Nutritional psychiatry is an emerging field that examines the connection between food and mental health. Research shows that a healthy diet can improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. Nutritional psychiatry aims to incorporate dietary interventions as a part of mental health treatment. By identifying the specific nutrients and dietary patterns that affect mental health, patients can make informed decisions about their diet to support their mental health. From his book, Your Vitamins are Obsolete:"Over the past fifty years, increasingly processed food has had its natural bioactive vitamins stripped out while having the synthetic forms substituted back in through fortification and supplementation. These artificial vitamins are poorly made, poorly absorbed, and poorly utilized, eventually being just flushed away unused. It is this nutritional deficiency that is exacerbating the universal illness of chronic inflammation which contributes to the onset of depression, dementia, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc. What I explain in the book is the newly understood mechanism by which this occurs by focusing on the two most essential of the essential vitamins—B12 and folate."Host: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health. Dr. Leah Houston and Dr. Mehnaz Hyder, of HPEC speak about the ever increasing problem of administrative overhead and how to solve this issue, through an innovative idea of a decentralized platform for physicians. The platform would allow physicians to store their credentials in an immutable database, free from fraud, where insurance companies and others can draw from to verify identity. Physician (and all clinician) credentialing is a massive problem and requires hours of administrative time, which costs money, and slows patients from being seen earlier. When this issue is fixed, patients also stand to benefit too, not only through costs saved, but by being seen earlier, and by reducing physician burnout. This could by why only 41% of people in the US trust devices that collect health data. We may not realize that we agreed to allow the company to sell "deidentified" data. Why is "deidentified" in quotes? Because it's surprisingly easy to analyze data and identify you! Laws clearly can't keep up with the rapid pace of technology growth and innovation. When tech grows too quickly, patients can find themselves in a situation where they are relying on technology for something, but their situation is far worse than when they originally began. Who will be monitoring their progression? How would tech developers manage urgent or emergent situations? #mentalhealth #ethics #tech #psychiatry #psychology #therapy #treatment #medicalstudent #futurepsychiatrypodcast #psychSIGN Host: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health. Sean Woodward is the PsychSIGN national President and Medical Student at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Sean and I discussed medical student stigma and factors that prevent students from seeking help. Dr. Bassi cited a study that gave examples of how to promote medical student mental health OTHER than simply encouraging more mindfulness. Another study gave suggestions to faculty to how to support medical students.#mentalhealth #psychiatry #psychology #therapy #treatment #medicalstudent #futurepsychiatrypodcast #psychSIGNHost: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health. We spoke to Tyler Beauchamp, a fourth year medical student at the Medical College of Georgia, about his book Freeze Frame. Freeze Frame explores the mental health of a teenager who slips in and out of reality during his PTSD episodes. We used this book to explore topics of hallucinations, anxiety, social isolation, as they relate to adolescent and student mental health. We also discussed very important topics of medical student mental health as it relates to residency applications, self-disclosure, judgement of others, fear of seeking treatment, and stigma.Host: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health. We had the pleasure of speaking with Ania Wysocka, who is the founder of Rootd, an extremely popular app that is designed to help individuals with anxiety and panic attacks. Ania developed the app when she had experienced panic attacks and found no app that felt suitable for her. Guided by her original mission to develop an app that was practical and easy to use for her demographic, Rootd is a fun (Ron!) yet scientifically sound app that incorporates many fundamental principles of anxiety treatment. Despite the easy temptation to embrace its scientific validity and claim its a one-stop-shop for treatment, she describes the app as fitting in symbiotically with the therapist-patient relationship, and notes the app regularly also encourages users to seek therapy as well. She strikes a balance between astute listening of her user base in incorporating more features, yet wanting to be focused on her mission and not overextend, for example into AI, prematurely, “It's really important to know exactly what we are sharing with users and to not have to kind of be in control of that, because with other tools, you might have a suggested response,” via an AI model. Ania also understands the importance of data privacy in mental health apps. Fear of privacy concerns would inhibit a user from embracing certain core features, such as journaling. Understanding the importance of this, she notes “all of that data is stored locally, so we don't actually see any of that. That's completely private for the user.”Host: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health. Please like, subscribe, comment and share, I would really appreciate it!