Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen. In this episode titled "Mastery in Motion — Journey to Coaching Excellence and Leadership Impact," Severin speaks with Dr. Wai K Leong, an accomplished ICF Master Certified Coach (MCC), ICF Global Board Director, and Founder of JMC Coach Mastery Academy. Recorded on December 20, 2024, this conversation explores Wai K's journey from corporate leadership to coaching mastery, and his influential role in building coaching cultures across Asia and beyond. Recognized as the first Malaysian to receive the MCC credential and a member of the ICF Circle of Distinction (2019), Wai K shares powerful lessons for leaders and executive coaches seeking excellence. Wai K Leong's career began in education and corporate leadership, including significant roles at Intel and the Hong Leong Group, before he transitioned fully into coaching. His early leadership challenges sparked a deep interest in coaching methodologies, greatly influenced by the teachings of Thomas Leonard. In 1999, Wai K founded the JMC Coach Mastery Academy, establishing one of ASEAN's first ICF-accredited institutions with all four accredited coaching programs. His authored works — including Empowering Asian Mindsets Through Coaching — blend coaching mastery with cultural intelligence, empowering leaders to drive transformational change. Key Insights 1. Mastery Beyond Tools: Transforming the Self Wai K emphasizes that true coaching excellence requires a personal transformation — not just mastering techniques, but deep inner work, developing self-awareness, and practicing courageous presence. 2. The Power of Staying Curious He illustrates the importance of "remaining in a state of not knowing," allowing deeper client truths to emerge without rushing to conclusions, a hallmark of masterful coaching. 3. Narratives Shape Leadership Wai K teaches that problems are symptoms of deeper assumptions and beliefs, and coaches must guide clients to reframe unhelpful narratives for true progress. 4. Cultural Bridges in Coaching Addressing the differences between Eastern and Western mindsets, Wai K shares strategies for adapting coaching approaches across cultures, fostering reflection even where expressiveness may not be culturally natural. 5. Lifelong Development and Reflection From mastering presence to reinforcing healthy boundaries, Wai K champions continuous personal development as the foundation of lasting coaching impact. Tara VanDerveer has more wins than any other coach in NCAA basketball history. But as she says, motivating and leading teams isn't about barking orders. Communication, she says, “It starts, number one, with listening.”For VanDerveer, leadership isn't about a power dynamic, but a collaboration between her and her team. “I can't do it by myself and they can't do it by themselves. But as a team, we can,” she says. From seeking opinions from her assistant coaches to connecting with players about life outside the gym, VanDerveer recognizes that championships are won through communication. “The relationships that you have with your players, the communication that you have with them, will determine your success as a coach,” she says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, VanDerveer and host Matt Abrahams explore more communication insights from on and off the court — being clear and concise, giving praise and positive feedback, and letting go of perfectionism.Episode Reference Links:Stanford Cardinal Profile: Website Ep.102 Create Presence: How to Communicate in a Way Others Can Feel Website / YouTube Ep.35 Leading From The Hot Seat: How To Communicate Under Pressure Website / YouTube Connect:Email Questions & Feedback >>> thinkfast@stanford.eduEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn Page, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInStanford GSB >>> LinkedIn & TwitterChapters:(00:00:00) IntroductionHost Matt Abrahams introduces guest Tara VanDerveer, former Stanford University basketball coach.(00:00:59) Building Trust and OpennessFostering an environment where players feel comfortable being challenged and pushing themselves.(00:01:52) Communicating Under PressureStrategies for speaking clearly and concisely during crucial moments in games.(00:05:24) Motivation and FocusMotivating a team during challenging times and keeping them focused after successes.(00:07:26) The Value of RoutineThe value and impact of routines in practice and performance.(00:09:01) Positive Feedback and PraiseBalancing constructive criticism with positive feedback to foster player growth.(00:10:46) Taking RisksInsights on taking risks in career and coaching strategies.(00:12:56) Dual Role of CoachingThe dual role of a coach in ensuring both athletic and personal growth for players.(00:14:11) Handling Turnover and OnboardingManaging player turnover and integrating new team members.(00:16:39) Managing EmotionsTechniques for staying calm and focused during high-emotion situations.(00:17:55) Handling Mistakes and Staying PositiveMethods for helping players move past mistakes and stay focused.(00:19:35) Equity in SportsAddressing and advocating for equity between women's and men's sports.