In this conversation, Chris and Bill delve into the intricacies of character development, storytelling, and pacing in films, particularly focusing on a recent movie directed by Dev Patel. They critique the film's action sequences, cinematic style, and its comparisons to other well-known films like John Wick. The discussion culminates in their final recommendations and ratings, reflecting on the film's strengths and weaknesses.
Dev Patel woke up and chose absolute (heartbreaking) chaos, directing himself in a revenge thriller that's basically "John Wick meets Indian mythology but more SAD and ANGRY." This masterpiece has Patel literally wearing a gorilla mask to get repeatedly beaten in underground fight clubs for money before transforming into a one-man apocalypse against corrupt elites. But what makes this cinematic sledgehammer truly magnificent is how it's simultaneously the most visceral action debut since The Raid AND a scathing political allegory about class warfare that features Dev Patel's character learning knife skills from an outcast Indian communtiy. The movie swings wildly between heartbreaking cultural commentary and scenes where our hero gets his face literally set on fire while fighting in a burning kitchen. Mentioned in this episode:Dev Patel's interview in Vanity FairThe trailer for Dev Patel's animated short, RoborovskiThe Fresh Air interview with Walter Murch, sound designer for Francis Ford Coppola's biggest movies. For centuries, people have whispered about creatures that lurk just beyond the edges of our understanding—beings that live in the shadows, in the forests, beneath the waves. Some dismiss them as folklore, others claim to have seen them with their own eyes. And then, there are those who say they've lived among them.Tonight, we explore three incredible stories—each more unbelievable than the last.First, we journey to Tennessee, where the Carter family claimed to have lived alongside a clan of Sasquatch for decades. At the heart of this astonishing story is Fox, a massive, intelligent male Bigfoot who supposedly learned to understand English and even spoke in broken phrases. Was this a case of true interspecies communication, or one of the most elaborate hoaxes in Bigfoot history? Then, we dive deep—literally—into the legend of mermaid-like fish people, humanoid creatures spotted in remote waters across the world. From ancient sailor accounts to modern-day reports, there have been eerie descriptions of beings that seem half human, half fish—but are they truly mermaids, or something far stranger? Some stories tell of intelligent water-dwelling entities who avoid human contact, while others suggest something more sinister lurking beneath the surface. And finally, we venture to the dense jungles of India, where generations have told of the Monkey Man—a creature said to be part human, part primate, seen leaping across rooftops and vanishing into the night. Some believe it's an undiscovered species, while others insist it's something supernatural, a being that exists in the space between reality and myth. But in 2001, panic swept through the city of Delhi when multiple reports surfaced of a terrifying humanoid figure attacking people in the dead of night. Was this mass hysteria, or something much more real? This episode is a journey through the unbelievable, the unexplained, and the outright bizarre. From the deep forests of Tennessee to the waters where legends of mermaids refuse to die, to the mysterious figure haunting the streets of India—these are stories that defy explanation. So, what do you believe? Are these just myths, or is there something out there, hiding in the spaces we refuse to look? Support the Show! If you love exploring the unknown with me, I need your help! We’re excited to introduce you to a show we know you’ll love: Talk Easy. Hosted by Sam Fragoso, Talk Easy is a weekly series of intimate conversations with artists, activists, and politicians—where people sound like people. Actor Dev Patel has pursued interesting, complex roles in Hollywood since his arrival in Slumdog Millionaire fifteen years ago. He joins us today to discuss Monkey Man, his directorial debut and most personal project to date. At the top, we walk through the Hindu mythology that inspired the film, his decade-long fight to get the project greenlit, and the conditions of filming on an island during the pandemic. Then, Dev describes his intense creative process, how he landed his TV debut at sixteen as a sex-crazed teenager on Skins, and his life-changing role in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. On the back-half, Patel reflects on his years in The Newsroom, the films that followed, including Garth Davis’ Lion and David Lowery’s The Green Knight, and