Joining me on today's episode is Denise Woodard, Founder of Partake food, the gluten-free, vegan, and allergy-friendly snack brand working to eradicate childhood food insecurity. The lightbulb moment came as Denise's 1-year-old daughter Vivian was diagnosed with several difficult food allergies, both limiting her diet and making the eating process a whole less fun. A nudge in the right direction from nanny Matha, and a bump-in with a stranger suggesting Denise enter a local pitch competition, and Denise ended her decade long career with coca-cola to pursue this idea full-time. Partake was founded, the US-based line of super yummy snacks that are now in more than 6,000 retail stores across the US including Target and Whole Foods, on their mission to make better-for-you, safe snacking enjoyable, inclusive and accessible In this episode, we chat about Denise's purpose-driven approach to creating this company, how she got the likes of Rihanna and Jay Z investing in her business, and what the early grind looked like for her when she was just starting out. Some of our fave takeaways centre around the importance of getting as close to people as possible, using the value of email and text marketing (an absolute must in 2022!) and being willing to start small. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, about 32 million people in the US have food allergies, which means allergy friendly food brands not only have a large audience base, but are also necessities. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about three popular allergy friendly food companies: Partake Foods, Enjoy Life and Free2b Foods. Each company offers a wide variety of sweet and savory snack foods free from all major allergens while prioritizing taste and quality ingredients. Sydney asks the team whether they think we'll see large food and beverage companies offering allergen-free versions of popular snacks or whether smaller allergy friendly companies will have a monopoly over the space. The team also wonder whether there are any allergy friendly meal kit companies since the space is mainly comprised of snack food companies. Also, in this episode, Sydney asks whether best before dates could be contributing to food waste. While food and beverage manufacturers have used the labels for decades to estimate peak freshness, consumers are confused about date codes, often causing more food waste than necessary. Unlike ‘use by' dates, which can be found on perishable food items like meat, dairy and produce, best before dates have nothing to do with food safety and may encourage consumers to throw out food that is perfectly safe to eat. To tackle this problem, some UK grocery chains recently removed best before dates from pre-packaged fruits and vegetables. The team wonder whether it was the right decision to remove best before dates altogether but conclude that it's best to use the senses to determine whether food is safe to eat. If you aren't hacking, tracking, and prioritizing your sleep, it's time to start. Sleep is a pillar of high performance that affects pretty much everything you do. If you want to perform at your best, you have to get deep, restorative sleep. You know that, but are you doing it?I've interviewed many sleep experts on my podcast. (Psst… I even created a 14-Day Sleep Challenge that teaches you how to hack your sleep.) This interview, however, is a bit different. I've invited a new kind of sleep expert on the show.Jack Dell'Accio spent the past 16 years studying mattresses. He set out to hack every aspect of mattresses, from pressure relief to posture support to toxin-free materials. You know that plastic, chemical smell that fills your bedroom when you get a new mattress? That's caused by off-gassing—a combination of volatile chemicals that turn into gas and fill the air in your bedroom as you break in your mattress. Research has found that many off-gassing chemicals are respiratory irritants and can cause you to develop chemical sensitivities[*][*]. They're nasty compounds and you don't want to spend eight hours a night breathing them in. That's where Jack comes in. After years of research, Jack created a new type of memory foam – a natural rubber latex-based foam – that provides support and pressure relief, without the off-gassing irritants that you find in old school memory foam. Jack founded Essentia, the first mattress company that uses materials that are good for your body, your health, and your environment. It's a major upgrade over memory foam, both in terms of sleeping experience and chemical content. Essentia manufactures its mattresses and sleep products in its own GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic factory. These are the two most important certifications when it comes to organic mattresses and organic mattress manufacturing. They've also had their mattresses tested by experts at Johns Hopkins. In today's episode, you're going to learn the science behind building a better mattress, and why upgrading your mattress will improve almost every aspect of your body and brain. Jack and I also cover:The many chemicals hiding in cheap mattresses Why, thanks to a backwards California law, most mattresses contain several pounds of flame retardant chemicals (and how Essentia makes their mattresses without those chemicals.)Why 25% of NHL players use Essentia mattressesThe connection between cheap mattresses and chemical sensitivitiesHow Essentia created a proprietary EMF barrier foam