Despite trade-war fears and economic turbulence, Chicago CEOs are overwhelmingly bullish; some extended school trips now carry price tags rivaling a family vacation — plus how a “digital detox” can improve your mental health.
Two former international educators, Nick and Joy Owens, lay out what a lot of teachers secretly want to know: how to keep global education alive without staying trapped in the classroom forever. Their story runs through Taiwan, Honduras, Alaska, Arizona, and back to the U.S., and it's packed with the real-world stuff teachers actually deal with, like credential renewal, licensure headaches, Praxis retakes, and the post-COVID classroom burnout that can make even great teachers start plotting their escape.Nick describes getting started overseas in Taiwan after the 2008–2009 recession knocked his U.S. job out from under him, beginning with an intense English-immersion “summer camp” style program before moving into a growing school environment where he taught science and even launched AP-level courses. Joy's path begins with growing up in Zambia and schooling in Kenya, then jumping into teaching in Honduras with zero classroom experience, learning the hard way that classroom management is not optional, and later earning a master's in ESL before landing in Taiwan where she and Nick met.A big theme: teachers abroad can't ignore home-country paperwork. The conversation gets practical about how quickly licenses lapse and how painful it is to recover (including re-testing) if you let it slide. Then the episode pivots into their current chapter: they bought and now run Butler Travel, a teacher-informed travel agency that builds custom, education-focused student tours (not cookie-cutter packages), including options like homestays, local expert guides, service learning, and clear “all-in” pricing that parents can understand without getting ambushed by extra fees. They also talk through what actually makes student travel educational: structured learning goals, space for reflection, and the uncomfortable truth that too much downtime creates chaos, but zero downtime creates misery. Along the way you get a memorable safari lesson about risk awareness… via animal poop identification, because humans apparently need comedy to learn anything.Butler Travel contact mentioned in the episode: website butlertravel.com and their planning guide at butlertravel.com/plan.Stats Nick cites (attributed to “Wise Travel Federation” in the conversation):Students who travel show 59% improved grades95% graduation rate among students who participated in trips86% higher intellectual curiosity80% higher motivation and engagement[00:00] The Role of JP Mint Consulting[01:48] Nick and Joy's International Teaching Experiences[04:55] Cultural Shifts and Challenges in Teaching Abroad[07:53] Navigating Credentialing and Re-credentialing[10:47] The Importance of Keeping Credentials Updated[13:50] From Teaching to Travel: A New Journey[15:46] The Impact of Travel on Education[23:01] Customizing Educational Travel Experiences[30:53] Butler Travel: Tailored Tours for Teachers[39:12] Enriching Experiences with Local Expertise[40:03] Navigating Travel Logistics During Crisis[42:54] The Importance of Flexibility in Travel Planning[45:37] Understanding Educational Travel Needs[48:16] Memorable Travel Experiences and Stories[52:31] Essential Items for International Travel[55:54] Final Thoughts on Educational TravelAdditional Gems Related to Our Show:Greg's Favorite Video From Living Overseas - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQWKBwzF-hwSignup to be our guest https://calendly.com/itpexpat/itp-interview?month=2025-01Our Website - https://www.itpexpat.com/Our FaceBook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/itpexpatJPMint Consulting Website - https://www.jpmintconsulting.com/Greg's Personal YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLs1B3Wc0wm6DR_99OS5SyzvuzENc-bBdOBooks By Gregory Lemoine:International Teacher Guide: Finding the "Right Fit" 2nd Edition (2025)"International Teaching: The Best-kept Secret in Education"

MPs on the Treasury Select Committee are seeking answers from HMRC after thousands of parents have had their child benefit stopped because they took a holiday abroad. The mistakes happened during a fraud crackdown on people emigrating from the UK but still claiming the benefit for their children. Now, among all the financial pressures of recent years the costs faced by parents for school trips has continued to go up. And it's not just a cause for concern for parents, but also for school governors. The body which represents them in England, the National Governance Association, has told Money Box that schools should try to help parents with these costs to ease the growing financial pressures many feel. Plus, a big change is underway aimed at helping victims of domestic violence in financial trouble. And we continue to look at Budget issues raised by listeners. This week it's potential changes to council tax. Speculation suggests that the two highest bands, and the way bands are decided, could be subject to change later this month.Presenter: Paul Lewis Reporters: Dan Whitworth and Eimear Devlin Editor: James Graham Senior News Editor: Sara Wadeson

In this special extended episode of Talk'n TRM, host Bex Deadman is joined by three expert guests — Joël Marier, Mike Blakey, and Julian Penney — to explore the newly released ISO 31031: Managing Risks for Youth and School Trips. All three guests played a key role in the development of this important international standard. As members of ISO Working Group 9 (WG9), Joël, Mike, and Julian were part of a team of more than 30 global experts who contributed comments, suggestions, and expertise to improve and shape the final standard. In this episode, the group discusses the origins of ISO 31031, why it was needed, and how it supports those involved in planning and managing youth and school travel. Drawing on their own experiences in education, travel safety, and standards development, Joël, Mike, and Julian share their insights on what makes ISO 31031 so significant and how it sets a new benchmark for safety in youth and school travel. Claire Hogan contacted the morning focus team regarding the expenses related to school trips and her own experience dealing with these expenses. Claire explained how she herself was not able to contribute to the costs for her own childrens' school tour and outlined how she isn't the only parent experiencing this. Denis agreed with Claire and said that school costs are putting immense pressure on parents and families. He discussed with Alan that the government have been trying to relieve some of the pressure but it simply is not enough.