--Arielle Radin Pulverman (UCLA PhD student) and co-founder of Bruin Health speaks about their goals to, "enable measurement based dimensional, data driven, precision psychiatry through partnering with clinicians who want to do this type of care." Ultimately in 20 yrs, she would like to make sure that "mental health care at least looks like other areas of physical health care... If we can get to the point of being like the gold standard for all things mental health, I don't think we can really do our jobs until mental and physical health are completely integrated at the level of healthcare. That's a very ambitious goal, but that is our North Star." What was the need? "So Bruin is trying to translate a lot of the approaches that we use in mental health research in terms of measurement approaches, also the constructs that we know are relevant for mental health and also the biopsychosocial model of mental health, trying to translate all those approaches into the real world. So something that I noticed being in academia is that a lot of the work that we're doing is not translating. It's not making its way into clinical practice."Why was the product so successful and engaging? "Some people don't realize that using expressive suppression, keeping your feelings in, that is associated with both deleterious mental and physical health outcomes, whereas something like cognitive reappraisal is actually associated with better outcomes. So these are things that people don't know about themselves, and I think that's why they found it engaging."--Chapters00:00 Preview01:38 Her background06:45 Inflammation & Brain Health09:37 Inflammation Phenotype Depression10:18 What is Bruin Health11:12 Underlying Mechanisms Psychiatric Disorders12:55 How does DSM Fit In?14:33 Patients with Pro-Inflammatory States17:06 Difficulty Diagnosing Inflammation19:05 Psychiatrists Become Primary Care Doctors20:56 "in your head"22:01 Work at Bruin Health27:14 First Steps w/ Bruin - Reward learning29:56 Patient's View of Self-Report40:36 Why Some Measurements Don't Work42:53 Treatment Changes Are For Psychotherapy44:30 Future Challenges45:52 Conditions Not Like Real World47:52 Goal to Enable Measurements with Partnerships48:09 Singula Institute52:23 Why Alpha Product Helpful53:14 Results Have Helped Pts Seek Treatment55:07 Reliability Goal--Full transcript, group discussion, our disclaimer, and additional resources can be found on our website:https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/#mentalhealth #psychiatry #psychology #therapy #treatment #technology #digitalpsychiatry #futurepsychiatrypodcastHost: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health. Dr. Scott Burwell, PhD spoke about the company he founded, Neurotype. Neurotype is building brain sensing tools that help patients recognize situations in which they feel triggered to help determine the effectiveness of treatment on brain reactivity and cravings. This would allow you to incorporate elements of CBT and mindfulness based on information gathered from the device. It would also help a clinician and patient to track the effectiveness of therapy over time. The goal is to help the patient better identify triggers, and then learn how to become less triggered by them.Host: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health. Dr. John Hsu, founder of iPill, discusses this innovative method of securely delivering medications, especially buprenorphine (Suboxone), to patients. The device contains a month's supply of medications, and dispenses a single dose to the patient after they use a phone's biometric security function to unlock it. The device is tamper proof and will coat the medications with a substance rendering them inert. This novel idea addresses the billions of unused opioid medications sitting in medicine cabinets that could be misused.Host: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health. Listen to Emil Jimenez, the multicultural founder of Mind Bank, an AI based digital twin app, talk about why he started this company and what privacy and security means to him. There are so many questions pertaining to digital twin that easily come to mind – how does it work? what do they do with the data? how do they expect it to improve in the future? why do we need it? Emil feels very passionately about user's rights to data.Host: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health. Professor Maggi Savin-Baden authored “Virtual Humans: Today and Tomorrow” as well as “Digital Afterlife: Death Matters in a Digital Age.” We explored virtual reality in mental health as well as the concept of a “digital afterlife” where your thoughts, memories, and personality are encoded in an AI bot. What is a digital immortal and is it desirable for us and our loved ones? Would it help or harm others' grief? Are we already functioning as a hybrid real-virtual personality?Host: Bruce Bassi MDMore resources, including a full transcript, can be found at our podcast website: https://www.telepsychhealth.com/futurepsychiatrypodcast/We are always looking to grow and learn more about the field of tech and mental health.
