Hey Food Allergy Mama! It's a summer Saturday. The family is heading to a splash pad picnic with some friends. Sunscreen? Check. Towels? Check. Cooler full of snacks? Double check. They even remembered the epinephrine! They get to the park, unload everything, and start setting up. The kids run off squealing into the water, and the grownups get busy laying out blankets and trying to find a bit of shade. A few hours go by, everyone's hot and happy, and then it's time for lunch. That's when Mom realizes—uh oh. The epinephrine is still in the glove compartment. She runs to grab it, and the second she opens the car door, it's like a wall of heat hits her. It's got to be 100 degrees in there, maybe more. She pulls the pen out, and it's warm to the touch. She panics for a second. Is it ruined? Is it still okay to use? Should they leave? Should they eat? And of course, the guilt creeps in. “How did I forget this? I know better.” But here's the thing: it happens, even to the most seasoned allergy parents. In this episode, we're going to talk about why temperature matters when it comes to epinephrine—and how to avoid this moment altogether, without needing to be perfect. I'm cheering for you! I'm sharing what happened when my body finally told me to slow down. I got sick with more than a cold or flu. Nothing too serious, but it was enough to make me stop, reflect, and realize just how much I'd been carrying. If you've been brushing off your own needs, thinking you'll deal with them later, this episode will remind you how important you are.  I hope this episode is your source of encouragement and kindness this Mother's Day.  I'm cheering for you! Dear Food Allergy Mom, I remember the days when I was able to just go to someone's house and enjoy the feast they created and only worry about bringing one dish.  Since food allergies, I've been forced to learn how to make full meals by myself.  I now cook our special family meals for Christmas Eve, Christmas dinner, and sometimes New Year's Eve and Christmas morning brunch. At first, it was hard.  I didn't know the timing of foods and I didn't have a flow, which meant there were a few holidays when I thought we would eat around 5 but ended up eating around 8:00 instead.   YIKES!   Not to mention all the time I spend in the kitchen. For a while, I felt like I was bonding with my kitchen more than my family during one of the most important celebrations of the year!   This is why I knew something had to change, and I needed to come up with a plan.   So over the years I've tried new things, focused on what worked the previous year, and got rid of what didn't.  What I do now has evolved over the last 17 years, but I feel like I've got a system down pat.  Now I can enjoy my family during the holidays instead of being chained to the kitchen! Let me tell you if I can do it, so can you, with the help of what I've learned over the years.   Here are my best tips for planning and cooking all those big Holiday meals PLUS listen to the end where I'm answering some of your MOST burning questions that you told me were MOST stressful for you when it comes to hosting and prepping allergy-friendly meals during the holidays. Hey Food Allergy Mom, As food allergy parents, it's heartbreaking to hear about tragedies caused by anaphylaxis. It feels personal, like we've lost one of our own. Our hearts break, and it's hard to shake the sadness that comes with knowing such a loss could have been prevented. It's okay to feel this way—it's human. But while we support the families affected and work through our own emotions, we also need to be mindful of how those feelings can shift into fear and anxiety, especially for our own loved ones. Today, we're going to talk about how to manage those emotions, stay grounded, and focus on staying strong together as a community. I'll give you 3 important stats that will hopefully reduce your anxiety PLUS I'll give you positive examples of things we've done as a food allergy family that may seem scary, but have turned out well and are completely doable with the right preparation.  I hope this episode decreases your anxiety and empowers you and your child! That mortality rate is about the same as 1 in every 333 cases of anaphylaxis.   Of course, we never want to even THINK about being that .3%, but these are important numbers to know because the statistics ARE ON OUR SIDE.    For example, the odds of tragedy from anaphylaxis, if it occurs, are MUCH LESS than the odds of tragedy in a car crash (which is 1 in 93 vs. 1 in 333 for anaphylaxis)**, yet we never think twice about driving!  Instead, we take precautions and use safety measures to make it safer.   * Source: https://www.jacionline.org/article/S0091-6749(13)02738-3/fulltext#:~:text=The%20overwhelming%20major....  ** Source: National Safety Council https://injuryfacts.nsc.org/all-injuries/preventable-death-overview/odds-of-dying/    How Case Fatality Rate is Calculated:  Case Fatality Rate is calculated by dividing the number of deaths from a specified disease over a defined period by the number of individuals diagnosed with the disease during that time; the resulting ratio is then multiplied by 100 to yield a percentage. But what if you didn't have to live in fear of traces of allergen and every ‘may contain' label? What would that REALLY LOOK LIKE in everyday life?I thought you might want to know what it's like not to have to worry about cross-contact and may contain allergen labeling because that may help you decide if treatment is right for your family. We started doing OIT about 7 years ago.  About a year and a half ago, we got to the point where we didn't have to worry about “may contain traces of peanuts and tree nuts” anymore. Our whole world flipped upside down, in a good way!Even so, some fears have been hard to overcome, and surprisingly, some things changed less than I thought they would. So if you're wondering what it looks like to be “in-between” where you can have traces of allergen, but no more than that, this episode is for you!So grab your favorite drink, settle in, and let's get to it. Dear Food Allergy Mama, Today we're giving you a food allergy resource for real life.  I saw this juicy internet question and wanted to weigh in… My daughters ages 1 & 6 have allergies to nuts and peanuts.  My brother is getting married and both he and the bride are Vegans. Vegan foods often have nuts in them and sure enough, they've shared the adult menu with me and it contains just about every nut you could think of! They said they've spoken to the caterers and they can plan the kid's menu around my girl's allergies. I would like them to go further and put a sign by the food saying “Some guests have nut allergies so please use hand sanitizer after eating”, however, my brother and his bride have refused to do this.   I feel like my kid's allergens will be everywhere, and that they're in danger. I wish my brother would change the menu. Am I being irrational? Should I expect them to change the menu to accommodate my kid's food allergies? Is there anything I could do differently? Ok, friends, judging by the internet comments that this question received, this is a DOOZY.  Today, I want to dive deeper and see if we can not only bust a big food allergy myth but also give you 3 steps for calmly deciding if events are right for your family without being fear-based.