(00:21:21) Final Three QuestionsTara shares how to accept praise, two communicators she admires, and her recipe for successful communication.(00:26:30) ConclusionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Our new book, The Score That Matters, is a USA Today Best-Seller! Buy it here: https://amzn.to/44HucGf Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Craig Robinson is the host of Ways to Win. He's the executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). From 2017-2020, he served as the VP of Player Development for the New York Knicks. Previously, he was a Division I head men's basketball coach at Oregon State and Brown. He also is the brother of former First Lady Michelle Obama. Notes: What Craig learned from Coach Pete Carill about recruiting: There is a sales element to it. And one of the most important skills to develop is to become a great LISTENER. Ask questions, listen, and ask more questions. Curiosity is the ultimate form of respect. Coach Carill won over Craig's dad because he was curious. That's a good lesson for all of us. President Obama (Craig's brother-in-law) said Craig's discipline and diligence enhanced his presidential campaign. “Craig doesn't profess to know the specifics of politics the way he knows the X's and O's of basketball, but I think what he does understand is the need to wake up every morning doing your best and having a positive attitude. And him communicating that to me was always very helpful.” When (future President) Barack Obama was dating Craig's sister (Michelle), he told their family at Thanksgiving dinner that he had aspirations and a plan to be the President of the United States. It seemed crazy at the time, but he made it happen. What are the "must-have" qualities to be a coach on Craig's staff? Connect with people Lifelong learning Curiosity Fill in gaps (be strong where Craig is not) Must be a good listener What Craig looked for in a player when recruiting: Baseline talent (table stakes) 2-3 "bucket-getters" High IQ Flexible After graduating from Princeton, where he played for Pete Carril and was twice named the Ivy League player of the year, Criag wanted to coach. Instead, he went to graduate school and succeeded in the financial world, including spending seven years as a vice president at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. Then, he pivoted away and took an assistant job on Bill Carmody's staff at Northwestern. That job eventually led Robinson to Brown, where in two seasons he overhauled the program with his work ethic, tough love, and relentless demands on his players. He put a dictionary in the locker room for players to look up the words he used, a tradition that has continued at Oregon State. What made him not immediately go into coaching? Pete Craill telling him to get a real job. It's amazing the influence the people we look up to can have on us. Craig's fondest memory? January 20, 2009. He went to President Obama's inauguration in Washington D.C. He then flew to a game on the west coast (as the head coach of Oregon State). And received a standing ovation from the visiting team's crowd as he walked out!

BONUS: The Agile-Product Continuum: Phillip Starke's Blueprint for Coaching Excellence This episode was triggered by Phillip Starke's blog post titled “Why agile coaches should strive to be product coaches”. You can read that blog post here, and listen in this episode to Phillip's perspective and why he reached those conclusions. Agile to Product Coaching Transformation "Agile Coaches are already product coaches in essence, they just need to realize and embrace it fully." Phillip reflects on why agile coaches should also consider themselves product coaches. He argues for a unified approach to coaching that encompasses both agile and product development principles. A Pivot Towards Product-Centric Coaching "I had a turning point when I realized, despite our success, how much more impactful we could have been with a stronger focus on user interaction and discovery." Phillip shares his experience transitioning from an agile-focused to a product-centric coaching approach, highlighting a project where greater emphasis on user discovery would have led to even more significant outcomes. Enhancing Product Development Through User Engagement "Talking to users directly is eye-opening. Watching real users interact with your product not only breaks down assumptions but also greatly motivates the team." Phillip delves into the core of his coaching philosophy, which centers on the importance of direct user engagement for insightful product development, emphasizing how real user interactions can dramatically inform and motivate the development process. The Hurdles to Product Coaching Evolution "The leap to product coaching is often hindered by a lack of experience and a narrow focus on feature delivery within organizations." In this segment, Phillip discusses the barriers that prevent agile coaches from evolving into product coaches, including a lack of holistic product development experience and organizational tendencies to prioritize feature delivery over comprehensive product