, they had "no money, no house, [and] nothing." This situation meant they "had to be hungry" (Desire) to make their dream a reality. Despite the potential for failure – recognizing it was an opportunity to succeed, they "actually took action" and "did it." Fast forward over 35 years, and the gym is a success. But Coach Dane's definition of success goes beyond just making a living. For him, the true success lies in the "significance that we could add value" to the thousands of children and families who have come through the gym. This story powerfully illustrates how Dream, Desire, and Do are the fundamental building blocks for achieving significant goals and creating something lasting, even starting from nothing. Are You Just Plotting Through Life? Coach Dane starkly contrasts this intentional approach with how he sees "most people, even adults, in this world," who are often "just plotting through life." These adults, he notes, often "don't have any real dream" and are simply focused on getting through the day or the week. It's a challenging image, but one that prompts self-reflection. Are you actively shaping your future with a clear vision, a burning desire, and deliberate action, or are you just going through the motions? The Challenge for You Coach Dane's simple framework, born in a gym, is a profound reminder for all of us. To move beyond just plotting, you need: •A clear Dream: Visualize what you truly want to build or achieve, personally or professionally. Make it a sharp mental image. •Burning Desire: Cultivate that hunger, that deep drive for your dream. Find what gives it meaning and makes you passionate about it. •Consistent Doing: Identify the concrete steps, even small ones, and start taking action. Let your desire fuel your efforts. Think about any dreams you might have dismissed. How might things change if you consciously applied these three elements? Could it change what you believe is possible for you? What's just one small, concrete step you could take today towards one of those dreams you've been holding on to? Dream it, desire it, and then, most importantly, Do it.  Trike On!   Want to get some coaching from Coach Dane? 3 ESSENTIAL KEYS TO BUILD CHARACTER AS YOUR COMPETITIVE LEADERSHIP ADVANTAGE https://coach.lmdc.us/3Keys Download this asset and learn how to "TRANSFORM YOUR LEADERSHIP WITH CHARACTER AS THE FOUNDATION FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL & CEO-LEVEL SUCCESS" You can also visit his blog at:  https://theararatconnection.blogspot.com/2025/05/unleash-your-inner-entrepreneur-3-keys.html Or You can also watch Coach Dane delivering his Chalk Talk: https://share.descript.com/view/fa8iAklJVha

In this “Chalk Talk” Coach Dane shares his simple but powerful 3 D formula—Dream, Desire, Do—for anyone who feels stuck or uncertain about their next level of growth. Pain Point How the 3 D's Help Athletes & Adults Lack of clear direction “I don't know what I really want.” Dream = Visualize. Coach shows how to picture specific routines, skills, careers, or life goals so effort has a target. Low motivation / going through the motions Desire = Get hungry. He explains fanning the flame of want—turning vague interest into the energy that pulls you to practice, study, or lead. Inconsistent follow-through Do = Act boldly. The talk frames action as the bridge between intention and progress, reminding listeners that courage beats fear of failure every time.   Coach illustrates the formula with his own story: returning from Turkey 35 years ago with no money but a vivid dream for a gymnastics gym, the hunger to make it real, and the willingness to act—even at the risk of failure. The result: decades of impact on thousands of young athletes. Take-away: whether you're chasing a new trick, a promotion, or a life purpose, combine a clear vision, relentless desire, and decisive action to convert possibility into significance.  Trike On! Here is the transcript: Chalk Talk on 3 D's in Gym - Dream:Desire:Do === [00:00:00] Okay, so for the Chalk Talk this week, I wanted to emphasize a couple of things, because now we're in trick season, right? Not in routine season. So the pressure's off right now. Now is the time when you need to visualize that means to dream. It's the same as visualize, right? You're gonna dream what you're gonna do. Mm-hmm. What is it you wanna do next year? What kind of routines do you want to do next year? What kind of tricks do you want to do next year? How strong do you want to be? All of those things. But it's also the time to really stoke up the desire. That means you gotta, you got a fan, a flame of desire, and be hungry. Lots of times I've asked you guys in the past, right, are you hungry? Right? You know, that doesn't mean eating food. That means that you have a desire to get something done, right? And the third part of this, and these are three D's, go D, right? You have the do. That's the action part. So you can have dream, but if you don't   [00:01:00] visualize, you can't get the other two going. If you don't have desire and you're not hungry, you could have visual all you want, but you're not gonna actually take action. And the third one is if you have a do and you don't have a dream or a desire, you probably running around in circles, right? So this is how Dane has operated all his life. If I first dream or visualize something, then I have a hunger for it. If I don't have a hunger for it, I toss it out. And then I go and I actually do it. Most people, even adults in this world, are just plotting through life. They don't have any real dream. They're just making it every day just so I can get to the end of the day or I can get to Friday, so I have Saturday and Sunday to fish or something. They don't care what's happening in between. For Kathy and I, our big dream we visualized in Turkey before we even came home, and that was to have this gym, and that was 35 years ago. So June 1st, we'll start our 36th year in this gym in this same place.   [00:02:00] That's a lot of time, isn't it? We've had thousands of you little critters go through this gym, right? But the bottom line is we dreamt at first, then we came home. We were hungry to do it because we had no money, no house, we had nothing. We had spent whatever we spent to get to move back to the United States from Turkey. And so we had to be hungry and then, but we actually took action. We did it. Even if we, if it was a, maybe an opportunity to fail, it was still an opportunity to also succeed. And after 35 years Yep. It was success more than that. It wasn't just successful 'cause we were able to earn a living here, it was more because of the significance that we could add value to you. Right. And to the thousands of other families and kids that came through this gym. So I want you to remember that you dream, desire, do. In other words, visualize, be hungry, and then go take action. Okay. Alright, let's have a good workout tonight. Thanks a lot. Try on. Alright.