An agreement to renew visits by Israeli schoolchildren to Poland to learn about the Holocaust has been criticized as whitewashing the role played by some Poles in the murder of Jews. Last month the Polish and Israeli governments agreed to renew the school trips but the details were only published last week, sparking major criticism in Israel and from international Holocaust scholars. Under the terms of the agreement, which still needs to be ratified by the Israeli and Polish parliaments, each Israeli delegation must now visit one site from a list of 32 recommended sites that stress the Polish narrative of the war. The sites include museums and memorial sites that document crimes committed by the Germans against non-Jewish Poles and even sites that commemorate Poles who participated in the murder of Jews. KAN's Mark Weiss spoke with Jeremy Leigh, a lecturer of Jewish history at the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem , author of Jewish Journeys and an educational guide of Jewish trips to Poland. Ever since WAB's founding almost 30 years ago, China Studies trips have been an integral part of learning. WAB's China Studies department meticulously plans and organizes annual trips with teachers that take students to some of the most historically and culturally significant destinations in China. In this week's WAB Podcast, WAB's China Studies Director Wenjing Wang and Middle School Principal Marina Frias-Gavidia discuss the importance of these trips for learning and China engagement and reflect on the innovative approach WAB used to keep the learning going throughout the pandemic years. China Studies trips comprise of day trips in and around Beijing, as well as “residential trips” that take students further afield for 3-5 days. Starting in Grade 6, students can choose from three themes related to sports, science or art, with China engagement always being the core focus. Previous trips have taken students to ancient villages, homestays in ancient water towns, major cities like Shanghai and sites of natural beauty like the grasslands. Students have previously also replicated the famous Long March, enjoyed white water rafting, cycling through the countryside and much more. To learn more about these exciting China Studies trips and also what parents can do to ensure a seamless trip, please make sure to listen to this week's episode.

Returning to semi-normal school life after almost two years of interruption has been a huge challenge for school staff, from the logistics of bubbles and closures, to the mental hurdle of mixing in person with so many people again after long periods at home. It's understandable, then, that school trips may not have been top of teachers' and leaders' lists of priorities of late. But could they actually provide a much-needed boost to pupil mental health in these particularly challenging times? According to NHS data, the prevalence of mental health conditions in young people is at an all-time high, with around https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/mental-health-of-children-and-young-people-in-england/2020-wave-1-follow-up (one in six children aged 5 to 16 thought to be suffering from a probable mental disorder). Ahead of Children's Mental Health Week, Tes senior editor, Simon Lock, meets Lauren Cross, an ex-teacher who is now a research assistant at the University of Cambridge with a specific research interest in mental health in schools in the UK. Joining the conversation is Sam Sillito, headteacher at Queensgate Primary School on the Isle of Wight, a school with a commitment to out-of-classroom learning. A group of parents, exasperated by a lack of repayment for school trips that can't proceed, has complained to the Ministry of Education seeking an independent inquiry into the endorsement and use of a non-bonded travel agent. They want support from the Ministry to bring a Commerce Commission complaint into the way school-travel specialist Student Horizons has gone about returning money for trips that can't be undertaken. The situation differs from one Nine to Noon highlighted four weeks ago, the collapse of Antipodeans Abroad. In that case, the company's insurer eventually agreed to honour claims and repay parents the cost of the trip. Here, parents feel the fact Student Horizons holds the contract with the school, not them, is stymying their ability to seek refunds. Kathryn talks to two parents, Kim Matheson and Guy Quartermain, about the situation they're in, and Brett Calkin, who is chair of the Board of Trustees at Palmerston North Girls' High School, about what the Board and school is doing to get parents' money back. Also joining Kathryn is Student Horizon's founder and owner Jamie Wansey.

Overview: After taking my daughter to the Animal Kingdom - and talking about it - I started thinking about all the trips I took to Disney World as a school group. I reflect on that, tell you some stories, and reminisce about the experience. Notes: One of the really great benefits of growing up in Florida was having the ability to take annual school trips to the parks, in addition to the regular family trips. It really couldn't be beat. February 2015 Bursaries for disadvantaged schools have Been added to Bletchley Park’s expanding education programme Winton Global Investment Management is funding a pilot bursary scheme to allow free school trips to Bletchley Park. Bletchley Park welcomes more than 9,000 schoolchildren every year to its thriving education programme. The bursaries will be available to schools which might be most in need of financial support. Each bursary will cover the cost of coach hire and 40 children attending two workshops during their time at Bletchley Park. The first school to participate in the scheme was Greenleys Junior School in Milton Keynes. A group of year six students were given a Codes and Ciphers workshop, tried their hands at operating a real World War Two Enigma machine and toured the uniquely historic site. Victoria Worpole, the Bletchley Park Trust’s Director of Learning and Collections, says “These bursaries will help enormously by making exciting and engaging school trips to Bletchley Park available to children to whom it might have been out of reach. It’s vital that we inspire young minds. Encouraging children to put themselves in the Codebreakers’ shoes to solve seemingly impossible problems brings the STEM subjects to life.” The scheme forms part of a greatly improved education programme at Bletchley Park. Cyber Security Workshops are now available either as part of a school visit or at the school itself, since the appointment of the first Online Safety Officer. Schools, colleges, clubs or societies can book an Enigma Outreach visit, where Bletchley Park’s Education Officer demonstrates a real World War Two Enigma machine which participants can try using themselves.