strategies. Missing Links: Skills and Practices for Agile Coaches "Getting close to your users is key. Regular interactions and adopting a mindset of continuous discovery can significantly shift how we approach product development." Phillip outlines the skills and practices that agile coaches often lack, emphasizing the importance of user interaction and a continuous discovery mindset for effective product coaching. In this segment, we refer to the book Continuous Discovery by Teresa Torres. Marty Cagan's Principles for Success: A Closer Look "Successful teams address risks early, build collaboratively, and focus on solving problems, not just adding features." Phillip highlights the principles for successful teams as outlined by Marty Cagan, stressing the alignment between these principles and the goals of both agile and product coaching. Deeper Insights and Common Oversights "A common pitfall is designing first without involving engineering early on. To truly focus on problems, we need to run experiments and learn from them as early as possible." In this segment, we discuss some common oversights in agile coaching, particularly the separation of design and engineering, and Phillip advocates for early experimentation to address problems efficiently. Actionable Steps Towards Becoming a Product Coach "Start small but think big. Engage with users regularly, increase deployment frequency, and aim for outcomes over outputs to begin transforming into a true product coach." Phillip offers practical, actionable steps for agile coaches to start their transition towards becoming product coaches, focusing on user engagement and outcome-oriented development. Future of Agile Coaching: Evolution and Challenges "Agile coaches must broaden their focus from delivery to a holistic product development approach, embracing continuous learning and adaptation." What is the future of Agile coaching? Phillip discusses the future evolution of agile coaching, emphasizing the need for coaches to adopt a broader perspective that includes all aspects of product development. Imagining the Ultimate Product Development Process "Imagine a world where product development is driven by continuous experimentation, where collaboration is seamless, and decisions are quickly validated through user feedback." Phillip envisions an ideal product development process characterized by continuous experimentation, seamless collaboration, and rapid validation, encouraging listeners to adopt these practices to enhance their development efforts. In this segment, we refer to the BONUS episodes on experimentation. About Phillip Starke Phillip is a Scrum Master, Agile Coach, and Product Owner who blends technology and team dynamics to deliver valuable products. He writes about product development on his newsletter, The Backlog. With a background in mechanical engineering and experience in the automotive, software, and data analytics industries, he now freelances to enhance team success in product development. Gratitude is the law of increase, and complaint is the law of decrease. Keep on the side of thanks giving. Complaint is believing in thoughts that have no foundation in Absolute Truth. They originate out of the intellect. Such thoughts are eliminated by denying their reality and power, and affirming the Truth of Being; then their outer expressions and manifestations disappear also. Thank God for the knowledge of this Truth. Thank God for all the good you have received, and all the good your future holds. When you change your mind, life has no choice but to re-cluster itself according to the new level of vibration at which you are operating. In this episode, we explore Rahul's experience with Agile Coaching and how he developed his coaching approach systematically and beyond any frameworks. His latest book is: Coaching Agile: A guide for Agile Coaches and Scrum Masters to build and scale their coach approach, and now available on Amazon. The Agile Coach's Toolbox: Beyond Frameworks Rahul's journey from startup co-founder to Agile Coach is a story of evolution and adaptability. His experience in the corporate world, starting as a product manager, led him to realize the power of Agile methodologies. Rahul emphasizes the importance of a broad perspective, advocating for a framework-agnostic approach in Agile coaching. He shares invaluable lessons about what works and what doesn't, offering a treasure trove of practices that transcend specific frameworks. This holistic approach is crucial for Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches who wish to apply the most effective strategies in diverse environments. The Agile Coach vs. Scrum Master: Clarifying Roles and Expectations Rahul draws a distinct line between the roles of an Agile Coach and a Scrum Master. While a Scrum Master focuses on framework specifics, an Agile Coach takes a more versatile approach, borrowing practices from various frameworks. This differentiation is pivotal for professionals in the field, especially when navigating job roles and expectations. Rahul's book provides a roadmap for understanding these roles better, even as early as during the interview