how director/producer Jordan Peele saved Monkey Man from oblivion. What shaped the cinematic landscape of 2024? Join us as we welcome back our esteemed guest, Brandon Cole, for another round of insightful movie reflections. Amidst the challenges posed by the writer's strike and lingering post-COVID effects, we navigate through a year filled with mixed emotions. Despite these hurdles, we set our sights on the promising horizon of 2025, with a special spotlight on the upcoming "Mickey 17." With our trusted friend Letterboxd, we compare our film-watching adventures—boasting 238 viewings on my side to Brandon's impressive 117—and revel in Zendaya's stellar performances in "Dune" and "Challengers," showcasing her dynamic range.Expect a lively discussion as we dissect the highs and lows of recent films. Glenn Powell's commendable roles in "Twisters" and "Hitman" catch our praise, while the pre-release sequel of "Wolves" piques our curiosity. From comedies like "The Book of Clarence" and "Let's Start a Cult" to the action-packed "Monkey Man" and "Bad Boys for Life," our conversation spans multiple genres. We're not shy about debating the strengths and weaknesses of films like "Roadhouse" and "Rebel Ridge." As our conversation unfolds, we can't help but express excitement for future projects like the continuation of the "Dune" series, even as we acknowledge some concerns about the source material.Looking ahead, the anticipation for upcoming releases fuels our discussion with a particular emphasis on "Avatar 3" and an unexpected "Happy Gilmore 2." We also celebrate the rising stars like Tom Holland and Glenn Powell, and explore the potential of animated sequels such as "Mario 2" and "Toy Story 5." We're thrilled about the possibilities these new projects bring, while a bit skeptical about some like the delayed "Mission Impossible." Our podcast reflects on a successful year and charts an even more thrilling course for 2025, with next week's episode promising an exciting dive into the official Bob Dylan story with a fresh perspective from our recurring guest.

As we all emerge from our holiday slumber, we are turning back the clock to one of our favorite interviews from 2024. Whether he's starring in major movies like ELEMENTAL or JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION, or sinking his teeth into roles like Yorgos Lanthimos' KINDS OF KINDNESS, actor Mamoudou Athie follows his gut and ignores the algorithms. When Dev Patel's directorial debut, MONKEY MAN hit theaters, Mamoudou found new depths of admiration for Patel as an actor and director — and he also found a character he could deeply relate to in the determined Bobby/The Kid. It's an amazing conversation. So good, we had to play it twice! Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the January slate of films just around the corner.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Mamoudou Athie
Let's have some real talk: This was not the best year ever at the movies. When you combine lingering production delays from the pandemic with the very real aftereffects of the Hollywood strikes, you had pretty slender pickings when it comes to big-studio pictures. That said: BFG still went to the movies, all year long! We covered all the film festivals, and saw every film we could, major-release and indie. There are still directors giving us intense personal visions and entertaining us with giant tentpoles. The world of entertainment is changing, but this year's relatively weak crop could still be just a blip.Stephen Garrett, who sees every movie in the world, and Sara Stewart, who used to but has backed off to attend graduate school and pursue an actual career, join perpetual cinephile Neal Pollack to talk about their picks. Everyone loved Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Stephen and Sara try to persuade Neal that Dune 2 is great. Sorry, Neal finds Dune 2 boring. Neal himself loved The Apprentice and Challengers. For his art-house pick, he went with La Chimera. Stephen loved The Brutalist and Queer. Sara goes hard in the paint for Dev Patel's Monkey Man.And because this is Book and Film Globe, Jewish-themed movies came up. Sara was a big fan of Between the Temples, which we've discussed exhaustively on this site. Neal and Stephen went for the more Oscar-friendly 'A Real Pain.' Other movies, selected by our critics but not discussed on this episode, include 'I Saw the TV Glow,' Dahomey,' 'Eno,' and 'His Three Daughters.' Finally, Neal gets real squeamish about 'The Substance.' Sara and Stephen both loved it, but Neal cannot tolerate movies where things come out of other things. It's a lot for him. And if movies in 2025 feature things coming out of other things, he'll assign them elsewhere.Enjoy the show!