    3 Myths of Character Coaching

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2024 11:10

Blog Post: Busting 3 Myths About Coaching Character as a Skill When it comes to leadership, *character* is often thought of as something you either have or you don't. But what if I told you that character can be coached just like any other skill? This may sound surprising, but it's true! In my book *Coach-Ability and The Tricycle Effect*, I focus on how developing strong character skills is the foundation of effective leadership. However, there are many myths that prevent people from understanding that character is not just inherent—it can be learned, developed, and refined. In this blog post, we'll tackle three of the most common myths about coaching character as a skill. Myth #1: "Character is something you're born with, not something you can develop." One of the biggest myths about character is that it's something fixed at birth—either you have it, or you don't. While it's true that certain character traits might come more naturally to some than others, *character* itself is shaped by our experiences, choices, and the effort we put into growth. Just like learning a new language or mastering a musical instrument, character can be developed through intentional practice and feedback. In fact, the core message of *The Tricycle Effect* framework is that character is the front wheel that guides you and drives your success in leadership. Just like you can train to improve your communication or technical skills, you can work on becoming more trustworthy, responsible, and empathetic. Myth #2: "Character development is too vague and hard to measure." Some people believe that character is a "fuzzy" concept that's too subjective to be measured or coached. But just because character isn't measured by numbers like sales or performance stats doesn't mean it's not measurable. In *Coach-Ability and The Tricycle Effect*, I break character down into practical skills like integrity, empathy, courage, and accountability—these are clear, definable traits that can be improved through feedback, coaching, and practice. By focusing on specific character skills and setting tangible goals, you can track progress and see real growth. For example, setting a goal to actively listen to your team's concerns for a set number of times each week is a measurable way to practice empathy. Just like other skills, the more you practice, the better you become! Myth #3: "Character development is just about personal growth, not professional success." Some people think that character only affects your personal life, but it is actually one of the biggest drivers of professional success as well. Building character skills like trustworthiness, fairness, and responsibility directly impacts your ability to lead others effectively. In fact, character is often the “X-factor” that separates good leaders from great leaders. When leaders demonstrate character by making ethical decisions, taking accountability, and showing empathy, they earn trust and loyalty from their team, which leads to a positive work culture and better results. In short, character development is not just a personal endeavor—it's a professional investment that pays off by building a stronger, more successful team. Take Action: Build Your Character Skills Now that we've busted these myths, I challenge you to take action! Remember, character isn't something you're stuck with—it's something you can develop and grow, just like any other skill. Start by identifying one character skill you want to improve, and then create a plan to practice it daily. If you're ready to take your leadership to the next level, I invite you to explore *Coach-Ability and The Tricycle Effect*, where I dive deeper into the steps you can take to build character as the foundation of your leadership. Episode 008- Are you a Leader or Manager?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2020 1:50

Are you a Leader or a Manager? Knowing the difference can make you a more significant and successful person! So today, I saw an interesting article that came in my email box. And of course, all of us are flooded with emails. This one stood out because it talked about the difference between a manager and a leader. And I'm telling you, it's easy to say, Oh yeah, I'm a manager at this company. I have 20 people that I manage, but in reality, we don't manage any person at all. We can manage processes and procedures and systems, but we don't manage people, at least not to the extent that they will let us manage them. It's kind of like leading a horse to water, but you can't force them to drink in this particular instance. When we talk about managing, I am really talking about managing systems, processes, and procedures. And when I'm talking about leading, I use the definition of leadership that John Maxwell uses, which is a great definition, very simple and succinct, easy to remember. Leadership is influence nothing more, nothing less. You can influence people. Therefore you lead people, you influence people. You manage things which are systems, processes, or procedures, and you lead people. Two very distinct differences and yet critical for a great leader, a strong leader, an effective leader, to be able to know the difference between the two and know when they're managing and when they're leading people. That influence for leadership makes all the difference.