process. His insights on clarifying expectations and preparing for roles are invaluable for anyone aspiring to excel in the Agile domain. Understanding Products and Markets: The Agile Coach's Edge In a striking perspective shift, Rahul highlights the necessity for Agile Coaches to deeply understand the products or services they're working with. This product-centric approach adds substance and context to Agile coaching, enabling coaches to have meaningful conversations about impact and efficiency. Rahul's background in product management becomes a vital asset here, showcasing how product knowledge can dramatically enhance the effectiveness of Agile methodologies. His emphasis on product discovery practices and on-site observations offers a concrete strategy for Agile Coaches to integrate product understanding into their coaching framework. Rahul's interview is a goldmine of insights for Agile Coaches and Scrum Masters. By focusing on these three key areas – an expansive toolbox, role clarity, and product understanding – Rahul provides a roadmap for professionals to elevate their Agile practices. Today's episode is focuses on the topic of Serial Winning Coaches And Dr David Turner and I are joined for the discussion by Professor Cliff Mallett and Professor Sergio Lara-Bercial who have just written a book called Learning from Serial Winning Coaches based on their research interviewing 17 of these coaches across 10 sports and 10 different countries. Cliff Mallett is an Olympic and World Championship medal winning coach. He is a distinguished Professor of Sport Psychology and Coaching at the University of Queensland, Australia. And has developed a world-renowned online program in sports coaching and consults nationally and internationally for many elite sporting organisations. While Sergio is also an international basketball coach who led teams into 4 European Championships. He is a world-renown Professor of Sport Coaching at Leeds Beckett University, England and VP for the International Council for Coaching Excellence. He also conducts applied research in coach development and youth sport and consults globally for organisations such as FIFA, UEFA, FIBA, NIKE and the IOC. There are so many great ideas in the interview but a few that stuck with me afterwards were: The idea of connection before correction when it comes to coaching, as you cant teach anyone until you have connected with them and they know you care. The importance of a shared purpose, holding each other accountable and respecting the individual when it comes to building connection within the team. And How the great coaches have a philosophy that contains clear values and principles that they use a framework to guide their work, particularly when they face dilemmas. Welcome to another exciting episode of the Concrete Genius Podcast! I'm your host, Sauce McKenzie, and today we've got a lot to talk about. So, grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and let's dive right into it.In this episode, we're starting off with a heartfelt tribute to one of Indiana's all-time greats, Coach Bobby Knight. Known for his fiery personality and unparalleled coaching skills, Bobby Knight was a true icon in the world of basketball. I share my personal thoughts and memories of Coach Knight, discussing how he put Indiana on the map and gave us all a sense of pride and identity. But our conversation doesn't stop there. We delve into the complexities of being from Indiana, a place often overlooked and underestimated. Growing up in Gary, I always felt like I was on my own little island, not quite Chicago but definitely not part of the rest of the state. Bobby Knight, in his own unique way, made it cool to wear Indiana gear and put the state in the national spotlight. His personality, though sometimes brash, was undeniably dominant, much like my own approach to life.As a young child, I was drawn to great orators and storytellers like Coach Knight. His ability to captivate a room, regardless of whether you loved or hated him, was something I admired. Even now, I see parallels between his charisma and my own, and it reminds me that being confident in who you are is essential. We also discuss the impact Coach Knight had on the basketball world, particularly on his defensive strategies and attention to detail. I've had the privilege of learning from individuals who were part of his coaching tree, and the knowledge I've gained has helped shape my own coaching philosophy. But our conversation isn't limited to basketball. We explore the idea of personal growth and how emotions can sometimes get the best of us. We all have our flaws and imperfections, and Coach Knight was no exception. However, it's important to remember the positive contributions people make in their lives and the lives of others.I also touch on the challenges of coaching, particularly when it comes to developing young talent. Regardless of a player's background or level of skill, I believe in their potential to excel with the right guidance. It's not just about teaching basketball; it's about instilling confidence and helping them become the best version of themselves. In the latter