On episode 219 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and AwardsWatch contributor Dan Bayer to give their reactions to the 2024 BAFTA Awards, and give out their predictions for the upcoming 2024 PGA, SAG, and Independent Spirit Awards, As discussed on last week's show, the 2024 BAFTA awards were this past Sunday, with Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer taking home seven awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy. With the film's other wins in Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Editing and Score, it has solidified itself not only as the frontrunner for Best Picture at the Oscars, but it is the forgone conclusion that it will be our winner this year. But with three weeks to go, can any other film set forward as a challenger and take Best Picture right at the last second? Poor Things looked to be the latest challenger to Oppenheimer as made its case by winning five BAFTA's including Best Actress for Emma Stone. But it lost Best British Film in a upset to Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest, thus making it clear which film the BAFTA voting membership was going to reward its top prize to. Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and American Fiction also took home prizes, while films like Barbie. Saltburn, All of Us Strangers, Maestro, and Killers of the Flower Moon went home empty handed. The gang discuss the impact of these results and how much they will factor them in going into the final stage of season. After discussing the BAFTAs, Ryan, Erik, and Dan gave their full predictions for the PGA, SAG, and Independent Spirit Awards, which included plenty of talk about Oppenheimer another big step towards it's Best Picture win, discuss how the four acting races will conclude, how SAG will vote in their television categories, and what they think the unpredictable Film Independent voters will vote on for its winners. All in all, it was a fun predictions portion segment filled with tons of possibilities for various winners to walk away with the top prizes at each show. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h46m. On episode 216 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and AwardsWatch contributor Josh Parham to give their reactions to the 96th Academy Award nominations. Bright and early on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 96th Oscar nominations, celebrating the films released within the year 2023. If you have been listening to the show, and following the race this season, it is no shock at all that Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer lead all films on nomination morning with 13 nominations, followed by Poor Things with 11 nominations, Killers of the Flower Moon with ten, and Barbie with eight. Speaking of Barbie, the biggest snubs and surprise of the nominations came when director Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie missed in the Best Director and Best Actress category, only for America Ferrera to sneak into the Best Supporting Actress line-up. There were other surprises that included five-nomination tallies for Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest, The Holdovers (but missing Best Director), and a solid showing for American Fiction. Ryan, Erik, and Josh break down every aspect of the above the line nominees, which predictions they got right as well as the ones they missed, and as they get into the below the line categories, question some of the stranger choices the members of the Academy made. An overall good conversation surrounding a (for the most part) good group of nominees. This week on End Credits, we tackle the back half of “Barbenheimer”. Although it came out last summer, Oppenheimer is still making news as we count down to the Academy Awards nominations, because this movie is probably going to get a lot of them. We're going to revisit the film, and if you still have a jones for Oppenheimer adjacent material, we will have some recommendations for you. From Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Tim Phillips discussed: The Day After Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is a film that covers one of the most famous events in history, and it centres on a man who has both his good and bad qualities. These are the perfect ingredients for a movie, and it's been done in different ways with all sorts of famous historic figures and events, and it's also been done with the invention of the atomic bomb. We'll talk about what to watch after Oppenheimer. REVIEW: Oppenheimer (2023). He was man plagued by terrible visions, he might have been the first rock star scientist, and without him it's unlikely that the United States would have created the world's first atomic bomb. J. Robert Oppenheimer was a complicated man, and so is the movie that now bares his name. Oppenheimer calls on all of Christopher Nolan's skills as a filmmaker as he tells one man's story spread over multiple timelines and featuring a cast of thousands, but does he overcome his mechanical prowess to find Oppy's humanity? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Nick and Angela welcome one of the world's favourite actors to Christmas dinner at Casa Grimshaw. Florence Pugh comes from a family of performers and cooks, so it's no surprise that she has mastered both. Her first big role came in 2016, when she played Katherine in Lady Macbeth and by 2020 she was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress as Amy March in Little Women. In 2023 Florence starred in and exec produced A Good Person with Morgan Freeman and starred in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. In 2024 we will see her in the highly anticipated Dune 2. Florence loves food and has her own YouTube channel, Cooking with Flo, where her fans can watch her make her favourite meals. Angela has created a wonderful Christmas menu for Waitrose and you can find all the details and her tips and tricks in Waitrose Food magazine online or in store. Angela prepares a pear, Gorgonzola and red chicory salad to start, followed by roast turkey with rosemary, thyme and lemon butter with an apricot, sausage, sage and almond stuffing. On the side are all the trimmings: roast potatoes with confit garlic, spiced cranberry sauce, turkey gravy, Brussels sprouts with hazelnut pangrattato and orange and honey-glazed carrots. And they finish with Florence's favourite dessert, tiramisu. Nick and Florence make cocktails to start and our trio enjoy a Fenaroli Pecorino Superiore and a Villa Antinori Rosso over dinner. The experts at Waitrose also recommend a Waitrose Champagne blanc de noir, which goes perfectly with this Christmas spread. Florence Pugh is the consummate Christmas dinner party guest, arriving with a gift and her slippers which she dons before dinner. Talk at the table turns to Christmas traditions in the Pugh household, why Florence finds bed scenes so challenging - and listen out for a hilarious hosting mishap from Nick Grimshaw. At the same time, secrecy and deception metastasized through the American system, enabling the rise of extra-judicial assassinations, coup plotting, domestic surveillance, torture, and clandestine war.  "Secrecy emanated from the Manhattan Project like a giant radiation emission..." writes Wills, "Because the government was the keeper of the great secret, it began specializing in secret keeping.” Also discussed: Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer  (2023), Henry Kissinger (RIP), Bush and Obama, Snowden, Ellsberg, and the ways in which Bomb Power is a profoundly Catholic book. It's Die Hard in the war on drugs! For this very special episode, Phil and Liam are joined by a VERY special guest: actor, writer, director, comic book author, renaissance man and podcasting superstar PAUL SCHEER! That's right, the effervescent host of top film podcasts Unspooled and How Do This Get Made? chartered a helicopter and flew in to join Phil and Liam for an intensive analysis of this mid--90s classic! The film's complex plot is thus: after a close friend is murdered by international drug traffickers, the vengeful US President (Donald Moffet) tacitly instructs his National Security team to launch a series of secret military strikes against the parties deemed responsible. Soon the new CIA deputy director Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) discovers himself to be an unwitting pawn in a covert, illegal war between American paramilitary forces and the Colombian drug cartels. As the carnage escalates, Ryan must find a way to quell the bloodshed and expose the corruption at the heart of his own government.  CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER is the third entry in the Jack Ryan film franchise that started with THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. That particular movie was of course directed by DIE HARD helmer John McTiernan, meaning that there is plenty of ‘DIE HARD DNA' in the mix here…but does this motion picture also share some key similarities with Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER? The guys assess its influences and its legacy, while also wrestling with another burning question: is this the ultimate ‘Dad movie'? Paul talks passionately about his deep and long-standing connection with DIE HARD and his youthful love for all things Bruce Willis, and the guys go deep on the film's eclectic creative contributors, that includes personalities such as Tom Clancy, Harrison Ford, Philip Noyce, John Milius and Steven Zaillian. They also discuss the virtues of an outstanding ensemble cast that features the likes of Willem Dafoe, James Earl Jones, Anne Archer, Thora Birch, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Raymond Cruz, Benjamin Bratt and Miguel Sandoval. Paul even discusses the part he'd most love to play! The stacked cast makes for a particularly entertaining edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', and a tantalizing trivia quiz provides some stimulating brain-teasers…along with a warm and fuzzy moment or two. On Episode 107 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Steve is joined by Leighton Winstone and filmmaker Kyle Reardon to give you their in-depth review and analysis of legendary director Martin Scorsese's latest film, his epic adaptation of author David Grann's 2017 book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. Scorsese's film drops the book's subtitle and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons and John Lithgow. It tells the story of the discovery of oil in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land and the subsequent series of murders of the Osage people that take place until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery. Scorsese has directed some of the Film ‘89 team's all time favourite films, several of which have had their own in-depth episodes on the podcast. Will Scorsese's latest capture the same degree of success of the other big 2023 historical drama, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, or will audiences, put off by it's considerable runtime, wait for its subsequent release on Apple TV+? Tune in to hear the team's verdict of the latest film from a true Hollywood legend. *Apologies for the varying levels of audio quality on this episode. In keeping with the theme of the film, it was recorded on equipment from the 1920s.