For one last time in 2024, we're closing out DePalmber: Part De by opening the vault door and welcoming another of our beloved classics into the podcast canon, this time a bleak noir thriller about a foley artist in the film industry who winds up recording proof of a political murder conspiracy while out grabbing sounds for a new low-end horror picture, and gets swept up into a dark world of intrigue where no one is safe. It's 1981's Blow Out, written and directed by Brian De Palma and starring John Travolta, Nancy Allen, Jon Lithgow, Dennis Franz, Peter Boyden, John Aquino and Deborah Everton. Like Michael Mann's Thief (released just four months earlier), it feels like a visionary director establishing countless trademark flourishes in an early outing before really hitting their stride as the decade continued. And just like Thief, that early outing may prove to be a high-water mark neither man ever cleared again. Plus: without any theatrical outing to report on to end the year, we're vibing out with hoarfrost and the music of Waxahatchee. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to this conversation, and we loved this movie so we strongly recommend you do, Blow Out is currently streaming for free on Tubi (at least in Canada) at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Nosferatu, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Abigail, The Brutalist, The Order, Blue Chips, Air, Hustle, Hoosiers, Moneyball, Glory Road, Miracle, The Way Back, The Holdovers, Knives Out, Glass Onion, Law Abiding Citizen, I Saw the TV Glow, Monkey Man, Biggest Heist Ever, Joker: Folie à Deux, A Christmas Story, Black Christmas, Baby Geniuses, The Karate Dog, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, To Grandmother's House We Go, New York Minute, Scarface, Body Double, Pulp Fiction, Gotti, The Fanatic, Dexter, Conclave, Cliffhanger, Nightcrawler, and Nope among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off 2025 with the Bernie Mac baseball comedy Mr. 3000, to celebrate J Mo crossing the 3000 films watched lifetime milestone at some point in the year that was 2024. That's as good a reason to watch it as any I suppose, and you can find Mr. 3000 streaming for free on Hoopla at the moment. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

__________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Let It Bleed" sprechen wir im Podcast (12:27) – "Gimme Shelter"(28:53) – "Country Honk"(35:15) – "Live With Me"(39:55) – "Monkey Man"(46:02) – "Midnight Rambler"(53:04) – "You Can't Always Get What You Want"__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "Let It Bleed" findet ihr hier: https://www.swr.de/swr1/rp/meilensteine/the-rolling-stones-let-it-bleed-100.html __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Wiz RECOMMENDS Monkey Man Monkey Man is a film that makes critical rookie mistakes. It expands when it should retract. It pulls punches when it should have hit hard. It strives for ambition when it should have kept things to the fundamentals. Dev Patel's revenge thriller about a man named "Kid" who gets into a sinister organization to find a way to murder the people who killed his mother should have just stuck with this simple, concise premise. Instead, Patel decided to add subplots revolving around spirituality and politics that do more to distract from the main story than to enhance it. It's easy to understand why he went this route: there is a complex history involving India, its politics and the spirituality of its people. But was it entirely necessary to put this into a bloody, brutal revenge fantasy? The bloating of the plot is further compounded by the overall story of the film, which is formulaic and tropey at best. If you've seen any revenge thriller, the elements that you'd expect are all in there: Quiet, but menacing lead Over the top evil villains Beautiful but scared woman who is in the crosshairs A person or group of people who help the main character find his strength to get back up. Now, this isn't necessarily bad on the face of it: A good revenge thriller can be quite formulaic but still be exciting and satisfying. To do that, you need really good action...and Monkey Man is decent overall. It is clear Patel can do the hand-to-hand fighting real well as he executes the stunts to feel believable. On top of that, some of the fight scenes are particularly visceral and brutal, showing all sorts of skin tearing, blood and broken bones. But the action is marred by some of the decisions Patel made behind the camera. For example, during the first big fight scenes in the club at the end of the 1st act, the camera movement in the action scenes jump around and feel way too chaotic. Now, there's likely a reason why Patel went this route: to show the inexperience and exasperation of the main character in all the chaos. But that could have easily been told by Patel and the other actors showing that in the action. The camera placement and movement was too much to show too little. What's odd is that Patel did correct this in the big finale of the film: all of the fight scenes and stunts are clearly visible and shows all of the fighting in its brutal, bloody glory. And yet, another strange thing that Patel does in this film is deciding to pull back on some of the brutality. The visuals of the film portray the place the film is set as dark, grungy, grim but bathed in neon light and fluorescent bulbs. You see a lot of squalor and dirty, delpated areas throughout the film. The visual storytelling of the film is saying that this will be a brutal, messy film. And yet, Patel in some scenes shys away from the brutal violence in some scenes. Honestly, the one thing I will remember with Monkey Man is that it feels like a film where the director is working through his first time jitters as the film progresses in plot. Patel goes for something bigger and more thoughtful in his first go around where, honestly, he should have been sticking to the basics and just telling a brutally efficient story. And yet, that's what makes this film interesting: it's a visual example of someone getting their legs up as an artist and finding that vision while showing the cuts, bruises and warts that most directors would rather you not see. As that type of curiosity, it's an interesting and entertaining watch.

