In this raw and eye-opening episode of Don't Eat Poop!, our hosts Matt and Francine tackle one of the deadliest (and most misunderstood) topics in the food industry: food allergies. Prompted by a tragic case of a mislabeled cookie causing a grandmother's death, they break down how simple labeling mistakes and casual attitudes toward allergens can have lethal consequences. From cross-contact catastrophes to faux allergy fibbers, this episode dives deep into the real-life implications of allergy mismanagement in both food service and retail.Whether you're managing a restaurant kitchen, hosting kids at summer camp, or buying cookies at a supermarket, this one's a must-listen for anyone serious about food safety compliance. In this episode:

"Welcome! Shoes off please." In many Asian countries, removing shoes when you enter someone's home is expected – it shows respect and ensures cleanliness. In other places, such as the UK, however, the social norms are more ambiguous. Some Brits might have a strict "shoes off" rule, while others may be squeamish about seeing others' socks or bare feet. What do the scientists say? “欢迎!请脱鞋。” 在许多亚洲国家,预计进入某人的家时,脱鞋 - 它表现出尊重并确保清洁。 但是,在其他地方,例如英国,社会规范更加模棱两可。 有些英国人可能有严格的“鞋子”规则,而另一些人可能会因为看到别人的袜子或赤脚而感到沮丧。 科学家怎么说?If you remove your shoes at the door for cleanliness, you're probably thinking about the visible dirt – urban dust, mud and grass that has hitched a ride from the outside world on the sole of your shoe. But the real problems are microscopic. A review of research called 'Shoe soles as a potential vector for pathogen transmission' found a high prevalence of dangerous bacteria on shoe soles, which could lead to illness. Children under five are particularly at risk because of their closeness to the floor and developing immune systems. Germs aside, shoe soles can also bring in nasty chemicals like pesticides and herbicides, exposure to which can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, according to a study by Muhammad Sarwar, published in Cogent Medicine. Allergens such as pollen can also enter your home via your shoes, which can be a big issue if you suffer with hay fever or have respiratory issues. Isn't your home meant to be a safe haven? But it's not just about hygiene. Going shoeless can improve things such as balance, body awareness and strength and stability in your muscles, according to a medically reviewed article called 'Does Walking Barefoot Have Health Benefits?'. "In theory, walking barefoot more closely restores our 'natural' walking pattern, also known as our gait," explains foot and ankle specialist Jonathan Kaplan. In cultures where a shoe-free home is the norm, the reasons are backed by science. And in places where the rules are less clear, maybe it's time to think about leaving our outdoor shoes at the threshold. There's an old African proverb that states "When you leave your shoes at the doorstep, you leave your troubles behind."

Robyn Lao knows first hand how challenging it can be to eat at restaurants when living with food allergies. Since her nine-year-old daughter Addie was diagnosed with several life-threatening food allergies as an infant, the family has generally avoided eating out. So when the family recently ventured out to a local restaurant for a meal, they were blown away by the clarity and transparency the menu provided regarding food allergens. That experience inspired the Lao family to introduce ADDE's bill, which would require restaurants in California to label menu items that contain any of the 9 major food allergens. Today, on Consuming the Craft, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Jeffrey Rickert, a graduate of our program who has shifted his focus from brewing to food safety education. Jeffrey is now actively working to ensure the safety of food and beverages across North Carolina through the NC BioNetwork. Our conversation covered everything from his journey post-graduation to his current role in training businesses on allergen safety and food handling practices. Jeffrey shared how his passion for training others in the brewing industry perfectly fit his new career path. Through NC BioNetwork, he helps a wide range of businesses, including breweries, beverage producers, and even cosmetics manufacturers, navigate the complexities of food safety. His expertise has become invaluable, especially in understanding and mitigating allergen risks within the industry. "If it comes in contact with our skin or we eat it, you guys help the folks figure out what's wrong." ~Jeffrey Rickert Today on Consuming the Craft: · Jeffrey Rickert graduated in 2016 and initially worked in a yeast production facility, ultimately becoming a head brewer at a local craft brewery.· He now works with NC BioNetwork, providing food safety education to various industries across North Carolina, including breweries and cosmetics manufacturers.· The U.S. recognizes nine major allergens, while the UK recognizes fourteen, and Japan has about twenty.· Proper cleaning and testing for allergens in brewing equipment are crucial to prevent severe allergic reactions.· The NC BioNetwork offers training on food safety systems like HACCP and preventative controls for human food.· There's funding available in North Carolina for companies interested in food safety training through local community colleges.· New and emerging beverages may have different properties that present unique safety challenges, such as lower alcohol content and higher residual sweetness.