Two weeks ago, this podcast teamed up with Jewish Currents writers and editors Mari Cohen, David Klion, and Raphael Magarik to talk about the way the film portrays the 20th century left. But there is more to be said about the movie. Frequent Time of Monsters contributor, Doug Bell had some bones to pick with the the film. In particular, he feels it slighted the way Oppenheimer compromised with the anti-communist witch-hunters who tried to destroy his career. Was Oppenheimer a martyr or an opportunist? To take up the movie and the longer history of anti-communist repression in the United States, Jeet Heer talks with Doug Bell about the movie and the reality it sometimes fails to do justice.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The BreakPoint Podcast
Oppenheimer and Just War Theory

The BreakPoint Podcast

As unexpected as it was that the Barbie movie would spark such a widespread and intense cultural conversation, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, a film about the brilliant and broken man who became the father of the atomic bomb, has too. The film tells the story of the man who gave the world the power to destroy itself, or as Oppenheimer famously put it, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.”  Atomic weapons have been a constant source of debate since their initial use to end the war against Japan in 1945. At the time, Christians had a dual reaction. On one hand, many breathed a sigh of relief that the long war was over, that the boys would come home, and that there would be no further repeats of the devastation seen at places like Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where Japanese resistance was so fanatical that they fought almost to the last man. On the other hand, Christians shared the widespread sense that a deadly Pandora's Box had been opened and that there was no way to go back to a world before “the Bomb.”  Certainly, the sheer destruction and the immense casualties leveled on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are difficult to justify. America has also been accused of racist motivations in dropping the bomb, and in overlooking the significance of the August 8 Soviet invasion of Manchuria and the weakened state of the Japanese military that late into the war.  The fact remains, numerous factors must be considered in light of some ethical framework. By far the best framework for considering war comes from the Christian contribution of the just war doctrine. Specifically, in what is known as jus in bello, just war doctrine says that for a war, or even part of a war, to be considered moral, it must only be done for the right reasons and in the right ways.   For example, while civilian deaths are inevitable, particularly in modern war, noncombatants must never be targeted. This was recently argued again by Adam Mount in Foreign Policy magazine. He wrote that in dropping the bomb, Japanese civilians weren't merely collateral damage but intentionally killed as an act of terror to scare Tokyo into surrendering. In response, Marc LiVecche wrote in Providence magazine that the attacks were indeed a demonstration to the Japanese government, but the target of destruction were the cities, not the people within them.  It's also significant to keep in mind the pressures of the cultural moment. President Truman faced the brutal question of how to end the immense suffering of a war that had gone on so long, when great suffering would follow no matter what he did. As such, doing nothing would not have been a preferrable moral option. The Japanese empire had for years been perpetuating great evil upon its neighbors, leaving millions dead and millions more enslaved.   Had the Americans gone ahead with the planned “Downfall” invasions of Japan, the death toll might have made the atomic attacks pale in comparison. Simply blockading Japan without direct attacks of any sort would have left millions of Japanese people to slowly starve before the military caved, something they'd already demonstrated an intense unwillingness to do.  From the comfort and safety of distance and time, it is much easier to issue simple proclamation. Reality on the ground at the time is not so simple, and theological reflection, as Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, must be done in the “tempest of the living.” Centuries ago, when asked by a Roman officer if he could, in good Christian conscience, continue his work as a soldier, St. Augustine replied, “Therefore, even in waging war, cherish the spirit of a peacemaker, that, by conquering those whom you attack, you may lead them back to the advantages of peace.” Just war doctrine warns us that any and all actions in a war must not be seen as their own end but only as the means toward a greater end.   War is always awful and sometimes necessary. The great virtue found in just war doctrine is not that it allows for a clean war, free from doubt about our actions. There's no such thing. However, it can help guide those forced to do terrible things in the face of horrible options. To learn more about just war theory, see Just War and Christian Traditions, edited by Eric Patterson and Daryl Charles.   Today's Breakpoint was co-authored by Dr. Timothy Padgett.  For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.

Trueman— Professor of Biblical & Religious Studies at Grover City College—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his recent Wall Street Journal editorial, “A Notre Dame Professor Sues the Student Paper.” Dr. Trueman writes: “A religiously affiliated school with open enrollment must protect the right of all students to question their professors' views. That doesn't mean it must formally recognize groups that are opposed to the school's religious commitments or allow defamatory or slanderous attacks on a professor's character. It does, however, mean that no student should live in fear of being disciplined—let alone being sued—for voicing divergent views or for subjecting a professor's beliefs to public scrutiny. This is basic to the kind of dialogue that is necessary in the classroom and on campus for the promotion of true intellectual engagement rather than rote learning.” You can read the full editorial here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-notre-dame-professor-sues-the-student-paper-abortion-academic-freedom-catholic-3334c4f0?mod=opinion_lead_pos9 5:15pm- While appearing on Nightline, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services Dr. Rachel Levine warned that some children go through “the wrong puberty.” 5:20pm- While speaking at the Aspen Institute, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas boasted about the Biden Administration no longer using the term “illegal alien” to describe illegal border crossings. 5:30pm- The Afternoon Mystery Movie Clip! 5:40pm- While speaking with CTV, director James Cameron joked that he warned about the dangers of artificial intelligence in his 1984 film The Terminator—but no one listened! 6:05pm- On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11 to 10—along party lines—to create new ethics guidelines for the Supreme Court of the United States.