Story One – The Monkey Man of Delhi Urban legends exist around the world. Mostly, they keep us from parking in dark places at night, or from talking to creepy kids with dark-coloured eyes. But what happens when an urban legend goes viral, causing so much panic that people begin to die because of it? That's precisely what happened in India in 2001, when residents reported some 350 terrifying encounters with what would eventually become known as the Monkey Man of Delhi. Story Two – The Dread of the Djinn Many ancient texts speak of supernatural beings representing the forces of good and evil. However, not all of these entities fit quite so neatly into such categories. For centuries, people in the Arabic world have spoken of creatures who bring fortune and pain in equal measure. But despite the age of these legends, recent reports from the Near East seem to indicate that even our modern world is subject to the dread of the Djinn. Hey, gang! There were some delivery problems this week, so we only have one new movie on the docket: MONKEY MAN! (Just kidding. That's on Patreon. Patrons can listen to that episode here.) No, this week we cover the new Dust Bowl psychological drama/horror flick HOLD YOUR BREATH (2:22), starring Sarah Paulson as a woman living through the Dust Bowl (natch) and kind of losing her mind because of some maybe-it's-real-maybe-not-tee-hee specter called The Grey Man who lives in the dust. Sound like a concept ripe for horror? No? Ya ain't wrong! We're not going to lie: We didn't like this one and we go off the rails talking about it because why not? Also making an appearance this week: The Bikini Inspector! (We weren't kidding about going off the rails, or as the Monkey Man whould say, going bananas.) Enjoy! We did!
This week we journey to India for a tale of vengeance and justice is about the explode into action. Join us for Monkey Man.

On Monday of this week, Apple held one of its splashy media events. This one was used to show off its next round of iPhones, AirPods, and Apple Watches. These are three of its biggest products, and all of the design tweaks feel very familiar to the current Apple universe. But Apple has also trotted out some new tricks, like sleep apnea detection in the Apple Watch and a new feature that instantly turns a pair of AirPods Pro into hearing aids. And of course, the company is also very keen to get consumers hyped up about the iPhone's new Apple Intelligence features—even if those flashy AI tricks won't start becoming available until next month. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED product reviews editors Adrienne So and Julian Chokkattu join us after Apple's "Glowtime" event to go over all the big news from Cupertino.Show Notes:Our roundup of everything Apple announced this week. Read Julian's WIRED stories about how the iPhone 16 is incorporating AI and which iPhone 16 model is right for you. Dive into Lauren's story about whether Apple's AI promises will actually equate to more iPhone sales. Read Chistopher Null's story about how AirPods Pro could disrupt the hearing aid industry. Follow all WIRED's Apple coverage.Recommendations:Adrienne recommends the book Status and Culture by W. David Marx. Julian recommends the Dev Patel action movie Monkey Man. Lauren recommends that you recommend a good chair to help her back pain. Mike recommends Manning Fireworks, the new album by musician MJ Lenderman.Adrienne So can be found on Threads @adso_sheehan.