formulaHow a high-quality mattress makes your brain work betterA sleep surface has to have six key elements to establish a sleep environment that regenerates the body during sleep. Essentia mattresses score at the top of all six. Here's what to look for:Temperature Control (natural thermoregulation/ active cooling)Allergy Friendly (allergen-friendly materials)Accelerated Recovery (support and pressure redistribution)Optimized Sleep (adaptive accelerated response to reduce movement interruptions)Organically Clean (clean, non-toxic materials & an organic mineral formula that drives EMF patterns)Proper Posture (eliminates negative space to properly support the back)The mattress you sleep on matters just as much as all the other high-performance lifestyle choices you make. In this episode, you're going to learn the science behind building a better mattress and why so many professional athletes choose Essentia.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Moms are always trying to solve problems, especially when it comes to helping your own children, so when Denise Woodard’s daughter Vivienne was diagnosed with a laundry list of food allergies it inspired her to take an entrepreneurial route she never imagined! Denise Woodard is the Founder/CEO of Partake Foods, an allergy-friendly snack company that she was inspired to start because of her daughter Vivienne's experience with food allergies. With so little options in the market for delicious healthy allergy-friendly snacks for kids, Denise, who had a background working in emerging brands for Coca-Cola and a scrappy entrepreneurial spirit decided, why not make a product for her daughter herself. After many cookie iterations, lots of LinkedIn stalking and a little luck, that vision has turned into a multi-million dollar allergy-friendly food company that will be in 5,500 stores by the end of 2021. On top of that success, Denise is the first woman of color to raise over $1 million for a food startup which includes a $4.8 million series A funding round in December 2020, led by investors including Rihanna and Marcy Venture Partners, Jay-Z’s firm who led the initial $1MM seed round. I love how Denise not only took a real problem in her own family but also created a company that strongly believes in a greater social mission and is giving more women and people of color the opportunity to “partake” at the table too. But besides building a company and being a role model for other women of color, Denise is an incredible mom and shares insights into how she was able to build this company, raise capital and make it happen while raising her daughter. We Get to Know gluten free baker Rachel Conners from Bakerita. We loved our chat with Rachel, the San Diego girl behind the popular blog Bakerita.com. When Rachel was only 16 years old, she had already fallen in love with baking and knew it's what she wanted to do with her life. After some great advice from her father to follow her heart and persuasion from her sister, she started her baking blog. Eight years later, she is still in the kitchen, baking up gluten-free, refined sugar-free, and dairy-free treats that taste just as good as their more decadent, sugar-filled counterparts. In this episode we discuss the details of her business, what she does with all those baked treats, and her future goals and dreams for the future. She also announced her cookbook project during our show, so congrats to Rachel! Her blog is jam-packed with gorgeous wholesome baking recipes that will feed your cravings but not fill you with toxins. Listen in to hear her story, you'll love getting to know Rachel. Get to Know recipe developer and allergy friendly food blogger Samah Dada of Dada Eats. Samah grew up in Newport Beach, California and spent part of high school there and in London, England. She says that London is at fault for making her the foodie that she is today – from hole in the wall Indian joints to some of the most incredible Sicilian style pizza she’s ever had, London’s foodscape was transformative for her palate. She eventually moved back to California and attended UC Berkeley where she was completely engulfed by amazing gastronomy. Living and studying so close to a city as amazing as San Francisco, not to mention having access to some of the best food out there (talking to you Chez Panisse, Vik’s Chaat House, Ici Ice Cream, Bi-Rite Creamery…) has made her into a human “Yelp” for her friends and family. Her time at Berkeley solidified her desire to have a more active part in the culinary world. She uses her passion for cooking and baking to create unique, healthy, allergy-friendly, yet still delicious meals and treats for you to enjoy, find the recipes on her blog dadaeats.com! In our interview, Samah talks about her current life living in New York City and working in broadcast television while also pursuing her passion for wellness and recipe development. She even tells us what it was like being a guest on the Today Show! She believes that health and wellness means a scoop of ice cream as much as it does a kale salad. She has developed a love for alternative baking, swapping out flour for grain free options and creating recipes that are dairy free. She is mostly plant based but with balance, she is not giving up her ice cream. Samah was a joy to chat with… her ultimate goal is to host a tv show that is rich in culture, travel and food from a woman’s perspective. Listen in, we know you’ll love hearing her story!