· Proper documentation and TTB approval are necessary for using non-standard ingredients in brewing. Learn how to make informed decisions for better health in today's Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast episode! Your bones will thank you! “I think the biggest problem for so many people is that they want to go to a Walmart or another store like that and buy the biggest cheapest container that they can, and they do not realize that there's probably a lot of starchy stuff in there, like tapioca starch or rice starch and things like that, as fillers, and that's not great. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Nishan: It is extremely rare to find a genuine healer in this day and age. I am still trying to filter through the massive amounts of lies and deception regarding the prostate. Our food and water supply is saturated with chemicals and hormone disruptors. What can I take that will neutralize and eliminate all the crap in my body and rebalance my hormones ? Is there something that will shrink the prostate and crush the multi million dollar industry that's making money off of this illness that is plaguing men ? Anonymous: I have listened to all your podcasts on both allergies and EBV/viruses. I am in the recovery phase from getting EBV in Dec 2023 (27 yo F, had 104+°F fever for 14+ days). I follow all your protocols and have been trying best to support my recovery. However, the allergens here have been hitting me very severely since getting EBV and causing alot of inflammation. I want to try sublingual allergy drops but want to know your advice for when it would be best to start them in relation to my recovery? Could I start them now, or would it be too much for my immune system to handle? If not, what would be a good indication from my body for when I might be ready to start them? I deeply appreciate all you do for this community Anonymous: Good morning! Could you please do a podcast going over the differences between cryotherapy vs cold plunges and the unique benefits of each (and who each method might benefit or contraindications)? For example, I notice that cryo makes me feel very relaxed during and afterwards and helps alot with my stress and inflammation - however, cold plunges are a huge stressor on my nervous system and make my stress hormones increase (which I don't feel from cryo). Even though they are both cold therapies, there appear to be differences in how they affect the body, since one provides me benefit whereas the other does not (for me personally). Could you please explain this? Kimberly: Hello Dr. Cabral, Am I allowed to include black, green and greek olives in my first 21 days? (minus the first 2 liquid diet days of each week) of course. I look forward to beginning my 21 day detox this coming Monday. Thank you, Kimberly Tin: I am 15 weeks pregnant and I am taking my time to learn more about prenatal and maternity health. I'm curious what are your thoughts about Oral Glucose Tolerance Test? It usually contains 75g of sugar in the solution and taken after fasting. I'm a bit concerned about this much sugar plus the colorings added to that. My OB said this is required to test for gestational diabetes but heard that test can come out false and inaccurate. My FBS and HbA1c are all good, I take supplements and workout, so I think I have low risk. What are other alternatives for this that has less risk to my body? Thank you again for all that you do. Senna: Hi doctor Cabral, I live in Europe and the European Unition has new rules for retinol usage. They have set a maximum concentration of 0.3% for facial products and 0.05% for body products, in order to mitigate potential health risks associated with excessive retinol exposure. Do you know why they did this, and what these health risks are. I love using my 1% retinol serum and am pretty alarmed by this. Thanks so much for your answer! Food Allergy Made Easy | Food Allergy Safety Based On Experience and Research
Dear Food Allergy Mama, Today we're giving you a food allergy resource for real life. I saw this juicy internet question and wanted to weigh in… My daughters ages 1 & 6 have allergies to nuts and peanuts. My brother is getting married and both he and the bride are Vegans. Vegan foods often have nuts in them and sure enough, they've shared the adult menu with me and it contains just about every nut you could think of! They said they've spoken to the caterers and they can plan the kid's menu around my girl's allergies. I would like them to go further and put a sign by the food saying “Some guests have nut allergies so please use hand sanitizer after eating”, however, my brother and his bride have refused to do this. I feel like my kid's allergens will be everywhere, and that they're in danger. I wish my brother would change the menu. Am I being irrational? Should I expect them to change the menu to accommodate my kid's food allergies? Is there anything I could do differently? Ok, friends, judging by the internet comments that this question received, this is a DOOZY. Today, I want to dive deeper and see if we can not only bust a big food allergy myth but also give you 3 steps for calmly deciding if events are right for your family without being fear-based. I hope this blesses you! Corinna NEXT STEPS: 1. Subscribe to this podcast, and give it a review. Your review makes the podcast easier to find for families that need it. 2.