part of the podcast, we shift gears to discuss some current sports news, including Dwight Howard's situation, Jimmy Garoppolo's benching, and the Raiders' move to Las Vegas. As a lifelong Raiders fan, I have some strong feelings about the team's future, and I'm eager to see how they perform in their new home.Lastly, I touch on my own coaching endeavors, including my upcoming season coaching girls' basketball. I have a passion for developing talent, and I'm excited to take on this new challenge. I believe in the power of skill development and the impact it can have on young athletes. So, whether you're a basketball enthusiast, a fan of Coach Bobby Knight, or just someone looking for some engaging conversation, this episode has something for everyone. On Friday, September 9th, I was joined on campus at the University of Florida by NCAA President Mark Emmert. Special thanks to the UF Institute for Coaching Excellence for hosting this, which was an interview for both of the NIL courses I teach at UF in the Sports Management and PR departments. Students and athletes alike were invited, and I appeared in my capacity as a professor. Although this was not a media interview, the NCAA has granted me permission to share it.In our nearly 90 minutes together, we discussed:How Year 1 of NIL played outBiggest challenges ahead for NILWhether Congress will pass a bill to regulate NILThe debate over student athletes becoming employeesCompensating student athletes as ambassadors of universitiesThe challenges of student athletes unionizingWhere NIL goes from hereThere were so many great nuggets in this conversation, but especially the concept of student athletes as brand ambassadors, which comes up several times throughout the interview. You can read a summary of the parts of this discussion that interested me the most on Business of College Sports. You can also follow me on Twitter and Instagram to discuss further, ask additional questions or suggest future episodes. You can find more of my analysis on the business of college sports at BusinessofCollegeSports.com and Forbes.
Today, I'm so pleased to be introducing you to Dr. Maria Nemeth. Dr. Maria is a leading expert in leadership excellence, in professional, personal development, and financial empowerment. Her work has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Inc Magazine. She's the Founder & Director of the Academy for Coaching Excellence and she's the Author of the highly-acclaimed book, The Energy of Money: A Spiritual Guide to Financial and Personal Fulfillment. I walked away from this conversation inspired, knowing that, you know, we're each on our own path but there are always people we can be learning from and Dr. Maria is one of those people. It's such a fun conversation. I can't wait to hear what you takeaways from it. Enjoy. Dr. Maria shares with us her beautiful insights: I thought about it and thought about it and read some other spiritual books. And I was able to distill it down into these four words. The last three are - 'I am willing'. 'I am willing', you see. You can be willing to do something you don't know how to do. You can be willing to do something that you're afraid to do. You can be willing to do something that bores you to do. But 'I am willing' takes you up above the worries, doubts, fears, thoughts, feelings, attitudes of states of mind and points of view. It takes us all above that. And the first word to put in before those three is 'nevertheless'. 'Nevertheless, I am willing' are the four most powerful words, you can utter. Nevertheless, means don't take anything away, nevertheless. And if you were to write down these four words, don't type them on a computer and then print them out. No, no, no. In your handwriting - 'Nevertheless, I am willing'. And put it, where your brain can see it every day for at least the next 30 days every day. Everyday. And I could go, I could tell you why, if we had three hours. Why want to keep in front of your brain but suffice it to say your brain will start recognizing this and you'll find that you're taking it in. So that when you're faced with a money problem. And you say, I'm just too guilty to face it. You say - 'Nevertheless I'm willing'. Because I'm interested, more interested in my dreams than my drama. So that's just the bottom line of what I would say. For all of us who have these money worries. So these three factors - taking energy, change, and unpredictability, those are the three attributes of a good game. I mean, think of a tennis, football, poker. Energy. Change. Unpredictability. And the most important thing for us to do is know that this is going to happen. See, one of the things that happens with entrepreneurs is they start opening a business and they hit an obstacle, and the first thing they'll say is 'this wasn't meant to be'. No, that's not true. You're going to hit obstacles. I mean really haven't you hit obstacles in your own business? Of course, of course. But the question is this, am I willing to learn from these obstacles you know? Nelson Mandela, who all of us think is the best right? He had the saying. He said - 'I never lose. I only win or learn...'
